Treske is an independent family firm with nearly 50 years’ experience of making bespoke hardwood furniture, kitchens and special church and crematorium commissions. Everything that leaves our North Yorkshire workshops is made to order, to each customer’s exact specification. We use modern technology but remain totally committed to the skills of our workforce who select the best timbers, excel at fine craftsmanship and produce the exquisite finishes which bring out the beauty of the woods on every piece we make. It is the consistently high standards which keep our customers coming back for more and those contented clients’ recommendations bring new visitors to our showrooms, new orders on to our books, and increasingly clients from around the world.

The British, European and American hardwoods we use at Treske come from sustainable forests where new trees are planted to re-stock areas that are felled. Most of the timbers used are Forestry Stewardship Council certified. We are a holder of the Manufacturing Guild Mark from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, awarded for excellence in British Furniture Manufacturing and are supporters of the charity Woodland Heritage.

Charlton Park Crematorium, AndoverPurE CrEmATION

Treske worked with the client to design and install a truly bespoke catafalque with a rise and fall platform and heavy duty, bariatric rollers. This allows the coffin to be lowered at the end of the service and then raised back up once the mourners have exited the chapel. The catafalque is also fully movable on heavy, lockable castors.

The oak lectern has also been specially designed for this project and features an electronically height adjustable reader with integrated AV and the controls for the rise and fall catafalque set neatly into the lectern top.

Comfortable and contemporary stackable chairs provide seating for up to 86 people. They can also be rearranged to create smaller, more intimate seating layouts or cleared from the space completely.

Trent Valley Crematorium was commissioned by Dignity PLC in summer 2017 and completed in May 2018. Treske were tasked with helping to complete the interior fit-out which included the following items: construction of main catafalque platform and lectern, supply of chapel seating and additional furniture, construction and fitting of bespoke waiting room and reception furniture, design, construction and fitting of bespoke family room display cabinet, tables and chairs. Also included in the brief was a completely circular committal curtain which operates on a 10 metre track fitted to a steel halo. The steel halo was installed by the main contractor and then Treske undertook the installation of the track, motors, controllers and curtains. Treske worked very closely with the architect and client to ensure the final scheme was exactly as required and with the main contractor to make sure that all areas were completed on time and to plan.

9lECTErNS & PrEAChING POINTSA lectern for a standing minister or reader is an essential part of the furnishings of a crematorium or chapel. It must be of an appropriate height or adjustable, strong, stable, and with sufficient desk width for large books or tablets.

Every Treske lectern is the result of discussion with the client, so that each one also fits within its architectural context and fulfils practical needs.

Treske made and installed a catafalque platform, as well as installing new curtain track motors and controller for the committal area, before hanging the catafalque curtains. Further furnishings including blinds for the windows that were made and installed by Treske. Non-stacking St Wilfrid chairs with upholstered seats and wooden backs were made in quality solid oak. Matching seating frontals were also installed joining the bespoke lectern and organ surround, also designed and made by Treske.

12 ChAIrSEvery church, chapel, or meeting area requires seating that is comfortable, strongly made, well designed, attractive and practical. This is especially true for the high frequency use chairs and bench seating will experience within a crematorium.

Treske make and supply stacking wooden chairs with or without hymn book shelves, with wood, leather, rush or upholstered seats and in a range of woods including oak and beech, or with special stained finishes. (Trolleys for storing and moving stacking chairs also made and supplied.)

Stacking chairs give the flexibility to create space and be set out in different configurations. The choice of chair is important and can depend on the storage space available, the ease and distance of moving, the uses the chairs will be put to, their aesthetic fit – and they need to be comfortable!

Bench designs are often made that match those of the bespoke chairs, and both are used in conjunction with each other. Mixing stacking benches in with chairs can increase the seating capacity, as well as being lightweight and easy to stack.

Enfield CrematoriumDIGNITY PlC

Enfield Crematorium is operated in partnership with Haringey Council. It is one of London’s largest crematoriums and has been open since 1938. Two chapels, the North Chapel and the South Chapel, can accommodate up to 150 people each. Treske supplied each chapel with new seating and pew frontals as well as new catafalque and organ surrounds. A priest’s chair and lectern completed the furniture requirements. Treske also supplied new catafalque racking and curtains, to fit with the refurbishment and material scheme colour and texture plan. The family rooms were also supplied with console tables and chairs as well as specially designed display shelving.

16 CATAfAlquESThis raised structure on which the coffin is placed is designed and made to order. The design of the catafalque will cover aesthetic requirements as well as practical elements such as the type of rollers or domes of silence, capacity for bariatric loading or being able to turn through ninety degrees.

Working closely with the project architect, main contractor and client, Treske produced interior schemes and furniture designs for the brand new, contemporary styled buildings containing two modern chapels.

Treske supplied bespoke furniture including catafalques, rise and fall lecterns with integrated controls and AV features, bespoke sofas for the first two rows in each chapel and individual chairs throughout the rest of the chapel. Treske also supplied the specially shaped, motorised curtain tracks to hold the main committal curtains and a secondary lighter voile curtain. Treske also supplied portable coffin stands and an interactive outdoor notice board, all in solid oak.

Westerleigh Crematorium, New Woodland ChapelWESTErlEIGh GrOuP

The addition of the new Woodland Chapel to the facilities at Westerleigh Crematorium has provided a smaller, private and intimate chapel.

Treske designed and made the bench seating in ash to match the woods used in the other furniture within the chapel. The upholstered benches are arranged in five rows of three benches.

Each row is fixed together so that the seat cushions of the benches fit together to form a continuous seat.

Upholstery was chosen by Westerleigh to fit in with the colour scheme and the benches were upholstered by Treske. Treske offer a wide range of suitable contract fabrics to contract specifications Crib5 standards and FR treated.

24 BENChESCraftsman-made in responsibly sourced woods, either to unique contemporary designs or to reflect the style of any setting, benches can be upholstered and finished in a variety of ways.

Many crematoriums have bench seating, commonly made using ash or oak and with upholstered seats. Seating layouts are usually fixed since a crematorium is in continuous use and there is a requirement to avoid any rearranging of the seating. Treske often fix the benches to the floor so that the seating format is fixed into one design, however consideration has to be made where there is underfloor heating. If a more flexible arrangement is required, then freestanding benches and pews can be easily moved.

Many benches reflect and match the style of bespoke Treske chairs and in some situations are used in conjunction with each other. Mixing stacking benches with chairs can increase the seating capacity of a space, as well as the benches being lightweight and easy to stack out of the way in the same way as stacking chairs. A variety of upholstered and solid timber versions are available and can be customised to any crematorium’s exact needs.

25mclaren funeral ParlourDonald McLaren family funeral directors commissioned Treske to make benches in the style, timber and colour to match old existing benches so that both could be used in a seating plan for a new funeral parlour chapel built in Airdrie.

Treske also designed and made frontals for the front row of benches to suit the modern contemporary style of the benches. The brief also included an altar and desk top lectern. Like the benches these items were made in beech. The altar was designed to show a back lit leaded glass design set below the altar surface, while being enclosed by uplifting timbers.

Treske were tasked with helping to transform the interior of the main chapel including reworking and updating the existing catafalque by cladding with new oak panels and contrasting ebonised rails.

New bespoke furniture items included a lectern with integrated controls and AV features, an organ screen, pew frontals and a console table, all in a design and finish to link with the chapel interior. New solid oak benches were made for the chapel

that feature removable sections in the front rows to facilitate wheelchair access.

A colour scheme was devised for the client including curtain and upholstery fabrics, carpet, timber finishes and paint colours. The brief included the replacement of the main committal curtains using the existing tracks with new motors, controls and curtains supplied in a hard wearing, contract suitable fabric.

Treske, as designer-makers, can make any table shape and size. Side tables, bookstands and radiator covers are all part of our portfolio and can be made, in the same timbers, style and finish, as the more mainstream items of furniture.

Many crematoriums choose to have display shelving to show ranges of cremation accessories, including urns, plaques, caskets and jewellery displays for their customers. Display shelving can be different combinations of open shelves or ones covered with glazed doors, with or without lighting, with storage areas below the display areas.

30 WAITING rOOmSAs with meeting rooms these areas are used for sensitive moments and require furniture that allows their comfortable use. Tables and seating in matching designs and decor to fit with other areas of the crematorium are designed, made and installed.

CAfÉSCrematoriums are often a focal point for family and friends’ gatherings, a process that is repeated regularly throughout each day. Some crematoriums recognise this need by providing café and meeting facilities that can be used before and after services. Different joinery items from display cases, storage cupboards, to radiator covers and sound desks are frequently asked for, designed and made for our customers. All upholstered pieces are made using solid wood frames and then upholstered by hand using hard wearing, contract suitable fabrics. Fabric colours can be tied in very closely to the rest of the scheme to ensure the upholstery will coordinate with the rest of the scheme. We can replace old, worn-out motorised curtain tracks systems in existing crematoria or supply brand new systems for new build projects.
