Hockey in Cornwall
Hockey is a popular, family-orientated sport, offering a lifetime of sporting and social opportunities. Nationally, there are over 1100 clubs, one million young people with access to hockey and over 30,000 volunteers who coach, umpire, officiate and administer the game. Hockey in Cornwall is going from strength to strength. Essentially, everyone involved in Cornish hockey endeavours to develop the sport, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to start, stay and succeed in the game.
This booklet acts as a guide to hockey in Cornwall. It outlines county, club and school structures, as well as offering advice to anyone who would like to get involved in this fast, exciting game. There are opportunities for players, teachers, coaches, umpires and volunteers at all levels.
The Cornwall Sports Partnership works in conjunction with the Cornwall Hockey Association, focussing especially on increasing the number of young people involved in hockey, developing player, coach and umpire pathways, and supporting the club structure.
We are always looking to progress so your views and ideas are always welcome or if you would like to have more information on hockey in Cornwall, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hockey Coaching
Players, teachers and volunteers are encouraged to become qualified hockey coaches. The Cornwall Sports Partnership organises the following courses across the county.
LEADERSHIP This course is an introduction to all elements of hockey including coaching, umpiring and administration and acts as the first step on the coach education and umpiring programmes. This modular course links into the Sports Leaders Award (CSLA Bolt On) model. It is aimed at parents, players or students who want to assist in the introduction of the game, especially with younger players. Recommended for 14 years +
LEVEL 1 – VRQ Assistant Coach Award This is the minimum qualification for those who are involved in hockey coaching sessions, working 'normally' under a more senior coach. It covers the essential skills and knowledge necessary to run a safe and enjoyable session for introducing players to the game. The course includes:
• basic techniques • principles of play • use of small-sided games • the rules of the game • underpinning theory knowledge • skills to create a safe, enjoyable and effective environment
Open to all aged 16+, full award only when 18 years old.
LEVEL 2 – VRQ Coach Award This course is for those who wish to coach the techniques of the game beyond an introductory level and apply them to tactical play and the coaching of teams. It is only suitable for those with experience of coaching hockey.

Hockey Umpiring
The game of hockey cannot be played without umpires. There are lots of umpiring opportunities across the county – in schools, clubs and officiating competitions. The Cornwall Sports Partnership and Cornwall Umpires Association organise introductory umpire courses as well as mentoring qualified umpires to progress through the umpire pathway.
YOUNG UMPIRE AWARD Based solely on Mini Hockey, this is a fun introduction to hockey rules, designed for young players of 8 to 13 years. This award operates in schools and junior clubs.
FOUNDATION UMPIRE AWARD This Award is suitable for students (aged 14 +) or inexperienced club players who want to learn the Rules of the game and some basic umpiring skills. It is an enjoyable course involving a theory session in the classroom, an examination paper and a short practical assessment.
LEVEL ONE UMPIRE AWARD This Award is the passport to umpiring competitive hockey in England and is aimed at those who wish to take their umpiring seriously and officiate in local leagues and club games/events.
TEACHER – UMPIRING UPDATES Informal umpiring update sessions are organised to keep teachers and school coaches up to speed with the latest rules.

Better Clubs ..... Better Coaching ..... Better Sport in Cornwall
The Cornwall Sports Partnership delivers a multitude of activities throughout the year ranging from coach education courses to county player development centres and primary coaching festivals.
In the past four years, our coach education courses have helped over 1,000 people become fully-qualified sports coaches. We have also engaged over 40,000 children in sports activities in 10 different sports and have co-ordinated the delivery of a nationally-recognised leadership programme across the county.
Every year, the 10 sports development officers co-ordinate activity within schools and clubs that eventually leads to a team of competitors being selected to represent each of the 7 districts at the annual Cornwall Youth Games.
We try to support all sports activities and clubs within Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We work with volunteers and leadership programmes, enabling young people to embark on the player pathway for sport.
If you are interested in sport, want to develop your sports club or need coaches to deliver sport in your school, please contact the Cornwall Sports Partnership.
