JANIS JOPLIN
• Born in Port Arthur, TX• Left for San Francisco to sing in a few folk clubs and
bars but then returned to Texas to attend UT. Only stayed for 1 year• Singing Characteristics: Raspy Voice, Shouted Lyrics
• Big Brother & The Holding Company• 1967 – Monterrey International Pops Festival• “Ball & Chain”
• Solo Career – 1969• “I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues”
• Full-Tilt Boogie – 1970• Pearl (1970) – Last Album • “Me & Bobby McGee” – Her only No.1 hit.
• Died of a Heroin overdose before Pearl was released. She was 27

JIM MORRISON & THE DOORS
• Started as the House Band for – Whisky A Go-Go Club in LA• Signed with Elektra Records in 1966• The Doors (1967)• “Light My Fire” –
• Musical Style:• Blues-Based Rock• Narrow ranged Vocal lines• Use of Minor Keys to create dark sound• Lyrics based on Death, Violence, Darkness
• “LA Woman”
• Morrison plagued by addiction to alcohol and drugs• Suffered several legal and physical problems and
moved to Paris to recuperate• Died on July 3, 1971 from a heart attack• Buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris
THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE
• Not remembered for his singing• His only Top 40 hit – “All Along the Watchtower”
• One of the most influential figures in post-1968 Rock Guitar Styles.• Began his career by playing backup guitar for:• Little Richard• Ike & Tina Turner• Wilson Picket
• Hendrix traveled to England in 1966 and recruited Noel Redding (bass) and Mitch Mitchell (drums) –formed “The Experience”• Scored several hits on the British charts:• “Purple Haze”
• Had his American Debut at The Monterrey Pop Festival of 1967
• Electric Ladyland (1968)• Several highly experimental works• Tape manipulation• Several songs are begun on one side and returned to on
the other side.• Jimi Hendrix died of a Barbiturate Overdose
