WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW 2009-2010 • THE SALEM NEWS

It would only be natural for the Beverly High boys track team to be a little jealous of all the attention the Panther girls get. After all, the girls team hasn’t lost a track meet in five years and dominantes the Northeastern Conference year after year.

But that’s simply not the case. There’s a close relationship between the two Panther teams, in part because of a very close relationship between coaches Dave Jellerson of the girls’ team and Nelson Desilvestre of the boys’ squad.

They have developed a sys-tem that works well for both Orange-and-Black clubs. Jeller-son concentrates on the dis-tance teams for both boys and girls during the winter season, while Desilvestre takes charge of the sprinters and assistant Chandler Jones works with hur-dlers and throwers.

“We love the way it works out because we’re able to take the teams and divide them into three groups,” said Desilvestre, now in his 16th year as head coach. “Dave’s strength is dis-tances, while I was a sprinter and jumper. We work toward our strengths and are able to give more individual attention that way.

“The recognition the girls get is great, and I am proud that Beverly has such a strong reputation in our league and beyond. I’m always happy to see either Beverly team win. I don’t care whether it’s the boys or girls; the important thing is for the kids and the city to be recognized.”

Jellerson’s girls were 7-0 last winter to win their fourth straight indoor league champi-onship. The Beverly boys were right behind at 6-1, with the only loss to unbeaten Peabody.

“Nelson and I have been work-ing together for a long time and

we support each other,” said Jellerson, who had Desilvestre as an assistant coach before he got the boys varsity job. “Divid-ing responsibilities is very help-ful. Our girls always root for the boys to win, and they cheer us on. It’s a nice relationship.”

Seniors Kipp Standley (dis-tance) and Ryan Flannery (sprints, high jump) are the

Panther boys’ co-captains. Other key returnees are junior George Louis (sprints, jumps), senior Randy Jones (sprints, jumps), senior Tom Lang (middle distance), senior Tom Benton (dis-tance), senior Erich O’Neil (distance); and junior Scott O’Neil (distance).

Desilvestre thinks Louis will

have a breakout year. He was unbeaten during the regular season in the 55 meter dash, and set a new school sophomore record. “He has the ability to do well at the state level, not only in the dash but jumps,” said Desilvestre.

Louis said the indoor track teams get along very well. Last year his sister Janelle was one of the senior leaders for the girls.

“We’re one big happy fam-ily with a great deal of mutual respect for each other,” Louis

said. “With the construction going on while they are finish-ing the new high school, it gets very crowded in the gym. We’re crammed in with the basketball teams and cheerleaders, so it’s tough on everybody. It really helps that we’re all friends. So many kids do both indoor and outdoor track everybody gets to know each other well.

“I really like the way the coaches work together. Coach Desilvestre helps all the sprint-ers, and I think we will be really solid there this season.”

WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW 2009-2010 • THE SALEM NEWS

Salem High girls basketball coach John Fortunato is careful with his words when he talks about the Witches’ outlook this season.

There’s a hint of optimism behind For-tunato’s mes-sage, but he’s been around the game long enough to know that youth is an unpredictable.

The Witches return two talented start-ers in juniors

Jasmine Bryant and Amanda Wilkins. Otherwise, there isn’t much senior experience on a team that posted a 15-6 record a year ago.

“We’re very young, but the girls are working hard,” Fortu-nato said. “It’s hard to tell how good we’ll be at this point in the season in relation to every-one else (in the Northeastern Conference).”

What Fortunato does know is that he’s building his team on a solid foundation in Bry-ant and Wilkins. Bryant is a 6-foot center who is extremely athletic, while Wilkins is a 5-7 forward that makes scoring her specialty.

“Jasmine’s athleticism for her size is outstanding,” Fortunato said. “She moves extremely well and is versatile. We’re hoping she’s going to be a leader for us on the floor.”

Wilkins, meanwhile, was Salem’s leading scorer last winter.

“She was last year’s MVP of our team,” Fortunato said. “She led our team in scoring and just

plays much bigger than her height. I think in the frontcourt we’ll be very solid because she’s more of an inside presence for us.”

Senior captains Stephania Garcia and Lindsay Trammell saw limited time last year, but Fortunato hopes they will play a much more prominent role this season.

Garcia is a 5-4 guard who was just rounding back into basket-ball shape last year after tear-ing her ACL as a sophomore. She only got minutes here and there, backing up a solid group of guards for the Witches.

Fortunato expects Trammell, a 5-7 forward, to contributed on both ends of the floor.

“Stephania’s junior year was tough for her, but she is some-body who hung in there and worked hard in the offseason to try to get her leg right. Now, she’s a year out from that and has made some tremendous strides,” Fortunato said.

“Lindsay is just all hard work. She works at both ends of the court and does whatever she is asked to do. She’s really going to be a great captain and will do very well for us this year.”

WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW 2009-2010 • THE SALEM NEWS

At the dawn of Year 4 as a var-sity girls ice hockey program, Peabody High doesn’t so much seem to be at a crossroads as it does a stop sign.

The Tanners didn’t win a single game last year — and the majority of those contests weren’t by scores they’re inter-ested in reliving, either.

Progress, says Peabody head coach Larry Minehan, is com-ing. It’s time for Peabody to start moving forward again.

“We’re looking to improve, and to me improving means cut-ting our goals against. We want to add some goals for and make sure we’re not out of the game in the first 15 minutes. Let’s stay in these games,” said Mine-han, who has coached Tanners since the program’s inception and brings extensive experience from the North Shore Vipers girls hockey organization to the table.

Leadership is a team strength as the Tanners return all three of last year’s captains: Mariah Wentworth, Kayleigh Papa and Shannon Silvia. They’re the only seniors on the club and are looking to set the tone for a group that includes 12 juniors and six underclassmen.

Minehan, who coached with-out an assistant last year, has brought Stephanie Mitchell back and Sara Mahoney, a Lynn native who played at UConn, is also on board. Trainer Jess Judge (who played at Northeast-ern) and Lee-J Marisolo (a Bos-ton College product) are also going to work with the team one night a week.

“These are people that really wanted to get back involved; it allows me to be more of a head coach and make sure things are running as they should,” said Minehan. “I’m really excited about this year.”

The goaltending tandem of senior Brittany Costa and junior Kristin Tobin (who Minehan

said worked tirelessly hon-ing her skills in the summer) should benefit from sessions

with former UMass-Boston goalie Shannon Palmer.

Sophomore Becky Holmes is

a solid returning player, while Jessica Bourque and Alyssa Gaudet should also contribute.

Lindsay Konovalchuk also brings back some experience.

One thing that stands out about the Tanners is that their entire 21-player roster is filled with kids from the Tanner City; most area girls hockey programs have a co-operative agreement with other schools. There was some interest from other schools to come on board, but the num-ber of Peabody girls interested in the program filled the roster — surely a good sign for the future.

“These girls love the sport and they want to play. There’s been a lot of interest in the city even though we had a really tough year,” said Minehan. “Kids keep coming back.”

Peabody’s schedule is high-lighted by a trip to Martha’s Vineyard and includes foes like Cambridge and Algon-quin as well as old rivals like Marblehead, Masconomet and Beverly.

What the Tanners are looking for, quite simply, is growth.

“We’ll have a better season; we won’t have 178 or 188 goals against,” Minehan said. “To me, that’s improvement.”

WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW 2009-2010 • THE SALEM NEWS

There will be a lot of new faces on the Danvers High swim team this season.

A year removed from a fine 6-2 campaign, the Falcons welcome 18 freshmen swim-mers into the pool this time around. Veteran coach Barbara Damon feels that the team’s upperclassmen leadership, combined with the determined yet open-minded attitude of the newcomers, will spell success for Danvers.

“It’s tough because you only

get one hour (in the pool) each day and there’s lot we’re teach-ing them,” explained Damon. “But (the freshmen) are a very receptive group and they work extremely hard.”

The Danvers 12th graders lead by example both in and out of the pool; three of the four senior class officers for Danvers High are members of Damon’s squad. Along with being terrific swimmers, captain Mohamad Najia is the class president, Rebecca Leslie is the treasurer and Stephanie Costa is the class secretary.

“These are very dynamic kids

who are not just limited to a sport,” noted Damon. They’re invlolved in other activities in school. They have a purpose. And it shows because they there is very good communica-tion between the captains and the coaches.”

Captains Maura Wilson and Najia are both strong swimmers who can offer the incoming freshmen a lesson in time man-agement. Both have balanced tough academic and extracur-ricular activities with working hard at improving in the water.

“(Wilson and Najia) are stu-dents first and foremost, and

they know what time manage-ment means,” said Damon. “Good swimmers have to spend some time and significant yard-age in the pool each day; we can only teach so much in the time we have with them. Swimming is not just something you do; you have to make a commit-ment and it takes a tremendous amount of mental and phyical discipline.”

Junior Graham Beck, a master of the breaststroke, is looking like one of the top swim-mers in the North Shore this season. Damon believes Beck is a natural swimmer who has

always been comfortable in the pool.

“Some kids take to the water,” explained Damon. “There’s an element about it, and it takes a certain type of kid to have success. Graham has an unorthodox breaststroke, but it works for him. We don’t try to change it because it works for him. If you attempt to change it, you could really get him off rhythm.”

The Falcons’ quest for the Northeastern Conference title begins on Monday when they travel to Lynn to swim against the Classical Rams.

WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW 2009-2010 • THE SALEM NEWS

When Kristian Hanson talks to his players about the special privilege it is to pull on a St. John’s Prep hockey sweater, he’s not just picking something out of the High School Coaches’ Big Book of Cliches.

He has firsthand knowledge of the pride, passion and honor that comes with tugging the navy blue and white uniform on and playing for the Eagles; after all, he’s still the program’s second-leading all-time scorer.

“I have extremely high expectations for the kids when it comes to wearing that ‘SJP’ sweater proudly,” said the third-year varsity hockey coach. “I’m a Prep alumnus who played here and know how special it was to me; now it’s up to me to maintain that legacy.

“It’s about keeping the kids believing that it is special to make this team, and that if you do, you need to continue to strive to get better and do whatever you can to help the team win.”

Great expectations come for any player who dons the Prep colors, especially playing for an ice hockey program that boasts a long litany of super-star players and tremendous teams. So naturally, there is no mistaking what the team’s goals are.

“As a coaching staff, we go in every year expecting to win. If we don’t, it’s a disappoint-ing season,” said Hanson, a 33-year-old police officer in Salem. “It’s our goal to make the Super 8 state tournament (where the top public and paro-chial teams in Massachusetts are chosen to participate in a double-elimination tourna-ment) and strive to win the state title.”

A year removed from mak-ing the postseason after a slow start — but not as a Super 8 participant — the Eagles hope

to be better positioned to do so this winter. A more matured, experienced club will hit the ice this winter looking to use an always-killer regular season schedule as a springboard to postseason success.

The offense, which will need to make the most of the goals they do score, will be led by dynamic junior center Colin Blackwell, a crafty speedster who will almost certainly be given special attention by opposing defenses in every game St. John’s plays.

Sophomore center Sam Kurker could be ready to step up his game offensively, while junior right wingers Jon Farrow and Derek Salem (of Salem), junior left wing Andrew Pierce and senior wingers Kyle Linehan and Greg Tremblay are all expected to make more of a contribution this winter.

Sophomore David Letarte returns in goal after post-ing a miniscule 1.86 goals-against average and .928 save percentage in 17 games as a freshman, beating both Read-ing and Andover in the state tournament.

Captain Pete Cahill of Bev-erly leads a defense that also includes senior Kevin Davis, hulking 6-foot-4 sophomore Nick Pandelena and junior Joe Curry of Hamilton.

“We need guys to step their game up and constantly keep working to make themselves and the team better,” said Hanson.

Eagles hockey team wants to soar to great heights

MATTHEW VIGLIANTI/Staff photoSince taking over the program three years ago, former St. John’s Prep hockey star Kristian Hanson has demanded that his players continually work to improve their individual games for the good of the overall team.

Great expectations come for any player

there is no mistaking what the team’s

After leading the Eagles in scoring as a sophomore center, captain Colin Blackwell is hoping to ramp his game up another several notches this winter.

THE SALEM NEWS • WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW 2009-2010

North Shore Tech boys basketball coach Jody Norton understands strength of schedule and how important it can be to the development of a team.

He also realizes that you have to have talent to make it work.

Norton is going out on a limb with the Bulldogs this season because he feels it’s the right time. His team is coming off an 11-11 campaign in which it won a state tourney game for the first time since the 1980s, and he’s got perhaps the most dangerous two-way weapon on the North Shore in 6-foot-5 Jordan Smith. The junior center averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds and 7.8 blocked shots last winter.

Smith has some capable veterans behind him in Juan Juan (6-2 power for-ward from Salem), Jordan Castillo (5-11 point guard from Salem), Derrick Frazier (6-2 forward from Beverly) and Pat Wood (6-foot junior shooting guard), so if there was ever a time to beef up the schedule, this is it.

For the first time, North Shore Tech will play in the Peabody Christmas tour-ney (Dec. 28-29). The Bulldogs, a Divi-sion 4 team, will play Division 1 Peabody in the opening round. Somerville and Marblehead are the other two teams in the field. North Shore Tech has also retained Rockport, a team it lost to last season.

“We want to test ourselves to see how we fit in against these teams,” said Nor-ton. “We want to play more teams from the North Shore, and the Peabody tour-ney will really be a big challenge.”

The Bulldogs have qualified for the state tourney five of the last six years, but it didn’t get that breakthrough post-season win until last season when it ousted Maimonides in Division 4 North. Norton’s team bowed out in the next round to Winthrop, which went on to win the North sectional title.

“This is the way I look at it,” said the second-year head coach. “Every year, can we take another step? The next step for our confidence would be to win the (Com-monwealth Athletic Conference Small) championship after finishing second to Northeast the last two seasons.

“My goal is for us to compete at the highest level possible. I don’t care what

division or what conference we have to play, but the idea is to get better. We feel really honored to be invited to play in the Peabody Christmas tourney. We’ll be out there to win.”

They must get accustomed to playing without the graduated Ryan Mahan, a three-time conference all-star (and CAC MVP last season) who scored just under 1,000 points in his career. But Smith, who finished with seven triple-doubles last season, will be a migraine-type headache for many opposing teams.

“Jordan has the athleticism, so for him it’s a matter of focus,” said Norton. “When he’s in the right place defensively, not leaving his feet unnecessarily and staying out of foul trouble, he’s incredibly effective. Offensively, he’s a tremendous

rebounder who gets a lot of points on put-backs. If we can keep him healthy, he’ll be a big problem for opposing teams all year.”

Juan is the team’s verbal communica-tor on defense, and point guard Castillo is entering his second season as a starter. Frazier is a hard-nosed defender who has a good mid-range game on offense and Wood, who matured during the football season, is capable of exploding on offense from time to time. Norton also expects to get help from 6-2 senior Scott Blanchette, who missed his junior year with a torn ACL suffered in football.
