View from Hornsey Lane

A well equipped home to suit every need The Highgate, originally a convent, is situated in an exclusive residential area on the edge of Highgate village, perfect for exploring the capital and has the advantage of being close to shops and transport.

The home has high quality facilities, including large landscaped gardens, a vegetable garden and a car park.

All the rooms are well furnished and there are four lounges where residents like to watch television, relax, chat or entertain visitors. The sunny dining room and conservatory offers lovely garden views. For brighter days there’s a furnished patio with a shaded area.

We provide a variety of long-term general nursing, residential and convalescence care. We also offer respite, palliative care and nursing care for over 18 year olds with physical disabilities.

Fitzwarren House, within the same grounds, offers a number of Bupa Assisted Living properties, which provide privacy and independence, with the reassurance of help and company close to hand from the nursing home.

We believe that residents should be cared for with dignity and respect. Our aim is to provide them with the highest standards of care and service at all times.

INDIVIDUAL CARE THAT MEETS YOUR NEEDS

Always a warm welcomeAt The Highgate, we want residents to feel at home with us whether their stay is long or short. So we keep rules and regulations to a minimum and aim to create a friendly, caring environment. We know it ’s very important to strike a balance between providing care when it’s needed and helping the resident to be as independent as possible.

The Highgate maintains the highest standards of care and hygiene, so all the rooms are cleaned daily and there’s an on-site laundry where all the residents’ clothes are washed and ironed.

We believe in creating a comfortable and homely environment with the reassurance of fully trained specialist nurses and care staff on hand day and night. All bedrooms have a 24-hour call system along with telephone points and smoke detectors. Our homes are designed to encourage mobility in a safe and supportive environment.

Valuing individuality At The Highgate, we talk to residents and families about individual likes and dislikes, habits and feelings. On this basis we create a tailor made personal care plan, along with a key carer or named nurse for every resident. We take the time to listen, which means we’re better able to meet residents emotional and physical needs.

Care based on understandingWe operate a unique care documentation system called Quest. This assesses all our residents’ health needs and personal preferences. It reflects the person’s life experiences, their likes, dislikes, and choices. We gather all the relevant information from health and social care professionals as well as family and friends, and we encourage them to participate in their ongoing care.

At The Highgate we provide a wide range of long and short-term care. We offer frail elderly nursing care 24 hours a day, supported by a team of qualified registered nurses.

We believe in the importance of flexible care, with both respite and convalescence care available, to provide support for residents recovering from an i l lness or operation. The Highgate also provides palliative care and a full holistic package is available, offering practical and emotional support with fully trained specialist nurses and carers on hand.

This home also offers nursing care for over 18 year olds with physical disabilities.

Get involvedAt The Highgate we actively welcome feedback as it allows us to provide the right care for every individual. We appreciate that while we provide round the clock care, there will always be need for friends and family to be around. We encourage you to be involved with any part of your loved ones’ everyday life, including social activities, and local community events. You’ll always have a choice of places to spend time with your friends and family and we make sure you have the privacy you need.

Gardens that appeal to all the senses At The Highgate we have created a beautiful sensory garden. This unique project is run in conjunction with the national disability charity Thrive. Our sensory garden is designed to appeal to all the senses through the use of colour, texture, smell and sound. We grow perennials, sweet-smelling roses, fragrant grasses and aromatic herbs.

Many of our residents really enjoy helping with the gardening and the vegetable plots, and when it’s sunny, they can relax on the patio overlooking the beautiful grounds.

Very much part of the community There’s plenty for our residents to enjoy at The Highgate including gardening clubs, craft sessions and coffee mornings. Residents are encouraged to pursue their own hobbies and interests or maybe try something new.

Local entertainers drop by regularly to put on a show, and we visit Hampstead Heath, London’s galleries and museums, or the coast in the summer. The on-site and visiting mobile library provide a selection of books and we enjoy links with St Joseph’s Church, the local synagogue, the Highgate Society and the adjoining assisted living properties.

Remembering and appreciating the pastThe Map of Life is a unique way to help us get to know a resident’s background and history. It illustrates what they’ve done and where they’ve been in a simple, interesting way. It also acts as a reminder for the resident of past times, and a guide to their interests and routine now.

KEEPING RELATIVES INVOLVED

Something to enjoy every day At B upa we know that popular activ it ies and stimulating interactions are a vital part of good nursing care. It can also be a good opportunity for friends and family to spend time with residents. Having something interesting going on every day is very important for a resident’s general well being as it helps to keep their minds active, and improves their appetite.

Friends and family are welcome to participate in any or all of the activities at any time. Why not come and get involved in one of our monthly seasonally themed events? We’ve found our table gardening, yoga, dance and drama activities are particularly popular with our residents.

Carefully chosen menus Mealtimes are an important part of our residents’ day. Our experienced chef creates balanced and nutritious homemade meals using the freshest ingredients. Soon after residents arrive, a member of our catering team meets with them to discuss their personal food preferences or specific dietary needs. There’s lots of variety and options available, whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner, and all our menus are assessed for nutritional value.

Residents can eat in their room if they prefer, or join others in the dining room, and friends and relatives are always welcome to come along. Every day we show what’s on offer at every meal in large clear type on display boards in the dining room.

For residents who get hungry outside normal kitchen hours, we provide a Night Bite menu that’s available between 6.30pm and 6.30am. This offers a range of snacks including fruit, sandwiches, cereals, yoghurts and hot or cold drinks. We frequently serve homemade cakes with tea or coffee in the afternoon.

Tailored requirementsAt The Highgate we know just how important it is that each resident’s dietary needs are catered for. Whether it be concerns over weight gain or loss, cholesterol or food intolerances, we make sure menus are tailored to meet these needs whilst always being enjoyable and tasty. And, if a resident has difficulty chewing or swallowing, we prepare enriched or modified textured food to suit them.

Bupa care — for everyoneThere are over 300 Bupa care homes in the UK and you don’t need to have Bupa health insurance to benefit from the high standards of care and comfort that each of our homes offer. In fact, over two-thirds of our residents receive some level of funding assistance.

We conduct an independent customer satisfaction survey. This helps us to retain and improve standards in areas such as the level and type of care, activities, food and accommodation. Bupa has the highest number of highly rated Care Homes in England by the Care Quality Commission.

Specialist training All our homes are run by experienced managers and teams of qualified nurses and carers. We take training very seriously and our carers have the highest NVQ achievement rate in the care sector.

Because we know our customers prefer a personalised service we have a unique Bupa Care Homes’ staff initiative called ‘Personal Best’. It helps carers to understand how important it is to meet the needs and preferences, to achieve our aim of ensuring that every resident continues their daily lives with privacy and dignity in a safe, caring environment.

We also run specific training programmes for staff who care for people with dementia in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Sunderland University.

We appreciate that every person living with us is unique, with their own likes, dislikes, ways and habits.

Training and supporting our staffBupa is proud to be one of the UK’s largest organisations to gain the prestigious government backed Investor In People (IIP) award.

Help and advice on planning and financing careEvery resident is different as are his or her needs. So, our fees vary depending on the length of stay and the type of care required. Prices cover single private rooms with 24-hour care, all meals and laundry. The home manager can give you full details of the terms and costs of a resident’s stay. There are additional charges such as chiropody, physiotherapy, hairdressing, occupational therapy, aromatherapy and speech therapy.

How much you need to contribute to the overall cost will depend on the type of care needed, and the amount of capital available. And remember, you don’t need to have Bupa Health Insurance to be a Bupa care home resident.
