HOSA Health and Fitness Tips The popular saying “health is wealth" gives a large meaning to our life as health is considered to be very valuable and precious for every individual. Good health means not only a state of absence of disease in the body but a complete physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing of an individual. Physical fitness is very necessary for a healthy and tension free life. Physical fitness includes diet, exercise and sleep. These three basic things have their own importance in each individual's life and everyone should be sensible with regard to these for a healthy life.

Dieting isn’t the answer but often a solution to get healthy. Eating right is a lifestyle; how much to eat and when to eat it. Therefore, one should "eat to live and not live to eat". Whatever is pleasing to your eyes, whatever is pleasing to your tongue and whatever you feel pleased after eating may be taken as long as your digestion, body weight, strength and activities are regular. Your diet should be simple and light rather than heavy, and should be rich in nutrients. Fruit should be supplemented with the meals in lieu of fats and carbohydrates. Those who eat fruit and fresh vegetables in their diet enjoy longevity of life, good health, agility in activity, spirituality of mind and maintain a positive outlook on life. A diet rich in fruits and fresh vegetables lowers the incidence of disease such as cancer, diabetes, cataract, heart attack etc. Fast food and soft drinks should be strictly avoided although every individual has his own requirements. Some important tips of good eating habits are (1) make breakfast the largest and dinner the lightest meal of the day, (2) be a nibbler not a buffet eater, (3) eat your salad before you eat the main course, (4) don't starve yourself and overeat subsequently, (5) fast food and canned food are costly both for your pocket and your heart, (6) yellow, orange and green vegetables and many fruits add life to your heart and (7) as you become older, eat less and exercise more.

Basic Metabolic Rate increases if a person exercises. As a result, the absorption of digested food increases. Exercising also burns the excess fat in the body and improves the functionality of vital organs. Regular exercise reduces excessive body weight as well as reduces the danger of high blood pressure due to excess weight. It makes the heart function properly and reduces the incidence of coronary heart disease. Regular exercise also

tones the muscles and decreases wrinkles on your face. Exercise is essential for everyone to stay healthy and ultimately will help greatly in reducing weight and preventing diseases in the future. Sleep is the physical and mental state during which the nervous system undergoes an active reorganization rather than real inhibition. Every part of the body relaxes during sleep and vital organs such as the heart, kidney, lungs and the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) remain active. Adults nowadays are sleeping less because of active lifestyles, especially

students in college. Physical wellbeing wholly depends upon a sound brain as all activities of our body are controlled by the mind. Any disturbance in the mind will disturb the body giving rise to various abnormalities. A sound sleep is a must for a healthy person. Some useful tips for it are (1) before going to bed get rid of your stress by meditation,(2) don't sleep during the day and avoid caffeine, (3) perform physical and mental work to get some sleep, (4) exercise regularly, (5) drink warm milk and avoid spicy foods before going to bed. “You must do the thing you think you cannot do” –Eleanor Roosevelt For more great healthy tips check out these links below: • http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20513624_4,00.html • http://www.mensfitness.com/training/pro-tips/top-25-fitness-tips-and-strategies-from-the-experts

THE RESEARCH POSITION: THE HOW TO’S

FOR A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT

Scoring a research position at a University as a high school student seems like a pretty surreal goal - the opportunities that come with it are one in a million. But the question is: do you have what it takes? Trying to land that opportunity isn't an easy task when you're competing against other high school and college students nationwide. But if you're determined to snag some of that lab space for yourself here are a couple of steps you might want to follow.

1. Make sure you're ready.

What are nearest Universities? How will you get there? What are you interested in researching? What are your time commitments? Making sure that you know you can handle the job is one of the first steps in getting it.

2. Do the research. No professor wants to be contacted by a student who hardly knows what they're talking about. Figure out what you want to do first – something that you're passionate about researching – then target professors who are interested in the same things you are.

3. Email the professors you've targeted. This is when things start becoming real. Your email should be formal, professional, and straight to the point. Keep it under a paragraph long and do not attach anything like a resume or cover letter without them asking. Your first email should show enthusiasm and if you don't get any replies, be persistent! Try again in a couple weeks and/or find a new professor.

4. Set up a meeting. Before you get the position the professor you've contacted is going to want to meet you. Make sure to come prepared, dress professionally (but not overtly so), have a resume and writing sample available and most importantly, be yourself. If you really want the position, it'll show.

5. Wait for a response. You'll find out if you've gotten the position after the meeting. If you do, congratulations! But if you don't, don't be discouraged – if you try again, you never know, you just might get it. It's not going to be easy - trying to get the position is only the first part of the equation. But at the end of the day it will be worth it. The experiences you can gain and the people you could meet will always be for the better. So if your interested in one of those prized research positions, don't let the fear of failure stop you because, after all, what do you have to lose? Want some more ideas? Stanford has some really great internships and summer programs for high school students – here's a link: http://oso.stanford.edu/programs/audiences/5-high-school-students/categories/5-research-internships Here's a great article about the iCLEM Summer Research Program: http://newscenter.lbl.gov/news-releases/2012/07/16/iclem-2012/

How to Use Social Media to Your Chapter’s Advantage

Today it seems like everyone is connected to social media. Whether it’s Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, chances are you use at least one. So how do you use this attachment to the internet to your advantage? It’s easy! All you have to do is reach out to your members using any number of the wonderful social media resources available. Best part is, it’s free and easy to get connected.

So what exactly do you have to do? Just start an account or page on any social media site you want and ask your members to follow, friend, or subscribe to you. Creating the page is just the first step, next you need to use it to reach out to your members. Social media is a great way to put out information so be sure to make some of your posts about upcoming events for your chapter and some of the benefits of being a member. At the same time you shouldn’t overload your members with information; be sure to put in a few light-hearted and fun posts to keep them entertained. The last kind of post you should include is one that acknowledges the members. It’s always a nice idea to thank members for their participation and post pictures showing off all of the great things they have accomplished.

The important thing to remember is that creating a page and making a few posts is just the start. A page with no followers isn’t very effective. For social media to work you have to get your members involved. First, you have to get them to add or follow your chapter. Encourage them to add it and remind them that it’s a great way to stay informed and become a great HOSA member. Next, you should encourage them to like your posts and check in as often as possible. A page isn’t any good if your members are missing all of the great things your chapter has to say. Lastly, put your member’s social media to use. A lot of people like to post about what they’re doing, so remind your members to tag your chapter and use hashtags like #calhosa #HOSA and maybe even create your own for your chapter. Encouraging member participation is an important part of HOSA and social media.

Lastly, one of the most important things about using social media is to remember that each site has a purpose and use it to your advantage. Sites like Facebook are wonderful for posting health related articles, creating events for your chapter, and creating massive conversations through posts and comments. Twitter is excellent for sending out blasts and quick reminders and gives members a chance to get involved with hashtags and retweets. Both Instagram and YouTube are great for showcasing what your chapter has done. Whether it’s posting pictures on Instagram or videos on YouTube members have a chance to see all the wonderful things they have been doing or all the fun they can have participating in HOSA.

Overall social media is a fantastic tool for you and your chapter. It is an excellent way to reach out to members, encourage them, and remind them of all the great things they do. Check out fantastic sites like www.facebook.com, www.twitter.com, and www.instagram.com. CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT: DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL HOSA

Hello HOSA members, advisors, and officers. This is your Region 2 VP Nelish Ardeshna here with your chapter spotlight. Chapters throughout California have been hard at work to provide their members with exciting and enriching experiences through workshops, fundraisers, and social events. Dublin High School HOSA is among these chapters. However, what makes it unique is that it is a new addition to our HOSA family.

Founded by Sraavya Kakarlapudi, Dublin HOSA serves to promote health occupations and provide students an opportunity to explore medicine. Sraavya was inspired to start her own chapter after she was introduced to the HOSA National Leadership Conference when exploring a variety of medical conferences. One tip she has for students starting their own chapter is, "get as much help as you can from students and an adult advisor so you can speed up the process of establishing your chapter." Soon after the chapter was founded, Sraavya and her officers were hard at work to create ways to both recruit new members and spread HOSA awareness. As a team, the officers created videos and made posters to display around the school. According to them however, the best technique to recruit members is to take advantage of the school’s club fair held at the beginning of each school year. The HOSA year was well underway for the Dublin chapter after establishing itself and recruiting members. While they waited for the upcoming regional, state, and national conferences, the chapter officers planned a few of their own events to make the HOSA year even more memorable. One of the most successful events according to them, was attending the Suture Clinic 2013 at UC Davis. Their members got to learn about surgery from the world-renowned staff at UC Davis Health System Department of Surgery. The fun didn’t end there for the members; later they got to apply what they learned by practicing suturing pig feet. This is a great opportunity for chapters near Davis, CA to incorporate into their year.

Now as the 2014 State Leadership Conference (SLC) looms ahead, the chapter is busy exploring competitive events, ordering textbooks to prepare for the events, and planning mock-competitions. When I asked Sraavya what she looks forward to at SLC, she replied, “I hope that the state conference will inspire my chapter to explore other events. I also look forward to being inspired by motivating public speakers.” After attending 3 state conferences myself, I can guarantee her, and others wondering the same thing, that there will definitely be a lot of inspiring going around at the state conference. From meeting students across California, to participating in workshops run by extraordinary people, it’s hard not to come home without learning something new and leaving inspired.

After founding my own chapter two years ago, I know how hard it is to start a new one out from scratch. However, after seeing what the Dublin HOSA chapter has achieved in such a short amount of time, its certain that they are off to a great start. Keep up the excellent work Dublin HOSA, and welcome to our growing California HOSA family!

Out and About in HOSA Blues Something changes in every HOSA member when we step out in our HOSA blues. We stand a little taller, smile a little brighter, and shine with self-confidence. Through our blues we let out our inner leaders, preparing each of us for the professional journeys ahead. It is important to maintain this professionalism not only in our HOSA blues, but in everyday life. You never know when…

1. You could meet someone new

First impressions matter! When meeting someone new that person will make their first impression of you and that first impression can last a lifetime. Remember that people don’t remember much about what you said, but what they do remember is how you made them feel. When meeting someone for the first time smile and be open, this makes you look approachable and tells them “I want to talk to you.” Remember to shake their hand and introduce yourself politely.

2. Someone is watching you

People watch you, as weird as it sounds, people are always watching. You never know when someone could be watching the way you act, and it tells a lot about a person by how they act in public, with friends, or even on social media sites. Who knows, your future employer could be the one watching.

3. Punctuality Being professional isn’t all about meeting people for the first time; being professional can mean something simple like showing up to an event on time. Of course, as HOSA members we know that early is on time, on time is late, and late is left behind. But why does something like time mean so much and why do people make an opinion of you just because you are not on time? This is because showing up on time is a sign of respect and showing up late is the equivalent to telling everyone that your time is more important than their own. Being punctual can also show others that you are a reliable and dependable person. For tips on punctuality visit: http://www.consulthowto.com/how-to-improve-punctuality-easily

4. Appearance Keeping a professional appearance will give you a serious and qualified look. For many medical jobs you will be working with patients and doing hands on tasks. Acrylic nails and chipped finger nail polish are very impractical. Not only can it give off a messy image, but it can interfere with your duties. Using no polish or using a clear or neutral coat will give you a professional look while also making work effective. Another way to get the professional look is by wearing your hair up with all hair out of your face. For some ideas about simple professional hairstyles you can visit: http://www.schwarzkopf.com/sk/en/home/hair_styling/hair_style_trends/cuts_and_hairstyles/professional_hair_styles.html#1

5. Respect A professional is someone who is trustworthy, dependable, punctual, prepared, groomed, and most of all respectful. Like the old saying “you must give respect to get respect.” This is especially important in the professional world. As future health professionals we must learn to respect all types of people, ideas, and beliefs, and in return we gain the same respect. Remember that no one is the same and our differences make us unique.

6. A word on professionalism Professionalism is not just one thing but many different things that are essential to maintain effective work. HOSA members everywhere are becoming effective health professionals and so can you! Good luck Cal-HOSA!

California HOSA State Office:

An Amazing Journey That Could Be Yours

HOSA has shaped who I am as a leader but also who I am as a person through both the incredible organization that it is and its inspiring members. Guided by an interest in healthcare, I signed up to be a member of my high school HOSA chapter during my junior year. Elections were coming up and something inside me—to this day I don’t

know what—compelled me to run for office. I decided to run for Vice President. After a tie breaker, I was informed that I was the new Vice President of our chapter. After attending the Regional Leadership Conference I was even more inspired and that very same mysterious feeling resurfaced and drove me to run for state office. I had prepared a speech and rehearsed several times. I walked up to the podium ready to deliver my phenomenal speech and totally botched it. As can probably be inferred, I lost that election. Now I had two choices: I could either take this loss and leave feeling demoralized or I could learn from the experience and build a better me—I wasn’t done yet. I chose the second option. I like to think that I have strived to build upon myself ever since and, exactly one year later, I became your California HOSA Vice President of Leadership. If you want to be a State Officer you can, you just need the passion, the desire and the commitment to strive to make California HOSA even better .

Being a State Officer is an incredible experience. You are an ambassador of over 4,000 students! It is an opportunity for those who want to take their commitment, passion, and leadership skills to the next level. You grow not only as a leader but as a person. Your State Officer Team becomes near family as they strive together to do the best that you can for the members. To run for Cal-HOSA State Office you need to:

1. Speak with your chapter advisor and go over the State Officer Candidate Guide together

2. Attain the approval of your chapter 3. Prepare for the State Leadership Conference

My leadership journey is far from over but running for state office was one of the best decisions I have ever made. You can begin your journey as a California HOSA State Officer this March at the State Leadership Conference in Anaheim. The State Officer Candidate Guide will be up on http://cal-hosa.org/ sometime during early January so keep a lookout! With 2014 approaching fast, the future starts now!

LEADERSHIP, WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

“He didn’t tell me how to live: he lived and let me watch

him do it”. This is a daughter’s account of her father. These words capture my attention, my emotions and my imagination. Ideas can be best captured as images. Picture a father walking…he is not in front of his daughter expecting her to follow, or behind her pushing her forward, but alongside her, leading by example. This

image is of a father living life to its fullest, in every action, thought, word and deed. He showed his daughter how to have a meaningful life through teaching her the virtues worth having, which obstacles to avoid, moments that should be seized and relationships worth fighting for. This father-daughter scenario is one example of leadership. HOSA thrives on teaching students, such as you and I, to become the best leader we can be, just as a father teaches his daughter how to grow into the best person she can be. HOSA provides the essential skills that we will need in order to rise up among our peers and lead them to achieve their goals. One essential method is by modeling. It is too often that people get lost in barking orders and expecting people to follow them wherever they go. They lack substance and credibility.

When times like these occur, leaders need to humbly reflect on their role, the example that they have been setting. Leaders must move away from being the boss and become the role model in the situation. Instead of directing their peers, they need to encourage, guide and serve them. If the old saying, “actions speak louder than words” is indeed true, then let our lives be the basis for others to follow. As leaders we know we are not perfect, but we live life so it is constructive and honorable. For more examples on what leadership looks like, check out this link: http://www.asaecenter.org/Resources/ANowDetail.cfm?ItemNumber=241962

The SLC Experience

Soon enough, future health professionals dressed in navy blue, white, and maroon will swarm the streets of Anaheim by the thousands. In local coffee shops scanning pathophysiology textbooks, sitting on park benches flipping through flashcards of medical terminology, and carrying CPR dummies here and there; Cal-HOSA members will be preparing for the one thing that will put

them to the test—the California HOSA State Leadership Conference! Will you be joining the thousands that will flood the Anaheim Marriott this upcoming March? Will your voice be joining the roar of California HOSA's finest during the energizing, exhilarating opening ceremony? If so, you'll want to make sure to take note of the following... "Where are we going?"

The 2014 State Leadership Conference will be hosted at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel at 700 West Convention Way. More often than not, the first question that is asked is, "What may we do when we arrive? Is there anything around that's fun?" Well, with Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure less than a mile away, we're sure that California HOSA's future health professionals will be present on Main Street, USA—mouse ears on and ready for a blast. However, if making the trip to the happiest place on earth isn't quite your style, there is a fitness center and outdoor pool to hang out at on hotel premises.

As each day of excitement ends and you find yourself looking for an evening to kick back, catch up, and enjoy a bite to eat you'll find many options available to you locally. All within one mile of the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, you will find popular restaurants and eateries such as The Cheesecake Factory, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., P. F. Chang's China Bistro, and McCormick & Shmick's Seafood & Steaks. "What should I expect? As always, with the music turned up, lights flashing, and the stage ready—the conference will kick off with the high energy of an Opening Session that only California HOSA may offer. Then, the annual Competitive Events program will begin for all members who will be competing. While the conference is underway, be sure to take note of the prominent events such as the State Business Meeting, Social Event, and Awards Ceremony where our state leaders will be recognized for their achievements and the 2014-2015 State Officer Team will be installed into office. With so much to look forward to, the SLC experience is your own to create. We look forward to seeing you in Anaheim!
