The committee of Friends of the Sea charity enjoying a welcome glass

of champagne while waiting for guests to arrive for a Gala Dinner - Titanic

Remembered held at the Grange Thornton Hough recently.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside, Dame Lorna Muirhead was the

principal guest with Ken Pye, a local historian providing the commentary

of the happenings on that fateful night 100 years ago. Gwen Burgessentertained the guests with Irish music and Arvensis Quartet provided

the background music for the evening. Mrs Patsy Dixon, Chairman, in the

centre of the picture, said that she was delighted at the support from the

general public particularly as so many turned up in appropriate dress for

the period - some wearing life-jackets and a stoker managed to inltrate

into the 1st class dining room!

The prot from the evening will be used to support local maritime charities,

including Sea Cadets, Sea Scouts, UKNBlind Sailing School and Liverpool

HESWALL Primary School has made

signicant progress over recent years,

according to the Ofsted inspectors.

The school was inspected again re-cently and was judged to be good in all

areas. The inspection team also noted

that attainment in SATS exams at the

end of years two and six is outstanding.

Head teacher John Roberts said: It

is important to realise that the school

has moved forward signicantly since

2006 in order to maintain a

good rating, the framework has

been altered twice since our lastinspection with a view to raising

the bar!

Heswall Primary is one of the

rst schools on the Wirral to be

judged under the new Ofsted

framework, which is considered

to be tougher than previously.

The school has embarked on

improvements in a number

of areas. There is a new wayof teaching foundation subjects, such as

geography, history and DT. It involves en-

couraging more creativity among the pupils

which should help them retain skills in these

subjects.

The school recently invested

4,000 in improving guided

reading, which is already a

huge strength at Heswall.

Outside learning is also pro-

moted heavily with den build-

ing, a birdwatching shelter,

outdoor classroom and more.Year six teacher Jon Lawrenson added: This

good report represents really high attainment

and achievement over a long period of time.

Wildlife Art comes alive at GordaleTHREE days of inspiring demonstrations by

award-winning artists will launch this years

National Exhibition of Wildlife Art (NEWA) at
