Welcome to the Long Beach HistoricalNewspaper Collection at the HistoricalSociety of Long Beach (HSLB). This collection beganwhen the Press-Telegramneeded to nd a permanent

home for its bound volume newspapers (1897 1989)and its microlm (1947 present) and asked theHSLB if it had space for it. As the collection growswith each new reel of microlm, the HSLB is gladto be the steward of this unique collection long intothe future.

The collection of newspapers we receivedfrom the Press-Telegramincludes itspredecessor papers. Throughoutthe Newspaper Collection manyyears and volumes are missing. Its not surprising considering the number of owners

and location changes over the 117 years represented. The collection also includes newspapers from othersources, including theMarina Newsand the Arguswhich came to us through members of the NorthLong Beach Community Action Group.

The partnership between the HSLB and the LongBeach Navy Memorial Heritage Association has beenessential to securing and preserving the NewspaperCollection and in making it available to the public. Thanks to the LBNMHA, the Newspaper Collectionhas been inventoried, catalogued, shelved or placedin archival boxes, is accompanied by a timeline inthe gallery, and can be accessed at a workstationwith a microlm viewer that can copy articles ontoa portable drive. We are pleased to be part of mak-ing these important historical documents available

to researchers and others who are interested inknowing more about the citys history as chronicledin its newspapers.
