This was combined with an impressive range of outcomes across the wide range of the Hippodrome’s activities. Notable achievements include the launch of Hippodrome Plus, our programme of creative learning and performance; significant operational efficiencies; increased fundraising; and national recognition of our progress in staff development.

There were 404 performances in a record-breaking year and on average, almost 86% of seats were sold for every single one.

Over half of the audience were new patrons visiting us for the first time

In a year of records, the two standout shows were Disney’s spectacular The Lion King and the National Theatre’s poignant War Horse, both of which achieved complete sell-out seasons and standing ovations at every performance. Musicals occupied nearly half of the year with Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s 25th anniversary production of The Phantom of the Opera opening the

year to capacity audiences followed by outstanding productions of Hairspray and Singin’ in the Rain. We were also pleased to join with other venues in the Music & Lyrics consortium to produce capacity runs of High Society and Fiddler on the Roof.

Over half of the audience in the year were new attendees visiting the theatre for the first time and many of them have made further bookings.

Pantomime has been a Hippodrome tradition since 1957 and goes from strength to strength, building on its reputation as the biggest and best in the land. Snow White was another record-breaking production with the highest attendance for over ten years. The build-up to the show was featured in a Channel 4 documentary as one of its stars, Gok Wan, made his pantomime debut.

Birmingham Royal Ballet enjoyed unrivalled success with their highest ever sales for The Nutcracker, the festive centre piece of a season which included popular revivals such as Coppélia, Giselle and ‘Still Life’ at the Penguin Café and also new work such as David Bintley’s The Prince of the Pagodas to Britten’s score in his centenary year. Introduction

This Performance Review reflects on an exceptional period in this great theatre’s long history. Undoubtedly the key achievement was that over 625,000 tickets were sold for shows from April 2013, the highest attendance for well over fifty years.

In dance, the return of Matthew Bourne’s now famous Swan Lake played to its largest ever audience outside London in an extended sold-out season.

Finally, we were also pleased to welcome Welsh National Opera led by Artistic Director David Pountney to their English home for three rich seasons of nine operas. This included a brand new work from Birmingham born Jonathan Harvey, with his Wagner Dream alongside a new production of Lohengrin in Wagner’s bicentenary year.

Augmenting our main stage programme, Hippodrome Plus was launched to engage with many more thousands of people in widely varied programmes encompassing learning, access, free events, outdoor performances and new productions. The number of attendances for these projects doubled to almost 70,000 and this programme has become the focus of our fundraising as detailed later in this review. Free outdoor events to attract more people to Southside and the city centre culminated in our co-ordination and production of the Four Squares Weekender. Audiences of almost 100,000 enjoyed a free weekend of spectacular outdoor arts from our fellow Birmingham Arts Partnership (BAP) organisations, timed to celebrate the opening of the spectacular new Library of Birmingham.

Many of our programmes rely on support from generous donations from individuals and organisations. This year saw increases in both corporate support and individual donations all of which enabled us to expand the range of experiences and engagement we offer, especially to young people.

Behind the scenes we have also been able to break new ground and operate the theatre as efficiently and positively as possible, with accreditation in environmental management and health & safety – the first theatre to achieve British Standards in both these crucial operational areas. We were also very pleased to be listed for the first time in the Sunday Times top 100 best not-for-profit companies to work for.Birmingham Hippodrome’s mission is to provide the best possible theatre experience for our audience and our visiting casts and companies. We would like to thank every single person who has attended and performed at Birmingham Hippodrome this year.

Finally and certainly not least, our heartfelt thanks to all the staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes to produce and deliver the shows and ensure every visit is the best it possibly can be, and to our Trustees for their support and enthusiasm. We are all enormously proud to have played a part in the Hippodrome story in such a memorable year.

We would like to thank every single person who has attended and performed at Birmingham Hippodrome this year

Beyond Birmingham Hippodrome’s main stage, Hippodrome Plus takes the best possible theatre experience to everyone.

Our Creative Programmes team delivers an ever widening range of additional projects, events and opportunities designed to enable everyone to enjoy live performance.

Our invaluable work includes touch tours, audio-described, captioned and signed performances. We work regularly with young people with learning disabilities, and this year our first relaxed performance of pantomime made a big impact. Our expanding Creative Learning projects include hundreds of school children from across the region, specially-crafted holiday workshops and an annual Young Carers initiative. Taking performance onto the streets, we strive to present the best live performances for everyone, usually for free.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE IN SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

Citizenship Project in association with Service Birmingham

Ten local primary schools enjoyed three days of drama and musical theatre exploring citizenship with a performance for family, governors and local councillors. Around 400 children benefitted from this programme.

The Firs Primary School Literacy Project, Hodge Hill

A one-week literacy project for nearly 60 children across the school, now in its fourth successful year. Drama and musical theatre help to create a unique creative approach to exploring literacy.

‘Welcome to our World’: Sacred Heart School, Handsworth, funded by Centresoft

The school’s diverse cultural and ethnic background was celebrated with stories, songs and dance from different countries. With 210 participants, this project also featured a specially made film shown at a whole school assembly.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE ACROSS THE COMMUNITY

Young Carers Workshop Week, funded by The Patrick Trust

One of the most moving moments last summer was when 30 young carers performed their own specially devised piece for their mentors, friends and families. This came at the end of a busy week of intensive drama and musical theatre workshops, plus a performance of ‘The Lion King’.

Sense Dance Programme In partnership with Sense, our new series of weekly dance workshops for 35 deaf/blind adults encouraged deep engagement making significant impact, as witnessed at the final performance.

Pantomime Relaxed Performance

Our first ‘relaxed performance’ for those on the autistic spectrum, with learning disabilities or special needs was enjoyed by nearly 800 people from special schools, care homes and community centres. Front-of-house teams had special access training, and a familiarisation film was made by a group of young people with special needs. The event was generously supported by Qdos Pantomimes, with donations from businesses, theatre patrons and trusts further enhanced through ‘The Big Give Christmas Challenge'.

OUT AND ABOUT, BRINGING ART TO EVERYONE

Summer in Southside

With Hurst Street and Inge Street closed to traffic, two weekends of free outdoor performances saw 58 different events including dance, circus, music, comedy and theatre.

‘Illuminate’ Light Weekend

Installations around Southside attracted audiences of around 11,000. ‘The Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors’ Exhibition from China of 100 larger than life size figures represented the famous terracotta soldiers; a new dance and light work was created by Birmingham based choreographer Sonia Sabri; and a ‘Body in Motion’ 360 degree panoramic cinema experience took place in an ‘Igloo’ dome.

Four Squares Weekender

Marking the opening of the new Library of Birmingham, Birmingham Arts Partnership (BAP) brought Centenary, Victoria, Oozells and Chamberlain Squares to life. Our own contribution included ‘As the World Tipped’ by Wired Aerial Theatre, a spectacular, late night aerial dance and projection event attracting nearly 6,500 people. As part of our producing role for the whole weekend, we also recruited, trained and managed a cohort of 70 volunteers many of whom will be retained for future BAP events.

As an unsubsidised charity, Birmingham Hippodrome carefully balances its artistic ambitions with sales targets at the box office. On top of this, fundraising plays an increasingly important element in the mix.

Shortly after successfully completing our Stage Appeal campaign in 2012 to replace the Hippodrome’s 30-year old platform, we turned our attention to projects intended to expand our impact with new audiences and make regular patrons think differently about what we offer.

Hippodrome Plus has become a new focus for fundraising. Grant-making trusts, individual donors and business supporters are helping us achieve our exciting ambitions. We’re proud of the work we’re already doing in schools and colleges, and in local communities across the city, but there’s so much more to do.

Businesses have supported us through our popular corporate membership schemes for years and, as the region’s economic recovery got underway, 2013/14 turned out to be a bumper year. We’re particularly well placed to deliver fundraising dinners linking an expertly crafted meal (from our own in-house catering team)

in a private hospitality space with a world-class performance. So it’s no wonder that fundraising dinners at The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King and War Horse attracted substantial support. We want to thank all our valued sponsors, everyone who bought tables, and those who dug even deeper for the popular raffles and auctions.

Birmingham Hippodrome has an enviable track-record of proving time and again how capable it is in helping to realise the shared visions of grant-making trusts. Recent Hippodrome Plus projects including the Relaxed Performance of Pantomime, the Young Carers workshops, Opera Quest and Dance Quest all attracted generous support from private trusts to whom we are extremely grateful.Record-breaking attendance during the year resulted in huge numbers of donations from ticket-buying patrons as part of their transaction. In many cases these donations were further boosted by Gift Aid, and Arts Council England’s Catalyst scheme matched many donations pound for pound - a real philanthropic incentive. Membership of our higher level Patrons scheme more than doubled during the year.

PLAYING YOUR PART AT BIRMINGHAM HIPPODROME

If you’re a theatre-lover with a passion for performance, or a business seeking a strong brand alliance, if you represent a grant-making trust with a similar progressive outlook please get in touch. You can help in so many ways for the benefit of thousands of people across the region who are yet to enjoy the transformative power of the performing arts.

Please contact me or any of my fellow Trustees through the Hippodrome’s fundraising team and let’s work together.
