Perform Heart and Soul with the band - ask for name of the song and facilitate realization that most people don’t know the name nor the composer nor the middle section of the song. 2. Introduce history of Hoagy Carmichael, with pictures from grave at Crown Hill Cemetry, plague in front of Gables, statue next to the IU Auditorium, Hoagy Carmichael Room – display power point slides. 3. Band performs Georgia – ask children to remember as much of lyrics as possible, story of sister. 4. Tell story of Hoagy writing Stardust in the middle of the night on the Book Nook piano, then play several video clips of Stardust and compare/ contrast realizing the essence of composition as melody, rhythm, and accompanying harmonies with variables of instrumentation, tempo, texture. 5. Band performs Stardust – project leadsheet and have children follow the written melody. 6. Facilitate improvisation on keyboards/ Orff instrument with Heart and Soul harmony pattern as ostinato using C-D-E and echoing patterns with various leaders. 7. In the Cool, cool, cool of the evening – display lyrics, perform and sing along
