You Ought To Know......the past three months (actually the first snow hit in October) tested the stamina of every beef producer in the nation. This snowball effect tested virtually everything ... the feed yard, the fuel bill, the machinery, your spouse’s patience, the accuracy of your rifle when shooting at coyotes and those who moved their calving back to April, are now wishing they would have started in June. It makes me wonder how many old-timers may pull the pin and pack it in after this past winter. Travel throughout the bull sale season was not much fun, as a matter of fact, downright dangerous at times; breeders should be thankful to all buyers who made a special effort attending their sale or made their selections by telephone or the wire. Let’s not neglect the core of dedicated auctioneers, sale managers and ring personnel who had to be there ... driving hours and hours from location to location.

The past three months also tested the bull market, especially after the record run in 2012. More bulls were passed, but more were offered and no doubt Mother Nature affected attendance. But what we saw, first and foremost, was the fact that there are fewer cows out there needing a bull. On the other hand, in sales where females were offered, purebred or commercial, demand was brisk and active. The events of spring 2013 boded well for the livestock industry ... bulls sold very well and most importantly we are still on the low side of a bull market with a huge upside. Barring a miracle, it will take most of the spring to get this crop seeded and we will have plenty of forage with an even fewer number of cows.

The problem lays in supply and consumption, to be mainly accurate ... the type of consumption. We must realize that beef is a luxury item in virtually all countries throughout the world with the exception of a couple of South American nations. As Canadians, we are small potatoes in the big picture and net exporters consuming only a limited amount of high quality product we produce. Our largest trading partners are adjacent to our southern border, which is a good thing for the coming years; but our major packing plants are foreign controlled hence our markets are under the control of others. (We have been under their control for decades; we just hate to admit it.) We are all aware of the fact that the North American beef breeding herd is at historic lows and some analysts are claiming the restocking has not yet started. Beef consumption on this continent has been slowly ebbing while the Asian nations, in some cases, have risen as much as ten percent over the previous year.

Canada’s largest trading partner, the USA, produces nearly one-quarter of all the beef in the world, but their economy is in the tank. The high unemployment in the world’s wealthiest nation has cash-

strapped Americans avoiding restaurants where beef is a common entree and has them switching to lower cost, non-meat dishes, at home. At the height of the recession, the beef industry

saw a decline in high-end steak consumption such as rib eye and tenderloin in fine dining establishments. A popular cost-cutting tactic has been to purchase ground beef, often times

in bulk, instead of steak, creating what has become known as the Hamburger Economy. To balance their consumption ebb, exports from the United States have risen steadily to

places like Japan, South Korea and Russia and the more expensive cuts, like rib eyes and strip loins that for years were consumed in country, are increasingly finding their way

to affluent overseas customers who are expanding their presence in fine dining. The most positive factor of selling American beef to Asia is these Asian countries have

very strong economic growth tendencies and can pay their bills.

The most popular cut of meat in the United States is ground beef a.k.a. hamburger. We all know it is sourced mainly from cows, bulls and a quarter

of each fat steer or heifer slaughtered. The majority of ground beef is sold in a paper wrapper and usually out of a drive-through window. As we

are all aware of the many fast food chains throughout our nation and spread world-wide, here are some stats and trivia about the largest

chain, McDonalds. (Source: Business Insider)

- McDonalds sells more than 75 hamburgers every second- McDonalds $24 billion in revenue makes it the 90th-largest

economy in the worldCounting $32 billion in revenue from franchise stores,

McDonalds claims the 68th biggest economy, bigger than Ecuador

- McDonalds hires around 1 million workers in the US every year

- The Queen of England owns a McDonalds near Buckingham Palace as part of her vast real

estate portfolio



- Americans alone consume one billion pounds of beef at McDonalds in a year five and a half million head – just a little under half of the entire cattle population in Canada- McDonalds is opening one restaurant in China every day- McDonalds services 119 countries and 64 million customers a day

So why hamburger ... what is the big deal about ground beef! First and foremost, if you have checked at your local super market, you’ll find that they’re sure not giving it away and that it is rarely on sale anymore. If you have been through McDonalds lately, you will find that the burgers have increased considerably in price during the past year or so; yet the consumer continues to drive-through. (Trivia – ground beef from a fat steer will yield roughly over a 1000 quarter pounders.) Secondly, bull sales this past spring have shown us that there are fewer cows, therefore, with restocking, fewer females will be killed and shortages will hit the pipeline. It is a simple equation of supply and demand. The last thing I pull out of my freezer ... hamburger.

When will this shortage occur ... very soon? How long will it last? Well ... I’m bullish ... for the next decade. The restocking of the North American cow herd will be a slow process as it is difficult to keep kids on the farm and labor and associated costs continue to rise every day. I anticipate trade from our friends south of the border (through their restocking process) will access breeding females, especially from grass bordering states. Purebred breeders and their associations have spent a tremendous amount of revenue chasing and documenting the marbling factor in beef cattle. Down the road, we could well end up with two grading systems ... one for the marbled white table cloth trade, while the other will be based only on cut ability and yield, with little to no fat requirement. Feeding techniques could change, frame size could increase, males not castrated and fed as bulls ... some breeds will benefit while others may not suit either category. The one thing for certain, that will not change, is the maternal aspect of breeds with strong maternal traits.

But I do know that there will be tasty, tender, well-marbled beef at the T Bar Invitational and great fellowship as we try to raise funds for the future of our breed. Plan to be with us for a great event and remember ... a handicap is used only for an excuse!

Brands, the largest fast food company, with thirty-eight thousand restaurants in over one-hundred and twenty countries in the world, posted a five year growth rate at 13.29%. YUM Brands franchises include Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut and Wingstreet restaurants.

Annual income spent on food throughout the world shows some very interesting facts. In Pakistan over 45% is spent on food, India 35.8% and China 33.9% as compared to Canada at 9.1%, the United Kingdom at 8.9% and the United States, the lowest at just under 7%. For the coming year, global analysts predict North American beef consumption to wane; while countries like China and India having some of the world’s largest population, will increase per capita consumption. These figures bode well for the future and the beef exporting countries.

For every glowing picture, there is always a dark side. Although there appears to be a strengthening of global economy, the world’s largest beef producer’s government show signs of instability. Its huge trade deficit is daunting with no easy solution. The U.S. cannot afford to shut processing facilities, laying off thousands in a shaky economy, due to lack of supply. This scenario could well-be good trade news for its bordering countries. No doubt the issue of food safety will be on-going, but the market remains bullish despite the X-L fiasco and Brazil’s BSE masking.

The decade ahead offers exciting times and opportunities...we will see investments by foreign parties enter the production and marketing of our domestic product. The ever changing social media and communications will affect this rapidly changing era. Change is endless, healthy and requires a young fresh attitude and enthusiasm.









“Hereford - Champion of the World 2012” & “Hereford - Miss World 2012”

Competitions were judged between December 1st and December 7th, 2012.

The competition consisted of 80 National Champions from 32 countries. It was run via the “Hereford Talk” page on

Facebook and the www.herefordbreeder.net website.

The 5 judges were Serafin Sillero (Argentina), Harley van Rhyn (South Africa), Robert Wilson (Scotland),

Wade Perks (United States of America) and the members of “Hereford Talk” on Facebook.

General consensus was that the competition raised massive awareness to the quality and diversity of Hereford genetics across the world. To view pictures and details on all the cattle one can visit www.herefordbreeder.net.

Volume II of the competition will take place in December 2013.Future developments include using video footage as well as performance data. The main objectives of the initiative include promoting awareness, goodwill and trade by

telling the global Hereford story.

During the summer, I attended 4-H Provincial Judging where I was awarded the chance to travel to Denver, Colorado for the National Western Stock Show this January. I was greeted by my host family, the Phillips, at the airport where we then traveled to the stock show. We checked me in as an international guest at the office and I was asked to put my pin on the map, showing where I was from, in my case Vermilion, Alberta. The stock show was huge, much larger than the shows that we have in this area. Larger than Farmfair and Agribition, there is hardly any comparison really. The stock show was so large that it took us all four days just to be able to see everything thoroughly. There was an entire building filled with cattle which overflowed out into the stock yards, where temporary outdoor pens were set up. As I was walking through the cattle, I was avidly searching for some fellow Canadians, but it seemed that I was all alone there. That didn’t bother me any. I like explaining to the Americans the differences of home and there, and telling them about my home. I finally started to get tired from the travelling and the long day, so my host family and I grabbed a bite to eat at a Chili’s and continued home. The Phillips don’t actually live in Denver itself. They are about an hour away in a small town called Sterling. When I say Sterling is a small town, what I mean is it is three houses, a post office, and a tea shop that are along the highways. However, the area is gorgeous down there.

My Experience at the National Western Stock Show By Darian Livingstone



My first couple days at the stock show were super busy, the Thursday especially. We woke up early that morning and drove back to Denver to attend the collegiate judging competition. It was sure different being able to roam the classes as I pleased, rather than being on a time limit and being told which order I had to go in. I quite liked the freedom to spend as much time as I pleased. The stock classes were chosen well; I was able to work through the majority of them but there were a couple times that I had to have an internal debate with myself while deciding which order I should place them in. After the judging competition was over, Gina and I walked the yards for some of the day, as well as going upstairs and checking out the trade fair. Later that night, we attended the rodeo, and although there weren’t many Canadian entries, I found myself cheering for quite a bit of the livestock, as most of them were from the Calgary Stampede. I got some funny looks from the peo-ple surrounding me but I just showed them my Canadian pin proudly displayed on my 4-H jacket and they understood. To round off our already busy day, Gina had bought us concert tickets to see Josh Abot play at the Grizzly Rose, a very popular dance hall in Denver. By the time that the concert was over and people were starting to head home, we were a very tired bunch of people and I was fast asleep before my head even hit the pillow that night. Friday was the day of the collegiate judging awards banquet. I attended as a guest of honour and was able to meet the winner of the competition. We now have plans to meet during the summer when he comes to Alberta as part of his award. Saturday was another fun, yet busy day. During the stock show, there was also a hunting and fishing expo

going on in downtown Denver, so we decided to take the opportunity and get a change of scenery. There were tons of people there! Because the expo was in downtown, it gave me an opportunity to see the entire city during the day. As the day passed, Gina and I decided that we should take advantage of the cheaper shopping while I was in the states and she showed me all of the good places to buy clothes. Let’s just say that I had a very difficult time figuring out how I was going to take this stuff home in the one suitcase I brought with me. That night, to round my trip off, Gina took me bowling with one of her friends. I completely forgot that they had ten pin bowling instead of the five that we have here, and I definitely should not quit my day job any time soon. After indulging in a large, greasy pizza, tall glasses of fizzy “soda,” and several games of bowling, we started to realize that I would soon have to go home. Sunday morning came all too soon and Gina and her father, Bill, drove me to the airport. Gina kept trying to convince her dad to keep driving right past and we’d eventually end up in Kansas. That sounded alright to me because I had never seen Kansas before. Although I hadn’t known these awesome people for very long, I feel I became very good friends with them. Our goodbyes were reluctant, but we knew it wouldn’t be too long before we saw each other again because Gina and I had already started making plans for her to come up during the Calgary Stampede. I was able to take so many things away from this opportunity and I’ve made so many connections as well. I am so thankful for being presented with this chance and for the people who made it possible. I highly suggest that everyone that is involved in 4-H to take every chance that they get to attend every program that you are able to because the number of opportunities that you can be presented with is staggering.

Artificial insemination (AI) in cattle is hardly new technology with reports of cows being inseminated with fresh semen dating back to the middle ages. English scientists were the first to freeze bovine semen in 1949 which facilitated long-term preservation and widespread distribution that is undoubtedly the cornerstone event responsible for unprecedented genetic advancement that we have seen over the last several decades.

At one time, bull semen collection and distribution organizations were numerous. Mergers and consolidation over the last 30 years have resulted in fewer than 10 such establishments remaining in existence in Canada. Deregulation in the 1990s allowed the collection and freezing of bovine semen exclusively for on-farm use; without the need for lengthy health certification or accredited facilities. The number of cows inseminated in Canada actually peaked in the 1960s and has been in decline ever since. This decline should not be attributed to poor results, but instead is really a case of working yourself out of a job. The dairy industry has always utilized AI extensively. As productivity, more specifically milk production, improved fewer cows were needed; therefore, fewer cows needed to be inseminated.

The beef industry was initially reluctant to embrace AI fearing that it would reduce the value of bulls. The proportion of beef cattle AIed in Canada and the US remains small to this day and is largely limited to seedstock producers. Without at least some AI it is probably difficult to remain competitive in the purebred sector. Advantages for purebred producers include access to new genetics at an affordable price. Not only do they have a chance to have progeny from expensive bulls, but they can inseminate a few cows without the risk associated with breeding the entire herd to what may later turn out to be a genetic disaster. Having the ability to offer progeny from a variety of proven and marketable genetic lines to commercial bull buyers is another benefit.

Artificial insemination can also be useful for commercial producers. Yes, there are numerous top quality bulls being purchased nowadays by commercial producers, and few of us would argue the fact that a bull is more effective at detecting heat and breeding cows than we are – but there are advantages to be had through AI: 1) Uniformity of the calf crop – there is no way that

natural service can exceed the ability of AI to generate large numbers of half-sib progeny in a single season. You could potentially AI 100 heifers, or more, all in the same day to a single AI sire. With a 60% pregnancy rate, 60 calves would be born over a 10 day to 2 week period; 2) Increased performance of calves – assuming that superior bulls are available through AI one can select bulls using highly accurate expected progeny differences (EPDs); 3) Access to proven genetics – many older AI sires will have 100’s, or even 1000’s of progeny with numerous sons and daughters in production. Semen from many excellent older sires may be available to commercial producers at a reduced cost; 4) Introduction of new genetics – sample a new line, or a new breed without buying a bull; 5) Potentially shorter calving season – complete your AI program on the first day of the breeding season and turn the bull in for cleanup a few days later; 6) Increased utilization of bull power – semen can be frozen from a valuable bull and used to inseminate more cows in a season. In addition, a successful AI program might enable a producer to keep fewer bulls; 7) Sexed semen – available from an ever increasing number of beef bulls.

So why don’t more commercial breeders use AI? Probably because it takes too much time and is too complicated. Learning and perfecting the technical skills requires a short course and a great number of hours spent practicing with animals. For a beginner inseminator with a tank full of expensive semen, a long list of cows and no mentor, the first breeding season might well be his last. Twice daily heat checking gets old pretty fast; especially, if you have other jobs to do. I think the best solution for many of those wanting to try AI for the first time is to hire an inseminator and use Fixed-Time AI. Fixed-Time AI means that you pick the date and time you want to inseminate and then, with a knowledgable accomplice, you choose the most appropriate estrus synchronization protocol to fit your situation. The most popular and generally effective protocols use a vaginal implant containing progesterone called a CIDR (pronounced Cē der, like the tree) which stands for Controlled Internal Drug Release. Cattle will need to go through the chute 3 to 4 times including insemination, but each time through handling gets easier. Protocols can be completed in as few as 8 to 10 days and cleanup bulls can be turned in about 10 days later; sooner if parentage will not be a concern at calving.

Most producers should be happy with a conception rate between 60 and 70% to a single insemination. Poor results are below 40 to 50%. Aside from putting good quality semen in the right place at the right time, success depends on a lot of little things I include under the heading MANAGEMENT. Cows should be at least 40 days post calving; 50 to 60 is even better and on a good plane of nutrition including an effective mineral program. Heifers should be at least 65 to 70% of mature weight. Facilities should be in good order and handlers should be skilled. Modified live vaccines should be administered weeks ahead of beginning a protocol to avoid inflammation of the ovaries that may reduce conception rates. All protocols should be written and times of treatment recorded. I prefer to

use a 2 cc volume for each drug employed in the protocol to prevent dosing mistakes. Avoid including more cows than can be inseminated in a 4 hour period.

Calving distribution to a single insemination date will be within a 10 to 14 window; however, it is wise to be prepared to handle 1/3 of the calves over a 2-3 day period. Failure to do so could prove to be a problem in the event of a cold snap.

A successful first go usually leads to repeated use of Fixed-Time AI technology and the generation of many excellent herd replacements.

Introduces New President and BoardCanadian Western Agribition (CWA) introduced a new leadership team at its Annual General Meeting, Friday, April 12 with the election of its new executive team and Board of Directors. In addition, CWA also introduced a new President.

Reed Andrew of Regina, sK was elected President of CWA. Andrew has been a volunteer at CWA for 35 years. He is a long time commercial cattle exhibitor and served for 7 years on the CWA Board of Directors prior to being elected to the executive Committee in 2007. While on the Board, Andrew served as Commercial Cattle Chair, Beef Chair, trade show Chair and was instrumental in launching the brand new Grain expo in 2012.

This is the first time in the history of CWA a second generation President has been elected. Barry Andrew was President 1980-1981 and 32 years later Reed is following in his late father’s footsteps.

“It’s a real privilege and honor to be elected President of Agribition,” said Reed Andrew, President of CWA. “Agribition has been a part of our family since the beginning. It is exciting to be a part of the show as it moves forward.”

Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) has learned that long-time CWA supporter Barry Andrew, who passed away last December, has left a generous bequest of $25,000 to the organization, which will be designated toward the Barry Andrew Family scholarship. This is the first ever donation of its kind to the over 43 year old organization. “We are deeply touched by Barry’s generousity and support of CWA and the agriculture industry,” said Marty seymour, CeO of CWA. “Not only did Barry believe in Agribition, he believed in agriculture and the importance of getting young people involved.” There is historical significance behind this unique bequest. Andrew was one of the founding members of CWA and served as the fifth President from 1980-1981. He was actively involved in CWA as a long standing committee member and livestock exhibitor. Andrew was the recipient of numerous CWA awards. In 2010 he was one of the first inductees in the Agribition Hall of Fame as one of the original founding members. In 2007 Andrew received the Chris sutter award for exemplary contribution to the development of Agribition. “My dad gave his life to the show, and the show gave our family so much in return that it has become part of three generations of Andrews,” said Reed Andrew, son of the late Barry Andrew. “My dad wanted this scholarship to help young people advance in agriculture, but he also hoped it would encourage others to consider similar donations. It is the second last day of April and this morning I woke

up to a six inch blanket of snow. I was not shocked, as

winter has not wanted to move on and leave us alone. The

winter of 2012/2013 will go down in history as one of the

longest and most brutal in recent memory. Our area has

now been under continuous snow cover for six months

and one week, and people are sick of it! Weather is one

topic where rarely everyone agrees but city people, grain

farmers and livestock producers all want to see sun and

heat.

Winter has had its toll on the beef industry. Cattle have

eaten through feed piles and green grass cannot come

quick enough for most producers vying Mother Nature’s

fury. I know for many, it is testing positive attitude and

faith in the business. Prices are decent but not anywhere

near what many of us predicted. The cost of gain has

simply eaten up margins in the cattle feeding business.

However, remain steadfast in your commitment to the

beef industry… I believe the change is imminent.

Things are lining up for ample feed grains, reducing the

cost of gain by up to half; the US Corn Belt has gone

from a desert to a marsh. Producers are complaining

about saturated fields that are too wet for planting, but

that region is more prepared for wet conditions than dry.

A large portion of the Corn Belt is tile drained to manage

excess moisture and there will be a window where corn

is planted and lots of it. In Western Canada, seeding keeps

falling back further and further; producers are hopeful of

getting started by the May long weekend. Every week that

goes by will change seeding plans and the later it gets, the

more barley will be seeded. By fall we could easily see

corn and barley prices half of what they are today; lighting

the fire that we have been looking for in the calf market.

The record low cow numbers in the world (and let’s face

it), substantial calving losses will only add fuel to the fire.

If average moisture comes to pass in North America,

it will create ample feed supplies and calf prices higher

than ever. We will then see another anomaly as heifer calf

prices could surpass that of steers, as the long process of

rebuilding a depleted cow herd begins. Very few heifers

have been retained this year for breeding; last year there

were thousands bought on speculation but with the hard

feeding winter and feed costs, there was no money to be

made selling replacements. However, this year I feel those

of you who have planned to do it again this year… will

strike pay dirt. There is an old investment strategy about

selling when the masses are buying and buying when the

masses are selling, as most people tend to be reactive and

not proactive.

As usual I like to throw my little tip at the end; if you have

not semen tested your herd bulls yet, do it now, as the

winter has had a negative effect on more than just the

feed bag. If you do not make it a practice to semen test

every herd bull in your battery, please do so this year, as

I have heard some people have had more bulls fail than

pass. The time and money spent testing bulls is a drop in

the bucket compared to the loss you could suffer by not

doing so… remember, the longer you wait the harder it is

to source the bulls needed, especially ones of quality.
