In recent years, Scottish Government ferrysubsidies have kept fares low, making ajourney here great value.

Leave the motorway near Perth and follow wide, smooth trunk roads past Inverness to Ullapooland the Loch Seaforth.
Or take the scenic route to Oban or Skye andcross with another of CalMac’s large, modernships.
Typically carrying more than 100 cars and 600passengers, these large, drive-on/drive-off shipsoffer a relaxed, stress free journey. Winners ofmany awards, CalMac have staff who really careabout making your journey easy.
Onboard, visit the restaurant, take a snooze orstroll on deck while amazing scenery slips pastthe ship. Keep an eye out for dolphins thatoccasionally appear quite close to the ferry.
Of course, travelling in your own car, you’ll enjoyfamiliar comforts and you can bring as muchbaggage as you like - even your mountain bikes!
Your inter-island ferry crossings are all includedin the holiday package on purpose built ferriesthat each vary widely in size and facilities, but alloffer a fascinating journey.

“It was a unique travelexperience and we loved it.”
Mr & Mrs A - Australia
Lewis is the most populated of the Hebrideanislands, but it's still very quiet with only 30people for each of our 680 square miles - abouta twentieth of the UK average.
Away from the town of Stornoway, it's an islandof wild moorland, lochs, rolling hills, shell-sandbeaches and rocky inlets. The land ispunctuated by small villages, often alongsidethe sea - a traditional source of food forthousands of years. While contemporarydwellings are settling into the landscape, crofters' cottages are still in the majority, eachwith its strip of agricultural land stretchingaway behind it. Many crofts are still regularlyfarmed, mainly for Lewis lamb, but also somecattle and other small scale produce.
Harris, which is about a quarter the size ofLewis, is not actually a separate island, but isjoined to Lewis along its northern border, running for about six miles across themountainous area between Loch Seaforth andLoch Reasort. Strangely, Harris is almostdivided by the sea at Tarbert, where the islandis only about a quarter mile wide.
The inland area of Harris is mainly rugged andmountainous, popular with hill walkers, eagle-watchers and mountain bikers. Quiet, shell-sand beaches line the west coast. To the east, rocky inlets reach isolated hamlets, where, intimes gone by, fishing, crofting and weavingwould have been the inhabitants' only meansof support.

The magic of Lewis and Harris
Wildlife: Inland, beyond the villages, much of
the land is, or has been, in the care of sporting
estates, so the area is teeming with wildlife.
Golden eagles and buzzards soar over hills,
sea eagles frequent the coastline; harriers,
buzzards, merlin and other raptors hunt over
moorland; resident and migratory seabirds are
assured of plentiful food and local gardens
are destinations for a multitude of small birds.
It's common to see deer on the hills and
moors and occasionally you may catch sight
of an otter near the shore. From the shoreline,
it's not especially unusual to view dolphins
and porpoises, whales and basking sharks.
Nature and scenic locations: Tiumpan Head
off A866 on Eye Peninsula (Point) - seabird
colonies and migrating birds on passage (take
care) - possibility of seeing whales or
dolphins there on a calm day.
Butt of Lewis, the extreme north-west point of
Lewis, where huge seas frequently batter the
cliffs beneath the lighthouse. Large numbers
of seabirds are often seen here and the bird
hide at Loch Stiapabhat is worth visiting.
Off A859 from Stornoway to Tarbert, turn onto
B8060 after Balallan into an area known as
Pairc - good birdwatching countryside, where
it's sometimes possible to see eagles and
other raptors.
Stornoway (pop. ca. 7,500) is the largest townin the Outer Hebrides and is theadministrative 'capital' of the area. A diversityof shops and businesses serve local andtourist needs, with local art, crafts andproduce very much in evidence. There areindependently owned speciality shops, excellent restaurants, tea shops, a couple ofsupermarkets, but hardly a 'tartan-tat'souvenir in sight.
Walk around streets with interestingarchitecture, the busy harbours or theparkland around the castle with miles ofpaths.
Tarbert (pop. ca. 500) is the 'capital' of Harris, with useful shops, parking and a choice ofeating places. If you miss old fashioned 'selleverything' ironmongers, Tarbert Stores is anabsolute treat! The Isle of Harris Distillery wascompleted in 2015 (open Monday- Saturday).
Take a detour to the east across the bridge tothe Isle of Scalpay, a thriving fishing andcrofting community with lots of wildlife, apopular bistro, plus makers of Harris Tweed,Knitwear and Scalpay Linen.
Leverburgh offers a couple of shops and bikehire, plus a café at the departure point for theferry to Berneray and the Uists.
The harbour is also a base for boat trips to St Kilda, operated by Kilda Cruises and SeaHarris - see page 22.
Sandy beaches:
Lewis - close to Stornoway on B895 road
alongside Broad Bay are the sheltered, sandy
beaches of Coll, Back and Gress. Pass through
Tolsta and continue around the cliffs to Tràigh
Ghearadha beach, or turn down to the long
expanse of its neighbour, Tràigh Mhòr.
On the west coast, Dalmor and Dalbeg are off
the A858 north of Carloway. From the B8011,
access Bosta beach on Bernera, with its Time
and Tide Bell. Further along and off the same
B8011 are Cliff, Cnip and Reef beaches, with
interesting offshore views to small, nearby
islands. Cnip is sheltered and a shooting
location for Katie Morag. Ardroil is a little
further on and home to Tràigh Uig, a huge
expanse of sand at low tide with high dunes
to provide shelter.
Harris - north of Tarbert, the narrow B887
road passes through the gardens of
Amhuinnsuidhe Castle, before reaching the
hamlet of Huisinis, with a superb beach and
views over the machair to the island of Scarp.
South west of Tarbert, the A859 takes you to
Luskentyre, Seilebost, Horgabost, Nisabost,
Borve and Scarista beaches. (For Luskentyre
access, turn off on a small road to the village.)
All are superb shell-sand beaches in
wonderful surroundings.

The Uists and Barra- nature’s haven
8 THE UISTS, BENBECULA, ERISKAY AND BARRA www.hebrideanhopscotch.com
Crannag, Isle of Barra.
Northbay, Barra.
Compared to Lewis and Harris, the Uists, alljoined by causeways, seem to have a softer, greener feel to them. The main islands areBerneray, North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula, SouthUist and Eriskay.
There is a central spine of rugged hills (notquite mountains), with a west coast that has analmost continuous length of stunning lightshell-sand Atlantic beaches and flower strewnmachair. Between the machair and the hills, there's a mix of low-lying agricultural land andmoorland. From the hills to the rocky inlets ofthe east coast is mainly higher level moorland.
With a total length of nearly 60 miles and apopulation of only around 4,500, the islandsare very peaceful, even at the height of theholiday season, wildlife includes rare birds, otters and sea mammals.
Barra is 40 minutes by ferry from Eriskay and, together with its attached neighbour, Vatersay, measures about 10 miles from north to south.
It's sometimes said that Barra includes a little ofeverything that's to be found elsewhere in theOuter Hebrides, with sandy beaches, spectacular hills, lochs and lots of history.
The island is home to just 1200 residents, someof whom may seem familiar to viewers of 'AnIsland Parish' - which featured the area in twoseries. Despite its tiny size, Barra has a direct airconnection to Glasgow, which flies from theonly beach airport in the world that hostsscheduled services.
“A superb service, which I have alreadyrecommended to several friends!
Thank you.”Mrs E - Redhill

Barra - Beyond Tràigh Mhor, the tiny Churchof Cille Bharra was built around 1500AD, andwithin the chapel, there's a replica of theancient runic stone that stood here.
Castlebay, Barra, is a busy little village, with amodern supermarket, bank and a fewindependent shops. Kisimul Castle, proudhome and symbol of the MacNeils, sitsmajestically on exposed rocks in the bay andis accessible to visitors by local boat.
Barra’s fascinating museum, Dualchas, has aseries of collections that document the localculture and social history that contribute tothe changing lifestyle and landscape of Barra.
The toffee shop in Barra claims to be home ofthe best traditional tablet in the Hebrides.
On Barra, join the small crowd that gathersdaily to watch the Glasgow flights landingand taking off on the beach.
In the evening, you might find an impromptumusical session in one of the bars. Barrapeople enjoy the craic.
Favourite beaches
Shell-sand beaches are found along almostthe entire west coast of these islands. We like:Balemartin (North Uist), Shell Bay / Culla Bay,Benbecula, Howmore (South Uist), BonniePrince Charlie's Beach (Eriskay), Tangasdal(Barra). It's not unusual to have a beachcompletely to yourselves, even on a weekdayin high season.
Nature highlights
North Uist - RSPB Balranald reserve's starspecies include corn buntings, corncrakes, lapwings and turnstones.
The road that crosses the central moorland ofNorth Uist can provide close views of eagles, harriers and owls.
Otter walks, at Langass, just east of Clachan.
South Uist - Loch Druidibeg National NatureReserve includes colourful flowery machairgrassland of the Atlantic coast giving way tolochs and moors with Eriskay ponies grazing.
Food
Several shops sell smoked salmon, trout orscallops for a luxury picnic - HebrideanSmokehouse at Clachan, North Uist isespecially good.

Out and about
Armadale has impressive Castle Gardens and theMuseum of the Isles with its visitor centre andnature trails.
Elgol is a delightful, small village with fine viewsinto the horseshoe of the Cuillins. For anadventure, you can get closer on a boat trip.

On the west coast road from Sligachan the firstmajor attraction on the western route is theTalisker distillery, where a small charge includesa sample and tour. 17 miles further on isDunvegan Castle, the family home of theMacleod Clan Chiefs for over 700 years, with fiveof its six floors open to view and gardens thatshow what can be achieved despite harshwinters.
No trip to Dunvegan is complete without a tripby boat to view the seals, a close-up experiencethat you'll almost certainly treasure forever.
The Duirinish Peninsula, a rugged area ofmoorland and flat-topped mountains, leads tothe Colbost crofting museum and the SkyeSilver jewellery shop.
North of Portree lies the wonderful landscape ofthe Trotternish Peninsula; the Old Man of Storr,Lealt Falls and the rock towers of Quiraing.

The Isle of Skye
Marginally smaller than Lewis, Skye is muchcloser to mainland Scotland - just one mile atthe Skye Bridge. It's perhaps more enjoyable totake a half hour ferry ride from the mainlandport of Mallaig to Armadale, then travel norththrough the island.
Skye presents some of the most variedlandscapes in the Hebrides, from the dominant, rugged mountain range of the Cuillins in thewest to the green, wooded Sleat Peninsula inthe south and soft sand beaches on the coast.
It's a fascinating place to linger, before or afteran Outer Hebridean tour, using the shortcrossing between Uig and Tarbert (Harris) orLochmaddy (North Uist). We're sure you won'tregret a stay here.

The Outer Hebrides is a popular place forthe setting of novels, films and TVseries, both factual and fiction.
Especially famous is Peter May’s Lewis trilogy ofThe Blackhouse, The Lewis Man and TheChessmen.
Peter names places in his books and it’s not toodifficult to find individual locations, followinglinks on our web site. There’s help also in theform of photos in his book, Hebrides, (producedtogether with David Wilson).
You could easily spend a week or two exploringand discovering the places and buildings.
Hebrides - Islands on the Edge was a hugelypopular series, narrated by Ewan McGregor andconcentrating on the wildlife and landscape.
Take a look at YouTube for excerpts of this andother films or programmes mentioned here.
Locating settings used in the children’s TV series,Katie Morag, requires a little detective work. Thestories take place on a fictional island and the
geographical relationship and appearance ofsome buildings is altered to suit the scripts.
Despite this, we have researched the stories andprovide a guide on our website.
Past TV documentaries have included An IslandParish, Monty Halls' Great Hebridean Escape, Coastand Countryfile. The places in these are easier toidentify and you may well meet some of thepeople during your visit. For example, Fr.JohnPaul is a familiar figure on Barra and one of ourB&B ladies supplied the pigs to Monty Halls.
The varied landscape has attracted filmproduction companies over a very long period.
Examples include award winning The Rocket Post(2004), set on the island of Scarp and filmed onTaransay and other Harris locations. Barra washome to filming of the legendary Whisky Galore(1949), the story of islanders trying to plunder50,000 cases of whisky from a grounded ship(based on the real life stranding on Eriskay ofthe SS Politician in 1941). Kubrick’s epic 2001: ASpace Odyssey (1968) was partially filmed on theeast coast of Isle of Harris, in an area close toLoch Airigh, representing Jupiter.
End-to-end cyclingholidays, includingbike hire, allow island
hopping at a slower pace.
Choose our leisurely 8 night
package (page 21), collect your bikes at one end
of the journey between Barra and Lewis, then
return them at the other end (you get a
discount for a Stornoway start).
The daily distance is mainly between 15 and 25
miles on roads that are much quieter than the
mainland - so you should have enough energy
to explore the many interesting side roads or
take it a bit easier if it’s windy or wet.

a foldable/rollable rucksack or soft bag, which
you can empty into the panniers, then attach it
with bungees to the rack top. Total capacity of
the two panniers is about 40 litres.
Bikes are hybrid models chosen for their
comfort, reliability and robustness. They have
wide range gears, mudguards, rack and decent
size tyres to help soak up the bumps.
If you’re arriving by sea, we include your ferry
journeys to and from the mainland, as well as
the inter-island ferries.
You'll only need to make your own travel
arrangements between your home and the
start/finish ports of Oban and Ullapool (a coach
links Ullapool and Inverness).
If you prefer air travel, we can arrange your
flights between Glasgow and the islands for you
- including an unforgettable take-off or landing
at Barra's unique beach airport.
You might find internet bargain fares on the
Flybe website, so we're happy for you to make
your own flight booking, but please ask us to
make sure we have availability of bikes and
accommodation first.
Luggage Transfer
Local taxi drivers will move luggage for you
between overnight stops, meaning you can
bring more with you and have less weight on
your bike. You arrange and pay the taxis direct
and should budget around £200 for the whole
trip, depending on the number of taxi journeys.
E-Bikes
If you, or your travel partner, would like some
help to make lighter work of the journey,
consider one of our electric-assisted bikes
(supplement payable).
You still have to pedal but the battery-powered
crank-drive motor makes the journey easy.
In the evening, just refresh the battery with the
supplied charger.
Please note that the panniers that fit e-bikes are,
we estimate, about 30 litres. You can attach your
own additional small bag to the rack top with a
bungee strap. Read more on our website.
Weather and other considerations
From May to September, winds are generally
lighter than in winter and we enjoy plenty of dry
days and sunshine, but you could experience
some stormy weather, during which, just like
anywhere else in the UK, the wind or rain may
be uncomfortable for riding a bike.
On such a day, we suggest you phone for a large
taxi (minibus-type), load your bikes and enjoy a
warm, dry ride to your destination.
You don’t need to be a keen cyclist, but you do
need a sensible level of fitness and be
competent to fix a puncture or tighten the odd
nut or bolt (tools supplied).
For the best chance of satisfactory cycling
weather we advise that bike holidays are only
booked from May to September inclusive.
Bring your own bike (or trike) if you prefer.

12 HOW TO BOOK
We check prices regularly, to make sure that our holidays are competitive, both in price and quality. Our aim is to offer you the bestvalue for money available. If, within 28 days of booking your holiday with us, you find an identical travel and accommodation package at a lower price with another travel operator, send us your original quotation from the operator.
We will then match the price or, at our option, cancel your booking and refund all monies paid, allowing you to accept the other operator’s offer.

PricesFrom £549Hebridean Island Hopper
A complete 5 night Hebridean ‘end-to-end’ holiday, from Glasgow by air, including flydrive car.
The Island Hopper is your unique opportunity to explore all the islands between Barra and Lewis using a hire carthat you pick up at one end of your adventure and leave at the other.
This means your holiday will include either a take-off or landing at Barra - an experience voted as the world’s ‘TopTouchdown’ by PrivateFly.com members in 2011. It’s the only airport in the world where scheduled flights landand depart on a beach. At the other end of the itinerary, Stornoway airport is still tiny by mainland standards, withfriendly, helpful service. There are security checks, of course, but otherwise, flying in the Outer Hebrides is justabout as easy as catching a bus.
Designed as a 5 night holiday (but you can add more nights if you wish), the Island Hopper route is only 134 miles from start tofinish. So you have plenty of time to explore the side roads along the way, leading to nature reserves, secluded harbours, amazingshell-sand beaches, remote settlements and picturesque places where you may wish to simply sit and while away an hour or twoof perfect peace.
At the end of each day, there will be a comfortable bed waiting for you at each accommodation of your choice - whether you have selected B&B’s, four-star hotels or a mix of properties, we’re certain you’ll enjoy wonderful hospitality.
Starting on a Thursday, your Flybe* direct flight is from Glasgow to the Isle ofLewis or Barra. We suggest you check the internet for the best value faresconnecting from your home to Glasgow.
Your Flydrive car is usually a Ford Focus or similar size car under 12 months old.(Collection/drop off at Barra Airport and our Stornoway office (taxi transferprovided from/to Stornoway airport). Your route follows the Island Experienceitinerary, shown on the next page.
As this holiday is limited by the number of vehicles available, it’s essential tobook early to secure a particular date.
*Flybe flights to the islands are operated by Loganair. Air fare prices may vary, according to seat availability, date of travel and time of booking.April to October (inclusive) only.
