Next Generation OmegaTek™ Productivity Technology

Next generation OmegaTek™ Productivity Technology is comprised of hardware and software innovations that significantly improve scanner performance by increasing the scanning speed and by improving the first pass read rates on hard-to-read bar codes.

The scanner is designed to render hard-to-read labels by assembling label segments into whole labels (stitching) and identifying and marking damaged or unreadable characters in one label segment and then examining other readable segments from other locations on the same label for those characters in order to reconstruct the entire label information content.

Leading Performance and First Pass Read RateSecond Generation FirstStrike Decoding5-Side Reading Technology

Benefits: Industry Leading Scanning SpeedIndustry Leading First Pass Read Rates

Performance is not based solely on the number of scan lines or lines per second, but also depends heavily upon the processing of data coming from those scan lines. The data from our pattern is processed first by our proprietary signal processing ASIC (basis of OmegaTek), which improves reading of marginal labels (more usable data per line). This improved front-end data is then passed to our industry-leading decoding algorithms, which have advanced stitching capability. Being able to stitch smaller segments together increases the angular coverage of a line, allowing each line to read more orientations of a label, and with more intact segments coming from the front-end signal processing, we have an effective one-two punch of making the most with the captured data.

•••

••

Improved Scale Features

The new Magellan 8400/8300 scale settling time (the total time from placement of the produce on the scale platter to the time the data is sent to the POS) is 550 milliseconds, which is the fastest in the industry. This reduces the time spent weighing and increases overall throughput.

The patented All-Weighs® scale platter provides optional surfaces for cashiers to place or lean produce against and assures that the full weight of the item is captured, maximizing revenue and reducing shrink.

Provides an additional option for weighing long produce and reducing shrink.Reduced scale settling time improves front-end productivity3% improvement 54% faster than other industry scalesIntegrated leveling feet for easy installation reduces costsDesigned to work with adaptive scales from multiple suppliersInherits the Magellan All-Weighs® PlatterThe All-Weighs® Scale Platter comes with either a Produce Lift Bar or a raised Produce Rail™ to add stability and accuracy when weighing long or oversized produce.

Magellan® 8400/8300 Marketing Information Guide

features BenefitsHigh Volume Retail Environment Tested Scanners

In 1974, Datalogic Scanning developed the bar code scanner that read the first bar code in a retail store. Since that time we have been dedicated to making the best scanners available for the environment.

Here is a sample of the rigorous tests that every Magellan bi-optic scanner undergoes before being branded a Magellan.

Test:

Simulated 13.6 k / 30 lb frozen turkey drop onto the scale platter from 0.3 cm / 8”. No damage is allowed. This test was developed due to lessons learned on earlier products during the Thanksgiving holiday period.

competition:

Testing of other competitors show damage to the window and surrounding frame

Test:

Liquid, such as water, wine, fabric softener spilled onto the sapphire glass surface must not penetrate and drip onto the lower window and this must not affect the scanning productivity, scale function or EAS antennas capability.

competition:

Testing of competitors show leakage of water, wine, etc onto the lower window or poor sealing allowing entrance into sensitive areas.

Test:

Drop a 5.1 cm / ” steel ball from up to 30.5 cm / 1” high onto the center of the sapphire glass window without breakage. This is to simulate dropping a large can of liquid onto the glass surface.

competition:

Competitors show fractures of the sapphire beginning at 5.1 cm / ”.

Test:

Heat tempered glass in the vertical window is tested because cashiers moving large items at 17-177.8 cm / 50-70" per second will impact the window. This glass passes UL Ball Swing Test # UL 1950 with a in. steel ball swung from 13 cm / 5” into the center of the window with no failures. This type of glass will resist scratching better than plastic, has higher impact resistance than cheaper non heat tempered glass and will not leave sharp shards of glass if broken.

competition:

Some use plastic or thinner .3 mm / .01” thick non heat tempered glass to cut cost.

features BenefitsHigh Quality Materials

Plastics used in the scanner can withstand the use of biocides used to clean scale platter surfaces that may have had biological contaminants leaked onto them. Biocides are more harmful to plastics than normal window or ammonia base cleaners.

The scanner is designed for a grocery environment where biocides are used to clean the product.

VALUE FEATURES

Patented All-Weighs® Scale Platter

Patented platter combining both horizontal and vertical weighing surfaces which helps prevent weighed produce from touching non-weighing surfaces and therefore reducing the reported weight of the item

Benefits:

Reduction of produce shrink by 1% - 3% of weighed produce

Faster Transaction Times

••

Smaller window without sacrificing performance

Reduced horizontal glass size

Benefits: Reduces costs, adds rigidity and fosters a precise targeted scan zone without sacrificing performance

Note: While the scan window size has been reduced the scan volume has actually remained the same from the previous Magellan 8100/800 scanners.

Sapphire glass or DLC glass options

Sapphire and Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) window options

Sapphire glass - guaranteed for the life of the scanner

DLC glass - guaranteed for 6 years

Sapphire glass is provided in the scanner horizontal window and is guaranteed to the original owner not to scratch or break for the life of scanner. Datalogic also offers diamond like carbon optical surfaces.

For sapphire glass models the horizontal window has a .0" +/- .005 thick piece of sapphire crystal laminated to it with a very thin layer of optical quality adhesive. The sapphire is laminated to a .38 mm / .015” thick piece of heat treated safety glass.

Sapphire is the hardest element known except for a diamond. This means that nothing in retail checkout environment can scratch it. The performance of the scanner will not degrade over time due to window scratching or hazing. In addition, the horizontal sapphire window is guaranteed for the life of the product.

The vertical window is 3.18 mm / .15” thick heat-treated, automobile safety glass. Datalogic selected this more expensive glass because of the safety concerns with standard .84 mm / .11” thick plate glass that will break into sharp shards with much less impact than safety glass.

Note: Datalogic recently viewed 14 Magellan scanners that have been in continuous service for 11 years in a high volume grocery store and all sapphire glass was in perfect condition.

New 5 line scan pattern for maximum coverage

The Magellan 8400 generates 8 scan lines in the horizontal plane and 4 in the vertical plane for a total of 5 scan lines. With a 6000 rpm motor the system generates 500 scan lines per second using the industry standard method of calculating scan lines per second (scan lines x motor speed/ 60 seconds). Others will claim virtual scan lines per second. If this unique method of calculation is used then the scan lines per second for the Magellan 8400 are 10,400 scan lines per second.

The system has two separate full-time video processing channels providing 100% coverage at all times. This design provides for cashier speeds of up to 100 inches per second without adding additional motors or higher motor speeds that increase failure rates.

Being able to stitch smaller segments together increases the angular coverage of a line, allowing each line to read more orientations of a label, and with more intact segments coming from the front-end signal processing, we have an effective one-two punch of making the most with the captured data.

Single motor design increases reliability

While exceeding the performance of other scanners, this design also reduces failures due to its lower speed and reduced power consumption.

magellan 8400 and magellan 8300 Scanning PerformanceThe Magellan brand is synonymous with scanning performance and the Magellan 8400 and 8300 inherit Datalogic Scanning's experience, gained over thirty-five years, in developing bar code scanners for the highest volume retail checkout environments in the world.

Using an innovative new design, the Magellan 8400 and 8300 scanners are able to use the same low speed motors used in the previous generation Magellan 8100/800 but at the same time increase the density and performance of the scan pattern. The Magellan 8400/8300 are also able to use a newer and smaller scan window which helps to ergonomically target scans. Even though the scan window is smaller, the scan volume (the effective area where bar codes are read) is the same size as the previous Magellan generation products.

Still another advantage of the smaller window is that there is more rigid sub-platter which creates a much more rigid scale system. This greatly reduces the scale settling time. In fact, the new Magellan 8400 and 8300 are on par with the lowest settling time of any scanner scale currently available. See the following chart of scale settling times:

Competitive products, such as the Metrologic Stratos, use multiple high-speed (10,000 rpm) motors to generate more scan lines. By using multiple motors, additional points of failure are added to the design. In addition, higher speed motors are more likely to fail.

Performance is not based solely on the number of scan lines or lines per second, but also depends heavily upon the processing of data coming from those scan lines as you can see from the scanning performance test results below.

Based on Datalogic testing using a group of experienced cashiers (experienced with multiple brands of scanners) on multiple side by side checker tests in checkstand applications the following data shows that the Magellan 8400 and Magellan 8300 outperform the Metrologic scanner. The charts illustrate average scan times based on testing scan times for a large basket of typical grocery items (market basket). Smaller numbers are faster (better).

Technical SupportDatalogic Scanning offers Technical Support for the Magellan 8400 and Magellan 8300 products to its customers worldwide via phone, email, web and in-person as required. Datalogic Scanning sponsors a three-level support strategy, offering ever increasing levels of specific expertise through the call process with specific Service Level Agreements, escalation paths and response times associated with the Urgency and Impact of any given issue.

Trouble ticket numbers are used to track all calls via our incident management system. Each call proceeds from initial Triage/Entitlement Operators to progressive levels of expertise as required through the escalation process. At each stage of the escalation, the incident receives an incident owner to provide consistency in the customer interface.

Problem escalation ProcessTier 1: An issue typically regarding set up or operation that is usually resolved in 3-5 minutes. Does not require a significant level of product knowledge depth to resolve. When it is necessary to return hardware to Datalogic Scanning for maintenance service, Datalogic Scanning’s Tier 1 support group collects information from the user and will issue a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number. The RMA number is used by Datalogic Scanning to track the entire material return and maintenance process. Users can use the RMA number to access information about the status material returned for repair through Datalogic Scanning’s secure extranet web site.

Tier : May include advanced product features that require a fair level of product knowledge depth. Generally not limited to the product but may include other system components within the customer’s business process. Issues are typically resolved within 7 hours.

frequently asked QuestionsQ: When will these exciting new products be available?A: General Availability is currently scheduled for July, 007.

Q: What new hardware is used in this latest generation scanner?A: The design employs an Analog Devices pre-processor running at 400 MHz and an Advanced Micro Devices ARM 7 micro-

processor to maximize data analysis and speed.

Q: in a few words, how would you describe these new bi-optic scanners?A: These scanners were designed to maximize productivity when scanning or weighing while reducing part count to

improve reliability, minimize power consumption to improve TCO and provide for optional scale, an EAS antenna and more.

Q: What are the key features of this new product?A: There are many and you can get educated by reviewing the sales presentation. But here are the key messages that we

want to convey.

These new bi-optic scanners represent the latest technology from Datalogic and are designed and built with the same quality and reliability of all Datalogic Magellan scanners. The scanning performance of these scanners is equivalent to their predecessors on standard bar codes and much better on hard to read and high density bar codes. This will allow us to maintain a leadership position in throughput. In addition to the patented All-Weighs® scale platter the new 8300/8400 has reduced the scale settling time from 980ms to 550ms, an astounding 44% reduction! This will also improve throughput times at the point of sale.Continuing our leadership in managing power consumption, the 8300/8400 scanners only consume an average of 7 Watts of power while scanning. This is reduces the TCO and is better for the environment.

Q: Does the smaller horizontal window mean a smaller scan volume?A: Despite a smaller window, due to its new design, the Magellan 8400/8300 has the same scan volume as the very

successful Magellan 8100/800. In addition, because the scan pattern within this volume is denser, the new Magellan 8400/8300 scanners read poor quality bar code labels even better than before which means a better first-pass-read-rate and better overall performance.

Q: There is a lot of empty space around the new compact scan engine, why is that?A: Today’s Point of Sale scanners need to accommodate increasingly more integrated data capture equipment. The scanner

is designed to allow room for scales, an EAS antenna and in the near future, an RFID antenna and more. This space also provides for liquid and debris to pass cleanly past the scanner.

Q: Will the new products fit into existing openings for older Datalogic and other scanners?A: Yes, these products are available in the same dimensions, small, medium and large as the previous products and fit into

standard holes such as the 11.5” W x 0” L opening.

Q: How do these new products compare to the older products?A: See the following chart for a direct comparison.
