    Congos Militia Violate Human Rights

The country of Congo in Central Africa is a very beautiful place with a lush tropical

forest and a diverse wildlife. Congo is home to the second largest ungle in the world. !nside the

ungles the people do not fear the natural wildlife" but rather the local militias that are #illing

people of all #ind while fighting over resources. At the head of this unfortunate conflict and

battle are the soldiers on the frontlines" but in Congo" children are the main fighting force for the

militias and are burdened with the orders of #illing. Congo has had a rough history from being

ruled by the $elgium government in the early %&''(s treated harshly by $elgians. Then in the

%)*'(s Congo(s first ruthless leader came into power. This man was Mobutu +e#o. +e#o drove

Congo into massive debt and hyperinflation" and he was finally e,iled after he was the cause for

a massive civil war. $ut" another ruthless leader came into power. The new leader #nown as

-abila started both of Congo(s first and second war which contained heavy causalities between

the groups who were fighting. Then" in ''& the reali/ations that the use of child soldiers in

these armies were at a very high number and steadily increasing. These children were enlisted by

force and against their own free will. 0ortunately" that same year the founder of the 0alling

1histles 2rgani/ation traveled to Congo and witnessed the tragedy first hand.

    The 0alling 1histles 2rgani/ation is a nonprofit organi/ation that helps create awareness

for the use of child soldiers in Congo. They mostly sell their old style whistles to create

awareness and have the slogan 3$e a 1histleblower for peace.3 The whistles were adopted from

the children used while in the militias to warn their comrades of enemy positions" and are now

used to protest the use of child soldiers. They have gained a lot of help from different

organi/ations and politicians to help them liberate the children from the militias" and help them

return to civilian life. That would be the aim of our organi/ation" to provide help and

rehabilitation for the children" so they could return to society and begin their lives as normal

    children.

1e are proposing to start our own local organi/ation here in Tempe that wor#s as the

middle man between students of Ari/ona +tate 4niversity and organi/ations in Congo that are

fighting to rehabilitate soldiers to get bac# into their society. 2ur organi/ation(s specific aim is to

educate the students and others about the situation in the Congo to help raise money and

awareness for the cause. 1e are proposing to students that helping a child in the Congo will

change their life forever. $y reflecting the tragedies that these children go through on a daily

basis" we hope to gain the support of many to help our organi/ation reach the goal of ending the

use of child soldiers. Through generous donations of as much money as our supporters can offer"

and through the spreading of #nowledge about the situation in Congo" we can help the old child

soldiers ma#e their return bac# to society. 1e feel that if awareness is spread" more will be done

in ma#ing this situation better. +aving as many of these unfortunate children form the

unnecessary blood shed in Congo is worth fighting for. 1e vow to help as many children as we

possible can. This proposal is indeed realistic and very attainable.

2ur plan of action for achieving the desired goals of our proposal will be e,ecuted to a

high standard of e,pectation and performance. $efore our organi/ation can get started on the

improvement of the well being of recovering child soldiers from the war in Congo" our plan of

action re5uires passionate" dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who are loo#ing to truly create

an impact on the situation. A strong foundation of people willing to create an impact for the

succession of our organi/ation to reach our proposal and help save the lives of innocent children

who are dragged into a war un#nown to them will hold the greatest importance of our

    organi/ation.

2nce a solid volunteer base is obtained" our organi/ation may begin e,ecuting our plan to

obtaining our proposal. A #ey goal for our organi/ation is educate the students of Ari/ona +tate

4niversity about the unfortunate events currently happening in Congo. Raising proper awareness

of the situation is a maor component in leading the charge to solving the problem of child

soldiers being used in Congo. The more people that are educated about it" the more li#ely it is for

people to reali/e the tragedy and want to help stop it. Reaching this #ey goal can be obtained

through the volunteers of the organi/ation. Having our members spread through out the Ari/ona

+tate campus to spread the word and hand out pamphlets would greatly increase the number of

potential supporters that we have. Having a supportive and dedicated support group will

empower not only our local organi/ation" but also there will be a great impact on the situation in

Congo. Another maor tool that we will utili/e for the spreading of #nowledge will be social

media. 1ith previous struggles against the war in Congo" mass media has proven to greatly

impact large communities with proper education of what is happening in countries around the

world. 1e can use this same system to our advantage and spread the word of our organi/ation to

    a much larger audience.

1ith a large support group of Ari/ona +tate students" local supporters and potentially

supporters across the country" our organi/ation will wor# directly with those organi/ations that

are currently in Congo fighting the cause. 2ur local organi/ation wor#s as a 6middle7man8 so to

spea#" and provides a direct way for anyone to get involved with the organi/ation to end the wars

in Congo and end the use of child soldiers. 1or#ing closes with programs such as the 0alling

Congo so that we can help children more directly.

The country of Congo has been riddled with conflicts due to civil wars and other

conflicts with neighboring countries. 1hen the militias started enlisting children to fight in the

wars that is when organi/ations around the globe began getting involved" and try to rehabilitate

these #ids to live normal lives. 1hat our organi/ation will do is that we will create awareness of

the ongoing problem" and provide aid to the organi/ations in Congo that are helping these #ids

return to normal civilian life. The entire mission of our organi/ation would be that we would

send money to these bigger organi/ations that are helping rehabilitate the affected children" so

they can continue their wor# to help these #ids get better and become normal children again.

Teaching these #ids how to live normal lives is a tough ob for the organi/ations that are helping

them" and the organi/ations could use as much help as they can get which our organi/ation will

be able to help them with. Rehabilitation programs #nown as 99R programs which stands for

9isarmament" 9emobili/ation" and Reintegration have helped many child soldiers become

regular children again. 1e intend to create maor awareness for the organi/ation by getting

media attention and getting university students involved with the organi/ation" and providing aid

to organi/ations that are helping these #ids become normal again.
