SHITO HIAN KATA

Shito Hian Kata is the first basic kata that is taught in the Highland Wado-Kai system. It is a foreign kata

that I maintain from the Shito-Ryu system where I attained my Shodan level. The kata introduces Sanchin

breathing and is a very soft to hard technique kata. This Sensei has used the kata from Kyu level and still uses it

in his training of the Martial Arts. This kata introduces techniques that allows the karateka to be able to absorb

any blow from an attacker through breathing and kiai technique.

Hian kata teaches one to go from hard technique to soft fast technique, giving good muscular control of one's

body. The kata introduces us to a deep forward stance for leg development and for good balance control. The

kata also introduces the use of double technique to help in body co-ordination.

Shito Hian Kata introduces:

Attention Open Foot Stance - Musubi dachi

Natural Stance - Shizen hontai

Straddle Stance - Kiba-dachi

Double Blocking -Morote Uke

Forward Stance - Zenkutsu-dachi

Double Punching - Morote zuki

X-Block - Juji-uke

Snapping foot block - Nami ashi uke

1. In open toe attention stance (Musubi Dachi) perform standing bow (Tachi Rei) - fig. 1 & 2

2. Move to natural stance, (shizen hontai) bring the arms across in front of body and back, (closed fist), right

over left. Keep the hands in front of the body, preparation position, (Yoi).– fig. 3

both hands out to the side of the body left hand open, right hand closed. In an arc like movement swing the hands

up and over the head.—(fig 5)

4. Extend both hands fully above the head with elbows slightly bent, the left hand open palm should contact the

top of the right closed fist. - (fig 6)

5. Bring both hands downward pressing and pivoting left palm on right fist (bottom of fist is first when coming

down). Slow and hard, bring hands to stomach area.-(fig 7)

*This downward movement should be done with a slow deep breath for approximately 5 seconds.

downward blocks into play, (morote gedan bari uke).-(fig 12)

Modern Formulated Wado Kai Kata

Later on in your martial arts training, more details of Hian kata will be revealed in

breathing, muscular control, body dynamics, and jujitsu in the kata. Hian kata is an

excellent way to practice away from the dojo to keep you in shape and give excellence to

your breathing. Done properly several times in a row Hian kata is a great way to have a

workout and stay in shape.

When practicing this kata on your own be sure to watch you body movements and

stances, work for excellence and what you get from this will be most rewarding.
