The Wisdom of Spongebob Squarepants and Billy the Kid

Barrett and I saw Spongebob the Musical at TPAC last Sunday night, and it was

wonderful. Of course, it was wonderful spending time with my boy, but I was

pleasantly surprised with the depth of the message in the show. I don’t want to

spoil the plot, but there is an impending natural disaster facing Spongebob and his

neighbors. Spongebob and his friend Sandy think they have neutralized the threat

(through science, courage and friendship) but there are a few minutes when they

are uncertain of their fate. While Spongebob’s neighbors fight and blame each

other for their current situation, Spongebob reminds them of all the beauty that

surrounds them, what an amazing world they live in, and how lucky they are to

have each other for however long that may be. Yes, I cried.

Now that made me think of an old story about an old quote… “I shall finish the

game.” The quote is from the movie Young Guns II about Billy the Kid, not a great

movie, but that’s not the point. In the movie, Billy tells the story about three men

sitting around playing a game when another man runs in and tells them the world

is ending. The first man immediately runs to the nearest church to pray and ask

forgiveness for his sinful lifestyle. The second man figures he’ll go out with a bang

and runs off to party. The third man says, “I shall finish the game.” That quote is

certainly open to interpretation, but to me it means you set yourself on a worthy

course, and you finish that course, no matter what. Tying it back to Spongebob –

you make it your mission to be a light in this dark world, and when everything

goes wrong and those around you start blaming, accusing, and trying to pull you

down, you remind them of the good and the beauty in this world, and you “finish

the game.”

Now that made me think of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Who, in John 13, knew exactly

what was going to happen to him. He knew his earthy ministry was nearly over

and he knew the fate that awaited him. He knew one of his own would betray him

and that he faced a cruel and painful death that he did not deserve. And what did

he do? He washed their feet and he finished the game.

John 13:1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had

come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who

were in the world, he loved them to the end.

Finish the game, my friends.

Bring Us An Ornament

Our HCoC Christmas tree and other

Christmas decorations will be put

up on the afternoon of Sunday,

December 1. We are asking that if

you have a family ornament from year’s past, please

bring it to put on the tree. This is a longstanding tradi-

tion in our church family but we need new ornaments

and more families to be represented! Please look

through your collection and bring one to Kaye Cottrell.

Sack the Pulpit

We are giving out bags today, along

with a list of what is to be purchased in

order to provide a Thanksgiving meal

for families in our community.

Remember, each bag has a family’s

name on it. If you take a bag, it is very important that

you return it so that we will be able to feed that

family. The bags are to be returned by next Sunday

morning, November 24 and placed on the stage. We

will gather that afternoon to distribute bags to families

we have a relationship with through our

House of Hope.
