Camp Chief Hector YMCA │Summer Camp Higher Ground Staff June 27 to August 29, 2009

Job Duties and Description Higher ground staff work with campers of all ages and ability levels. With the assistance of counsellors, higher ground staff provide campers with a safe, challenging, and fun experience at our climbing towers and high challenge course elements. It is important for higher ground staff to be constantly aware of and taking the proper safety precautions necessary in these program areas. Higher ground staff must be committed to consciously managing the risks and making sure counselling staff are also using the proper procedures. Combined with our precamp training, these skills will ensure that a positive experience is had by all. Higher ground staff are positive role models who are actively involved in facilitating a positive, engaging camp experience for campers of all ages. While the delivery of the higher ground program and the care of the equipment are the main focus of higher ground staff, these leaders are an integral part of the camp community and they are often found helping out in many other diverse ways. All Camp Chief Hector YMCA staff, regardless of their specific duties, are also hired as counsellors. When there is a need to support our staff team by filling a different role, each staff member agrees to confidently join a group and lead in-camp and outtripping activities, and take on the responsibilities of a counsellor. Each resource staff will likely have an opportunity to fulfill this expectation. Staff may sometimes counsel in different sections, based on their skills and the needs of the camp.

Situation

• The Camp Chief Hector YMCA – Summer Camp is a summer camp for children and youth and their families

• Counsellors work in pairs, residing in tipis or cabins with eight campers • Resource staff live together in tipis • Meals are taken family-style at a tipi group's table in Bowfort or Hector Lodge
