My dear parishioners,
I hope this letter finds you well and longing for the days of spring that will come
soon. As we get closer to Lent (Ash Wednesday is February 26) and as we think of
where we have been and where we hope to go, I feel it is a good time to have a
conversation about death. It is a subject we usually do not like to discuss, but death is a
very natural part of life. The Roman Catholic Church has a book called Order of
Christian Funerals. This book gives the priest instruction on how the wake,
funeral Mass and graveside services are to be conducted. It is not a book of mere
suggestions, but instructions to be followed. The priest is servant to the Liturgy, not the
Liturgy servant to the priest. Through the celebration of the funeral rites, the Church
manifests its care for the dead, and the living members.
As your pastor, I sit with every family and take notes on the deceased and include
them in my homily. The family picks readings, songs, and who will present the gifts at
the offertory. In planning and carrying out the funeral rites, I try to keep in mind the life of
the deceased and the circumstances of death. I also take into consideration the spiritual
and psychological needs of the family.
A brief homily based on the readings is always given after the Gospel, but there is
never to be a eulogy (#27). Attentive to the grief of those present, I try to dwell on God’s
compassionate love on all present and on the Paschal Mystery of the Lord. The funeral
home or repast allows the perfect place and time for a eulogy. This is not my rule, but
the rule of the Church.
Music is integral to the funeral rites. It allows the community to express
convictions and feelings that words alone may fail to convey. It has the power to
console and uplift the mourners and to strengthen the unity of the assembly in faith and
love. The texts of the songs chosen for a particular celebration should express the
Paschal Mystery of the Lord’s suffering, Death, and triumph over death and should be
related to the readings from Scripture.
Holy water reminds the assembly of the saving waters of Baptism. Incense is
used during the funeral rites as a sign of honor to the body of the deceased, which
through Baptism became a temple of the Holy Spirit. Incense is also used as a sign of
the community’s prayers for the deceased rising to the throne of God and as a sign of
farewell.
A body is always buried, so should the ashes of a loved one who is cremated.
Ashes are not to be divided up among family members, encased in jewelry, or scattered
over the sea. Ashes are shown the same respect as a body, so they should be buried or
interred.
The priest has the option of what color to wear for the funeral Mass. The liturgical
color chosen for funerals should express Christian hope, but should not be offensive to
human grief or sorrow. In the USA, white, violet, or black vestments may be worn at
funerals and Masses for the dead. I wore black vestments for my uncle’s funeral in
December, since his death was so sudden and tragic.
I encourage all of you to speak of your last wishes with your loved ones. This
would be helpful to them and you can stress what you want and desire. If you ever have
any questions, please feel free to contact me here at Holy Spirit rectory.
