Hellgate Elementary Measured Progress Test Analysis…

The following series of slides represents an analysis of Hellgate Elementary test results from the 2012/2013 school year on the Montana “Criterion Reference Test” instrument, Measured Progress. This CRT instrument is used by Montana to satisfy school accountability requirements contained in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. Each section of slides will have an introductory slide that will attempt to summarize the test data.

2

Measured Progress Test Analysis 2012/2013 Test Results…

The following series of slides deals with a graphing analysis of how Hellgate Elementary students (as an aggregate total) did on the reading and mathematics portions of the Measured Progress test, grades 3 through 8. Also, some graphs are presented that seek to establish where the district students are in those tested curriculum areas compared to other students throughout Montana.

From an analysis of the test data, though Hellgate Elementary did not meet the state’s benchmark of having 94.8% of our students considered proficient in reading and 90.0% of our students considered proficient in mathematics, one can still conclude that Hellgate Elementary students perform at par or better than other Montana students at every grade level (grades 3 through 8) in terms of the number of students qualifying as proficient in reading and mathematics.

Measured Progress Test AnalysisReading Analysis…

All Student Scores: the district is required by the No Child Left Behind Act to analyze the aggregate reading and mathematics test scores of its students, in grades 3 through 8, as one step in determining district Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on the Measured Progress test

• Slides 4 - 7: Graph depict the percentage of Hellgate Elementary students as well as Montana students falling into the following four No Child Left Behind accountability categories: (1) Advanced; (2) Proficient; (3) Nearing Proficiency; (4) Novice

• Slides 8 – 13 Graphs depict the percentage of Hellgate Elementary students as well as Montana students, broken out by individual grade level, falling into the following four categories(1) Advanced; (2) Proficient; (3) Nearing Proficiency; (4) Novice

• Slides 14 – 15: Graphs depict the percentage of Hellgate Elementary students as well as Montana students considered proficient

Sub-Group: Gender Considerations: Because the district has both boys and girls (over 30) enrolled in the district, the district is required to disaggregate and analyze their reading andmathematics test scores, separately, to determine district Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on the Measured Progress test.

Slides 56 – 59: Graphs depict the percentage of Hellgate Elementary students (male and female) as well as Montana students, broken out by individual grade level, falling into the following four categories (1) Advanced; (2) Proficient; (3) Nearing Proficiency; (4) Novice

Slides 60 – 61: Graphs depict the percentage of Hellgate Elementary students, disaggregated by gender and grade level considered proficient.

Hellgate Elementary Measured Progress Test Analysis

Achievement Gap…The following series of slides (70-85) represents an analysis of the achievement gap in reading and mathematics that exists between economically disadvantaged children and non-economically disadvantaged children attending Hellgate Elementary, Grades 3 through 5.

The disparity in achievement is muted in that all students are placed into the non-economically disadvantaged children category, entitled “All Students”. The scores for the economically disadvantaged children are then broken out into a specific sub-category entitled “Free/Reduced Lunch”. If the scores were dissaggregated in the “All Students” Category, with economically disadvantaged children scores removed from that category, the achievement gap disparity would be even greater than reported.

However, I believe the school district is dedicated to making steady progress in academically assisting our economically disadvantaged children as an examination of the following slides will indicate.

Hellgate Elementary Measured Progress Test Analysis

Achievement Gap - Part II…The following series of slides (87 – 90) represents an analysis f the achievement gap in reading and mathematics that exists between economically disadvantaged children and non-economically disadvantaged children attending Hellgate Elementary, Grades 3 through 8.

The disparity in achievement is muted if all students are placed into the non-economically disadvantaged children category, entitled “All Students”. However, if scores for the economically disadvantaged children are then broken out into a specific sub-category entitled “Free/Reduced Lunch” and removed from the “All Students” category, the achievement gap disparity is far greater. The following slides provide the evidence to support that belief.

However, though the disparity exists, I believe the school district is dedicated to making steady progress in academically assisting our economically disadvantaged children.

Hellgate Elementary Measured Progress Test Analysis

Student Performance Progression…The following series of slides (92 – 94) represents an analysis of the student performance progression (grades 3 through 8) over the past five years. An examination of the data presented will indicate that, on a district level, the district student performance is on an improvement trajectory with its students, including our economically disadvantaged students and special education students. Credit goes to the students, their parents, school administrators, district staff personnel, and the school board who have work cooperatively in the effort to help our students improve their academic performance on the Measured Progress test.
