Homewatch Caregivers recently celebrated its 15th anniversary of providing nonmedical in-home assistance for seniors who require assistance so they can maintain their independence and stay in their homes.

The agency serves St. Louis and St. Charles counties with 100 caregivers who offer hourly and live-in assistance. Beginning Oct. 1, the agency will begin accepting Medicare payments.

“My wife, Maria, and I chose a business so we could work together in an industry that was growing,” said President Mike Gianino. “It was also our hope this business could develop into a family business that our children would enjoy.

In addition to his wife Maria, who serves as vice president of marketing, his team includes Michael P. Gianino as vice president of operations, and Jody Wagner, R.N., as client assessments and caregiving training.

“It was important after 20 years with Anheuser-Busch to do less overnight travel while also becoming involved firsthand in the betterment of the community,” he added. “Our company has improved the quality of life for both our elderly clients and the many caregivers we have employed.”

The home healthcare industry demands that caregiving agencies understand the needs and expectations of their elderly clients and their families, while also being able to attract, motivate and retain the very best caregivers in the industry.

Clients tell the Gianinos that their caregivers do understand the needs of the clients.

“Treating the ‘Greatest Generation’ with the utmost in respect and dignity has been our top priority,” Gianino said.

Audiologist Susan Hamilton, AuD CCC-A, opened her HearUSA practice in Shrewsbury in 2013 providing hearing health care and related products. In 2014 she moved to Concord Plaza.

Hamilton offers audiological evaluations and fits patients for hearing aids and hearing health care products, including assistive listening devices, alerting systems, hearing protection devices and hearing aid accessories and batteries.

It typically takes the average adult seven to 10 years before seeking help for their hearing loss, because it is often a gradual process, according a 2003 report in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“Hearing loss is truly the invisible handicap as it is nearly impossible to see an individual’s hearing loss by looking at someone,” Hamilton said. “After a conversation, it can be more noticeable than hearing aids themselves.”

She received bachelor’s degrees in nuclear medicine and speech and hearing sciences from the University of Oklahoma and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, respectively. She holds a master’s degree in audiology from Washington Universityand graduated from the University of Florida with her doctor of audiology degree in August of 2014.

Hamilton finds her greatest professional satisfaction in “improving the quality of life by providing the best resolution for my patients’ individual hearing health needs.”

HearUSA is accredited by URAC, an independent not-for-profit organization that sets quality standards for health care agencies.

The emphasis on personal patient care continues at Lockwood Chiropractic under its new owner and operator Dr. Sharon Whalen. Whalen, a chiropractic physician, acquired the business in 2013.

Lockwood Chiropractic provides chiropractic healthcare services, including acupuncture, auriculotherapy, applied kinesiology, nutritional assessment and therapeutic massage.

As evidenced by the practice’s services, chiropractic care is about more than just an individual’s back.

“It is very effective treatment for headaches, ear infections in children, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, neuralgia in hands and feet and sports injuries to shoulders, knees and ankles,” Whalen said.

As of Oct. 1, the practice will expand its services to include full-service massage in the office’s newly remodeled massage suites.

Dr. Whalen acquired Lockwood Chiropractic after working with chiropractic physicians Lynelle Hinden, DC and Donna Mannello, DC, the previous owners. They continue to practice with Whalen. Lockwood Chiropractic has been in business at the Downtown Webster location since 1980.

Over the years, chiropractic healthcare has become more widely accepted and understood to be the best way to continue good health, Dr. Whalen said.

She gets the most satisfaction from helping patients achieve their maximum health potential.

Patients tell her they appreciate the personal attention to their healthcare needs and the relaxed, comfortable atmosphere of the office.

Since 1993, Watson Imaging Center has been providing quality diagnostic imaging at an affordable rate. The center’s specialties are digital mammograms, CAT scans, ultrasounds, X-rays and bone density scans.

Watson Imaging Center is independently owned, which enables the company to offer competitive pricing. The center contracts with most major insurance companies and offers discounted rates to patients without insurance. Watson Imaging has no financial ties with any hospitals and is accredited by the American College of Radiology.

“Our mission is to provide convenient, affordable and accurate radiology services while maintaining personalized, professional service to all patients,” said a company spokesperson.

The staff consists of highly trained, certified technologists with many years of experience. Images are read by board-certified radiologists who are on duty daily. Technologists regularly attend continuing education classes to stay current on the latest techniques, and the company continually updates its technology.

X-rays are performed on a walk-in basis, and Watson Imaging Center offers same day appointments for most exams with results within 24 hours.

“The people are all very friendly and professional and they get you in and out quickly,” said customer K.F. of St. Louis. “Each time I have been to Watson Imaging, I have had very pleasant experiences.”

The staff reminds patients that “you have the right to choose where to go for your imaging. Tell your doctor that you want to go to Watson Imaging Center.”

Watson Imaging Center is located at the corner of Watson Road and Lindenwood with front-door parking.

Ana Danielyan, M.D., on staff at Premier Medical Specialists since 2008, has a passion for working with patients and helping them stay well.

“I used to practice hospital medicine as a hospitalist, but I really missed the long-term physician-patient relationship and I decided to go into primary care,” said Dr. Danielyan, who specializes in patients over age 17.

Danielyan is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and received her medical degree from Yerevan State Medical University in Armenia. She completed her training at St. Luke’s Hospital, where she worked as a hospitalist for several years.

Danielyan’s practice offers physicals, general wellness services, pre-operative screenings, EKGs and disease management for chronic conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes and weight issues. She is fluent in English, Russian and Armenian.

One of the many ways the health care field has changed is in the education of patients.

“You see more and more patients who are educated about their disease management, which I encourage,” Danielyan said. “I like when patients ask questions and are involved in their care.”

Danielyan follows her patients while they are in the hospital and visits patients in nursing homes.

“Being in primary care, you really start caring about your patients’ health,” she said. “You know how important it is to treat them when they ‘feel healthy’ before they become sick.”

Danielyan is on the medical staff at Des Peres Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital. She accepts new patients and makes evening and same-day appointments available. Her office accepts most insurance plans, including Health Insurance Market Place.
