most of the talking is be-tween the charter boats, although the charters use the cell phones a lot, and talk is serious. When the weekend ar-rives, the radio if full of nonsense. People yell-ing at each other, tell-ing jokes and just plain chit-chat. It is annoying, to say the least. These folks are also “Sharing” information with oth-ers, for what it is worth. “What did you catch that salmon on”? “We were using flies & flashers.” “What color”? “Green on Green”.

Wel l that te l ls you NOTHING. Head for the tackle shop & look for a green flasher and a green fly………Good luck. You will find at least 30 – 40 combinations of green flashers. With respect to the green fly…………….there will be another 30 – 40 different green flies, all just a little bit differ-ent than the other.

The other interesting thing is that it seems that you never hear of any two people catching fish with the same baits. Too many choices.

Well, the “Hot” flasher this year was the E-Chip “Goldfinger”. One side gold and the other, ½ & ½ bright green & bright gold. Now that you have the flasher, what to put behind it? We ran the original “Hammer” fly & did quite well.

For some reason or an-other, we had our best luck during the first hour of each day. After that, it was a long time between fish. We were joking about going out for an hour and then heading for camp to take a nap.

I had stated earlier that we had invested in one of the new “Fish Hawk” speed & temperature units and that was a valuable asset this year out there. What wind we did have certainly blew the water around & changed the fishing tremendously. The first few days we were there we had to go way out to water that was 300 feet deep to get any good temperature. All the water in closer was too

Dave with 1st King Salmon of our 2013 trip and a personal best at 28 lbs.

I think our total time on the water (including travel time) that morn-ing was just over an hour and a half. We no sooner set lines than we had a fish on. Got that one in & settled back down and the second rod went off. We were back to the dock with our 2 fish, well be-fore 10:00 AM and they weighed in at 24 & 25 lbs. What a GREAT way to end the trip.

warm. The only problem with that was that I only had 180 feet of cable on my downriggers & really couldn’t get down into the cold waters. A couple of times we were out so far that we could see the bottom of the cable spool. However, that did change over the next few days and we were able to fish the shallower waters.

As a rule, we travel on Saturdays, going out & coming home, but try to get in a couple of hours on the Friday morning prior to departure. After that short jaunt, we pull the boats out & pack them up for traveling home the next day.

This year, I had de-cided to fish until 10:00 AM or 2 fish, whichever came first. It was a ½ hour ride OUT to where we wanted to fish and a ½ hour ride back in.

When Replacing a baThTub

by Tim CarterSyndicated Columnist

DEAR TIM: My hus-band and I are doing a bathroom remodel. The biggest change is the bathtub. The builder put in a smallish tub, and I’m now going with a luxuri-ous soaking tub. Our house is on a slab. Are the tub drain holes, the one at the bottom and the one higher up, the same size on tubs? How can I be sure the new tub will line up with the old? What is the size of the tub drain pipe, or is that not an issue? What else do I need to know about to ensure the new tub is in-stalled correctly? --Kathy R., Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

DEAR KATHY: Well, you’ve come to the right place! I’ve been a master plumber, among other things, for about 35 years. As you might suspect, I’ve installed new tubs, relo-cated existing ones and repaired leaking ones more times than I care to remember. If you’ve got a top-notch remodeler on board who uses a great plumber, you’ll have no problems.

I can understand your

Replacing a smaller tub with a larger soaking tub should be no problem for an experienced plumber.

anxiety. If you’re like the average person, you’ve never seen the piping that’s connected to bath-tubs. Many years ago it was common for the tub to back up to a closet wall in another room or even to a bathroom pantry with an inspection panel that could be removed to gain access to the tub and shower valve.

This panel also allowed you to see the very fasci-nating waste and overflow pipes that connected to the bathtub drain and the overflow hole higher up on the tub. These pipes, if you just view them on their own, resemble the letter L with a tiny stub

pipe that comes out of the bottom of the vertical pipe that is connected to the overflow hole high up on the tub.

These waste and over-flow pipes are commonly 1 1/2-inch diameter tu-bular piping. Many are made of solid brass, al-though less expensive PVC kits can be pur-chased. The kits are de-signed with compression nut fittings that allow the parts to fit a wide variety of tubs.

The pipes that con-nect to the tub drain hole and the overflow hole are male pipes and slide into slightly larger pipes that

(BPT) - You know that moving into a new home can be one of life’s big-gest stressors - the pack-ing, the paperwork, the unpacking and of course finding the nearest coffee shop. Making your new house feel like your home can help alleviate some of this stress and provide a safe-haven for some much needed relaxation.

“Everyone has a differ-ent sense of what home is,” says Elizabeth Lind-mier of The Art Insti-tute of Colorado. So while the same aesthetic won’t work for everyone, she offers her top five tips to start you in the right di-

rection.

1. Texture and textiles - Instead of having a bunch of hard surfaces, cozy up your home with some-thing soft or textured. This could be a blanket, curtains or area rugs. These items will also pro-vide some acoustical val-ue so noises aren’t echo-ing in an empty space.

2. Comfort - Have some place in your home where you can relax, recharge and feel at ease. “Make a space where you would like to spend time,” Lind-mier says.

3. Color - A monochro-matic scheme with pops of colors can bring you into a place where you feel comfortable and hap-py. “Do your research on color theory before painting any space,” says Lindmier. “Different col-ors can spark different moods, emotions and even behavior. Discover what you’d like a given space to accomplish, and use colors as a tool to cre-ate such environment.”

4. Lighting - There should be aesthetically pleasing lighting. Look at the difference between warm and cool lighting colors to decide what helps achieve the look you want. Also consider task, ambient and accent lighting for your space. “Lighting plays a key role in any home,” Lindmier says. “Through lighting design you can highlight design and architectural

features, create lighting which is more useful to the human eye, and work with natural light while keeping energy use to a minimum.”

5. Clutter/stuff - “Less is more, but make it more meaningful,” says Lind-mier. Get rid of your clut-ter. When sitting in your space, make sure you can look around and adore the things you see.

“Mies van der Rohe’s old adage, ‘less is more,’ cer-tainly holds true here,” says Jackie Barry, In-terior Design instructor at The Art Institute of Houston - North. “Select significant pieces of fur-niture and art to move. You don’t need to have or show everything you have all in one room.”

Barry also advises in-corporating a concept called biophilic design, which recognizes the in-herent need of humans to interact and affiliate with nature to achieve and maintain optimum health and well-being. “Bring the outside in; don’t neglect good views to the outside, accentuate them,” she says. “Let your garden and landscaping work for you on the inside. Con-necting with nature can also have a calming and a comforting effect.”

Meredith resident Tim Carter is going to be at the show all weekend with his Certified organic Stain Solver. This pow-dered oxygen bleach is a multi-purpose cleaner that cleans just about anything water washable. It’s a miracle tile grout cleaner, it gets out set stains in garments, and it can clean the toughest stains in carpeting.

This remarkable product is the creation of National-ly Syndicated Newspaper Columnist and National Award-Winning Remod-eler, Tim Carter. Tim’s column runs each week in the Weirs Times and he discovered the power of organic oxygen bleach

when he was researching deck cleaners for a col-umn years ago.

The typical deck clean-ing methods available at that time employed tox-ic chlorine bleach that’s harmful to plants and can turn wood white. Tim wanted to see if he could find a better way to clean — one that left the wood completely unharmed.

His search lead him to a lab in Indiana, where he was told about a “mir-acle cleaner.” It was as tough on stains as chlo-rine bleach, yet nearly as gentle as water on the surfaces it was used to clean. He thought it was too good to be true so he began testing it on every

stain he could find.Tim used it on decks,

carpet, tile, clothes, an-tique linens, garments that dry cleaners couldn’t clean and any thing he could find that you could wash with water. He dis-covered quickly it removed mildew, mold, algae from wood and composite deck-ing and returned the wood to its natural color.

He used it on laundry that had set stains no other cleaners could re-move. His clothes came out shockingly cleaner. He used it on tile grout. Filthy tile grout came clean within minutes with mild scrubbing. He even poured it in his toilet

cause the tub to form cracks over time as your body weight and the weight of the water cre-ates too much stress, es-pecially around the drain hole. The bottom of the tub must never ever flex so follow the instructions to ensure it doesn’t hap-pen.

One thing I a lways did when I installed any bathtub was to insulate around it. This is very im-portant in your situation since you’re purchasing a soaking tub that you may sit in for an hour or more. Without insu-lation around the tub, the heat from the water leaves quite rapidly. With insulation, you can relax for quite a long time as the water stays nice and warm.

I placed unfaced pieces of fiberglass batts around the tub and filled all voids. Don’t pack it tight, as fi-berglass insulation works best when it expands nat-urally out of the wrapper. Take the time to do this and you’ll not regret one moment the effort you invested, especially the first time you’re soaking in the tub!

slightly larger than the other. This same arrange-ment allows the plumber to adjust the pipes to fit the tub openings he’s working with.

The actual drain pipe that’s in the slab the plumber will connect to is probably 1 1/2-inch

diameter. That’s a com-mon pipe size for tubs. Large stand-up shower stalls tend to have 2-inch pipes draining them. A P-trap is used below the tub waste and overflow piping to create the water seal needed to stop sewer gas and vermin from entering

your bathroom.There’s much to know

about making sure a bathtub is set properly. The first thing I would do is get the written installa-tion instructions provided by the tub manufacturer. This used to be hard, but almost all instructions are now available at the manufacturers’ websites.

What’s important for all tubs is that the floor they rest on is solid. Since you’re on a concrete slab, this is not an issue. If the tub is cast iron, then you want to make sure the cast pegs and skirt along the front of the tub are all in contact with the slab once the tub is level side to side and front to back. You don’t want the tub to rock or move once you step into it. Use galva-nized metal shims to sup-port the tub as needed where the tub contacts the slab.

Acrylic or fiberglass tubs need special care as the bottom of the tub doesn’t contact the con-crete slab. There’s a void space. Pay close atten-tion to the instructions with respect to mixing up a waterproof compound like brick mortar, real plaster or whatever com-pound they recommend you set the tub into.

Failure to do this can

(StatePoint) This spring season, help promote a healthy ecosystem by learning to identify and control damaging plants and insec ts in your yard.

Information about com-mon invasive species and backyard invaders is now being offered by Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment (RISE):

Invasive PlantsInvasive weeds can out-

compete native species, changing the local eco-system. Many varieties, first introduced as flora to plant in gardens, can be confused with similar, native varieties. Here are two common damaging ones to watch out for:

• Purple Loosestrife, native to Europe and Asia, is found in most states. One plant can produce more than two million seeds annually.

• Native to China, the Tr e e - o f -Heaven was widely planted as an or-namental plant for many years and is often con-fused with other trees having similar leaves, such as black walnut, butternut, and most su-mac.

Invasive InsectsInvasive insects can

also have a severe nega-tive impact on native species by out-compet-ing them for food and resources. Many also cause and carry disease and prey on native spe-cies. Two common ones to look out for include:

• Emerald Ash Borer, native to Asia, is promi-nently found across the Northeast, Midwest, and Southeastern United States. The larvae do the most damage, killing ash trees by feeding on the inner bark.

• Zebra Mussel, na-tive to lakes in south-ern Russia, is found in hundreds of waterways throughout the United States. The species com-monly clog water intakes,

damage boats, and can cause cuts and scrapes if they grow on rocks, swim rafts, and ladders.

Backyard PestsDid you know native

plants and insects can cause damage too?

• Ticks can transmit Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Left untreated, Lyme dis-ease infects the joints, heart, and nervous sys-tem. After time spent outdoors, check for ticks, especially in and around your ears, inside your bel ly button, behind your knees, around your waist, on your scalp, and in your hair.

• Mosquitoes can carry See yard on 10

After six months of rig-orous testing — and the wonder and amazement of friends — Tim became a believer. He named the cleaner Stain Solver due to it’s remarkable ability to remove even the tough-est of stains, and started selling it from his base-ment.

Everyone in his fam-ily pitched in, helping to hand-apply labels, fill bottles and carry them up the steps to the waiting UPS trucks. Over time, the word spread about this “Uncle Tim’s magical miracle cleaner,” and the business grew.

It’s certified organic ac-tive ingredient is made in Texas and the pure soda

Follow the “five Ds” to protect yourself: Drain standing water; Stay in-doors at Dusk and Dawn; Dress in long-sleeves and pants; and use DEET-based mosquito repel-lent.
