DESCRIPTION

A tragic story about the making mistakes in life and trying to move forward from them. Two police officers discover an underground office for the London Board for Internal Executions; a former committee for assassinations in London. Upon going through records, they discover the file of a man responsible for the murders of 1888 in Whitechapel and the genuine reason behind them. The story is based loosely on the Jack The Ripper stories, but takes away from what we know and tries to answer the questions that remain unanswered. Inspired by theories of Ripperologists, the story combines a number of theories with a theory of my own.

The present day. An office in London with eight desks. They all appear to have been left tidily, as if the previous occupants were in no hurry to leave. The room looks as though it has been untouched for quite a while.

    +Enter Josh & Fredrick

    JOSHHere it is.

FREDRICKWell, you werent joking when you said it hadnt been used in quite a while.

JOSHIts been over a hundred years.

FREDRICKHow did we not know it was here?

JOSHThe builders discovered it when they were trying to re-tarmac some of the road, when they stumbled across it. One of the builders fell in and sustained minor injuries.

FREDRICKThis is just incredible. Makes you wonder why they would want to put something like this underneath such sketchy grounds.

JOSHI thought itd be idyllic to put it next to the travel hub.

FREDRICKAnyway, why did you bring me here?

JOSHSir, look at what was on the door?

FREDRICKYes, I saw it. The London Board for Internal Executions. So?

  • 3

JOSHWe found a file that may be of some interest to you.

Josh grabs a folder off a desk and hands it to Fredrick. Fredrick reluctantly takes it, not taking him seriously.

FREDRICK(Reading) Conrad George, occupation Indian Herb doctor, criminal record, blah, blah, blah. Is there some point youre trying to make here?

    JOSHKeep reading.

FREDRICKGrounds for Admission, the murder of a prostitute on Durward Street. Seen by Agent DSM. So what, weve found a possible tourist attraction?

JOSHNo, weve found Jack The Ripper.

Fredrick hands the file back to Josh.

FREDRICKOh, look, Im not going to sit here and listen to your childish theories about potentially finding a killer, for goodness sake.

JOSHSir! Please, just hear me out.

Josh hands Fredrick the file. Fredrick does not take it.

FREDRICKWhy havent you reported this to the police?

JOSHBecause I need someone whos an established cop to put it forward for me.

  • 4FREDRICK

Oh and dont tell me, this is where I come in?

    JOSHYeah.

FREDRICKAnd what makes you think Im actually going to do it?

JOSHBecause youre more determined than any of us to find this guy.

    Fredrick opens the file.

FREDRICKNot a word of this to anyone until I decide what to do.

    Fredrick begins reading.

FREDRICK1st September 1888. Eight oclock PM. George Conrad, an American Doctor has been involuntarily admitted to the board to assist us in Project Clean Street. We brought him to the Whitechapel base site and when questioned, the mark had the following to say:

    +Enter George & Men

Seven men burst in, dragging Conrad violently and begin questioning him. Conrad is an American man, the rest are British.

    DEREKGood evening Mr. George.

    CONRADWho the hell are you?

    They stage talk.

  • 5FREDRICK

The mark refused to answer simple questions relating to his personal circumstance, choosing instead to ask silly questions about the group before he had signed any of the revenant contracts.

DEREKYou my friend need to answer our questions or youre going to find yourself with one hell of a problem.

JOHNHow about you just start with your name.

CONRADDont you already know my name?

DEREKYes, but we need to know if we can trust you or not.

    CONRADFine.

FREDRICKThe mark began introducing himself. All members of the board had previously memorised his personal details and were able to come to the judgement that he was making an attempt to give us false information.

DEREKLet me tell you something. If theres one thing in this world I cant stand, amongst other things of course, its a prostitute and a liar. You my friend are a liar. You have lied to us.

    CONRADI -

  • 6DEREK

Look, we have all, we know all. Be straight with us. Do you know why youre here.

    FREDRICKThe mark replied: Yes.

    Beat.CONRAD

    It was an accident.

DEREKThats not what the police said.

CONRADShe threw herself at me, I acted in self defence.

DEREKLook, we arent here to try and clear your name. Were here to offer you a potential lifeline.

    CONRADI dont understand.

DEREKWe form the London Board for Internal Executions. We take local matters into our own hands and dispose of them.

    CONRADWhy me?

DEREKYou killed a prostitute and you were ready to live with it. Youre perfect material.

CONRADBut I couldnt do that as a job.

DEREKIf you dont, well report you to the police and ensure you end up rotting in a prison.

CONRADWhat would I have to do?

  • 7DEREK

Well, as you can imagine, were short staffed. Were in the middle of a big project, that being Project Green Streets.

    CONRADWhat does that entail?

JOHNWhitechapels streets are littered with prostitutes. The obvious thing to do with litter is to clean it. Thats where we come in.

CONRADAnd how would you clean this litter.

    DEREKBy dramatically killing them.

    CONRADKilling all prostitutes?

JOHNNo! Killing them dramatically. Ensuring its front page news, then all the other prostitutes become too scared to cruise looking for business.

CONRADHow long have you been planning this?

DEREKLonger than you could ever imagine.

CONRADAnd if I say no, my life is over?

DEREKOver like a bullet in the back of the brain.

FREDRICKThe mark agreed to come on board without second thought.

  • 8DEREK

Right welcome aboard. This here is the board. Stewart Johnson, Martin Alcott, Francis OConnor, Ronan Thatcher, James Thomas-St. Marlo, John Monroe and Im Derek Smith. You have six hours to pack everything you own and move to our agreed hotel. You will be living in hotels from now on, so be minimalistic. No clutter, no luxuries. Only whats necessary. Ronan will meet you at the hotel and help you get settled in, from then on youre on your own. You begin your first day of work here tomorrow.

FREDRICKWe informed the mark that he would be participating in his induction project on his first night. The escape leaflet was handed to him and given to read. We have solid grounds to believe he did read the leaflet. He returned the next morning for work.

-Exit All (Exc. Josh & Fredrick)

    JOSHWell?

FREDRICKLook, Josh its a bit of a long shot isnt it. We have no way of knowing if this is real or not. I think wed be best to leave it.

JOSHFredI mean Sir. Could you really live with yourself knowing you came this close to uncovering the man responsible for all those deaths and didnt follow through?

Fredrick sits down. Josh smiles and sits with him.

    -Exit Fredrick & Josh

    Blackout.

  • 9The room is transformed back to what it would have been when it was in use.

Morning time. The other members of the board are getting on with their day to day activities. Derek is sat at his desk reading a letter, holding it at arms length due to bad eyesight.

    +Enter Conrad

DEREKAh Conrad, I was worried youd left us then. Lovely to see you.

CONRADJust for the record, not one inch of me agrees with or enjoys this. I want to make that clear from now.

DEREKRule number one, keep your mouth shut. If in doubt, my friend, leave it out. Its probably best unsaid.

CONRADRight, is there anything else I should know?

DEREKYes. Im not a huge fan of attitude, sass or sarcasm. My sense of humour will run very dry should you test me on those factors. Do I make myself clear?

    CONRADVery much so.

DEREKGood. This here will be your desk. You might wanna give it a little scrub, its been quite a while since someone used it. We begin work tonight with your initiation.

    CONRADInitiation?

    DEREKExactly what I said.

  • 10

CONRADI wasnt aware theres an initiation.

DEREKIts nothing personal, its just so we know if a. we can trust you and b. we need to put a bullet in the back of your head before you blab to anyone. Right, gentlemen, gather round please.

    All gather round a blackboard.

DEREKTonight is our new agents initiation task. This project will be called BR09. That stands for Bank Robbery number nine.

CONRADYouve made more than one bank robbery in the past?

DEREKMr. George, we have made numerous bank robberies in the past, as we have had to initiate new members like yourself.

CONRADDid you have to do it?

    All roll eyes.

DEREKIm an ex-bank robber. Thats the skill I use to run this board. So, for the record No. I havent been initiated.

    CONRADBut shouldnt you -

DEREKIf I were you, Id stop talking.

Beat. Derek illustrates the following on the blackboard.

DEREKSo, the target bank is the bank near Scotland Yard.

  • 11DEREK

The vaults are in the basement. Thats our target, to get in there and grab as much money as possible. Agent Conrad you will be the one to lead the robbery. Some members of the board will be posing as members of staff in the bank. Your goal is to do it without anyone knowing. Cause as little fuss at possible. Thats the ultimate goal. Do I make myself clear?

    ALL (EXC. DEREK)Yes.

DEREKGood. Agent Conrad, your instructions are to enter the bank. Go over to desk two. The codeword is Id like to pay this cheque in please. Sorry about the stain.

    CONRADMore of a code sentence.

Derek gives Conrad a look. Conrad acknowledges.

DEREKWe have four hours to prepare, you know what to do. Thank you.

    Derek goes to walk out.

DEREKConrad have four and a half hours to prepare. Disguise is in the cupboard. Err, James, can you help him please.

    JAMESFine.

-Exit All Exc. James & Conrad

    Awkward pause.

CONRADWe havent been introduced, Im Conrad.

  • 12JAMES

    I know.

    CONRADYou been working here long?

    JAMESFive years or so.

CONRADYou look too young to be working here.

    JAMESI beg your pardon?

CONRADI mean you havent lived yet. How old are you?

    JAMESIm nineteen.

CONRADSee Im thirty eight, Ive had plenty of time to live before this.

JAMESIs there some point youre trying to make here?

    CONRADWhy dont you quit?

JAMESBecause we all know how thatll end up.

    CONRADHow will it end up?

    JAMESIn a grave.

    Pause.

CONRADSo what if you just didnt turn up for work one day?

  • 13JAMES

So long as Im in the country, theyll find me.

CONRADSo thats your answer! Go abroad!

JAMESI cant afford that! I can barely afford my apartment in Camden! Look, I appreciate what youre trying to do here, but can we drop it?

    CONRADIf you want.

    Pause.

CONRADDid you do the bank robbery?

    JAMESYes.

    CONRADAny advice?

    JAMESIm not allowed.

    CONRADReally? Not even for me?

    James looks at Conrad.

JAMESWhats your game? What are you trying to do?

CONRADGet to know you. You seem pretty amazing.

JAMESYou know its unprofessional to talk about our private lives in the workplace.

    CONRADSo meet with me after?

  • 14JAMES

    Stop it.

    CONRADWhat?

JAMESThis. Ive spent the whole of my life trying to get away from this.

    CONRADThis being?

JAMESThis! You know what I mean! Its wrong!

CONRADHow could it possibly be wrong?

JAMESYou read the papers! You see people spending the rest of their days in prison because of bull shit like this!

CONRADThats because they do it openly.

JAMESOpenly or not, why would they arrest people?

    CONRADOut of ignorance.

JAMESThere must be something wrong with what were doing.

    CONRADDo you enjoy it?

    No answer.

    CONRADDo you enjoy it?

    JAMESIm not answering that.

    +Enter Francis

  • 15CONRAD

Whatever people say, I dont care. I follow my heart, however sick people think it is.

    Beat.

    They notice Francis.

FRANCISExcuse my intrusion, I just forgot a few things.

    CONRADWe were just -

FRANCISOh Conrad. Its none of my business. I have nothing against you people, but Id prefer it if you kept it to yourselves.

    Beat.

JAMESRight, disguise. The most effective is the subtle of alterations to your features.

    CONRADRight, so moustache?

JAMESYouve got to think a little further outside the box. How about a false nose?

    James looks in a box.

    -Exit Francis

JAMESThat was way too close. Now I swear to God if you dont drop this now, I will have no trouble telling Derek you exposed the group.

Conrad goes to speak, James slaps a false nose on him.

  • 16JAMES

Perfect. Try that nose, a pair of glasses and a wig.

    James goes through the box.

    CONRADYou cant avoid it forever.

JAMESI have full intentions of avoiding it forever.

CONRADSo what, you get married, have no sex and -

JAMESLook, its none of your business. If you choose to be a zanie, thats your choice. Dont bring me into it.

    CONRADZanie?

    JAMESIts complicated.

    CONRADAh, young peoples thing?

JAMESWhat are you trying to say?

CONRADNothing. Youre just a bit old to be using slang like that. Someone not wanting to grow up?

    JAMESIm not too old -

    CONRADYoure a young man.

    JAMESIm a boy.

    CONRADWho told you that?

  • 17JAMES

    My parents of course?

CONRADWere all boys to our parents. What else did they tell you?

    JAMESNone of your business!

CONRADWorthless, never going to get anywhere?

    Beat.

    JAMESYes.

CONRADBelieve me, Ive been places in my time.

    JAMESWith all due respect -

    +Enter Derek

DEREKWell, well, well. Whats going on here?

    They dont answer.

DEREKGot ourselves a pair of back door dealers have we?

    JAMESYouve no proof.

    DEREKI need no proof.

CONRADTo go to the police you do!

DEREKWho said Im going to the police? The police get in the way of things. I prefer simply to take matters into my own hands.

  • 18CONRAD

So what are you going to do?

    Beat.

DEREKNothing. You havent told me anything.

    Derek walks to his desk.

DEREKBut if I find out either of you are indulging in that filth, Ill kill you. Both of you. Now get yourselves to the bank of England. Now.

Conrad puts the false nose and wig on.

    -Exit Conrad & James

Derek chuckles. He then turns out the light and leaves.

    -Exit Derek

    Blackout.

    +Enter Josh & Fredrick

    FREDRICKThats weird.

    JOSHWhat?

FREDRICKTheres a page torn out of this and something else taped in.

    JOSHSo?

FREDRICKCall yourself a cop? Someones altered it.

JOSHMaybe it was accidentally torn out and someone taped it back in.

  • 19FREDRICK

Oh no, no. Its a different ink colour. Theres more to that story than meets the eye. Something else happened there and someone doesnt want us to know about it.

    JOSHWho? And why?

FREDRICKJosh my friend, you and I both know thats not how a case works. Well find out right at the end if and when someone slips up. Which they will.

JOSHI doubt it. Although it might be interesting to see who did it.

    FREDRICKIndeed.

    JOSHSo, where next?

FREDRICKThe bank robbery. Not documented for security reasons.

    JOSHThats annoying.

FREDRICKBut they did document a constructive group advice session that got out of hand.

    JOSHWhich is?

    FREDRICKAn argument, basically.

    JOSHThis will be interesting...

    +Enter Conrad

    Conrad is clearly distressed.

  • 20-Exit Josh & Fredrick

+Enter Stewart, Martin, Francis, Ronan and James

RONANLook, I get the whole initiation thing is stressful, but you did over react a little.

    MARTINA little?

RONANI wouldve done the same, so I cant really -

MARTINNo one wouldve done anything even close to that, I think youll find.

FRANCISAlright, can we dial it down a bit?

    STEWARTYeah.

MARTINWhy are we trying to make him feel better? Dereks going to murder him when he gets here!

    Conrad moves closer to Martin.

CONRADMaybe because these people are trying to be a bit supportive!

MARTINWell thats one way of putting it.

    CONRADWhat is your problem?

MARTINIm just calling it as I see it.

CONRADWell I have news for you.

  • 21CONRAD

Youre not Derek, youre never going to be anywhere near where Derek is. You are nothing but a gangster wannabe whos never going to get anywhere because the world knows that too.

    Martin goes to punch Conrad.

    +Enter Derek

    Derek power walks in.

    DEREKYou better start FUCKING EXPLAINING!!!

Derek has Conrad up against the wall with a gun against his head.

    DEREKWHAT HAPPENED?!

CONRADPlease, could you let me down so I can explain.

    Derek reluctantly does so.

    CONRADIt was an accident.

    DEREKWHY YOU -

CONRADI didnt mean for this to happen. I walked in and she knew what was going on, we were doomed from when we first walked in. The woman wasnt stupid!

DEREKWeve been doing this years and suddenly is fucks up?

CONRADIts because youve been doing it for years.

    DEREKOh it is, is it?

  • 22CONRAD

    Yes. It is.

    DEREKOh please do elaborate.

CONRADYouve done this so many times, with the same bank. Theyve finally cottoned onto what youre doing. Isnt it obvious?

DEREKThe only obvious thing to me is the fact youre very close to getting your teeth kicked in!

CONRADThink about it! It happens so many times, theyve learnt.

    Pause.

DEREKYou are very lucky Conrad. Very lucky. Next time, your feet wont touch the fucking ground.

    Beat.

MARTINId like to make a complaint.

    DEREKAbout?

    MARTINConrad. (Pause) He assaulted me.

DEREKIs that so? Youve got a lot of nerve assaulting another member of staff when it was you who was clearly in the wrong just then.

RONANI saw the whole thing and he didnt touch him.

    Pause.

  • 23DEREK

My eyes are GLUED to the both of you. Do you hear?

    BOTHYes.

DEREKNow you best sit down and HOPE this doesnt mean exposure.

    Everyone gets back to work.

    -Exit Derek

John walks over to Conrads desk.

    JOHNConrad?

    CONRADWhat?

JOHNWe just wanted to say, were sorry about what happened. We want you to know we dont blame you.

    CONRADThanks for the sympathy.

    JOHNWhats this?

    CONRADIts a puzzle.

JOHNIve never seen one like that, what are you suppose to do?

CONRADYou basically have to get different words in line with each other according to...I cant explain it. Its a puzzle for a reason.

JOHNOh, so youre a fan of puzzles?

  • 24CONRAD

    Err, not really.

JOHNOh. Im a huge fan of puzzles. Anything like that. Illusions, magic, enigmas. Anything like that.

CONRADWell of course Im a fan of magic.

JOHNOh. Cant say I blame you. Ever heard of Erich Weiss?

    CONRADErich who?

    JOHNWeiss. American guy.

    CONRADNot ringing any bells.

JOHNOh. Hes a trapeze artist. Only nine, but amazing. Calls himself Erich Prince of Air. Quite funny actually. He was talking about trying to get into magic.

    CONRADBit young isnt he?

JOHNMaybe. He seemed alright to me.

CONRADNever seen a magic show. Saw a mind reader once, thats about it.

    JOHNA mindreader?

    CONRADYes...

JOHNHave you seen the Fox sisters?

  • 25CONRAD

The who sisters? You have a very obscure knowledge of celebrities I must say.

JOHNThe Fox Sisters. They did this thing called Spirituality.

CONRADOhh, wait, were they the ones who exposed themselves as fakes?

    JOHNYes, thats them.

CONRADI remember reading about that in the paper. Why do you ask?

JOHNWell, I travel to America quite a bit you see and I couldnt help noticing your Irish-American accent. So I assumed youd heard of them.

CONRADOh no, no. I mean I know what they do now, but before the papers Id never heard of them. Why do you ask?

JOHNI was actually hoping youd like to come and try something with me?

    CONRADWhat kind of something?

JOHNIm in need of a bit of money and I think I have a good way of making it.

    Conrad does not answer.

JOHNI thought we could host a seance, a fake one of course and I was hoping...

  • 26Beat.

    JOHNYoud be the medium?

    CONRADNo way on earth!

JOHNCome on. Whatve you got to loose?

    CONRADWhere would we do it?

    JOHNIn here. Tonight.

CONRADYouve got to be joking! Were you not in the bank earlier? Im on a thin line!

JOHNYes, I know. Im happy to take full responsibility for it...if we get exposed, which we wont.

CONRADHow can you be so sure?

    JOHNIve done this before.

    CONRADYouve done this before?

JOHNI have! I did it only the night before you were recruited.

CONRADHow can you do this? Youve seen what Derek is like, Idve thought thatd be enough to keep you out of that foolishness.

JOHNLook, are you in or are you out?

  • 27CONRAD

I...I must be out of my mind. Im in.

JOHNGood. Everyone will be out of office at about six oclock. Derek will be out at that time too, because hes got a theatre trip this evening.

CONRADAnd youre certain he wont come here?

JOHNHe usually hires a prostitute following the show.

    CONRADHypocrite.

JOHNHey. Just because he preaches something for a job, doesnt mean he has to actually believe it. Also he disagrees with prostitutes on the street, not in the theatre. He thinks prostitution should be a respected, discrete profession.

CONRADHow do you know all this?

JOHNDerek has a syndrome a lot of big headed men possess. When given the opportunity to talk about himself, he never shuts up.

CONRADIm sure youre right. So what do I have to do?

JOHNWell, we meet at eleven oclock here.

CONRADSo what do I have to do?

  • 28JOHN

Go home when you finish and revise these.

John hands Conrad a wad of papers.

JOHNThese are statements and things youll need to pick up on tonight. Theyll cue us in to make things happen.

CONRADHow do you intend to make things happen?

JOHNLeave that to us. Its better if the medium is startled too.

CONRADWill you have enough time to get all this prepared before the meeting time?

JOHNIve been doing this a while, trust me.

    Conrad giggles.

    +Enter Josh & Fredrick

JOSHHow do we know that was said?

FREDRICKBecause this is how Conrad admitted to getting into fraudulent mediumship.

    JOSHYou mean he got exposed?

FREDRICKNo, he offered to carry out a task using his new found skills.

    JOSHAnd...

  • 29FREDRICK

    Derek turned him down.

JOSHSo he killed them? He mustve if he knew what they were doing?

    Beat.

FREDRICKThe Action Taken box is blank.

    JOSHSo what happened that night?

FREDRICKTheres a copy of the script for the night attached. Whoever wrote this definitely had no intention of keeping it.

    JOSHWhat makes you say that?

    FREDRICKIts all scrunched up.

    JOSHMeaning?

FREDRICKWhoever found this, found it probably in a waste paper bin.

    Beat.

    JOSHDerek.

FREDRICKIt says: An Evening of Spirituality...

    Faded Blackout.

Lights up. John and Francis are putting the finishing touches on the room.

    +Enter Conrad

    JOHNConrad hello.

  • 30CONRAD

Hi. I only got halfway through this script you gave me.

JOHNThats fine, just be ready for them to come in.

    CONRADAre you sure youre prepared?

JOHNYes, dont worry. Look, people! Well be in the darkness.

Lights lower in brightness. John and Francis disappear.

    +Enter People

    Small group of people.

CONRADGood evening. Welcome to this evenings seance. My name is Conrad, Ill be your medium this evening, so if you wouldnt mind taking a seat for me.

    The group do so.

Conrad lights a candle and turns the lights out completely.

CONRADMay I first warn you all that what you are about to witness and be a part of is something that is to be treated with the upmost respect for your own safety.

    Everyone nods.

CONRADIn that, case I will begin. (Pause. Lower tone) I call upon the restless souls of the deceased to come forward and make yourselves known. You may do this by ringing the bell upon the table.

    Silence.

  • 31CONRAD

I want you to hear my voice. I want you to follow my voice forward into our world. Please use our energy to make yourselves known...we are no longer alone. Someone has come through. Please could you make yourself known to everyone else in the room by ringing the bell.

    Beat.

The bell gently, but definitely rings.

CONRADWelcome. On the table we have a spirit ball and a second candle. Id like you to make yourself known to the doubters that may be present in the room through the other items...in your own time.

The spirit ball rises. A large flame erupts from the candle and burns the spirit ball.

CONRADThank you. Ladies and Gentlemen, Id like us to form a circle with our hands. This circle of energy is not to be broken under any circumstances. I repeat, do not break the circle under any circumstances. Am I clear?

    People nod.

CONRADRight, so forming a circle of energy on this board here, Id like us to ficus our energy onto the small disc.

Everyone puts their fingers on the disc.

CONRADSpirits, I call upon you to come forward and deliver the messages you were unable to in your life.

    The disc moves to hello.

  • 32CONRAD

Hello. Welcome to our circle of energy. What is your name?

The Ouija Board spells out GRACE.

    CONRADG...R...A...C...E...Grace, is that your name?

    Disc moves to YES.

CONRADYes, good. Welcome Grace. Can you tell us how old you are please?

    Disc moves to 6.

CONRADYoure six. Good, very good. And Grace if you could -

Conrad appears to choke, then composes himself.

CONRADSorry. Grace is trying to communicate through me, but I wont be able to do that. Is anyone in this room willing to allow grace to communicate through them?

    Beat.

    Beat.

A woman puts her hand up.

CONRADGood, very good madam. And what is your name?

    DORRISIts Dorris.

CONRADDoris. Do you mind if I call you that?

    DORRISNo, No. Of course.

  • 33CONRAD

Good, good. So Im going to give Grace permission to communicate with you now. Is that okay?

    DORRISYes.

CONRADGrace, I hereby give you permission to -

    DORRISMother?

    CONRADGrace?

    DORRISMother?

CONRADNo, no Im not your mother. Grace, Id like to come to you when youre a bit older. Is that okay?

    DORRISYes.

CONRADGood. How old are you now?

    DORRISIm twenty.

    CONRADAnd how did you die?

DORRISI was murdered. A man killed me.

CONRADDo you have a name of the man?

    Dorris does not answer.

CONRADOkay, thats alright if youd rather now answer...can you tell us about yourself?

  • 34DORRIS

    Im a west end actress.

CONRADOh wow, do you enjoy it?

    DORRISI love it.

CONRADAnd what brings you to this building?

DORRISIt used to be a theatre. Now it looks strange and different.

CONRADA theatre, you say? Right here?

    DORRISNo, near here.

    CONRADWas it underground?

    DORRISYes.

CONRADAh. The theatre Grace refers to is the Criterion Theatre on Piccadilly Circus.

    DORRISIs it still there?

CONRADYes, its still there, but there is a much bigger stage for you on the other side.

DORRISNo, No, I cant go there yet. I need to stay here.

    CONRADWhy?

    Dorris does not answer.

  • 35CONRAD

    Grace?

    DORRISI think shes left.

CONRADThank you for doing that for us Grace. Youve given us a real insight. Im going to call any other spirits to come forward. Anyone who wishes to speak with us, please make yourself know-

The bell violently tips over on the table.

CONRADWe have another spirit present. Am I correct?

    The unlit candle tips over.

CONRADId like to invite you to speak with us.

The table violently moves slightly as if kicked.

CONRADWe have what we call a bolder spirit here. I assure you that no harm is going to come to you this evening as long as we keep the circle strong.

    People nervously nod.

    CONRADAre you female?

    Beat.

    CONRADAre you -

    Table violently moves.

    CONRADMale.

    Beat.

  • 36CONRAD

Id like to establish contact with you. So to keep our communication solid, can you knock lightly on the table. Once for yes twice for no. Are we agreed?

    Bang on the table once.

CONRADGood. Do you wish to speak with anyone specifically?

    Bang on the table once.

CONRADIs this person in the room?

    Bang on the table once.

CONRADCould you use the disc to show which -

The ouija board violently moves toward Conrad.

    Beat.

CONRADYou wish to speak with me?

    The table briefly vibrates.

CONRADIs there anything in specific youd like to say to me?

The Ouija board spells out BEWARE without anyone touching it.

    CONRADWhat should I beware of?

The Ouija board points to Dereks desk.

    CONRADDereks desk?

    The table vibrates.

  • 37CONRAD

Why should I beware of Dereks desk?

    Silence.

CONRADOkay, Id like us to call it a night for -

Conrad chokes then puts his head down. He then lifts his head up and looks a complete different person.

CONRADWhat are you looking at? Do you see a spectacle over here? Do you? DO YOU?!

    Beat.

    CONRADGet out.

    Beat.

    CONRADI SAID GET OUT!!!!

The table vibrates violently and a loud buzzing noise comes from underground. Everyone runs out.

    -Exit All (Exc. Conrad)

    +Enter Francis & John

They all laugh. As does Conrad.

JOHNAnd that my friends is how you make two hundred pounds in an instant.

CONRADListen, that thing about Dereks desk, that was a bit beneath the belt wasnt it?

JOHNSorry, look just try not to give off the impression we know this building in future. Ruins the illusion.

  • 38CONRAD

So, how did you do it?

JOHNLets not spoil the illusion now. The point is weve made money and more importantly, youve made money too.

    They hand Conrad an envelope.

CONRADYou dont have to do that. Idve done it anyway.

JOHNTake it and treat yourself to a nice evening out at the theatre.

    Beat.

    CONRADThanks.

JOHNNow go, weve got to put everything back the way it was. Well see you in the morning.

    -Exit Conrad

    +Enter Josh & Fredrick

    JOSHDisgusting.

FREDRICKWell, that is how it started.

    JOSHSo its all fake?

    FREDRICKJudging by the history, yes.

    JOSHSpirituality is fake.

FREDRICKWell, everyones entitled to believe what they please...

  • 39FREDRICK

But I choose to look at the history and the facts.

    JOSHSo what are the facts?

FREDRICKA group of sisters started performing seances and what not, then after a few years one of the sisters confessed they were frauds. Of course that didnt stop spirituality taking off all over the world.

JOSHThats not to say its all fake.

FREDRICKUgh, Josh thats not what I said. I just think, as humans, weve got the wrong end of the stick on the whole spirituality thing.

JOSHSo whats the right end of the stick?

    Beat.

FREDRICKThats what we are yet to find out.

Fredrick re-opens the file. A sheet of paper falls out.

    JOSHWhats that?

FREDRICKOh this is in the wrong folder. It should be in Stuart Johnsons folder.

JOSHWho the hell is Stewart Johnson?

FREDRICKProbably one of the board members.

  • 40JOSH

    What happened to him?

+Enter Conrad, Stewart, Martin, Francis, Ronan, James & John

    -Exit Josh & Fredrick

They are getting on with day-to-day activities.

    +Enter Derek

Derek slams the door. Everyone is startled.

DEREKI hate liars. (Pause) I hate liars. Maybe its in the genes. I cant stand someone who deliberately says something thats not true to save their own skin. Or even just for a bit of fun. Of course the time comes when it bites them on the arse...and the lie is exposed.

    Silence.

    DEREKStewart Johnson, on your feet.

    Stewart does so.

DEREKWhat youre looking at is the prime example of a liar.

STEWARTDerek, youve got the wrong end of the stick.

    DEREKThe what?

STEWARTYouve just misunderstood what I actually -

DEREKThis is what Im talking about. Saving your own skin.

    STEWARTI dont lie.

  • 41Derek harshly laughs.

DEREKAre we hearing this people? Another blatant lie from a now compulsive liar. Cut the bull shit, what did you say to them?

    Beat.

STEWARTDerek, I swear to you I did not tell them anything. Ive been working here for years and I would never do such a thing.

    DEREKYou swear it?

Stewart nods. Derek turns his back.

    Stewart walks toward Derek.

STEWARTDerek, I, sorry you mis -

Derek shoots Stewart in the forehead. Stewart falls to the floor.

DEREKIf anyone else fancies lying to me, just see what happens. I dare you. Now get this body off my floor. Put in the incinerator out back.

Ronan and Martin take the body out.

    -Exit Martin & Ronan

    -Exit Derek

James walks over to Conrads desk.

    JAMESConrad.

    CONRADWell hello to you.

JAMESWhat are you doing tomorrow night?

  • 42CONRAD

Im not sure, we might be on a mission.

    Martin is watching.

    JAMESI dont think we are.

    CONRADWhy do you ask?

JAMESDo you want to meet up?

CONRADOf course. What did you have in mind?

    JAMESI mean can we...meet up?

    CONRADOhh. Yeah, sure.

Conrad writes on a small piece of paper.

CONRADThis is the address of my hotel. This is my door number here. Seven oclock tomorrow night?

    JAMESPerfect.

    CONRADIm glad were doing this.

    JAMESJust...please...dont.

    James walks away.

    -Exit James

Conrad walks over to Francis desk.

CONRADFrancis, you know what happened yesterday?

    Conrad looks at martin.

  • 43FRANCIS

    Clearer than my ex-wifes complexion.

CONRADYeah, did you manage to get everything cleared up?

FRANCISConrad, I told you. Weve been doing that for years. Its nothing. Took us ten minutes.

    MARTINWhat happened last night?

Francis and Conrad look at Martin.

FRANCISI dont think thats any of your business, thank you very much.

MARTINWell Im quite sure its Dereks business.

FRANCISIf you knew what was good for you, you would keep that filthy mouth of yours shut.

MARTINWell, well, well gentlemen. Whats wrong with a man being a bit nosey.

CONRADGo back to sucking up to Derek.

    Beat.

MARTINIm loosing patience with you Conrad, I must say. Youre wearing it very fine.

FRANCISLets dial it down. Martin, please just do us a favour and go away.

    -Exit Martin

  • 44+Enter Fredrick & Josh

    JOSHWhat next?

    FREDRICKTheir first official mission.

    JOSHWell, what happened?

FREDRICKConrad went over the nights agreed quota and risked the exposure of the entire board.

    -Exit Fredrick & Josh

+Enter Martin, Ronan, James & John

    Everyone is panicked.

    RONANConrad, hide behind here?

CONRADHes going to kill me! Hes going to kill me!

    RONANJust stay behind here.

Ronan clears a corner of the office for Conrad to hide in.

RONANOh my God, hes coming, hes coming. Just stay in here and you should be fine.

    +Enter Derek

    DEREKWhere is he?

    No one answers.

    DEREKWHERE THE FUCK IS HE?!

    MARTINHes behind there.

  • 45Conrad reveals himself reluctantly. Derek Grabs him and sits him down.

DEREKAre you stupid or mentally ill? Please tell me because I would very much like to know.

CONRADI promise you I did not mean for that to happen!

    DEREKTwo people. TWO PEOPLE!!!

CONRADYoud have killed me either way, so I thought at least Id have met the quota if one survived. Someone caught me!

    DEREKWHO? WHO??

CONRADSome policeman. He chased me all the way here!

    DEREKHe what?

All listen. Sound of footsteps walking down the staircase.

    END OF ACT ONE

  • 46ACT TWO

Martin is sat at his desk in the office on his own. He glares into space.

    +Enter Ronan

RONANNew level Martin. Even for you.

Ronan begins shaking his head and sits at his desk.

    +Enter Derek

Martin does not notice Dereks entrance. Derek signals Ronan to leave.

    -Exit Ronan

    DEREKThink youre clever do you?

    Beat.

    MARTINFor the record, no.

DEREKI dont know what the hell you were thinking. You couldve had all of us exposed. All because of your silliness.

MARTINThe police were right there! What was I suppose to do?

    +Enter Conrad

Conrad stands unnoticed in the doorway.

DEREKTO FINISH THE JOB!!! Finish the God Damn job and not be a coward. Your life is over as it is, youre lucky youre still alive. You couldve been in prison right now if it wasnt for me. I own you now. Got it? You are my property.

    Pause.

  • 47CONRAD

    Clearer than crystal.

DEREKGood. Any more mishaps from you and believe me, your feet will not touch the ground. Now get out of my sight!!

    Martin walks towards the door.

    MARTIN(To Conrad) Enjoy the show?

    -Exit Martin

    DEREKConrad, a moment please.

    Conrad moves towards Derek.

DEREKYou and Martin have a big thing in common. You dont think about things before rushing into them.

    +Enter Martin

Martin does the same as Conrad.

DEREKHowever, you are more reliable than Martin, I notice. Therefore Id like you to take our an emergency procedure we call the Clearing of Back Tracks.

    -Exit Martin

DEREKIts a very important process that requires the upmost of care and caution. Should you mess this up, you may find yourself in a whole heap of other trouble.

    CONRADBut what about Martin?

DEREKI really couldnt care less about what he thinks or does.

  • 48DEREK

He made a very big error today which now means were behind on our targets and weve never been behind. Do you accept the task?

    Pause.

    CONRADYes. I do.

DEREKGood. We have contacts granting us access to essentially anything we please in most of the record banks you can think of. Your job is to liaise with these people. Do everything in your power to ensure we disappear off the public radar. Clear?

    CONRADClear.

DEREKThe whole process might take you a while, unless you know what youre doing and youre able to beat the system.

CONRADBrilliant. Ill get that done as soon as I can.

    DEREKExcellent.

    +Enter Josh & Fredrick

    JOSHWhy was that in there?

FREDRICKBecause he did such a good job at it.

Josh reads the small slip of paper Fredrick hands to him.

  • 49JOSH

Following being given the task of covering the back tracks, Agent C has proven an interesting ability in the procedure.

    FREDRICKNow this is interesting?

    JOSHWhat is it?

FREDRICKIts a letter from Jack The Ripper. The famous one.

    JOSHThe one from hell?

    FREDRICKThe exact one.

    JOSHSo he wrote it?

FREDRICKNot necessarily. Theres a additional note here saying that the letter was in fact written by Agent M. Leader was told that the letter was a form of revenge upon peer agent. Details still unknown.

JOSHSo he didnt actually write that?

    FREDRICKThats what is says.

    JOSHWhat did the letter say?

Fredrick sighs. Lights up on Martin writing the letter.

FREDRICKFrom hellMr LuskSorI send you half the Kidney I took from one women preserved it for you tother price

  • 50FREDRICK

I fried and ate it was very nice I may send you the bloody knife that took it out if you only wait a while longer.signedCatch me whenyou CanMister Lusk.

There were an awful lot of spelling mistakes in that.

    JOSHI can tell.

FREDRICKIt says they knew it was Martin by the spelling of certain words being wrong. A literacy test they took when initiated proved this.

    JOSHWow.

    Beat.

    FREDRICKThree documents left.

    Beat.

JOSHI only read the first two.

    FREDRICKYou know what this means?

    JOSHWhat does it mean?

FREDRICKThis is quite near the end of his life.

    JOSHYeah, so?

FREDRICKSo I suggest you have a bit of respect. This is a real persons life, not a novel.

  • 51JOSH

Okay. What happened in his last few moments?

Fredrick takes a deep breath in and out.

Lights up on Conrad at his desk.

    +Enter James

    JAMESWell hello to you.

    CONRADHello.

    They kiss.

CONRADIve just got to finish these emails and Ill be all done.

JAMESOh right. I saw a very nice restaurant near the hotel, I thought we could give it a try.

CONRADOr we could go back to yours.

    Beat.

CONRADI mean we might as well just get it over with. We need to keep a low profile anyway.

    Beat.

    James wells up.

JAMESOh okay. Sorry, I need to go.

    -Exit James

Conrad sighs and goes to run after him.

    +Enter Derek

  • 52DEREK

Now, funny story. I just saw James crying running up the stairs and I couldve sworn I was in a romantic book.

    Derek laughs.

    CONRADOh leave it out, please.

DEREKWow, wow, wow. Where are you going?

    CONRADTo go after him!

DEREKAh now lets not forget our place.

    CONRADI beg your pardon?

DEREKYou work for me, you are owned by me. So if I say SIT DOWN YOU SIT DOWN AND GET ON WITH WORK!!!!

Conrad grabs Derek by the throat. Derek laughs harshly.

DEREKGo on then. Do it. I dare you. Because if I die, a lot of people are going to make your life a living hell.

    Conrad lets go.

DEREKThat my friend is strike two. Third strike and youre out.

    CONRADWhat was strike one?

DEREKYou and James. Its sick, its disgusting. You keep it away from here.

  • 53DEREK

    Now get those letters sorted.

    -Exit Derek

    +Enter Ronan

RONANEverything alright, I just saw Derek storming out.

CONRADWhats it got to do with you?

    RONANAlright, I was only asking.

CONRADWell maybe no one asked for your opinion.

    Beat.

RONANYou know we may not know each other very well, but I like to think I have a very clear idea what your game is.

    CONRADOh please do enlighten me.

RONANI know your type. Youve got a lot of bark, but not so much bite.

    CONRADI beg your pardon?

RONANYou can use your mouth, but you crack when it actually comes down to it.

CONRADYou trying to say Im weak?

RONANOh no, youre not weak. Youve got all the bite there, but you dont use it.

  • 54CONRAD

And why do you think that is?

RONANMaybe because you dont believe in yourself.

    Beat.

CONRADWell thank you Ronan, you have really helped me.

    Conrad rolls eyes.

    Beat.

RONANAlthough we may not talk all that much, I do consider you more than a colleague. I consider you to be a friend. I have never said a word against you, Ive stuck up for you every chance Ive had. When you were recruited, I said no. I said to leave you be because you didnt deserve it. Even when Martin tries to spread stuff about you to Derek, Ive stuck up for you. I am tired of it. Ive probably been the greatest friend youve had in this whole board. You may not think it or you may think Im being big headed, but I really do disagree.

    Beat.

    CONRADIm sorry.

    RONANFor what?

    CONRADFor ever doubting you.

RONANIts fine. I understand, I really do. No ones ever really accepted me, which is how I ended up here.

  • 55CONRAD

I just wish I could have out of this group.

RONANYou want my advice? Go. Run away. Leave London and go as far as possible to a random place no ones even heard of. There is Jack shit left for you in London so I suggest you grab the opportunity while you can.

    CONRADWhat would I tell Derek?

RONANDont. Just go. Manliness is left at the door.

CONRADId have to speak to Derek first though. Its just in my nature.

RONANIts only my advice, take it or leave it. And rememberuse that bite.

    -Exit Ronan

    +Enter Francis & John

FRANCISConrad, weve got the most amazing thing youve got to hear.

    CONRADCan it wait?

JOHNWeve got a few private clients you could go and earn a little extra cash.

    CONRADFrancis, John -

FRANCISWe could be rich just think about it.

  • 56JOHN

    We could -

CONRADGentlemen, we couldnt do anything with it even if we were rich. Were on the board which means were stuck. Were unable to do anything with it. Please, can we just drop it?

FRANCISOh come on itd be fun, wouldnt it.

    JOHNWed have a ball.

CONRADI cant. I cant continue doing that.

JOHNConrad, youre good at this. Youre almost a professional fake psychic.

CONRADIm not sure I feel comfortable with that title.

FRANCISOh come on Conrad. You could be the best psychic this planet has ever had!

CONRADI DONT WANT TO!! Im sorry. I cant do this anymore.

    JOHNThanks for your loyalty.

CONRADIts nothing to do with that. What you do isnt for me.

FRANCISWe understand. Were crooks. Old frauds. Worth nothing worthwhile to you, so theres no point in us speaking with you anymore.

  • 57CONRAD

    Now youre being dramatic.

JOHNOH WERE BEING DRAMATIC ARE WE?!

    CONRADYouve just proved my point.

    Beat.

FRANCISYouve no right talking down to us. No right.

JOHNYou are exactly the same as us.

FRANCISYoure on the same level as us.

JOHNAll three of us are exactly the same person.

    Beat.

CONRADThats a terrible thing to say.

JOHNSometimes the truth can be terrible. Thats where liars are born.

CONRADI wont tell a living soul. I promise. Ill keep it all to myself and I wont tell anyone.

FRANCISFunny story about that. You see, we cant be taking that kind of risk.

CONRADLook around! We cant run around town blabbing. We can barely go and get a pint of milk from the shop. I couldnt tell anyone if I wanted to.

  • 58JOHN

We arent willing to give you even half of an opportunity to open your mouth.

FRANCISWe consider our work the same as this board.

    CONRADDirty?

    JOHN(Sternly) Confidential.

FRANCISSo you better gather your thoughts together and do it quick big boy, because we dont have time to be sitting around twiddling our thumbs and waiting for you.

    JOHNYouve until tomorrow.

    -Exit John & Francis

    +Enter James

CONRADAlright. I tell you the day something actually goes my way, Ill kill someone. Oh wait...

    Conrad laughs.

    JAMESConrad.

CONRADTripped twice on the way here, maybe its a sign.

    Conrad laughs.

    JAMESConrad!

    CONRADI even -

  • 59JAMES

    Conrad!!

    CONRADWhat?

James quickly goes and kisses Conrad.

    CONRADWhat was that for?

    JAMESI love you.

CONRADOh I love you too. I tell you the pavements nowadays -

    JAMESIm serious. I love you.

    Conrad does not answer.

JAMESLook Conrad, Ive never felt this way about a woman before, let alone a man. I cant sleep at night because Im up thinking about you and all the things we could be. You keep me awake at night. You shouldnt do that, it should be this job! I used to be kept awake thinking about that, but its you. You.

    Beat.

JAMESAnd Im scared. Im fucking scared. Youve seen what they do to people like us. They burn us at a stake for everyone to see.

    CONRADJames -

JAMESTHEY FRY US ALIVE!!!! THERES NO OTHER WAY OF LOOKING AT IT!!!!! IVE FUCKING FALLEN IN LOVE WITH YOU!!!!!

    James bursts into tears.

  • 60JAMES

Ive fallen in love with you. Ive ruined everything and...I dont know what to do.

    James collapses into Conrads arms.

CONRADWell get through this. I promise. Look at me.

    James does so.

CONRADI love you. I didnt think I did, but I do. I want to be with you and I dont think I could cope if we werent. We can make this work.

    JAMESHow?

CONRADWell go away. Somewhere. Well get on a train and head for the coast. Well start our own life there. No one has to know there, we can just enjoy life simply.

JAMESBut what if they find us?

CONRADThey wont. What are they going to do?

JAMESYou heard! Track us down and kill us!

CONRADWould you rather take the risk or stay here forever?

    JAMESWhere would we go?

CONRADWimborne. Pretty small area in the south. Wed be near the sea, its perfect.

  • 61JAMES

I dont know. How would we earn a living?

CONRADTherell be jobs. We could buy a caf down there. Sell coffee to people, chat to everyone. Wed make friends. No one would have to know. We could live together in a small house. Go to the beach on Sundays.

JAMESWhere would we find the money?

    CONRADIve got a bank account.

    JAMESHow?!

CONRADLook, what Derek doesnt know cant hurt him.

    JAMESIt can hurt you though.

CONRADDont worry about Derek, Ill speak to him. Well come to some sort of arrangement. If we cant, Ill pretend Im off on business and wont come back. You wait for me at waterloo. Yes?

    James nods.

    CONRADTonight. The coast. Simple life.

    Conrad hugs James.

    CONRADI love you.

JAMESI love you too. Ill pack everything. Quick as I can. Itll take me five minutes.

  • 62CONRAD

    Everything you can possibly carry.

    James giggles and runs out.

    -Exit James

Conrad goes and quickly clears out his desk. He puts items into a box.

+Enter Derek, Martin, Francis, Ronan and John

    DEREKGoing somewhere?

    CONRADYes actually.

    DEREKOh you are, are you.

CONRADDerek, Im grateful youve kept me on board and everything, but really this has gone far enough.

DEREKYoure telling me, when its gone far enough?

CONRADI want out Derek. Im going.

DEREKYou remember what I said when you were appointed?

CONRADYes and I want to give you my word that I wont tell anyone. You can even have our contact details -

    DEREKOUR?!

CONRADYes. James and I are off to the coast. I just thought I should come and tell you myself.

  • 63DEREK

Clearly you didnt listen to what I said when you were appointed.

CONRADLook, were in love can you just -

DEREKYou think he loves you? You actually think that man loves you?

    Beat.

    Derek laughs harshly.

CONRADOf course he does, dont be ridiculous -

DEREKHe doesnt love you. He wouldnt love you if you were the last man on earth!

    CONRADWhat makes you say that?

DEREKTake a look at yourself big boy. Youre a thug, youre an animal, youre a fake psychic, a thief and a murderer. Youre a Hitman. Thats all youre ever going to be. A hitman. You arent worth the dog shit on the bottom of my shoes. So when youve dropped from this cloud youve got your head stuck in, you can get back to work.

    Pause.CONRAD

    I quit.

    DEREKI beg your pardon?

CONRADIm leaving. I swear by the grace of God I wont come back and I wont tell anyone this place exists. Okay?

  • 64Pause.

DEREKIf you promise me you are going to make that man happy. Make yourself happy and keep this quiet. You not only have my permission, but my blessing. You better fucking make yourself happier than I could ever dream of being. BUT, you are to never come back here again. I mean London, not just this building. Clear?

    Conrad nods.

    CONRADGOODBYE DEREK.

Conrad offers a handshake. Derek turns round and walks away. Conrad goes to walk out, but Derek shoots him in the back of the head.

DEREKThere is only one way out of this board and thats a bullet in the back of the brain. Now GET THIS BODY OFF MY FLOOR!!!

Lights up on James who is still waiting at Waterloo train station.

    JOSHThats how it ended?

FREDRICKYou mean you didn't read the whole file?

JOSHNope. I only read the first page.

    FREDRICKSo how did you know?

JOSHI saw the name of the board and it all made sense.

    Fredrick looks at Josh.

    JOSHWhat?

  • 65FREDRICK

Nothing, thats just very good detective work.

    JOSHThank you.

    FREDRICKWell, thats that then.

    JOSHSo what now?

FREDRICKIll hand it in tomorrow morning. We should be getting home.

    JOSHThats it?

FREDRICKLook, Joshua. Theres been a very important message in the stories today. Look before you leap. Today you might be a detective, but one wrong or foolish move tomorrow and you could find yourself on the London Board for Internal Executions. All those men on that board got themselves on there. It wasnt anyone elses fault but their own.

JOSHThats a bit harsh isnt it?

FREDRICKHarsh, but very true. Just remember that in the future. Someone lost their life when they didnt take someone elses advice. The same person got on the wrong side of the law and ended up loosing what was left of his life. He was a Hitman. A hitman who took the wrong path.

    -Exit Fredrick

    Josh follows.
