It seems fitting that, as many families’ thoughts turn to a new school year the Hippodrome autumn season features a number of films and events around the theme of childhood. ‘Super 8’, a good, old-fashioned blockbuster, pays homage to the trademark invocation of the magic of childhood exemplified in much of Spielberg’s work; whilst a summer of lost innocence is at the heart of the excellent ‘Tomboy’ set during one seemingly endless school holiday of swimming, games and blether, gloriously free of any adult mediation. We pick up the theme of games with a very special archive screening of ‘The Singing Street’. I saw the film recently and, like many before me, immediately fell in love with this charming record of children’s playground songs filmed in Edinburgh in the early ‘50s. Ewan McVicar – acclaimed storyteller, songwriter, international performer and author on Scotland’s traditional song – will present this lovely film and invite you to recall some of the rhymes that still echo round playgrounds today.

Continuing in the archive vein, the recently retired curator of the Scottish Screen Archive, Janet McBain will join us at the Hippodrome to present her personal selection of films from the collection she knows so well. Janet, awarded a BAFTA in 2006 for Outstanding Achievement in Film, established the Scottish Screen Archive when the original collection was stored in a garden shed and worked tirelessly for the next 35 years to build the archive that now includes more than 32,000 films and covers 100 years of Scotland's history. Janet’s passion and enthusiasm for the archive endeavour is infectious and we are in for a real treat. Book soon!

Many of the world’s greatest film makers have championed the work of restoring our movie heritage – most notably Martin Scorsese who established the Film Foundation for this purpose and recruited the likes of Spielberg, Coppola and Kubrick. Visionary director Terrence Malick has joined their ranks to personally oversee the restoration of his own film: ‘Days of Heaven’ and the spectacular results reveal how subtle a film restoration can be. See for yourself at our Re-wind screenings which also include the new digital restorations of

‘Kind Hearts and Coronets’ and ‘The Lavender Hill Mob’. Not restored, but certainly worth a repeat viewing is the beautiful ‘Il Postino’, programmed to mark National Poetry Day. The film won an Oscar and was nominated for a further four, including Best Actor and Screenplay for the gifted Massimo Troisi who tragically died of heart failure the day after filming was completed, having postponed his surgery in order to complete the film.

At the Hippodrome we have established our own reputation for championing screenings of silent film – a moving picture style that accounts, after all, for a third of cinema’s life-span. This season we host the Closing Weekend Film of the 19th French Festival UK – a 100th anniversary screening of the second instalment in Louis Feuillade’s Fantômas silent serial, ‘Juvé contre Fantômas’ and a UK premiere of the live accompaniment performed by two cult Parisian DJs Radiomentale, ahead of its onward tour to Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and London. My advice is book early to avoid disappointment as this promises to be a truly exciting cinema experience.

There is just room for a quick mention of a couple more highlights: the mini-season of animation on tour from the London Animation Film Festival – world-class filmmaking that you won’t be able to see at the multiplex; our new strand of Youth Ambassador selections, and the acclaimed documentary about a crazy endeavour to teach a chimp language: ‘Project Nim’, with an introduction from Rachel Beattie, one of the artists featured in an exhibition of new work by graduates of the Edinburgh School of Art at the Park Gallery, 3 September to 30 October. Try this as an interesting companion piece to the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ screening in the same week. Thought-provoking stuff!

Abrams follows up his ace ‘Star Trek’ re-boot with a terrific family sci-fi adventure modelled on the best of early Spielberg (who co-produces here) and creates a well-crafted, entertaining blockbuster recalling a golden age of childhood and lost innocence. In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Inexplicable events overtake the town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth.

The Tree of Life This film follows the life journey of Jack, eldest son of a 50s family, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). One of the most talked-about films at Cannes this year and the one that has most divided critics, debating whether this is a profound masterpiece or an inscrutable family melodrama. Either way, Terrence Malick’s (‘Days of Heaven’ pg 13) new feature is entirely idiosyncratic and flooded with beautiful, almost spiritual imagery.

The Guard A clever and original take on the buddy-cop movie starring a magnificent Brendan Gleeson as vulgar, boozy and bent officer of the Galway Garda, Sgt. Fright Night Revamp of the 80s comedy horror classic with David Tennant replacing Roddy McDowell’s timid TV vampire killer who teams up with ex-geek Charley on a mission to expose the neighbour (Farrell) he suspects of being a real-life murderous blood-sucker. Rowan Atkinson reprises his role as the clueless secret agent, in a welcome sequel directed by Oliver Parker (‘St Trinian’s’). The film catches up with intelligence officer Johnny English, (who has been honing his skills in a remote region of Asia since the original in 2003) as he tries to stop a group of international assassins before they eliminate the leader of China. Frequently laugh-out-loud funny, the sequence in which Agent English lets an office chair get the better of him is priceless.

We Need to Talk About Kevin Multi-award winning Scottish director Lynn Ramsay successfully adapts the weighty novel about a woman who reluctantly sets aside her career to start a family only to find her new baby challenges her from the start. The Help An affecting drama about three very different, and extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project which seeks to record the stories of the town’s black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern white families. The Lavender Hill Mob Alec Guinness gives an Oscar nominated performance in one of British cinema’s most enduringly funny movies, as Henry Holland – an apparently mild-mannered bank clerk, who teams up with dodgy accomplice (Holloway) and cockney spivs (James and Bass) to execute the perfect gold bullion robbery. The second of three Ealing collaborations between director Crichton and writer T.E.B. Clarke, earning Clarke (‘Passport to Pimlico’) an Oscar for Best Screenplay. The film’s gently non-conforming criminals are likeable eccentrics – far less menacing than the murderous villains of Ealing’s later film ‘The Ladykillers’ – and the film is a delightful treat from beginning to end. Look closely in the opening scene for a glimpse of a 21 year-old Audrey Hepburn in one of her earliest film appearances.

The Singing Street: A Celebration of Scottish Playground Songs Sixty years ago 'The Singing Street' was ‘hoaching’ with rhyme and song, ball and skipping rope, and Edinburgh teacher 'Doc' Ritchie not only collected and put hundreds of small lyrics into his books, he and teacher colleagues made a film full of joy and delights, that has been called the best amateur documentary ever made. Sixty years on, while adults lament that children these days don't play games outdoors any more, the kids are out there having the same kind of fun they always did. The old games are replaced by new ones, the words change, but the bouncing around and surreal ideas are still there, though the play has had to move from unsafe streets to school playgrounds.

The Hippodrome presents a unique screening of ‘The Singing Street’ with acclaimed storyteller and children's lore collector Ewan McVicar who will set the scene with memories of yesteryear and some of today's remarkable playground songs.

Scotland in Auld Film

The Curator’s CutJanet McBain first took on the Scottish Screen Archive collection when it was stored in a garden shed, and worked tirelessly for the next 35 years to collect, restore, preserve and make accessible a collection that grew to more than 32,000 films covering 100 years of Scotland’s film history. Janet retired as Senior Curator in March this year and we are delighted to welcome her to the Hippodrome to present a personal selection of favourite films from the Archive, reflecting on 35 years rescuing and uncovering hidden aspects of Scottish film production. From Scotland in the Edwardian era, to sausage making in the ‘thirties, from the craftsmanship of Clydeside’s iron founders to the eccentricities of Scotland’s sporting traditions. The programme includes ‘Unveiling of Bo’ness War Memorial’ (1924), Jenny Gilbertson’s ‘Da Makkin O’ A Keshie’ (1930), Margaret Tait’s ‘John MacFadyen’ (1972) and ‘The Grand Match’ (1979).

Juvé versus Fantômas Described by film historian David Thomson as “the first great movie experience”, Louis Feuillade’s Fantômas consists of five films made between 1911 and 1914 and follows the thrilling adventures of inspector Juvé and his evil nemesis, Fantômas. In partnership with the French Film Festival UK the Hippodrome is proud to present the second part of this landmark silent film serial. The relentless pace of this proto-action thriller is breathtaking, and Feuillade’s mastery of the suspense thriller – so long before Hitchcock and others – is doubly remarkable in an age of comparatively primitive technology. The film ends with a truly brilliant cliff-hanger in the manner of the best serials of the period.

Tonight’s screening is accompanied by a live score performed by cult Parisian DJs RadioMentale. For ten years the sound-artist duo have been broadcasting their own cult-show in Paris, Switzerland and Japan, and their work includes sound pieces for galleries, clubs, films, installations, urban spaces and performance.

Concessions Concession tickets are available for children under 16 years, unemployed in receipt of benefits, full-time students, OAPs, Young Scot Card Holders and Falkirk Community Trust Leisure Card holders. Proof of concession eligibility must be shown before purchase.

Super Saver Tickets Four tickets to four films £19.00 (£14.40 concessions). All four tickets must be purchased together in advance (this offer excludes Jeely Jar Screenings, Cuppas, Baby Friendly and Special Events).

Please Note: Smoking is not permitted in the Hippodrome.

Orange Wednesdays

Orange Wednesdays give you 2 cinema tickets for the price of 1, at Wednesday screenings.

From your Orange phone: Text ‘FILM’ to 241 and Orange will send you your ticket by text (cost of text 35p); call 241 from your Orange phone; go to Orange World, select ‘Film’ then ‘Orange Wednesdays’.

Box Office and Booking Information

The Hippodrome Box Office is open Saturdays 10:15am - 2:30pm, and also opens 45 minutes before, and closes 15 minutes after the start of each screening.

There is usually no need to book, but tickets can be booked in advance during the open hours OR from the Steeple Box Office (Tel: 01324 506850), Monday to Saturday, 9:30am - 4:45pm. Telephone bookings are subject to a 50p booking fee. Reserved tickets must be paid for within 3 days, or no later than 30 minutes prior to the screening. Tickets will be released for re-sale otherwise

Refunds

Tickets will not be exchanged or money refunded after purchase except in the event of cancellation of screening/activity by Falkirk Community Trust.

Refreshments

The Hippodrome Café and Licensed Bar opens 45 minutes before each screening and closes at the start of the screening. Popcorn, ice-cream, sweets, tea, coffee and soft drinks are available from the Café. Beer, wine, and spirits are available from the Licensed Bar. Please note: Children and young people are not permitted to approach the bar. No person under the age of 18 years is permitted to purchase alcohol. Proof of age may be requested. Only food and drink purchased on the premises may be consumed.

ionHow to get to Bo’ness

By Car: Bo’ness lies on the south bank of the Firth of Forth. Travelling from the west, exit the M9 at J5 onto the A905 then take the A904 into Bo’ness. From the east, exit at J3 onto the A803 then take the A904 into Bo’ness.

By Bus: There are bus services to Bo’ness from Edinburgh, Linlithgow, Bathgate, Falkirk, Stirling, Cumbernauld and Glasgow. The services are operated by First Edinburgh. Call Traveline Scotland on 0871 200 22 33 for bus timetables or visit www.travelinescotland.com

By Train: The nearest station to Bo’ness is Linlithgow, which is served by trains from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling/Dunblane. Details of services are available from National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 or www.nationalrail.co.uk.

Parking: The Hippodrome is within easy walking distance of Bo’ness Town Centre car parks.
