Hougang StationSod Cafe

A cafe in the heartland that serves both decent and affordable cafe food fare that would not burn a hole in your pocket:)# : 51 Hougang Avenue 9 #01-03, Ci Yuan Community Centre$ : Alight at Hougang Station Exit C (16 min walk from mrt torestaurant). Alternatively, take bus 6N, 72, 72A, 109, 112 and stop atbus stop B64471 (1 min walk from bus stop to restaurant)% : Glazed Chicken Wings (priced $7.90), Pinky Snapper Fish & Chips(priced $13.80), Chicken Supreme (priced $9.50) and Sod Milk Tea withpearls (priced $4.50)& : The glazed wings were crispy on the edges and the meat wastender inside, except that the wings were more of sweet and savouryas they were glazed with orange and honey. I especially love the fish &chips as the snapper fillet meat was fresh and sweet, like it did nottaste like those frozen fish fillet kinds. Besides, there were more fishmeat instead of a lot tempura batter so definitely worth your money' Special mention to the homemade coleslaw that came with the fishwhich was good! The chicken from the chicken supreme was tenderand went well with the special cheese and tomato sauce. The sod milktea was a little different from the usual milk tea @ KOI/Gong Chawhere there was a strong tea taste. The sod milk tea had more of aherbal tea taste which I guess it was because of the aspalathuslinearis in their tea which contains a lot of important antioxidants thatare good for our body and health:) Will be back again for their valuefor money cafe food + cozy ambience that is great for chilling out withfriends!

Looks like the bingsu craze is not over yet! Korean Bingsu is a dessertthat everyone is likely to love, and Nunsongyee is probably one of myfavourites with its smooth and milky bingsu.# : 45 Burghley Drive #01-04% : Injeolmi Bingsu (priced $14.90) and Black Sesame Bingsu (priced$18.90) $ : Serangoon Station Exit B/E/F/G/H --> Take bus 317 from theSerangoon bus interchange.& : Nunsongyee is located within Burghley Lifestyle Hub, which has acolourful exterior and can be easily spotted from far. Its Injeolmi Toast(priced $8.90) was also a satisfying treat of crispy toast topped withbean powder and chewy rice cake in between. The black sesamebingsu was really fragrant with the black sesame and toasted almondsthat gave the bingsu a crunchier texture. What I love is that there aretoasted almonds within the layers of shaved ice so you would not bejust eating ice only. 2. Arbite

Time for more cafe hopping adventures ()# : 66A Serangoon Garden Way (Above Guardian)$ : Serangoon Station Exit B/E/F/G/H --> take bus 315/317 & alight atSerangoon Garden Circus bus stop% : Salted Egg Yolk Fries (priced $8), Express Lunch-Sesame Chicken whoney ($9.90++), Mac & Cheese (priced $16), Flower Power - ElderFlower Specialty Drink (priced $5), Lychee & Mint Arbite Freeze (priced$8)& : The salted egg yolk fries was DA BOMB as they were fried withthick salted egg sauce & curry leaves, making the fries really fragrant,both salty & slightly sweet combi:) We love that the express lunch waspocket-friendly as it is served with a soup and drink as well for$9.90++ and what's good is that you can change your drink to otherspecialty drinks and just top up the difference:) The Mac & Cheese wasa unique twist from the usual Mac & Cheese with herbedbreadcrumbs on the top layer which added a crunchier and crispiertexture to the dish. % : Truffle Fries (priced $14.90), Soft Shell Crab burger (priced $22.50)and Berry Ricotta Hotcakes (priced $18.90)& : I love the homemade aioli dip that came with the truffle fries as itpaired really well with the cheese and truffle fries. I got a little shockwhen I saw the soft shell crab was a mini whole crab. It was crispy andthe best part of soft shell crab is that you can just pop it in your mouthwithout bothering much about the shells to spit out. The wasabi sauceand avocado tasted really good with the soft shell crab. Last but notleast the highlight was the Berry Ricotta Hotcakes. The Hotcakes wasfluffy and fragrant together with the fruits, lavender sugar crystals,lavender flowers and sunflower seeds! We recommend that you sharethe Hotcakes as its quite full on its own. Fans of DOTS (Descendants Of The Sun) would be excited to hear thatthey can meet their oppa, captain Yoo Si Jin and be in Kang Mo Yeon'sshoes (Just a life-sized picture though HAHA). Their star item is thegalmaegisal (pork skirt meat), which is juicy and tender when grillednicely. Cheese can be ordered at an extra $2 to go with the grilledmeat, however it does get burnt quickly when placed at the sides ofthe grill, so you have to be quick to get the perfect cheesy texture!# : Plaza Singapura #02-01$ : Dhoby Ghaut Station Exit D% : Galmaegisal (priced $21.90) and Kimchi Fried Rice in bento box(not sure if it is still available) & : We ordered the galmaegisal and hangjeongsal (pork neck). Thetrick was to constantly flip the meat to prevent blackening (chao da). Itcame with free flow of egg, which was silky and tasted really nicewhen slightly burnt at the sides. However, the grill itself was reallywarm, and we could constantly feel the heat from just sitting across it.They do offer really good service, as different grills were provided forthe two meats we ordered, and the staff can help you grill the meat ifrequested. 3. The vegetables placed on top of the dish made me feel like reallyhealthy, probably because the vegetables were really fresh and tastedrather raw. Here's an another place that offers Korean food at nett prices (withoutGST or service charge), with a homely setting together with Koreanmusic playing softly in the background, right in town!# : 2 Handy Road #B1-23 The Cathay$ : Dhoby Ghaut Station Exit A/E/F% : Army Base Stew (Budae Jjigae) (priced $13.90)& : What I liked was that the army base stew came in the serving forone, which worked out well because you can order more items toshare. We ordered the army base stew and chicken bulgogi for two toshare, and each came with four complimentary side dishes. The armybase stew arrived bubbling at the surface, and had generousingredients of sausage, spam, rice cake slices, kimchi, goldenmushrooms, tofu etc., with instant ramyeon noodles, a slice of cheeseand baked beans. It was not too spicy for a person who has lowtolerance for spicy food like me, and the stew went really well with thevarious ingredients. I especially liked the chewy rice cake slices.Ajumma's also has other main dishes such as stews and rice sets, buttheir desserts are worth a try as well. The hotteok pancakes had aslightly sweet filling and the crispy skin was not too oily. Overall,Ajumma's offers yummy Korean food at prices that are not toodamaging to the pocket. 5. Sweet Monster

However, the popcorn is not your usual crunchy one, as it has asofter and more chewy texture to it. A good match with the vanilla softserve, although it may not taste as well on its own. A cosy cafe nestled in the vicinity of Clarke Quay, it is easy to miss itsentrance, but it offers an ideal place to chill and enjoy a delightfulmeal if you manage to find it. Together with the salt-baked eggand baked potato topped with sour cream, the meatiness of the dishwas balanced nicely. I felt that the salt-baked egg simply tasted likehard-boiled egg, but with a slightly crumply texture. There seems to bea new dish of honey butter chicken, which sounds rather appealing tome . A secret spot located at the rooftop of People's Park Complex. Craving for some authentic French crepes? The Daily Roundup @ TheWorking Capitol serves both sweet crepes and savoury galettes, whichare similar to those that we had in France. What's more, they arevastly different from the usual brunch items that you get at mostcafes.# : 1 Keong Saik Road, The Working Capitol$ : Outram Park Station Exit G/H% : Earl Grey Passionfruit Iced Tea (priced $8 each), Salted Caramel(priced $12), Smoked Salmon (priced $18) and Burrata (priced $18)& : We preferred the sweet crepe (Salted Caramel) over the savouryones, reason being that the savoury galette reminded us of a tastewhich resembled the Indian Thosai, instead of a crepe. For those whohave a sweet tooth, the salted caramel crepe left us wanting for moreas the crepe was both chewy and crispy at some parts. Cheese loverswould love the savoury galettes. We especially love the combination ofthe burrata cheese with pesto and the fresh salad. The drinks werepretty amazing too! The blend of earl grey and passionfruit was astrong, flavourful and refreshing one. We would love it more if thecosts could be cheaper haha. A pretty Korean cafe that is famous for its equally pretty desserts anddrinks.# : 26 Keong Saik Road$ : Outram Park Station Exit H% : Som Som Latte Iced (priced $7.00 each)& : The Som Som Latte Iced was a refreshing treat in the swelteringheat of Singapore, and makes for a good photo as well. The cottoncandy was freshly spun upon ordering, and tastes just as good as itlooks. 3. The Populus Coffee & Food Co.

Another cafe to add to the list at the Outram Park area! It's oppositethe Pinnacle @ Duxton.# : 146 Neil Road$ : Outram Park Station Exit G% : Dark Chocolate Sundae (priced $14), The Populus Scramble (priced$18), Spring Pancake & Chicken (priced $21) and Roasted Cod & SobaNoodle Salad (priced $21.50) & : The dark chocolate sundae was a perfect remedy to quell the hotweather! The sundae came with hazelnut crunch, honeycomb,chocolate crunch, raspberry puree and a generous douse ofpassionfruit sauce all over. All the flavours came together nicely togive a bittersweet and tangy taste, leaving a refreshing aftertaste. Theice cream was really rich in taste, and didn't melt that quickly so youcan fret less about having it melt while you take that perfect shot ofyour sundae! There were cut up bits of sponge cake/bread at the verybottom of the bowl, giving it a more pastry taste towards the end. ThePopulus Scramble was a relatively huge portion and wouldrecommend small eaters to share. The scramble egg was smooth,creamy and soft which went really well with the toasted croissant. Iespecially love the Spring Pancake & Chicken. The spring pancake withcorn was crispy and fragrant and was a good combination with thetender and juicy fried chicken thigh fillet. Special mention to the housespecial ranch dressing which was DA BOMB... mild spicy andtangy...one word SHIOK. The roasted cod was fresh and roasted whilemaintaining most of the juiciness of the cod. However, the lime andsesame dressing tasted a little too much citrus flavouring and tasted alittle similar to the mosquito repellent, maybe more sesame dressingcould be added to balance the citrus taste.

What's unique about this cafe is that the cakes andpastries can be paired with a range of Chinese teas.# : Kreta Ayer Road$ : Outram Park Station Exit H. Walk straight down and turn right intoKreta Ayer Road% : Earl Grey & Caramel Cookie Choux Pastry (priced $5.90 and $6.50respectively)& : We had Fenghuang Dancong and Shuixian, which were really toour liking. The Fenghuang Dancong has a fruity flavour while theShuixian resembles traditional Chinese tea.

Theyalso have noodle dishes.# : Vivocity #02-125$ : HarbourFront Station C/E% : Teriyaki Chicken Bibimbap (priced $8.50)& : At a first glance, all you can see is likely to be vegetables andshredded seaweed, but rest assured that when you mix it all up (theyprovide gochujang as well!), you will find that the teriyaki chicken bitsare all hidden within the rice. There was also crunchy crumbs thatgave the dish an extra texture and 'yum'. Sides of a small dish ofpickled radish kimchi and a bowl of seaweed soup are provided witheach main dish.
