PRESIDENT’S & GM’S MESSAGE

Dear Fellow members,

Gong Xi Fa cai! It is very rewarding to see the high level of activities at our club recently, both in sports and in social events. the tennis committee has been more active than ever, with a great junior tournament and of course the tennis clinic from two of our most famous Dutch tennis players, Jacco Eltingh and Paul haarhuis. We also had a great 70’s & 80’s party, where over 200 of our members relived their teenage memories, with some spectacular outfits involving tight jeans, leather and lots of hairspray. the movie and comedy nights also continued to be a big success and we will definitely continue with those in the coming year.

I would like to take this opportunity again to thank all those members who initiated and organized these memorable events, and I would like to encourage all members to continue to submit their ideas and step forward as a volunteer to help us organize these activities.

on the 14th of march we will be having our annual General meeting of members. this is an important event for the club, as the main committee will share the results of 2012 as well as our plans for 2013. It is also a good opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns and discuss the strategy of our club for the coming years. one of the agenda items at the upcoming aGm is the expansion of our club Rooms. We plan to build 7 additional hotel rooms on top of the current club Rooms, which means that we would replace our bowling facility. the existing club rooms have been very successful, and we belief the proposed expansion will give the club the necessary financial outcomes to return to a profitable situation again. I would like to encourage all members to attend the aGm to hear more about this project and other proposals by members and the main committee.

the coming months will be full of fun activities again. our serambi bar will among others host the celebration of st. Patrick’s Day and the hong kong 7’s, there will be various movies and comedy nights again, and a kids/teens disco will be held in april. We’re also looking forward to the celebrations around the crowning of Prince Willem alexander as king of the netherlands. We will be having a Queens Party in tropical style on 26 april. then on the 28th of april there will be a special Queens Day celebration for our kids. and on the 30th of april, we will be live streaming the ceremony around the crowning of our new king.

on a more serious note: In the past few months I have received a number of comments from you, our members. the comments are about the unauthorized use of the club’s facilities by non-members or members guests. It is important as a member of the club to know about the rules and regulations on inviting your guests to your club and its facilities. to guarantee the exclusivity of your hollandse club membership, visiting non-member guests will start to notice some tighter control measures. Examples are a new sign-in procedure for the keys of the squash courts, stricter control at the gate on cars without hollandse club stickers and the back entrance door will be closed. In case of questions, feel free to contact our membership department or myself to avoid unnecessary annoyances. Please kindly as of now have your guests registered at the reception so we can welcome them appropriately.

according to the chinese this year of the snake 2013 will bring rebirth and transformation. I look forward to joining you in this at our hollandse club.

at the moment most of you have just enjoyed a well-deserved break during the chinese new Year holidays. although the noise of the lion & dragon dance performances is still drumming through our ears we are working on exciting events ahead. our new Events Executive marjon Gijsman is working on new kids events like the exciting fire station visit, Easter brunch with egg hunt, kids & teens disco and a very special kids Queensday.

For the grown-ups like ourselves, we screen the Rugby hongkong 7’s live. We will also enjoy the always hilarious Jonathan atherton hosting the International comedy nights. then of course in april we have the “dress-up in orange” Queens day Party which this year will be even more special due to the abdication of Queen beatrix and the handover of the throne to king Willem alexander.

Recently the hollandse club organized one of her well known retro parties, this time based on the 70’s and 80’s. the hits from this era were perfect for dancing and many people took the “best Dressed competition” very seriously and looked as if they just ran out of one of these decades.

tUesDAy 30 APrilthe king’s speech

an introductionthis January Queen beatrix of the netherlands made her last official state visit before announcing her upcoming abdication. on april 30th of this year, for the first time in over a hundred years, the netherlands will have a king again: king Willem-alexander.

It seems not more than fair that Queen beatrix, after spending most of her life in the public eye, sitting through endless state functions, shaking hands and cutting ribbons, would be allowed some peace and quiet. after all, the official retirement age in the netherlands is 65 years; a birthday the Queen celebrated already ten years ago. however, this is not the main reason for beatrix to step down. In her abdication speech the queen mentions that her job is not too much of a strain at all, she simply feels it is time to hand over responsibility for the country to the next generation.

many non-Dutch find it strange for a queen to abdicate rather than stay on the throne until death, as is the custom in most countries. In the netherlands however, abdication has been a tradition for a long time: beatrix’ own mother Juliana stepped down in 1980, leaving beatrix enough time to spend with her family of 3 young sons before taking on the role of Queen in her early forties. beatrix has now done exactly the same for her son Willem-alexander, who will be 46 coming april. With his argentinian wife, princess máxima, the crown prince has 3 young daughters, the princesses amalia, alexia and ariane.

one off the countries that has been following the news of the Dutch queen’s abdication closely is, naturally, Great britain. Will Elizabeth be tempted to do the same as beatrix, and step down to make place for her eldest son, Prince charles? chances are, she won’t. there is an anecdote that when Queen Juliana called Queen Elizabeth in 1980 to tell about her planned abdication the british Queen slammed down the phone, angrily, muttering ‘typically Dutch’, and staying in a foul mood the rest of the day.

there are other differences between the house of Windsor and the house of orange. In most countries in Europe kings and Queens have a strictly ceremonial role, but in the netherlands the Queen has always been actively involved in politics. the netherlands are officially a constitutional monarchy, meaning that the position of the monarch is defined in the constitution, which states the monarch forms the government together with the cabinet. Even though the Queen’s political role has been diminished over the last few years, beatrix is known to take her role very seriously and is well informed about all goings-on in her country. she read all bills and laws she has to sign thoroughly, and speaks with the prime minister weekly, where she is known to be a though debating partner. beatrix is a highly professional, conscientious and spotless lady, who has made the house of orange one of the most popular royal families in Europe.

the new king, Willem-alexander, is expected to continue the tradition of political involvement, but also to be more focussed on the public relations part of the job. the prince that was formerly known as ‘Prins Pils’ (pils as in pilsener, the beer) has an outgoing character, much like his grandmother, former Queen Juliana, who was aptly named ‘the people’s queen’.

We will have to wait and see, and all eyes will be focused on the netherlands this april 30th, when beatrix abdicates and Willem-alexander will be king. april 30th 2013 will be the last ‘koninginnedag’, (Queensday), as from next year on ‘koningsdag’ (kingsday) will fall on april 27th, the birthday of the new king. so be sure to get your dates right if you want to fly over to join the mad orange-clad Dutch in their celebrations the coming years.

If amsterdam is a bit far you can join the celebrations in singapore at the hollandse club. the abdication of the Queen and subsequent installation of the new king can be seen at the club. From 4.00pm onwards, we will have live streaming and a wide range of Dutch food and beer!

QUeeN BeAtrix lAst stAte Visit, in singaporeWe in singapore had the honour of hosting the final state visit of Queen beatrix of the netherlands before her planned abdication in april this year. together with crown prince Willem-alexander and his wife máxima, beatrix visited our little red dot from January 23rd to 25th. the purpose of the visit was to further strengthen relations between the two countries, and to increase cooperation in fields of economics, and environmental and water management. the visit started with a welcome ceremony at the Istana, the official residence and office of singapore’s president tony tan keng Yam, and a state banquet held in the royal visitors honour. the royal party met with many representatives of both Dutch and singaporean companies, as well as visited the university and scientific centres, discussing singapore’s growing role as an economic hub and knowledge economy.

on the last day there was a reception to meet the Dutch community in singapore, and off course many members of our hollandse club were present. through the Embassy Dutch nationals could register, and a lucky 400 names were drawn, who were invited to the reception at the Fullerton bay hotel.

club member catelijne botterweck was one of the lucky draws. she tells us how she first saw the Queen: ‘It was during the so-called ‘passage’. a passage means that all attending guests form a long queue, and then they can shake hands with the queen, crown prince and princess. a dedicated person even calls out all the names and job functions of the guests. a heavy task for the Royal Family, shaking 400 hands.’

also present for the passage were members Jan Willem buist en sandra van campen: ‘We were told to come at least 30 minutes before the Queen arrived, and everyone was on time, no late comers. I guess everyone was excited indeed. after we had been waiting for quite a while in the main hall, we were ushered outside, to line up and re-enter in couples to be introduced to the Queen. It felt like stepping into a painting, as they look very familiar from all the pictures you have seen, but do not feel like ‘real life’ people. all three of them had large and warm smiles for each and every one of the 400 guests. Quite an achievement.’

as Events volunteer and former member of the main committee catelijne botterweck was invited by club president Robert Gorter to join the hollandse club ‘conversation table’ during the following reception. all these tables would be visited by one of the three royals for a brief chat. ‘after the passage, we had to go back inside, back to the conversation tables. the rest of the crowd stayed in the main area. It took quite a while before the crown prince arrived in our room, which contained 4 conversation tables. the crown prince very easily started nice conversations, and there was a lot of laughter. When he arrived at our table he asked the president of the club about how the club was doing.

the discussion then touched on a few subjects, such as the reasons why it’s getting more difficult to get new members, the benefits of the hollandse club, but also about expat developments within abn amro, the cold weather in holland, the quality of the ice, and even the mass hype of ice skating in holland. It was very special to have this kind of small talk with such an important person.’

Jan Willem and sandra were also invited to the evening program, a concert, and yet another reception: ‘this was a much more formal event with many singaporeans, executives of large corporates, trade associations and some members of the corps Diplomatique. We had another chance to be quite close, but again there was a lot of strict protocol around the Queen and the singaporean President, who was her guest of honour. You couldn’t just go and talk to her, so we tried to be as casual as possible. no staring was allowed! but I have to admit I was tempted…’

Even people who would not normally describe themselves as fervent royalists felt it was a rather special thing to meet the royal family. as Jan Willem recalls: ‘Especially the Queen and Princess maxima had such a charismatic presence, much more than we had expected. It was hard not to keep following them with your eyes.’

catelijne was also impressed: ‘It was amazing to see her so close and even shake her hand. all three of them looked friendly and interested and smiled very genuinely. I had a big smile on my face after the ‘passage’. During their conversation with the Embassy staff we were not supposed to mingle, so we just looked at them. It was great to see how relaxed they looked, smiling, talking, just like anyone else. Queen beatrix in real-life was even more sweet and friendly than I thought. I’ve only seen Queen beatrix on tv, giving a serious speech. now, she was relaxed. she’s quite short and actually, she looks like a very sweet grandma. Willem-alexander was even taller than I thought, and very normal, a ‘one of the guys’ type. Joking, laughing, asking questions. maxima is a beautiful lady, smiling and talking to all people.’

one of the first questions that comes to a lady’s mind when seeing royals is: what are they wearing? but when you are actually meeting them there is another, more stressful, one: what should you wear?

catelijne: ‘the protocol is quite old-fashioned in my opinion. For the men, it was easy, they had to wear a dark suit. Ladies are supposed to wear an ‘afternoon dress’. after a little research we agreed that this is a dress that is on or just over the knee, and ideally also covers the shoulders. Fortunately, I like to wear dresses, so I had a few options in my wardrobe. I did not wear stockings though; I reckoned that’s not necessary in this climate.’

sandra commented: ‘there was a strict dress code, but, being Dutch, there still was a very large variety in how the dress code was interpreted...’

Protocols around any royal family are very strict, and had to be followed during the day. they did not seem to ruin the atmosphere of the event though.

Jan Willem and sandra told us: ‘Despite the strict protocol and the high levels of security the atmosphere remained relaxed, and especially during the afternoon reception for the Dutch community there was quite a happy buzz!’

catelijne agreed: ‘the event was organized very well. there were a lot of protocols, and the communication language about it was quite old-fashioned to me. the atmosphere was a bit stiff in the beginning. In the queue towards the passage we had to be quiet, stand side by side, and I even felt a hand on my shoulder because I took one step too much.... but after the formal part it was very sociable en there was a typically Dutch, cosy, atmosphere.’

QUeeN BeAtrix Meets the hollandse school pupils

the youngest Dutch citizens of singapore also got a chance to meet the Queen, the crown prince and princess. the hollandse school (hsL) pupils were very exited to meet the royal family, but the school prepared them well for the event. caty (group 2a) told us she made a special drawing for the Queen, showing the colourful hsL school bus. the children had also been practicing the school song, which they would perform for the royal party.

on Friday afternoon all the pupils were driven in buses to Fusionopolis, where they would wait for the royal party to walk by. as antonia (group 6a) commented: ‘It was fun and a lot of waiting, but so exciting to see the Queen.’

Wim (group 6a) thought it ‘interesting and fun,’ and simon (group 6a) agreed it was ‘special, because you don’t see her everyday.’

the Queen and her family walked past long lines of children singing their school song out loud, dressed in their signature orange-white-blue school uniform, to show how they preserve their Dutch heritage in singapore’s multi-cultural environment. the Queen reacted very naturally to the warm musical welcome of the children, and afterwards took the time to chat with some of the children, asking about what it is like to be a pupil of the hsL. ‘they were so nice,’ one of the group 8 pupils commented, ‘they just asked questions to us like anyone else!’

children and staff alike were immensely impressed by the enthusiasm the royal party showed to the children’s presence, their singing performance and the presented drawings. as some other group 8 pupils said, it was a ‘very special occasion’ and ‘so exciting to see the Queen for the first time in our life’s’

the girls were particularly impressed by princess maxima, ‘Wow, she is sooooo beautiful,’ said nowah, (aged 7). sophie and saar (group 2a) also thought the princess looked beautiful, like a princess would. ‘she looked at us when we were singing the school song!’

Jolie (group 4c) shared a funny story: ‘Willem-alexander seemed to enjoy the school song, the children sang perfectly. he asked one of the teachers if he was the music instructor. the teacher denied, and the Prince responded ‘ahhh, I thought so, since you could get some pointers from them.’

Easter is regarded a christian holiday, that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus christ. For some, especially non-christians, this can be confusing. Where do the Easter bunny and all those coloured eggs fit in?

actually, Easter has more than one dimension. many more. In Europe, as in most of the world, all through history there have been celebrations to welcome spring back after a long and bleak winter. these were held when the spring equinox was crossed, in march, when the days would become longer than the nights. this is reflected in the origins of the English word Easter, which originates from Eastre, the anglo-saxon goddess of day and dawn. to confuse matters even more, many other languages (for instance the Dutch Pasen, the French Pâques) use derivations of the Jewish word Pesach, or Passover for Easter.

When Europe was christened it became a bit messy with all the new and old celebrations, christian as well as ‘heathen’, and it was decided to combine them into a new holiday: Easter. or Pasen. oster. Pâques. Pasqua. húsvéto. Pascuas. Påsk. the date was set on the sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox.

and from it’s different origins come the different traditions associated with Easter. and the good news is, there is something for everyone, so there is no reason to miss this great holiday. christians will probably choose to go to mass, but others will more likely spend it at home with family and friends.

What is the first thing everyone thinks about when they think about easter? Eggs, off course. Eggs are a classic symbol of spring, of fertility. In almost all countries eggs play centre stage in Easter celebrations. the resurrection of christ signifies renewal, and new life, as do eggs. Easter marks the end of the Lent period, in which the eating of eggs is not allowed. Yet another reason to feast on them for Easter.

In the netherlands hard-boiled eggs are painted, and the Paashaas (Easter hare, not bunny) will take them to hide them in the garden. From other eggs the raw content is blown and the shells are carefully painted and hung from branches of trees. but this is only one Easter tradition. Even in a small country like the netherlands there are many more. In the catholic southern part of the netherlands small buns are made in the shape of chicks, which are tied to sticks and carried by children at Palm sunday (the sunday before Easter). In the eastern part of the country bonfires are lit at sunset. church bells will not sound the days leading to Easter, as they are in mourning for Jesus. Folklore then says that the bells have flown to Rome, and will not return until Easter morning, carrying Easter eggs and chocolate. on Easter sunday a large family meal is eaten, often spring lamb, another symbol of new life.

When looking at Easter traditions across Europe modern borders fade away as they stretch from country to country. If we go east from the netherlands, to Germany, the bonfires remain popular. Germany also honours the old tradition of hanging eggs from branches of Easter trees. traditional Easter meals continue to include lamb, as we travel further to the east, into Eastern Europe. here as well, the painting of eggs stays a widespread tradition. but then some other, stranger traditions emerge, like in hungary where on Easter monday people splash (perfumed) water over each other. In the czech republic and slovakia girls are chased and whipped with twigs, which is believed to make them more beautiful. Further north, in scandinavia, things get macabre, and include halloween-like dressing up as witches, and going from door to door to collect candy. a more modern scandinavian tradition is reading crime novels at Easter.

If we skip back south, we will find a more catholic way of celebrating. In Rome, the pope delivers the ‘urbi et orbi’ and the Easter blessing. Processions fill the streets, where statues of the virgin mary and her son are carried round. although you won’t find too many Easter eggs, food is important, again lamb and goat meat, and special Easter breads like Pannetone. In Greece, they do paint their eggs, but only red. the red eggs are used to bake the traditional Easter bread. the spanish holy week, the week before Easter, is a solemn week full of catholic processions and celebrations. moving back north, via France, we start to come back to traditions we saw already in the Low countries: the Easter bells, chocolate and many, many eggs.

When we cross the channel to the british Isles, Easter traditions are fairly similar still. Eggs are painted, hidden in house and garden, and hunted for by kids. the Easter bunny might drop by, bringing eggs, nowadays mostly made of chocolate. In England hot cross buns, spicy raisin buns with a bright cross on top, were traditionally eaten on good Friday, but are now eaten all through the Easter period. In some area’s, especially the north of England, Ireland and scotland, fun games like Easter egg rolling down steep hills are played.

a lot of these European traditions got exported to the rest of the world. In north america Easter traditions are similar to these in britain, where in south america they are similar to those in southern Europe. In australia they made one, rather remarkable, change: the Easter bunny got changed into the Easter bilby. the bilby is a small and endangered local marsupial. understandably, as bunnies are not too popular Down under, since they eat the farmer’s crops and threaten indigenous wildlife.

In asia Easter, unlike a similar christian holiday like christmas, is not widely celebrated, apart from countries like the Philippines that have a large christian community. this could be because the less christian aspects of the feast, the celebration of the arrival of spring and the passing of the spring equinox, are already celebrated in other ways. For the chinese for example the lunar new year, one of the main events of the year, also celebrates new life and new beginnings. the three main symbols of Easter, the egg, bunny and baby chicken, have a similar significance in chinese culture as in Europe, and can be seen on many artworks around this period.

DiMitri VerhulstIn 1999, Dimitri verhulst (1972) officially debuted with the collection ‘De kamer hiernaast’. this was followed by ‘niets, niemand en redelijk stil’ (2001) and ‘De verveling van de keeper’ (2002). his novels ‘Problemski hotel’ (2003) and ‘De helaasheid der dingen’ (2006) were verhulst’s breakthrough with the public and have been translated into many different languages. De latter novel received the Gouden uil Public award (2007) and was adapted for the screen; the film was well received at various festivals and in different countries. the short story ‘mevrouw verona daalt de heuvel af’ (2006) was nominated for the ako Literatuurprijs (2007). subsequently he published ‘Godverdomse dagen op een godverdomse bol’ (2008), ‘De laatste liefde van mijn moeder’ (2010) and ‘De intrede van christus in brussel’ (2011).

aside from prose, verhulst writes poetry (‘Liefde, tenzij anders vermeld’ was nominated for the buddingh award), columns (for the Flemish daily De morgen) and plays (‘aalst’ (2005) has been performed in many countries all over the world, among others by the national theatre of schotland).

my name is Richard boer and I have been living in singapore for the past 8 years. I am married to Pauline chua, who is singaporean. We have a wonderful dog and her name is Lucie. I have worked for Philips Electronics as a software engineer for the past 16 years and have recently been transferred to tP vision making tvs for Europe and Latin america. I love my job and believe it or not, I have worked for the same company ever since I graduated from Delft technological university in 1996! You can pretty much guess my age! my wife is a special education teacher at the university hospital.

We have finally decided to join the hollandse club as we realized the importance of work life balance. the lush relaxing environment gives us the opportunity to get away from it all… We live pretty much in town and it can get very busy and congested these days. We enjoy lazing by the pool or simply hanging out at the terrace eating some some Dutch treats and perhaps my wife will pick some Dutch along the way.

STeINQ: can you introduce yourself (and you family) briefly? We’d like to hear where you are from, how long you have been in singapore, your names, kid’s ages, schools, work, or other interesting things about you.

We are a family of six and we are all living abroad for the first time, in singapore. Robert is working for caterpillar, in the mining industry, with an originally Dutch machine. he often travels to australia, India, and Indonesia, as well as the us. he sometimes takes his sketchbook with him. Robert is a keen musician, loves to sail and would like to try this in tropical waters.

Eva is a communication consultant and a homegrown family photographer. the children are Pier, 19, who is having a gap year and eager to go surfing in bali again, or australia. he is learning bahasa and loves to work out and run. soe, 18, is in GEss’s grade 11 and very much interested in art, on which she’ll write her essay. she is an experienced baby sitter, as well as marie, almost 16. she is in oFs’s grade 10 and discovering singapore with many new friends. charley is 12 and in oFs’s grade 7. all the girls play field hockey at scc’s team under 19.

Q: If you have recently moved to singapore, where were you before? how do you like singapore?For years we were longing to travel along with Robert, while living in the netherlands, in vught, near the city of Den bosch. moving to singapore went very fast, and we found a very nice place in hillcrest Park, with all shops and restaurants within walking distance. What we like about singapore is that we are living much closer as a family now, and we are spending more time together, as Robert’s travels appear to be much shorter. We enjoy the abundance of activities, the weather, and the food. and of course celebrating the new Year twice.

Q: What made you choose to join the hollandse club, what draw you to it?the hollandse club is a very obvious choice as we are Dutch, and it is close by our home. being ‘temp members’ for a period of time proved that we just love to come here and enjoy all facilities. We are looking forward to the celebration of Queen’s Day, particularly this year, going from Queen to king.

Q: What facilities and classes are you expecting to use a lot, or do already?already we like to come for a swim with the whole family at the end of the day. Eva has taken up swimming training, and we are looking forward to be able to use the library, the tennis court, and the gym. Pier is considering martial arts classes, charley went bowling. We like to join the regular movie nights and other parties. Perhaps other members are interested in starting a music band, with Robert on slide trombone or bass guitar and Pier singing?

Dear members,

We would like to highlight the rules with regards to the introduction of guests as described in the bye Laws in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the hollandse club: guests

a) a guest is any natural person, be it adult or child, who is not a member of the hollandse club.

b) Residents of singapore can be introduced only once a month to use the club’s sports facilities.

c) Persons, who are not residents of singapore, can be introduced for up to 14 (fourteen) days per calendar year to use the club’s sports facilities. the days do not have to be consecutive. the guest is to show proof of his/her latest date of arrival in singapore, which must not be more than 7 days earlier.

d) the maximum number of guests who can be introduced to make use of club’s sports facilities is 3 (three) per member per day.

e) Guests can be introduced to make use of the food and beverage outlets without any restriction.

f) Particulars of all guests should be entered in the guest book provided at the reception area.

g) the following fees are payable in respect of use of the club’s sports facilities including the swimming pool by all guests:- $2.50 per day on Weekdays per guest- $5.00 per day on saturdays, sundays and Public holidays per guest- an additional fee to make use of the Gymnasium. the Gymnasium usage Fee to be decided from time to time by the main committee – presently fixed at $20.00 per day per guest.- all fees will be charged to the member’s account. - no fee is payable for the usage of F&b outlets.- no fee is payable for use of puppy room, except for child minding.

to cite a few examples. John is not a member of the hollandse club and he has a few friends who are members of the club with whom he plays tennis on a regular basis. John can be introduced only once a month to play tennis at the hollandse club and the introducing member has to register his guest at the reception as a user of the tennis court. he will be charged $2.50 (on weekdays) or $5.00 (on weekends) to his account.

susan, a member, is introducing her neighbour kate with her two young children to the hollandse club to make use of the swimming pool. susan has to register her three guests at the reception as users of the swimming pool. she will be charged $7.50 (on weekdays) or $15.00 (on weekends) to her account.

both John and kate can not be introduced again by another member in the same month to make use of any of the club’s sports facilities. however, John and kate can be introduced to make use of the food and beverage outlets without any restriction.

starting from march, we are asking all the members to show their membership card and register their guests at the reception. If you have a friend who would like to make use of the club’s sports facilities more than once a month, please refer him/her to our membership department to become a member of the club.

on sunday, 13th January, we had the honor to welcome former Dutch professional male tennis players, Jacco Eltingh & Paul haarhuis. almost 100 of our members were able to enjoy a clinic from these two Dutch heroes and the savitar Group.

the event was quite a success! thanks to all the participants and members who joined us. It was great fun to watch the exhibition matches of Paul haarhuis and Jacco Eltingh.

on saturday 2nd February the first Junior’s tennis tournament of 2013 was played. 27 children competed in the categories: boys / Girls u6, u8, u10 and u12. after some tough and hard fighting matches the kids could cool down with some drinks, snacks and ice-cream. the winners went home with a nice trophy and the other participants enjoyed the lucky-draw. It was a great afternoon with a lot of fun! We hope to see you all again at our next tournament!

The year has started off well with good trainings and an exciting morning full of matches during our internal competition.

We are also participating in an external league for the first time, starting 23 February. each month there will be one Saturday morning with matches against local schools and some other clubs, either at CCAB, UWC or St Hilda’s secondary school.

squash reportafter the joys of the of the christmas holidays the esteemed members of the hollandse club squash team have been busy losing a few kilos and sharpening their skills in preparation for the national squash League, that started in the middle of February where we hope to have a repeat of 2011 and win something. We have managed to put out four teams this year putting priority into the veteran’s divisions, where we think we have a good chance of getting somewhere.

our nsL teams for the season:

the internal league is also helping to get people back onto the courts and we have certainly seen more interest from hollandse club members to participate. the internal leagues are spread across the ability spectrum and have been designed to ensure that everyone within the squash club gets the chance to play others of similar standard.

there are a few sectors that need some attention and those are the younger ones and the female fraternity. We do have lessons/sessions in place to cater for both and so if you feel that perhaps there is a spare moment in your child’s schedule on a saturday, then coach Yeo teaches the youngsters from noon to 2pm at very reasonable rates. the upside to the lessons are that your child is learning a game that involves skill, speed of thought and agility (although you wouldn’t know this if you watched some of our senior players) and even more importantly, it will exhaust them, giving you time to relax in the afternoon. What more could us parents ask for? For those ladies out there looking to take up a new sport or perhaps return to the sport after a few years of absence, then we have our ladies sessions/drills on a Wednesday evening. these are normally hosted by our charismatic canadian convenor who will certainly put you through your paces whilst at the same time teaching you the nuances of the game.

For the rest of you out there -- let me ask you -- would you prefer to sit down in front of the tv with a beer in your hand watching the football on a saturday afternoon, or would you rather invigorate your life, have a goal to work towards that will almost certainly cause you a great deal of sweat and pain but will leave you feeling a better person (metaphorically speaking of course). then, of course you can sit down after the squash with some unique friends and drink that beer and watch that football but feel so much better about it! so why not make the effort and come down to the squash courts saturday afternoons after 2 p.m. and give it a go. We also have drills on tuesday evenings and social sessions on thursday evenings.

In the coming months, we will be holding the internal competition, so if you do have any interest then please make sure you put your name down.

as a foot note – the club has recently spent a great deal of money polishing the floors of the courts because there have been people playing on the courts with standard trainers rather than specific indoor non marking shoes. In an attempt to combat this, the courts will be locked and those using them will have to sign out keys from Reception. this way we can track any changes that occur to the courts. there are also signs detailing the types of shoes allowed. Please take note, and play responsibly on our courts.
