Day Wise Itinerary; Day 1: Fly from Delhi to Leh &

spend the daygetting acclimatised in this high altitude city.

Ladakh is a land like no other. Bounded by two of the

world’s mightiest mountain ranges, the Great Himalaya

and the Karakoram, it is a high-altitude desert located at

the western edge of the Tibetan plateau. Its awe- inspiring

landscape has been modified and sculpted into its

spectacular shape by wind and water over the millennia.

The moon-like scenery is extraordinary: stark and barren

but interspersed with isolated settlements of green oases full

of swaying poplar trees, apricot orchards and cultivated

farmland

Day 2: Brings with it more resting & a half day trip around

the city (seen in the Background) walking to the Shanti

Stupa & visiting the Lah Palace.

Day 3: Spend this day visiting the monasteries of Shey ,

Thiksey & Hemis.

Shey is the oldest capital of Ladakh from where its earliest

Tibetan kings ruled. The Monastery or Gompa of Shey is located

ideally on a high rock about 15 kms. south of Leh on the eastern

banks of the Indus river. Until the 16th century, Shey

was the royal residence. One of the attraction of the Shey is the

victory stupa which is topped with gold.

Hemis is situated around 45 kms in the south of Leh on the west

bank of the Indus river. The Hemis monastery is the biggest

monastery of Ladakh. It is not visible from the road as it is located

in a side valley. The monastery is decorated on all the four sides by

the colourful prayer flags which flutter in the breeze and send the

prayers to Lord Buddha

Day 4. Drive to Nubra valley crossing the highest motorable pass

khardongla 18300ft after lunch Visit Samstanling Yarab tso lake O/N at

Hunder or Tyager.

Day 5. Drive to Disket and Hunder visit the sanddune and DBL hump

camel and back toLeh

Early morning we will drive to Hunder. After travelling for around 39 km

from Leh we cross the Khardungla Pass (5578 m) which is the highest

motorable road in the world. The view from the top is simply amazing.

Sheltered on the other side is the beautiful and fertile Nubra valley

situated along river Shayok. The valley is covered with dense thickets

of sea buck thorn –the highest known source of Vit C. The Nubra Valley,

with an average altitude of 10000 feet has a milder climate than the

rest of Ladakh and the Shyok river which feeds this valley has made

agriculture possible. It is in this valley that you will see the double

humped Bactrian camel, which were used in earlier days as means of

transport on the Silk Route.Experience the Camel Safari on the Bactrian

camels. The Safari goes along the soft white sandy deserts with rolling

sand dunes.

long and extends from India to China. 60% of the length of the lake lies in China.

The lake is 5 km (3.1 mi) wide at its broadest point. During winter, the lake freezes

completely, despite being saline water..

HIGH ALTITUDE DO’S & DON’T’S

High altitude terrain starts above the height of 9,000ft. Typical features are a

receding tree line (which eventually disappears), extensive presence of moraine

and snow and a progressively thinning air cover. With a rarified air cover in the

atmosphere, associated with High Altitude are various levels of altitude sickness

that one encounters. To overcome the same listed are a few pointers –

*Drink lots of water (minimum 3 litres a day) You may not feel dehydrated, but

with the dry atmosphere prevalent in high altitude, the loss of moisture from your

body is hardly noticeable. Common symptoms of dehydration are dry lips, a dry

tongue and the urine changing color from light yellow to dark yellow. Should you

notice any of these, grab the nearest bottle of water and drink!

*Avoid Alcohol and Cigarettes A common thought is that drinking a few pegs of

rum (or any alcohol) will help you ease in to the night and sleep comfortably.

WRONG! Alcohol dehydrates you. Instead, before you sleep, have a glass of water. And

of course, in an atmosphere with thin air, you really want to make sure your body gets

as much oxygen as possible, so choose well between smoke and fresh air.

*Take ample rest Don’t rush, don’t run, breathe comfortably. One of the best ways to

acclimatize yourself is to take as much rest as you can and ease yourself slowly and

steadily in to the high altitude environment.
