Inspirational shared by Cathy Smith during the Area Extension Homemaker Council Meeting on
August 1, 2016
There once was a bunch of tiny frogs, who arranged a running competition. The goal was to reach
the top of a very high tower. A big crowd had gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer
on the contestants. The race began. Honestly no one in the crowd believed that the tiny frogs
would reach the top of the tower. You heard statements such as, “Way to difficult; They will never
make it to the top; Not a chance they will suceed; The tower is too high.” The tiny frogs began
collapsing one by one….except those who were in a fresh tempo kept climbing higher and higher..
The crowd continued to yell, “It is too difficult; No one will make it.” More tiny frogs got tired and
gave up. But one continued higher and higher. This one wouldn’t give up!
At the end, everyone else had given up climbing the tower, except for one tiny frog, who, after a big
effort, was the only one who reached the top!
THEN, all of the other tiny frogs naturally wanted know how this one frog managed to do it. A
contestant asked the tiny frog how the one who succeeded found the strength to reach the goal?
It turned out ——— The winner was deaf!!

Thank you fellow homemakers for awarding us with the Above and Beyond Award. We humbly accept your
recognition, but realize there are many of you who do as much, if not more, than we do. You are the
backbone of the organization. We are honored to share in many activities that Homemakers do for
ourselves and the community. We are a caring social group, learning as we go, with a cause…..the
betterment of Meade County. Thanks again for honoring us.
Shirley Beavin and Marla Tennyson

Upcoming Class:
At a recent meeting, a person who had a very strong opinion kept interrupting others who were trying
to speak. The leader of the group, to help ease tension, highlighted the great points the disruptive
person had made, then asked him if he would help draft a solution to the problem being discussed.
The person responded back, “Are you asking me to volunteer my time to help you do the job you are
paid to do?” Needless to say, he will not be volunteering, just complaining! After hearing the
exchange, I reflected on how blessed I am to work with so many great volunteers who understand the
joy in volunteering is not helping out the paid person but the positive difference they are making in the
organization and the community. Not to mention the friends they have made along the way or the
knowledge of knowing a child will not go hungry because of their efforts. As we kick off a new club
year, think about the great things you have experienced because you volunteered your time. The
Meade County Extension Homemakers are strong because you are willing to voice your opinion, then
do everything within your power to make a difference! I’m so glad I get to work with you!
Thank You!
Jennifer

A big thanks to Marla Tennyson, Committee
Chairperson for the Meade County Homemaker Annual
Meeting, committee members and all other volunteers
from all the homemaker clubs for their time and effort
for a very successful annual meeting. Congratulations to
all those who were presented awards for their past year
efforts in many categories. Congratulations to Shirley
Beavin and Marla Tennyson for receiving the Above and
Beyond award this year. I heard many positive
comments about this year’s meeting. If you would like
to provide a comment about this year’s meeting, whether
that be positive or not, please pass that on to Donna at
the Extension Office. This will help us in preparing for
next year’s meeting. Remember, this meeting is to
honor all of you as the great homemaker members that
you are and continue to be and this is your meeting. I
sincerely hope that all who attended enjoyed the
different program, the table setup and the slideshow
which Donna worked so hard in creating. Please
remember throughout the year, if any members take
pictures of your club meetings/events or other
homemaker events/functions, please send copies to
Donna. This helps the person who is responsible for the
county scrapbook and for many other reasons.
Thanks to Marilyn Craycroft, Environment, Housing and
Energy County Chairman, for all her hard work and
effort in creating the recycling classes and preparing the
materials for each class this past year. Thanks to all
those homemakers who volunteered to go out to the
Meade County Primary and Elementary schools to teach
these classes. Hopefully more homemaker members will
consider joining in this effort this upcoming year. As I
have said before, more hands make less work for all. It
really is a joy to go to the schools and see how interested
the children are, how much they remember from the
class the year before and how many of their families are
now recycling because of what the children are being
taught. At the Meade County Homemaker Annual
Meeting, Mr. Darren Smiley, from the Meade County
Recycle Center, presented a check in the amount of
$2,670.00 to the Meade County Extension Homemakers
for their time and effort in teaching the children of
Meade County about the importance of recycling. These
monies, will in turn, be donated by the homemakers to
help many needy charities/organizations in the county.
Thanks to Cathy Smith, Committee Chairperson for the
Homemade Cobbler and Ice Cream Social, committee
members, volunteers who helped in any way and those
who donated baked item for the auction for this event.
Perhaps you did not volunteer but attended this function.
Thanks for your attendance and contributing to the total
which was raised. A total of $950.00 was raised to go to
Backpack for Hunger and will feed ten children this
year. Another successful event.
Thanks to all the homemaker clubs who submitted year-
end reports to Donna. These reports are very important
and submitting them on a timely basis certainly helps.
Thanks to those club members who have volunteered for
the county homemaker committees for this upcoming
year. My hopes are that many of you will consider a
chairmanship or co-chairmanship for one of these
committees, if you are contacted. Thanks to those
members who have accepted an officer or educational
chairmanship (whether that be in your club or at county
level). Many thanks to the clubs who submitted input
for consideration for the KEHA 2017 Recreational
Booklet. Input from two of the clubs submitting input
were combined and will be the entry for Meade County
for the month of July in this booklet.
I hope that each of you had a great 4th of July and took
time to remember and give thanks for those who have
made many sacrifices in order for us to enjoy our many
freedoms here in the United States.
Our county fair has come and gone. It took a lot of work,
time and effort of many homemaker members to get the
new Home and Garden Exhibit Hall ready and a lot of
volunteer hours to enter exhibits, prepare the exhibits for
viewing, hosting at the building each evening during the
fair, returning exhibits and cleanup of the building after
the fair but what a nice building we now have to display
all the exhibits. This is certainly something for all of us
in Meade County to be proud of and especially all the
homemaker members. Thanks to Jennifer for all her
effort in obtaining all the necessary items which helped
us display the entries so well and thanks for all her hard
work and helping us in so many ways. Congratulations
to all those who won ribbons at the fair and for sharing
all your talents with those who visited the Home and
Garden Building.
Please Keep up the Good Work and Keep on
Winning with the Kentucky Extension Homemaker
Association!

Friendships and Retirement
Many changes occur with retirement, and friendship is an area often overlooked. For some, friendships
are connected to work life. When you retire, you may feel that you have lost some friends or that you no
longer have a common interest with those people because you are not seeing them every day or sharing
an environment with them. It is important to maintain friendships that are important to you. The best
way to maintain old friendships is by making time for quality activity and conversation, sharing memories
and making the friendship a priority. With retirement, you may also find opportunities to make new
friends. New friendships may be developed through various social groups, people who share your
common interests or through volunteering. Friends at all ages are important and serve different
purposes. In retirement, friends help fill voids from family who may not live close by or due to illness or
widowhood. Friends keep your mind sharp, make you happier. Friends can inspire you and push you to
tackle your goals and dreams. Friends are there for you when you need support or a shoulder to cry
on. Friends are someone to laugh with. Friends can help you live a longer, healthier life.
