The movements of the Gu£rdsmen were closely watched by .many of the strikers, but no overtac~were Pttempted. That .night the streets ere patrolled by the soldiers~tn every person was closely scur~

tinized and questioned regarding his business abroad after night fall. Adjutant-General J'. B. Lauck 2t once established a censorship over all messages which were sent out over the wire , but this as speedily taken off upon the protests of the newspaper corres.ondents. The General explained the reason for the censorship, by

declarLTl.g that an erz·oneous report to the effect that the to111n was under martial law had been sent out and he wished to orevent such misstatements. J..he tov.n was not as yet under martial-law and would not be unless Sheriff Charles F. Howard declared hi_s inability to contrOl the situation and requested General Lauck to take charge. The soldiers were merely there accor-ding to the Sheri:...!') to assist him and his deputies in maintaining order and preservinb the peace.*

By J\.Ule eighth*many of. the Italian striker·s had drawn their money from the companys bank and left the camp. A very few intended to

emain at the old wage schedule. Two hundr-ed and ninty men owning cabins ·were paid for their labor on th~ buildings, and a committee

as appointed to app1·aise their value. President Queale of the cCloud River Lumber Compeny, said the cabins would be torn dovm s the company did no intend to employ Italians again.** On th~

night of Jtme eighth Sheriff Howard notifi.ed General Lauck he ould no longer need the soldiers, und the following morning Troop
