Bread Anyone?
Q. Who mentions food to hungry people in between meals? Answer: Jesus and now me.
Actually, that is the setting of the gospel of John chapter 6. Jesus wanted to talk about spiritual things. The crowd was interested mainly in lunch. The people begin to bargain for a repeat performance of the previous day’s miracle, the feeding of the 5,000. As if to put a spiritual spin on it they pointed out that the manna of Moses’ day was literal food that could be eaten. However, Jesus continued to speak of a different kind of food from heaven—“true bread”. “For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (v. 33).
The people were basically offering to make a deal with Jesus. They would believe in Him if He would agree to make food for them from now on, whenever they demanded it. Jesus could have given them food, or anything else they wanted, whenever they wanted. That would have been a very seeker-sensitive way to guarantee that the crowds would never diminish. Jesus was not there to discuss the lunch menu with them, much less barter for their faith by doing miracles on demand. He was going to talk to them about spiritual things. So He said plainly “I am the bread of life” (v 35).
There were aspects of the Pharisees’ doctrine that Jesus could have singled out to establish some “common ground” with them. There was a lot of positive energy in the crowds that were following Him. He could have harnessed it and doubled or tripled the size of His following. He did not do that. In fact, He did the opposite. His preaching had one aim: to declare truth, not to win praise from the audience. He did not try to make truth easier to receive. On the contrary, what He did was make it impossible to ignore.
While we are on the subject of food, how about some “living water”
to go with “the bread of life”? John 4:10, “Jesus answered and said
to her, if you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you,
give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have
given you living water.”
Now there is a ‘bread’ and
‘water’ diet you can live with for
eternity.

Ignore)

WELCOME HOME TO OUR OUTSTANDING YOUTH!!
We are so incredibly grateful for our young people! Ninety-six of our youth and chaperones have just returned from their annual Spring Chorus Trip to Texas, where they conducted worship services for the Northside Church of Christ in Waco. That congregation was also blessed to enjoy a performance from our youth chorus following services. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication in spreading the gospel.
One of our young men, Brayden Pyburn, was recently honored with winning 1st place in two regional speaking competitions. The topic of his award-winning speech was prayer in schools. Congratulations Brayden!

Welcome ......................................................................... Alan Ragan
6:00 PM—Worship
(Classes 3rd grade and down will meet as scheduled.)
Tonight’s worship assembly will be led by the young men in our youth group. This year, Alan Ragan and Bob Spencer have
taken our youth to the following congregations on Sunday evenings, where our young men have conducted the worship assemblies:
Midway New Spring Creek
Vanleer Shiloh
Water Street in Charlotte, TN Waverly
Northside in Waco, TX
Walnut Street in Seguin, TX
During these assemblies, twenty-four of our young men have preached the gospel. We are always happy to share our youth
with other congregations, but we look forward with great anticipation each year to the time when they “come home”
and lead the assembly at Walnut Street.
7:00 PM—Youth Chorus Presentation Our youth chorus, under the direction of Bob Spencer, consists of 80 young people from the 6th-12th grades. This is the 29th
consecutive year of the Youth Chorus at Walnut Street
7:30 PM—Finger-food Fellowship We will conclude the day with a special time of
fellowship as we share a finger-food meal together. Please bring food for your family and guests!
