Wash Away My Guilt Have mercy on me, God, in Your goodness;

in the greatness of Your compassion wipe out my offence.

Thoroughly wash me from my guilt;

and of my sin cleanse me. - Psalm 51:3-4

Everyone makes mistakes. “To err is human” we say. We try to fit into the

crowd, and in our efforts often hurt the ones we love the most. We do our

best to make a living for our family, and in the process sometimes go

against our own ethics. We try to be faithful to our religious beliefs, and

along the way belittle and degrade others.

Psalm 51 is often prayed in the monasteries every day at noon. Monks and

nuns who keep silent during their day are still aware that a misplaced

glance, a grimace or an ill-conceived whisper can offend those in their

midst. At the end of Psalm 51, some communities move to the center

aisle, bow to each other and then bow to the Lord in the Blessed

Sacrament on the altar. As the Lord is in the tabernacle, so also does He

live in the souls of our brothers and sisters in Christ-present in one another.

Our job as Christians is not to develop our own moral plan that will make

us sinless. Rather, we are to acknowledge our weaknesses and to believe

that the Lord can use even our annoying foibles and mistakes for God’s

honour and glory.

Suggestion: During the midst of your day, ask God to wash away any hurt

that you may have caused others. Be peaceful, knowing that God is

willing to forgive our past sins, errors and transgressions - to bless us and

give us His peace so that we may be ‘get back on track.’

COMMEMORATION OF SAINT

GREGORY PALAMAS - MARCH 16

The Second Sunday of Lent is kept as a feast of Saint Gregory Palamas, the Archbishop of Thessaloniki in the fourteenth century. Like the restoration of the holy icons, this memorial of Saint Gregory has to do with historical events, but also relates to our understanding of the Christian vocation, and the possibility for every Christian to achieve genuine holiness. Saint Gregory taught that all Christians are called to union with God, which is the object of the Christian life. Saint Gregory was a great ascetic, and a great master of the monastic life, but he taught that this

invitation to union with God is open to every Christian. This is the challenge of Lent, but that challenge faces us all year round. Likewise this is the challenge of monasticism, but not just for the monks and nuns. The Holy Father has expressed it very well: “…in the East, monasticism was not seen merely as a separate condition, proper to a precise category of Christians, but rather as a reference point for all the baptized, according to the gifts offered to each by the Lord; it was presented as a symbolic synthesis of Christianity.” (Pope John Paul II, Orientale Lumen, 9)

A reference point and a synthesis. The monks and nuns must always remember that in this way they are responsible to and for the whole Christian people, and all of us should seek to nourish our Christian lives with the values which the monastics particularly exemplify.

Saint Gregory Palamas himself has enjoyed an increasing popularity in the past fifty years or so. His spiritual theology is not absolutely binding, but he is an important and influential figure in patristic spirituality. At one time, Saint Gregory’s ideas were highly controversial, and his memorial was removed from our liturgical books after the Synod of Zamost’. But with the recent profound studies of Saint Gregory, and the deeper appreciation of the Christian East, the Holy See restored Saint Gregory’s memorial on the Second Sunday of Great Lent in the Anthologion published by the Oriental Congregation. Our own Patriarch Joseph Cardinal Slipyj made a strong and positive contribution to this restoration of Saint Gregory Palamas to Catholic liturgical practice… the new English translation of the Lenten Triodion contains the full service to St. Gregory Palamas, and … this will increase our understanding of our spiritual and theological tradition.

Seeing Your Holy Cross exposed on this day, O Lord, we come forward faithfully kissing it in fear and in joy to the sound of our songs and hymns. Sanctify Your servants, and give peace to the world by the power of Your Precious Cross, O God of tenderness. (Matins for Cross-Veneration Thursday: Sessional Hymn) How often have we gazed upon the life-giving Cross and have given thanks to the Lord Jesus for all that He has suffered, patiently endured, and offered for each of us? How often do we praise Him for all the blessings we have received; for life, health, strength; for home, love, and friendship; for the happiness of our success and for prosperity? The majority of us would most probably respond in the affirmative, for how could we not appreciate the gifts of salvation He has so generously bestowed upon us!

But how often do we render thanks for the crosses that beset us daily—for the discipline of trials and temptations? When wrongs and injustices sadden our hearts, do “we come forward faithfully kissing it,” not only in fear, but in joy and with love? During the times when we become overly burdened and deeply conscious of our own shortcomings, is our tendency to despair and discouragement? Or do we come

before the redeeming Cross of Jesus, acknowledging our failings, praying for His forgiveness and for the forgiveness of those whom we have wronged or offended? Each of us has suffered severe trials, either from others, or as a result of our own limitations and sinfulness. We could chose to let these daily crosses embitter our spirits and shatter our trust in the Lord. These crosses could be viewed and experienced as “punishments” from God, as burdens too heavy to bear, and weights that bend and break our spirit. Or we can chose to accept them as opportunities leading to the New Life. We should meditate upon the holy icon of the crucifixion, firmly believing that everything Jesus does is for our own best interests. We can turn to the life-giving Cross and find strength to meet adversity with quiet courage and unshaken trust. We can come to believe that although weeping may indeed tarry for the night, joy shall return in the morning. Especially during this sacred season of the Holy Forty-Days Fast, may we truly believe that He is our Protector and our Saviour in every trial and peril and that His mercy is extended to us with loving kindness which will never fail. May we accept and embrace each cross as a mini-death of our old self and as a stepping stone to the New Life—the Life in Christ Jesus achieved through His Radiant Resurrection.

To Your Cross, O Master, we bow in veneration, and we glorify Your holy Resurrection!
