ENG On April 12, 1797 the Garinagu or “Black Caribes” but best known as Garifunas, arrived in Roatán. The Garifunas are descendents of Indians from the Carib-bean and the African slaves that wrecked near the island of San Vicente in 1665. The ships were carrying slaved that were to be used in the British Colonies in the area of Martinica, Santa Lucia, Granada, Dominica and Barbados. Finally leaving the island, in part by need but also forcibly moved by the British, the Garifunas arrived to the island of Roatan and to the coast of Trujillo. These two cultures despising discrimination, migra-tion, interaction and resettlement, stood together to preserve their cultural life style giving birth to a new people, culture and history and dialect still widely spoken today.

Their huts were initially made of sugar cane sticks and palm leaves and through little progress, and lack of external influence have almost remained the same until recently that they have also begun building with concrete. The Garifuna’s main source of income is fishing making hand made paddles, fishing nets and canoes. The most know Garifuna towns in Hondu-ras are: Tela, San Juán, Triunfo de la Cruz, Corozal, Trujillo, Santa Fe, Santa Rosa de Aguan and Punta Gorda. Many of these towns are independent and won’t waste anything that nature gives to them. In Roatán, the Garifuna’s way of life has evolved without leaving behind their culture, live style or habits. They mostly live in the Jose Santos Guardiola area in the community of Punta Gorda, keeping their ancestors way of life, living off the land and the sea, others have moved to larger more advanced communities.Today it is estimated that 60,000 Garifu-nas live in the area of Central America, and at least 50,000 have immigrated to other countries. Beaches have served as great support to their culture throughout the generations. Their music, based on drums and conch shells; their food mainly fish, bananas, plantains and yucca; their dances and distinguished participation in others fields such as medicine, sports and biology, have made the Garifuna’s a social and cultural harmony which stands out forming an important part of the Hondu-ran people.
