… from your Pastor’s Desk :

What Can We Do To Help?

As I write this, Friday morning, at least 15 of our parishioners have lost their homes. And that number will Increase. For privacy purposes, I will not mention their names in this communication.

As you know, none of our buildings or any church property were effected. But that does not mean damage was not done.

Buildings are just that, buildings. They can be repaired or replaced. And although in those 15 houses many or all tangible family treasures and physical reminders of memories were destroyed, the memories remain. And we will help them re-build. After all, they did not only lose houses – they lost their homes.

If, as you read this, you feel like you are still in shock, you very well might be. Catastrophic events have many consequenc-es. Certainly for those 15 + households that I mentioned, but also for all those who, in the early morning hours, in darkness, faced the terror of immediate evacuation with flames on the horizon. Twice.

I’ve heard so many people say ‘Our prayers and thoughts go with you’. Thoughts are nice, prayers are powerful, and for some of us that is all we can offer. But for the rest of us, there is more we can do.

The trauma of these last few weeks can take a great toll on us, to be sure, but even more so our little ones, many of whom were grabbed from sleep and rushed into a car while smoke surrounded them and multiple sirens blared as exploding pro-pane tanks, transformers and car gas tanks echoed all around them. Memories now. Sad, but still very real ones. They need our love and attention now more than ever. Many of our people are grieving. Support and outreach to those suffer-ing is essential and there are agencies, including the Churches, which are organizing to be available for those who will suffer and live with this grief for a long time.

I have not spoken to all of you, but as far as I can tell, we had no fatalities. And, I do not know how many of you lost yours businesses or place of employment. A recent count has more than 6,700 distinct buildings destroyed. As many as 4,000 of them homes. I also hear that as many as 22 wineries were destroyed. Many people from Sonoma and Napa Counties will be without work. I do know that some of you lost your source of salary. And I do know that several of our schools are com-pletely shut down [Cardinal Newman and St. Rose].

The toll on families is not yet known. In times like these we realize that we ARE part of a greater community and that our rebuilding efforts, although starting here – will be reaching outward to the wider Catholic Community and beyond.

Yesterday our Bishop, per his invitation, met at the chancery [which had been closed due to being in an evacuation area until just the day before] with all the Sonoma Country priests. Some, like us, were right in the midst of it, some - not effected at all. He wanted to hear our stories and check on our people and the needs of our various communities. We worked hard to come up with a plan. It is important to not duplicate secular agency services but to reach to particular needs of particular parishes, their members and other Catholic agencies. Many parishes are having FEMA representatives after all the masses this weekend. Catholic Charities is taking the lead on helping those in most need and we can refer any-one to them.

Here is what our Bishop writes on this: “Coordination with and through Catholic Charities of Santa Rosa will be important. Saint Vincent DePaul also has a strong presence in the area and pastors have been connected with this great Catholic Organization as well. In this work it must be recognized that no single agency or organization, even FEMA, can singlehandedly deal with the enormity of the challenges faced by the fire affected areas. We will do what we can but must also humbly recognize that we cannot do it all”

I have received numerus requests of where people can donate clothes or food. I have also heard from parishes from other diocese even from out of state offering to send what might be needed.

Both Saint Vincent de Paul and Catholic Charities have said they have enough clothes at the moment. In fact, they are run-ning out of storage space for them. What they do need is monetary donations so they can adapt to the changing and spe-

OUR ALTAR FLOWERS this week are in

celebration of Dino and Paula Alden’s

Wedding Anniversary.

Please pray for the soul of Patricia Steele’s mother,

Geanne Vandeberghe who passed away on Saturday.

Eternal rest grand unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light

shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed,

through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.

Amen

Personally, I do thank you for your prayers and concern for me. Particularly Dennis and Lynn DeCota, Gil and Margie DeMeo and Chad and Michelle Davis who opened their homes to me during the two evacuations. I also thank you who will open your homes to those displaced.

I end with a quote from our Bishop; “There has been a great outpouring of support and encouragement and I find that I must now appeal in a more direct way for the extension of a helping hand. I pray that God blesses you for your prayers and support. The chal-lenges ahead of us are great and you are needed.” Indeed,

Father Ron
