Luminus celebrated again as our Neighbourhood Wardens won “Highly Commended” in the National Customer Service Awards! Our Neighbourhood Wardens provide a highly visible, friendly and helpful presence as they identify areas requiring attention, carry out daily estate audits and tell their colleagues about problems that need attention. They play an important role in bringing reassurance to local people and contribute to making neighbourhoods safer. The team is active in encouraging social inclusion within communities, focusing on areas where their ‘friendly face and helpful hand’ model the benefits of working together. They spend time with residents on their needs and expectations, trying to find solutions, to involve ‘hard to reach groups’ and to provide contact for local agencies, The Wardens tackle urgent needs and often are the first point of contact for vulnerable people. They seek to inspire a range of initiatives involving the community, schools, retailers and businesses. These projects help to foster local pride, a sense of ownership and a desire to improve the environment by and for the whole community. ISSUE 3 OCTOBER 2008

Neighbourhood Wardens are highly commended

The Luminus Neighbouhood Warden Team in action!

They spend time with residents on their needs and expectations, trying to find solutions, to involve ‘hard to reach groups’ and to provide contact for local agencies,

councillors and others. The Wardens tackle urgent needs and often are the first point of contact for vulnerable people. They seek to inspire a range of initiatives involving the community, schools, retailers and businesses. These projects help to foster local pride, a sense of ownership and a desire to improve the environment by and for the whole community.

Luminus hopes that the success of the Neighbourhood Wardens will encourage similar schemes across the country.

Optimism may seem difficult in the face of deteriorating public morale, as UK leaders and organisations slip and slide.

Luminus people believe that great attitude, clear focus and perseverance will win through. By investing our energies in supporting communities and their neighbourhoods, listening carefully and being decisive in our business dealings, we are seeing some great results.

Hard times present as much opportunity as obstacles. We hope the Luminus approach will inspire others to believe and win through.

Luminus Making Links

LuminusExtra care

Luminus has donated over £8000 to “Making Links”, a group of volunteers who work with international women and children aged under five years to promote self esteem and cross-cultural friendships.

Many of Luminus’ tenants are from different cultural backgrounds, and so achieving integration and a positive sense of community spirit is vital.

In partnership with Making Links, who run weekly sessions attended by women from over twenty different countries, Luminus are boosting levels of community cohesion and this has positive benefits for all members of Luminus communities.

The project is for international families as well as British tenants, who are encouraged to get involved.

As Melanie, a member, explains,

“There is so much negative around that it is important to experience this positive environment and to sow the seeds that we live in a diverse world.”

Project Leader Fiona Bateman said,

“The Making Links project is greatly appreciative of the tremendous support given by Luminus and we truly value their contribution.”

Luminus has raised £1500 for Cancer Research UK as part of the Race for Life intiative. In addition to the race day, a fundraising event was held on Friday 12 September.

Luminus made the Friday a dress down day and Luminus staff members made toasted sandwiches, cakes and other tasty treats. ‘Guess the baby’ and ‘Guess the legs’ competitions were held along with a book sale.

Luminus Group, one of the region’s most progressive housing companies and Campbell Buchanan are working together on a landmark development that will transform Huntingdon’s town centre.

The development consists of two distinct phases - an extra care sheltered housing scheme with 34 extra care units and state of the art support facilities and 47 high quality apartments.

The site, adjacent to the ring road, provides an opportunity for high quality buildings that create much needed housing and special care for the elderly.
