Married couples employed by the same company know all too well the double threat of a layoff. The reality hit hard for Chris and Cheryl Lofgren when they were laid off early last year from their jobs at Cummins Power Generation, a Fridley company that manufactures power generators. Both were let go as part of a larger workforce reduction because of a slump in product demand.

Both had worked at Cummins for two and a half years – Chris, now 27, as a forklift driver and line stocker, and Cheryl, now 26, on the assembly line. What was next for them? “I had no interest in going to school,” Cheryl said. But when representatives of a Minnesota displaced worker program talked with laid-off employees about educational opportunities, a welding course grabbed her attention. Chris was interested, too. They had taken a welding course in high school in St. Francis, Minn., where the two met in a gym class and became high school sweethearts.

They signed up at Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park for a 22-credit, WorkFast occupational certificate program in metal inert gas welding, called MIG welding for short. The dislocated worker program paid for their tuition, books and welding supplies, gas mileage to and from classes and day care for their young daughter during class.

The class, part of the college’s WorkFast program leading to employment, was a fit for them both. Welding fed Cheryl’s artistic bent, and it’s not hard for her, she said. “It’s just being good at it that’s harder.”

Sparks fly for the LofgrensShort-term welding program turns

double layoff into new career

opportunity for married couple

Cheryl Lofgren, left, and her husband, Chris Lofgren, learned welding at Hennepin Technical College.

Page 7: Hennepin Tech CTS Fall Schedule 2010

Fall 2010

www.hennepintech.edu/cts

Her husband, Chris, grew up using an arc welder his dad bought when Chris was a kid. He took all the welding courses offered in high school and a machine shop class. “I just like building stuff,” he said.

Cheryl, the only woman to complete the class, said she had some good-natured teasing from her classmates. Instructor Chris Hensiak complimented her skills. “She was very good” and was first in class to complete the first of its three levels, he said. Her husband did well, too. While one final project was required, Chris Lofgren built four instead. Both were among top students in the class. The couple’s shared welding skills spawned some playful banter between the two.

“We used to compete,” Cheryl said. “We still do. In the class, I’d say, ‘Look at this weld. Mine’s way better than yours.’ Or I’d finish something before him. Then he’d finish before me.”

Chris said he isn’t as competitive. As welders, they’re about the same and make a good team, he said. The class also studied blueprint and math for welding. “My wife helped with the math,” he said.

Cheryl had been laid off for six months and Chris for four when they completed the welding course in late June 2009. “We drove in our certificates

(to the Cummins company) that day,” Cheryl said. “They told us to come back as welders.” On July 6, the couple went back to work.

Chris has worked exclusively as a welder since returning to Cummins and likes the independent nature of the work. “It’s just me and my welder,” he said. “I actually love it.”

Though welding is Cheryl’s primary job, she’s “a floater” who also works in assembly and the paint department when help is needed. She’ll proudly tell you that she’s only the third woman ever to work in the welding department at Cummins. She works days, and Chris works the overnight shift, which allows them evenings at home with their 5-year-old daughter. The couple lives in Isanti.

Doing work they like isn’t the only perk for Chris and Cheryl. Their jobs as welders pay them $2.30 an hour more than their previous jobs at the company. And in case of another layoff, workers in other departments who have more seniority can’t bump them from their welding jobs. “That’s because it’s a skilled job,” Cheryl said. “It’s definitely given us more security in having a job at Cummins.”

Both of the Lofgrens demonstrate welding techniques that helped them get rehired at the company where they previously worked.

CNC Milling Setup & OperationCNC (Computer Numerical Control) Setup Technicians run computer-controlled machine tools that produce highly precise parts used in many of the products we use on a daily basis. Machinists may tend one machine or several at one time. Duties vary from operating the machine to setup of cutting tools, fixtures, programs, and producing the complete part. This program builds upon the skills developed on the job with additional training in computer numerical control. Students need previous machining experience to qualify for the program. Emphasis will be placed on basic programming, editing, and operation of CNC milling machines. Students will earn 14 credits and have the opportunity to study for and take two National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) high-stakes, industry credentials. 14 CreditsMTRF, August 23 – December 10 $2,749, Pyzik, Brooklyn Park

CNC Swiss Turning CenterSwiss-type lathes are a specialized type of lathe used for machining high precision parts in large quantities. The productivity of the Swiss-type lathe is high as the machine can perform many operations in a single setting that would typically require two or more machines to produce. Swiss-type lathes are particularly valuable to the growing medical device industry. Production of the tiny implantable, high precision parts made from exotic materials like titanium is a good fit for these machines. Skills needed for setup and operation of Swiss-type lathes include basic machining skills and knowledge of CNC Swiss-type machining centers. Prerequisite: Graduation from, or concurrent enrollment in a 2-year machine tool program, or a minimum of 2 years related work experience. 9 CreditsM – F, August 23 – December 10 $2,950, Ellingson, Brooklyn Park

"I was told by the employment agency that by attending the Medical Device Manufacturing WorkFast program that that was a deciding factor in my being hired. It was nice for me personally to be able to speak the "lingo" of the medical device industry during the interview and actually understand what I was talking about and sound literate on the subject. Kudos to Naomi and you for putting on a great class."

While traditional safety and compliance training has emphasized OSHA standards, “Rethinking Safety” begins with the premise that standards cannot make workers safe; only hazard awareness and safe work practices will.

“Rethinking Safety” uses interactive technology, real life scenarios and the student’s own life experience to discover the root cause of incidents common in their industry and asks them to describe what would be required to effect real change in their work environment.

Each session is customized to match the work environment of the participants and is flexible enough to accommodate discussions and facilitate problem solving exercises.

The class intends to get employees thinking about safety the way risk managers do: from a strategic point-of-view. The course may be used for operational level workers or engineers/managers wishing to learn more about accidents and their root cause.

See page 29 for course listing.

HTC was awarded $258,120 to develop curriculum for a four-hour Upper Midwest Rigging Safety Training Program. Fifty classes will be conducted in a five-state area for small construction companies in the upper Midwest. The mobile crane training will include information on hoists, slings, rigging, materials handling, and the applicable OSHA standards. The courses will include hands-on training and interactive training elements.

Medical Device MaufacturingHennepin Technical College (HTC) now offers a medical device manufacturing technology program leading to an occupational certificate, which prepares individuals for medical device industry positions such as entry-level assemblers, quality control specialists or machine operators. The 16-credit program can be completed in one to two semesters.

“The program offers a unique hands-on training opportunity,” said Katherine Sellner, director of health sciences and biomanufacturing for HTC’s Customized Training Services. “Students experience a ‘clean room’ environment, learn to use inspection and measurement tools, and practice proper documentation techniques.” The courses in the 16-credit certificate program have been developed to serve incumbent and entry-level knowledge and skill levels. Courses are taught at HTC’s Eden Prairie campus. Sellner added that industry support for the program is strong because it addresses the need for qualified individuals and emphasizes the regulated environment in which medical device companies function.

Research and Development Lab TechnicianAlso new at HTC is the Research and Development (R & D) Lab Technician program. R & D Technicians are critical members of a company’s research and development team and look to enable new products by understanding, evaluating, and delivering new technologies and concepts. Much of this advanced understanding comes from laboratory data. R & D Lab Technicians are needed in every company across multiple industries that develop new products. This 60 credit degree prepares individuals to immediately contribute to the research and development process of planning, coordinating, collecting, analyzing, interpreting and communicating data.

”I am very hesitant to hire trainers outside of

Children's to present on topics related to

pediatric emergencies. Al [Benney} is a rare exception. He knows

his stuff. He is a very skilled presenter and I

never have to wonder if he really knows how to

teach pediatric skills. I've enjoyed working

with Al and wanted to pass along some of the

great feedback we've been receiving from your

simulation training. I have to stress that Al is

the biggest part of this. You could have all the

simulation technology in the world but without

the relevant experience and presentation style

Al brings to the training, it would not have the

same impact. I truly believe we are

improving provider skills in handling

pediatric patients as a result of these training

opportunities.”– Kristi Moline

To Protect and Serve Customer Service Skills for… Police, Fire, First Responders, Security Guards and EMS Professionals *POST Board CertifiedThe heroics, skill and bravery involved in dealing with an emergency are only a part of the story. The rest includes the loss, pain and trauma that most people experience anytime they are faced with trauma or loss. It’s true that people want well trained and highly skilled professionals to deal with the incredible challenges an emergency often creates. But equally as important is to remember that a human being – under unbelievable emotional strain – may need something more. They often need to be comforted, assured, supported and understood as their resilience fades and despair settles in. Just as the skills required to deal with an emergency are learned and practiced, the skills to provide

impeccable service must be learned and practiced, as well. In this seminar, written specifically for peace officers, fire fighters, emergency professionals and first responders, you will learn:• Why service skills are as

important as technical skills• The impact of service on

your department’s community support

• How service affects morale and teamwork

• The 4 cornerstones of service and how to build on them

• How to communicate effectively and positively while under stress

• The importance of dealing with emotional behaviors effectively

• How to choose to perform and function at your best daily

Respect Effect™ Creating and Maintaining a Respect-ful and Lawful Work EnvironmentIn 1998, the Supreme Court ruled that an employer that fails to adequately train its management and staff on avoiding harassment and discrimination in the workplace may have no defense to a claim against it for harassment. Federal and state courts and the EEOC require employers to make a “good faith effort” to prevent harassment and discrimination at work, and to correct problems when they arise.Respect Effect was designed by attorneys and professional trainers with extensive experience in employment law, diversity and optimizing employee performance to create a respectful and productive workplace free from harassment and discrimination. The class is highly interactive, skills-based and sensitive to current issues. It also complies with the laws in all 50 states. Respect Effect is simply best in class for helping employers meet their legal obligation to provide anti-harassment and discrimination training and build a productive and respectful work environment. 0.35 CEU001593: T, October 5, 8:30 a.m. – Noon, 1 session, $119 Engelmeier / Fischer (Attorneys, Engelmeier & Umanah), Eden Prairie

Re-Thinking SafetyAmerican workers face a variety of predictable hazards on the job and statistics show they suffer the same types of injuries year after year. While traditional safety and compliance training has emphasized OSHA standards, “Rethinking Safety” begins with the premise that standards cannot make workers safe; only hazard awareness and safe work practices will.“Rethinking Safety” uses interactive technology, real life scenarios and the student’s own life experience to discover the root cause of incidents common in their industry and asks them to describe what would be required to effect real change in their work environment.

Each session is customized to match the work environment of the participants and is flexible enough to accommodate discussions and facilitate problem solving exercises. The class intends to get employees thinking about safety the way risk managers do: from a strategic point-of-view. The course may be rolled out for operational level workers or engineers/managers wishing to learn more about accidents and their root cause. In this class we will break into groups and review case studies involving electrocutions, falls, caught-in and struck-by and discuss what happened, why people do what they do and what can we do to change that attitude.12:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. 1 session, $50 (includes lunch)

Supervising in a Manufacturing Environment8-part SeriesThe manufacturing industry frequently fills supervisory openings with the most highly-skilled employee, regardless of his/her supervisory skills, knowledge and abilities. This Manufacturing Supervisory Development Series delivers industry specific supervisory training. The program targets the skills manufacturing supervisors need to achieve higher levels of employee involvement and effectively deal with employment issues. This is not a “canned” supervisory/leadership program. We’ve stripped out the issues that don’t apply in a manufacturing setting, and topics not found in traditional supervisory / leadership courses have been added. Examples, case studies, class discussions and materials will reflect the supervisory role in the manufacturing environment. You will learn:• Guiding Principles for

Supervision• Building & Maintaining a

Productive Staff• Leading Change• Situation Analysis• Decision-making• Employee development and

Customer Service for Manufacturing CompaniesThis program partners with any quality program – Six Sigma, Lean, etc. – to provide a complete approach to organizational success. It addresses the human side of manufacturing. While quality addresses the processes and function of production, The Gold Standard addresses the relationships between departments, coworkers, suppliers and customers. Its purpose is to build successful work relationships to improve productivity, cooperation, collaboration, and retention. It’s not easy to address relationship issues inside a fast-paced plant or on the manufacturing floor. But manufacturing employees are dedicated to their jobs not because of the machines they operate or even their pay. Like most people in the workplace, they love or hate their job because of their day-to-day interactions with others. This program is about creating an environment where people are willing to work together as effectively and efficiently as the machines they operate. 0.8 CEU001587: R, October 14, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. 1 session, $85 Litt (Manufacturing Training Expert; Professional Development Expert), Eden Prairie
