!!System-Wide HCT EdTech Professional Development Certification Framework!!

Continually emerging technology in the 21st century has created an even stronger need among the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) to provide staff with high quality Professional Development (PD) sessions to support the latest HCT initiatives of mobile learning, learning-by doing and educational technology in general. This document provides a system level educational technology PD framework which will be implemented by the central EdTech team with the help of the college level EdTech professionals.!!System-wide certification benefits include:!

• common learning outcomes and assessment strategies which ensures consistency and maintains overall system quality.!

• nationally and internationally benchmarked.!

• used by staff as evidence of PD in their annual performance appraisals (PEP).!

• serve as a “Recognition of Prior Learning” to gain credits in future studies.!

• endorsed and recognised by the HCT leadership and PIE unit.!

• part of a central registry, which aids in tracking and auditing for accreditation purposes.!!Existing models the framework is based on!!The framework is based primarily on the TPACK Model (http://www.tpack.org). It also draws on best practices from the SAMR Model (Ruben R. Puentedura, 2009) and HCT's LBD strategy (http://www.hct.ac.ae/learning-by-doing/)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!All staff entering the HCT system are expected to be proficient in most areas of the three learning domains as shown in the first diagram, but they come with differing levels of expertise and backgrounds. As well, being proficient in using technology doesn't mean they are effectively integrating pedagogy, content and technology. There is an understanding that faculty have a strong knowledge of their content area, but may need to develop their pedagogical and technological skills in order to engage students and the elevate the learning process. Considering this, we need to prioritise our delivery strategy and target certain groups of teachers that fall under the following broad categories:!!!1.! Pedagogical Skills Training!!Some staff have high technical proficiency in their respective fields but need assistance in being effective “teachers” in the true sense. They require pedagogical training in areas such as “Learning by Doing”, "Learning Approaches", "Classroom Management", “Assessment Strategies”, “Cultural Sensitivities in the UAE context” and “Teaching Strategies for second language English learners”!!!2.! Technology Training!!Some staff have strong pedagogical training as part of their teaching qualifications, but require technology training in areas such as mobile device usage, learning management systems (LMS), HCT Portal applications and various operating systems. !

!!3. ! Creating Digital Learning Objects and Content Skills Training!!Staff that fall into this category have been able to move up to the modification or redefinition stage of the SAMR model. In the modification stage the user of technology has redesigned the tasks being presented to the students. While in the redefinition stage the user has created new activities and is effectively combining pedagogy, content and technology. (Ruben R. Puentedura, 2009). Even though these staff members are using technology successfully, there is a need to support them and encourage them to further develop their skills. This could include becoming mLearning Champions and/or EdTech professionals. Possible training for these staff members could include App creation, advanced multimedia application use, creation of eTextbooks and online course creation.!!Moving from the substitution stage to the redefinition stage doesn't happen overnight. Many of our staff are well versed in the use of technology in the classroom, especially iPads, but they are still considered to be in the augmentation stage. In other words, they are using the new technology, but they have not changed the way they present material or engage the students. Professional development opportunities need to be made to allow them to fully utilize the technology in an effective manner. !!!The structure of the certification program!!• The smallest unit of training is a “module”.!

• Some modules have pre-requisites.!

• Each module is linked to one or more of the learning domains mentioned above. ( Peda Create Tech)!

• A number of modules make up a certification.!

• Each certificate requires approximately 40 hours to complete which could include a combination of face-to-face, online or blended learning scenarios.!

• Certifications can have three levels (Introduction, Intermediate, Advanced)!

• All certifications are competency based which means participants need to demonstrate and show evidence that learning has taken place.!

• Participants that are successful will gain a "certificate of competency" with a transcript that details the modules passed and the competencies gained. Those who don't meet the competencies will be given a "certificate of attendance” and will be given further opportunities to complete the missing competencies.!

• Staff that have received previous training prior to the new certifications don't need to redo the entire course. If they provide sufficient evidence that they meet the competencies and complete the assessments they will be given the certification.!

!!!Roles!!• Course Coordinator: One of the Central Services (CS) EdTech team members will take responsibility for

setting the course descriptors, course outline and assessments strategies. This person will collaborate with the local EdTech professionals and ensure consistency in delivery of the course and the reporting of the course deliverables. !

• Instructor: EdTech professionals at all campuses in conjunction with the CS EdTech Team.!

• Auditor: A designated committee will audit and evaluate the courses to ensure consistency. In addition, the course outcomes and effectiveness will be reported to HCT PD system !!!!Registration and Tracking!!• Blackboard will be used to handle the registration and keep track of grades.!

• Course information and notifications will be pushed via the Mobile Learn app.!

• Mobile apps will communicate with Blackboard’s WebDav server (http://mylearn.hct.ac.ae/bbcswebdav). This serves as a central repository which stores course content and participant submissions.!!Four Certifications (for the near future - others to be added later)!!

They will also review some the theories and frameworks for technology implementation in the classroom, what 21st century skills our students need to be successful and how we, as educators, can help prepare our students for this world.

Review, implement and evaluate different learning approaches such as Blended learning, Collaborative Learning, Flipped Classrooms, Connected Learning. This course requires that the participant to be teaching a class which would allow them to implement the various approaches discussed.

In this module staff will gain the basic skills of delivering and managing an existing pre-populated course as the role of Instructor in Blackboard.

In this module staff will gains skills on how to create new courses and publish content as the role of Designer in Blackboard

M106 Creating iTunesU courses!

In this module staff will gain skills on how to create, publish and manage online courses on HCT’s iTunes U catalogue.

Show evidence that you have created an iTunes U course and used it as a delivery mechanism for one of your classes.!Instructor verifies iTunes U course by enrolling themselves as student and checking that most features have been used correctly.

M107 eText - Train the Trainer

Staff will be gain skills in using eText for deep-linking, open book exams, creating notes and annotations, usage of social networking features, and eText mobile apps.

Completion of post-eText workshop survey administered by the trainer for his participants at their respective colleges.

M108 iOS Mobile Hardware Architecture.!

In this module staff will gain understanding of the operations of the different hardware components on iOS devices such as SoC’s, motion processors, RAM, SSD, sensors, wireless, location services audio and video components.

In this module staff will gain skills in the use of iOS platform components such as using OOP principles, MVC paradigm, Xcode and Objective C basics

M111 MAC OS X Basics

This course will introduce you to the Mac operating system. You will learn how to quickly navigate through the system, shortcuts and how to change your preferences. You will also be introduced to using apps such as; Pages, Keynote, Numbers and iMovie. This course is essential for anyone who wishes to use iBooks Author, but hasn’t used the Mac operating system before.

Show evidence that you were capable on manipulating the MAC file system and created documents using Pages, Keynote and Numbers and have imported and edited a 2 minute video using iMovie.

M112 iBook Author!(Pre-Req=M111)!

This course will introduce you to the program iBooks Author. Learn about the most effective workflow in order to create interactive iBooks and how to distribute them to your students. In addition, we will introduce you to new interactive widgets which are not included in iBooks Author. We will also review copy-right etiquette and how to search for royalty free assets.

Show evidence that you have created a iBook for one of your learning outcomes of one of your courses and have distributed it to all of your learners

M113 Creating Cross- Platform HTML5 objects.!

In this modules staff will gain skills in using rapid interactive eLearning tools to create HTML5 digital learning objects and have them published to different desktop and mobile platforms.

Use software such as Raptivity 7.7 and Captivate 7 and Phonegap to create multi-platform standalone apps from HTML5 code

M114 Screencasts In this modules staff will gain the skills to do video and audio screen captures of their desktops using software such as Camtasia. This is useful for demonstrating the use of a new piece of software or form part of a lesson in a flipped classroom.

Create a 5 min screencast of any new software you would like to demo and distribute it via youtube or any cloud platform.

Becoming a Professional Online Instructor !

This program is focused on Planning and delivering effective Virtual Classrooms sessions. You will learn about the 4-areas of Effective Virtual Classroom; Planning and delivering asynchronous online content, students’ interactivity, Virtual Classroom management and the Core Technical & Interpersonal Skills of a Virtual Classroom Instructor. Online attendance policies, tracking and analytics will also be discussed.

In this module, you learn about how the internet has impacted our world in terms of online safety. Issues such as plagiarism and privacy in the UAE cultural context will be discussed.

Final Cut Pro! In this module staff will gain skills in shooting good quality video and editing it using Final Cut and eventually formatting it for the required publishing platform.

Shoot high quality HD movie clips using the iPAD and import and edit in Final Cut Pro to create a 5min movie which includes captions, picture in picture, slides, music and voice overs.

Learning by Doing

In this module staff will be introduced to HCT’s LBD strategy whereby students gradually acquire essential knowledge and skills through active, self-reflective engagement with the world inside the classroom and beyond which increases the chance that concepts will be learned, remembered and used in a variety of situations.Staff will be briefed on how educational technology in general can be used achieve the HCT LBD strategy.

Show evidence that you have implemented LBD principles in one of your classes. Document that evidence by making a short movie. Contexts could include practical projects, fields trips, community outreach, work placement, simulations, etc.

Cultural Sensitivities in the UAE Context

This course serves an an orientation to foreigner teachers coming into the UAE. It emphasis how to be respectful of the cultural, religious and social customs of the UAE when engaging with students in class and online and when creating and delivering digital content.

The staff will be exposed to strategies that will help to overcome the language barrier faced by some of our students when interacting with teachers and digital content.

Turn on all sharing options you wish to utilize. This should include Find My iPad. [Note: Mail is only for iCloud mail, not HCT mail. This is saved by Microsoft Exchange.] !

Explain features of iCloud Safari Keychain – new feature which saves your passwords and credit card information on all your devices. Safari iCloud Tabs (what is open on your other devices) Storage and Back up (shows your total storage in the Cloud system, any music downloaded from iTunes doesn’t take up space in the Cloud). [Note: Backing up can also be done manually in iTunes on your computer.] !

Other Cloud Servers - explain the difference between iCloud and the other Cloud servers. Box, DropBox, Google Drive, SkyDrive !!Privacy settings - Ask participants to complete actions below. Turn on Location Services (Settings > Privacy > Locations Services > On)

[Note: Location services need to be turn on for apps to access your photos, such as Keynote, Pages and iMovie.] [Tip: Find My iPad should always be left on for security purposes.] !!

Find My iPad - ask participants to complete actions below. !Exchange iPads with a partner and open Find My iPhone and send a message/sound to your iPad.

Open a new Pages landscape document. Add one image and a table. Add three questions you would like to ask your partner in the table. Delete two columns so there is only the question column and the answer column. Use a different colour and font for each question. Put your iPad into Guided Access mode and disable documents tab. (Triple Click Home button, circle Documents, tap start) Hand your iPad to your partner and ask them to answer your questions. After they finish, end Guided Access and turn it off. (Triple Click Home button > End, Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access > Turn off) !!
