Don’t automatically assume the product with thehighest NRR is the best choice for you. Over-protection can leave workers with the inability to hearany sound whatsoever and may force them toremove their hearing protection every time they wantto speak to a co-worker or hear an announcementthroughout the day. Removing your hearing protection in noisy environments for as little as 5 minutes a day can dramatically affect your trueNRR. Remember, the best hearing protection is hearing protection that gets worn!

NRR, or Noise Reduction Rating, is a guidelinethat indicates the amount of potential protection a hearing protection device will give in a noisyenvironment.

NRR is the decibel (dB) reduction provided byhearing protection based on laboratory test data.However, these tests can’t possibly account for allthe variables of a typical workplace. Even though a higher NRR is intended to indicate greater noisereduction, NRR can be affected by protector size,fit and condition, as well as user motivation andtraining.

A realistic estimate of protection can be obtainedby reducing the labeled NRR by 50%, for example:

Environmental noise level = 92dBNRR = 26dB, which reduced by 50%becomes 13dBLevel of noise entering the ear is 92dB – 13dB = 79dB
