The Diocese of Cleveland Respect Life Sunday

The Diocese of Cleveland will mark Respect Life Sunday with a special Mass for those who have suffered miscarriage, infertility or neo-natal death Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 5:30 pm at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, East 9th Street and Superior Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio. May the God of all comfort and compassion provide strength and hope for those who grieve.

“If anyone should cause one of these little ones to lose his faith in me, it would be better for that per-son to have a large millstone tied around his neck and be thrown into the sea…”

Addressing Violence in our Neighborhoods Our next Town Hall Meeting

Sunday, October 14, 2018 After the 10:15 am Mass

A small committee of parishioners (Patricia Douglas, Deacon Ron James, Kathy Ewing, Jewel Jones, Stacey Collier, and Fr David) met to discuss ideas that were generated from our last Town Hall meeting on this subject and to plan next steps.

The committee has come up with some seminal ideas that they want to share with the parish community at a Town Hall meeting on October 14 after the 10:15 am Mass. The ideas are not completely fleshed-out because the committee wants to hear from our community in the hope that as we spell out details together we will achieve as high a degree of buy-in as possible as we decide on next steps.

Please save time for this Town Hall meeting.

Wednesday, October 3, 2018 The Passing of Saint Francis of Assisi

The Feast of Saint Francis (October 4) is an important day in the world of Capuchins and all Franciscans. Saint Francis died the evening of October 3 — and Franciscans all over the world have a tradition of commemorating Francis’

passing from this life to the next on that evening. We often refer to it by its latin name: Transitus.

All of the Capuchin friars in the Cleveland area will be gathering that evening (7:00 pm) at the Shrine of the Conversion of Saint Paul (E. 40th Street and Euclid Avenue) to celebrate the Transitus.

For that reason, we will not have Mass that evening at Holy Spirit Church, and the regular Wednesday adult choir rehearsal is cancelled. Mr. David Williams will direct the music that evening, and we are inviting as many choir members as are able to join him. All members of our parish are invited to come to Saint Paul Shrine to celebrate with the Capuchin friars and the Poor Clare Sisters.

It is our pleasure to invite you to celebrate this ceremony with us. You are welcome. Please come.

Walk to Remember Catholic Cemeteries Association

On Sunday, October 7 — the beginning of the month of the rosary — the Catholic Cemeteries Association is hosting a Walk to Remember event at several cemeteries, the event will last no more than one hour. Participants will pray the rosary together while walking. For those who have difficulty walking, the rosary will be prayed at the same time while seated in a mausoleum. Registration is recommended. To register or to ask for more information, visit:

https://www.clecem.org/Events/WalkToRemember.aspx

The rosary begins at the following cemeteries next Sunday at 1:00 pm: All Saints Cemetery, Northfield; All Souls Cemetery, Chardon; Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland; Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron; Holy Cross Cemetery, Brook Park; and Saint Joseph Cemetery, Avon.

Health Council

The parish’s Health Council is entering a phase of discern-ment and reorientation. Due to a lack of participation, Friday night line dancing has already been cancelled for some time. Weekly Walks in the Park are also now suspended. The Health Fair earlier this month was poorly attended. The council wants to regroup and begin again in small and simple ways. Keep an eye out here for announcements of new initi-atives by the council. The members of the council are deep-ly committed to being of service to the good health of our parishioners and our neighbors.

Building Projects at Holy Spirit Church

An Update

Several projects are underway at this time and are slowly moving toward completion.

1. Parking lot repairs and resealing. Two sections of the lot have undergone repair and the rest of the lot has been resealed and lines repainted. A few trouble spots have been identified which may require more extensive sectional replacement in the future.

2. Heating system in the church. The Smith and Oby Company has been working on changing the way heat is delivered throughout the church from an antiquated pneumatic system that no one wants to repair, to an electronic system. When this project is complete, we expect to have reliable heat in the church throughout the cold season.

3. Boiler in the school. With a tenant in the school building the parish is required to replace a secondary boiler which had become irreparable. The installation of a new boiler is nearing completion.

4. Roofs. The flat roof over the chapel in church has been replaced. Bishop Perez has been asked to give his permission for us to replace two other flat roofs on the church: the one over the sacristy and the one over the choir room. The leak in the parish center roof is scheduled for repair this week.

5. Exterior lighting. The many fixtures that are not functioning will be replaced with LED lights, and as other fixtures fail they will be similarly replaced. That work may not begin for several weeks, but we are on the schedule. Once complete, we should all be able to notice a significant difference in the parking lot after dark.

6. Church carpeting. We have set a goal to have new carpeting in the sanctuary before Christmas, ideally before the beginning of Advent.

We are able to undertake these significant expenditures because of the selfless generosity of our parish community and your love for your church and church community. Once these projects are complete, we will put into place mechanisms to pay closer attention to ongoing maintenance to make these repairs last for a long time. And then we can turn our attention to rebuilding our investment portfolio to prepare for the next rainy-day need.
