Letter from the EditorDearest spikkel

Welcome to Spikkelhood!

I compiled this very exciting Spikkel book to provide you with as much information as possible about life in House Mags, as well as life at the University. The Spikkel book will help you prepare and get excited for what lies ahead!

This book is your first opportunity to meet your House Parents and House Committee members (HK). Each HK lady has written a special message for you that will help you get an idea of what they are all about and what each one’s portfolio entails.

There are also answers to frequently asked questions, but if you have any additional unanswered questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

This book is essentially your “cheat sheet” to House Mags. Make sure you take note of all the details provided. Please read every page carefully as it contains a lot of valuable information.

You are about to take the first step of becoming part of House Mags and experiencing our Pink Passion. Sit back, make yourself comfortable and join me as I take you on a brief guide of our Pink Palace, namely House Mags!

Of course, a beautiful book like this takes a group effort. Allow me to thank a few individuals for their hard work and dedication to this project. Elke Momberg of Dreamwave Design Solutions for her highly professional work. Thank you to our fellow Mags Lady, Nicola Stock for taking our informal photos. A huge thank you goes to Protea Bookstore for sponsoring the printing of this book. Last, but definitely not least, thank you to our lovely house mom who has been instrumental in putting the book together and ensuring that it is completed in time for you to enjoy. Without this team effort, the Spikkel book would not have been possible – so I am most grateful. Happy reading!

Dear pareNts

Congratulations on your daughter being accepted into the University of Pretoria and the House Mags residence!

All residences follow a University-approved Welcoming Week programme from 25 January to 2 February. During this week your daughter will be very busy getting acquainted with her new environment. You can rest assured that our Welcoming programme does NOT involve initiation. It is a necessary programme to orientate your daughter to university and residence life. Due to high stress factors typical to adapting to a new environment (such as being unfamiliar with one’s surroundings and being exposed to an overload of information), your daughter may feel very tired towards the end of Welcoming Week.

You can help her through this time by being positive and by reassuring her that it takes time to adapt to a new environment. Please do not put unnecessary pressure on her to have regular contact with you during Welcoming Week. She will have some free time during which she will be able to contact you, but generally speaking, no news is good news! Lastly, we will ensure that your daughter eats three nutritious meals per day during Welcoming Week. If students are busy on campus during lunch time, we take their meals to them.

If a problem does occur, especially during Welcoming Week, please inform us so that we can resolve the matter ASAP. In addition, we have access to medical, psychological and academic support and assistance. If you ever feel that your daughter needs extra care or support during a difficult time, please contact Melissa Pretorius (First Year Guardian) or the House Parents (André & Yolanda Jordaan). If your daughter needs additional personal belongings or medicine during Welcoming Week, please call Melissa to make the necessary arrangements for delivery. In general, should your daughter experience a problem, she should go to her First Year Guardian, any of the House Committee members and/or the House Parents for help.

Herewith some valuable information to assist you when moving into House Mags on 25 January 2020:• PACKING: Please consult the checklist at the

end of the book to ensure that your daughter has all the necessary items packed.

• ARRIVAL: Please report to the recreation hall when you arrive at House Mags. Here you will receive your daughter’s room keys and clothing, get the opportunity to hand-in all the items she had to bring along, and pay for outstanding clothing and other items.

• MOVING IN: You can move your daughter’s belongings into House Mags between 07h00 and 12h45 on Saturday, 25 January 2020. Should you wish to move in earlier, you can do so on Friday 24 January 2020 between 12h00 and 18h00. House Mags has 11 floors and two lifts. Be prepared to wait your turn at the lift, or to carry your daughter’s belongings up the stairs. It may be a good idea to bring family members along to help you move in. Please ensure that you allow yourself sufficient time to get your daughter and all her belongings moved into House Mags.

• PARENTS MEETING: Please be moved in and unpacked by 12h45 on 25 January to allow yourself to attend the parents only meeting in the recreational hall at 13h00. During this meeting we will share important information with you, and answer any of your last questions.

• SAYING YOUR GOODBYES: After the parents meeting in the hall, you will have the chance to say your goodbyes. Please ensure you are done by latest 14h45 so as to allow your daughter to report to the hall at 14h50. This will mark the beginning of the official Welcoming Week programme!

Your emergency contact number is that of Melissa Pretorius, the First Year Guardian (Cell: 072 474 2693). You will get peace of mind once you realise how happy your daughter is in House Mags, and that it has become her home away from home. If you find the empty room in your house overwhelming, give yourself a pat on the back and remind yourself of your great achievement in raising a daughter that has been admitted into a top-class university and a fantastic residence!

Dearest spikkel

You are standing at the threshold of your academic career at one of the top universities in South Africa. It is a privilege to be able to study at the University of Pretoria, but an even greater one to be part of House Mags. In our residence you will be included into a unique family circle and become part of a special sisterhood.

For many students, living in a residence is a transformative experience. At House Mags you will be shaped in different ways – not only intellectually and emotionally – but also as a person. We strive to create an environment that promotes both academic and experiential learning. Furthermore, we encourage dialogue opportunities to promote a sense of understanding and belonging. We celebrate the fact that each individual is unique, but we also appreciate that, as students and human

beings, there are many touch points that make us the same. We invite you to become part of a special group of ladies that functions as a unit. In House Mags, you will receive the necessary support to enable you to perform on several levels – whether it be academically, culturally, socially or on the sports field.

Every residence has a special name for their first year students, and in House Mags our first year students are referred to as Spikkels. Our second year students are referred to as ‘semis’ and our third/fourth year students are referred to a ‘seniors’. We refer to all the students in House Mags as ‘the house’.

The residence is guided by our vision stating that “House Mags strives to establish a sisterhood and a sense of belonging in a home that inspires passion and excellence”. Our vision is shaped by our six values namely acceptance, integrity, mutual respect, ownership, pride and ‘to be the best you can be’.

Before we say goodbye, let us tell you about ourselves. We are both professors at the university (Economics and Marketing) and have been working with students for many years.

However, in House Mags, we are not lecturers, but your House dad and House mom (often referred to as Papa Pink and Mama Pink). It was indeed our passion for young people that led us to become house parents of House Mags. We are a family of four – this is if we include our dog (Rommel) and our cockatoo (Magnum). Rommel is a friendly pug dog that sleeps most of the day (he is 13 years old), and Magnum is a pretty pink-and-gray cockatoo who talks, whistles and plays all day.

We live on the residence premises in a house adjacent to the House Mags building. You will recognise our house from the pink front door (reflecting the colour of the residence). By the way, did you know that the word ‘Mags’ in our residence name is the nickname for our original name ‘Magrietjie’ which is the name of a flower? To ensure that we have a daily reminder of this beautiful flower that is also

linked to our residence name, we have planted a Magrietjie flower in a pot on our front porch. The Magrietjie shrublet produces masses of daisy-like flowers almost all year round. When you visit our home, you will see the Magrietjie flowers next to our pink front door. You can also see the Magrietjie flower in our residence logo, where our mascot, known as MaerGrietjie, holds a Magrietjie flower.

We are looking forward to getting to know you as a Spikkel. We know that you will make lifelong friends in House Mags. Please remember your background and circumstances may have influenced who you are, but that you are now responsible for who you become.

lots of piNk love!

Welcome to the Family!

“The most beautiful things in life are not associated with money; they are memories, and moments.”

Every lady in the Mags Pink Palace is connected via a memory. A little touch of pink magic that made us happy, inspired us to be better, got us through a difficult situation. A pink moment where we have laughed till we couldn’t breathe, sang till we had no voices left and got up and decided to go to McDonald’s at 2 in the morning.

I hope that you are excited to join our crazy yet amazing family. The journey ahead may seem daunting at first, but I assure you that you are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. At House Mags we are not just a residence

but rather a family; a family filled with love, laughter, joy and passion (especially for our colour: PINK).

The love and sisterhood that is shared amongst the ladies is what separates us from other residences on campus.

My name is Tanna Brownlee and I am your Primaria for 2020. My team – a group of exceptional women – and I are working passionately to ensure that you find your place as a sister-in-pink within our family. I want to assure you and your parents that you will be well looked after and will leave our residence a better version of yourself. My job is to ensure that the House Committee is constantly creating platforms for you to thrive. When you look back on your time here, you will not believe how much you have grown.

Our goal for this year is to IGNITE. We want to instil a passion in you for life, knowledge

and the people around you. I truly believe that passion ensures that each lady has purpose and ambition. It makes girls work harder for a goal, but it also makes relationships stronger and days brighter. We at the Pink Palace are here to ensure that each girl that enters our residence leaves as a strong and confident lady ready to face the world.

“People are not lazy; they just need a goal that inspires them.”

Our theme for the year can be better explained when thinking of a matchbox. The matchbox is a representation of the residence. It is used to hold the matches. It is also a tool for starting a fire. The matches represent the ladies within House Mags. Without each other both the matches and matchbox have no purpose. The matches require the matchbox to ignite. Once ignited, girls can pass the flame onto the ladies around them much like a match lighting another match. All it takes is one lady to start an unstoppable fire – so let’s make that person YOU.

I want to encourage you to venture outside your comfort zone and participate in things that you

never imagined possible for yourself. Now is the time for you to push your limits and truly discover what the world has to offer you.

As you take the road less travelled by, you will discover that the memories being made are beyond your wildest imagination. The journey before you holds life-changing experiences, and once completed you will have stories of fun, frustration and fearlessness to tell your best friend – who you will meet right here at your new home.

They say home is where heart is, and my heart belongs to the magical Pink Palace. The pink passion that flows through my veins cannot be replaced because my blood is filled with love, passion and victory. I hope that your journey here leaves you feeling the same. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for you in our special Home.

“Wherever life plants you, bloom with grace.”

My courageous Spikkels, what a privilege to be planted in the most beautiful residence the University of Pretoria has to offer. Here you will be watered, nurtured and equipped with all the tools you need to bloom. And if I do my job right, I will be able to stand at the end of the year and have seen you flourish.

My name is Melissa Pretorius and I am your Spikkel mommy for the year – in more professional terms, First Year Guardian. I am here, along with the rest of the House Committee (HK) to ensure that you bloom during your first year, here at House Mags. And if you choose to stay, these will truly be the best years of your life.

My portfolio is YOU! I am responsible for your overall wellbeing and making sure you adjust to university life easily. I am here to put your

parents’ mind at ease knowing there is someone taking care of you, who they can contact at any time.

House Mags is a safe place where you will grow, learn, adapt and overcome many obstacles – with the help of your HK, fellow Spikkels and seniors in res. It is important for you to get to know your fellow Spikkels as you are all in this together and are enduring the same new beginnings and facing the same changes. It’s also helpful to get to know the seniors as they have experienced moving away from home and adjusting to university life first-hand and are more than willing to help you with your transition.

My fellow HK ladies and I are dedicated to making this the best home away from home for all of you. I will always welcome you with open arms and will be your go-to in times of need or if you’re simply looking for some company over a cup of tea.

My goal is for us to work together to maintain our great residence while making beautiful memories along the way.

All I ask is that you come with an open mind and energetic spirit so we can make this a year to remember! I urge you to take a leap outside your comfort zone. Speak to someone you wouldn’t normally speak to and give this new chapter in your life everything you’ve got. I strongly believe that if you give your everything to House Mags, she will give her everything and more back to you.

Please do not be intimidated to try something new – if you have any talents or just want to try something out for the fun of it – do it! Participate in anything and everything that you’re interested in, even if you’ve never done it before. Join in the fun with your new Spikkel friends and I guarantee you’ll have the time of your life!

As my roommate and I did in our first year when we signed up for tennis. Now, I am certainly not a good or even average tennis player! Nevertheless, we were eager to try. I don’t think we scored a single point, but we had so much fun and laughed until our tummies ached!

I know change seems daunting, but you’ll never have to face it alone. We will laugh together, cry together but most importantly grow together. I will be here to lend an ear, be a shoulder to cry on and a friend to laugh with. I am beyond excited to ignite the sisterhood within each and every one of you.

Ladies, welcome to the Spikkelhood! I cannot wait to meet you all and take this journey with you!

Dear spikkel,

Welcome to the beginning of the rest of your life. You are about to take a major leap in achieving all the amazing things that you deserve in life and you have chosen a MAGnificent place to do it.

House Mags is more than a roof over your head while you navigate university. It’s a facility for your growth, personal development and the shaping of the ground-breaking woman that you want to be. It is a place to call home, make lifelong friends and unforgettable memories.

Your first year is quite an emotional rollercoaster, but fear not, as your Well-Being HK member, I am here for you. My job is to ensure that you do not neglect yourself in midst of all the chaos that comes with being a student. I’m here to cater for your mental health, emotional stability and all-round happiness. My door is always open to you if you need a little pink love to rejuvenate your spirit.

For clothing, I am here to make sure you look great in your fabulous House Mags merchandise. Your first-year clothing items are:• Pink house shirt (compulsory)• Daisy t-shirt (compulsory)• Jacket (optional)

On Thursdays we display our #PinkPride for all campus to see by wearing anything pink or any Mags merchandise. It’s a great way to strengthen our unity, but also a way to eliminate one outfit to plan for the week.

As you embark on this daunting journey, think of yourself as a seed. House Mags is the fertile soil where you can grow, however, choosing to bloom is your choice.

Being at university is such a privilege and it is your responsibility to make the most of it. Take every opportunity for growth, every chance to learn something new. I urge you to meet new people, break boundaries and make magic.

Beautiful spikkels,

“Give your everything to Mags and she will give her everything back to you”.

These words I heard for the first time when I was a Spikkel and in my 3 years in residence I haven’t come across anything more true.

Congratulations on being placed in House Mags! You have without a doubt been placed in the most prestigious female residence at the University of Pretoria (You’ll hear this often because it really is true).

Before I get too carried away, let me introduce myself. I am Cecile Kruger, your Vice-Primaria: Academics and Marketing.

My role as Vice-Primaria is to assist and provide support to our Primaria in managing the residence.

Academically university is a very different ball game compared to high school – but don’t worry! That is exactly why I am here. Your parents will be very happy to hear that my job is to ensure that in-between all the fun residence activities there is someone to help you keep your academics in check. I handle the mentorship programme where each one of you will be assigned a senior Mags lady who will not only be your academic mentor throughout the year but hopefully also become a friend.

I have however learned that balance between academic and non-academic activities (sport, culture, social and everything in between) is key. Should you at any moment feel that the academic pressure is too much or should you have any doubts regarding your degree –

my door is always open and you’re welcome to come and have some tea. I might not have all the answers, but I can assure you that I will listen and try to help as best I can.

In terms of the Marketing aspect of my portfolio I am responsible for all the internal and external communication in the residence. This includes our floor news, our newsletter to alumni, updates on ClickUP and our social media. If you aren’t following @housemags on Instagram yet, I suggest you do so before you miss out on anything!

I know you may be anxious and not sure of what to expect, but I assure you the moment you enter through the doors of the pink palace you become part of not only a residence but a sisterhood. With that – welcome to our family!

Dear spikkel,

Congrats on your placement in the very pink House Mags. This is one of the best residences that the University of Pretoria has to offer. It is a home away from home and what better way to kick off your university experience than with a loving sisterhood.

I am Kopano and I will be your community engagement (aka RAG) HK for the year. RAG stands for Reach out And Give – and that is exactly what we set out to do.

Audrey Hepburn once said:

“As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands – one for helping yourself, the other one for helping others.”

Helping other people to the best of our abilities is a very essential element in human existence. We can always impact someone’s life with the smallest gesture. This is where I come in, to create opportunities for our fellow Mags sisters to help the less fortunate and impact the university and the surrounding communities in a positive way.

To help be a blessing in someone’s life, please refer to the checklist at the end of this book to ensure that you bring all the items required for RAG. Remember to also bring your Grietjie Piggy. This is a handmade piggy bank to compete in the annual Miss Grietjie Piggy Parade. Decorate your piggy according to the theme: “if my piggy was a Disney character”. Then fill your piggy with as many coins, notes (or both) as possible – the money will go towards our RAG projects. You will then

dress up like your piggy and parade with your matching piggy. More information is provided on the checklist at the end of the book. Remember to also bring your old or new school shoes, as this will be one of our few short-term projects with disadvantaged schools.

There will be loads of opportunities to engage and have fun with your fellow spikkels, semis and seniors. Take every opportunity to build sisterhoods and make tons of friends – and be prepared to have a Mags-tastic year!

Should you need anyone to chat to, a shoulder to cry on or any spiritual upliftment during your time in the residence, please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time of the day or night. Can’t wait to change the world and create memories of a lifetime with the best spikkels.

Dearest spikkel,

As a young adult entering this new phase in your life at House Mags, it is important to have a healthy balance. I am passionate about sport, however I acknowledge that there has to be a balance between sports, academics and a social life.

I would like to welcome you all to the Pink Palace and introduce you to the five “C’s”. (competence, connection, confidence, character and caring). Sports participation has proven to improve one’s attention span, information processing and memory. So, in essence: having a balanced lifestyle is imperative to one’s well-being.

Even though there will be times when you might feel overwhelmed, embrace all the wonderful opportunities that House Mags has to offer. Even though you may have never picked up a badminton racquet, you might be pleasantly surprised, as I was, playing basketball for the first time. I encourage you to take that step and try something new.

The beauty of sport is that whether you are participating or supporting, it is what unites us and develops positive mental attitudes and good sportsmanship – and at House Mags WE ARE ONE!

Well ladies, I hope your favourite colour is pink as you are about to enter your new pink life. So buckle up, it’s going to be quite the ride…

I wish you all the best for the new chapter in your life; a unique marathon with your HK and house mates right by your side every step of the way.

Lots of pink love and always remember, we are a TEAM.Together EveryoneAchievesMore

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” – Plato

A HUGE congratulations to you on making it into the best residence in the University of Pretoria. I hope you are looking forward to some of the best years of your life. Welcome to our special family! As your House Committee for the year, we are here to guide you through this next adventure in your journey of life, and trust me, it’s going to be nothing short of amazing.

I am Mufaro Sambaza, your Culture External House Committee Member of 2020. You and I are going to spend a lot of time together, and I cannot wait to meet you! By the end of our time together, my only wish for you is to have stepped out of your comfort zone, and shown yourself what you’re made of on stage. 1nSync and Step It UP are bound to be some of your top highlights for the year, and you’ll soon understand exactly what I mean. On top of that, all of you singing sistas will be able to share my love for music as we create the most beautiful harmonies in the inter-residence Acapella competition. All these events require loads of fun, jamming and singing your heart out. You’ll meet some of your best friends, and learn so much about yourself – I promise you that much!

I was a first year not so long ago, and so I understand that this new experience may have you feeling mixed emotions. As your House Committee, I can assure you that we only have your best interest at heart and we encourage you to step into House Mags with an open mind, lots of pink passion and a fire inside of you. We

are here for you every step of the way, and we encourage you to take part in as much as you can. By doing that, you will not only become the best you can be, but you will make lifelong connections and memories with your fellow Mags sisters.

I want to end this off by telling you the motto I have chosen to live by. “See the good, and always shine.” I know that you have been placed into this residence for a reason, and you and I are going to light up fire inside ourselves, so that we can shine, together!

All the best for your exams, you are more capable than you think you are. We are so ready to embrace you for this new beginning.

all MY love to You, sHiNiNg star.

lovelY spikkel,

Welcome to the Pink Palace. I wish you all nothing but blessings and love during your stay here at House Mags – the best residence on campus!

As I read the above quote, I got goosebumps. It describes accurately how I feel about the colour pink and Mags, and I hope you will soon grow to feel the same way.

Here at Mags we have a sisterhood and this sisterhood is here for you through the good times, the bad times and everything in between.

It may be scary to think about moving out of the house but we as the HK are here to help you through all of it. We were once where you are now, and we remember it clearly!

I am the House Internal and Treasurer HK. As House internal I am responsible for you to have more than enough opportunities to bond with your fellow sisters. I organise the house dinner and many internal socials within the residence to help you create the bonds that you will remember for the rest of your life. As Treasurer, I help the residence run within its financial means.

Last thing I want to say is to take this new adventure by the horns and watch how you will grow into the woman you aspire to be.

Good luck with your final exams – I am thinking of you! I am so excited to meet you all and share my portfolio with you.

Dearest spikkel,

First and foremost, congratulations on being placed in House Mags – the best female residence on the University of Pretoria grounds.

I am Kemisetso Phakathi, Senior Guardian, Facilities and Security House Committee member of our beautiful Pink Palace. My role as a senior guardian is to look after the wellbeing of our seniors and to also ensure the relationship-building, together with the first- and second-year guardian, between first years, second years and seniors.

As the Facilities and Security HK, it is my duty to make sure that all facilities are clean and in tiptop condition. These facilities include the laundry room, the IT labs, the swimming pool area and much more. I trust that you will assist me to keep the residence looking beautiful and sparkling, and that you will come to respect the rules of these facilities to the benefit of all.

My advice to you, entering this new chapter of your life is to embrace each and every experience and feeling that comes with it.

Step out of your comfort zone and live your best life. I cannot wait to meet all you.

spikkels,

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one single step. I hope you realise that you are already two big steps ahead of everyone else by choosing to continue your journey at the University of Pretoria and choosing House Mags as your wonderful home away from home.

As your Secretary and Administration HK, I am responsible for room placements, parking (for those of you who require it) and a whole lot of paperwork to make sure our very well-oiled machine is running as best it can. My main reason for running as a HK was to serve House Mags in whatever way it needs me. Sometimes along the way you might need a little help – please don’t hesitate to ask me. As an HK member, my job extends far beyond just the duties written on paper. So, this is an open invitation to you, that should you ever need advice, a hug, coffee or anything I am willing to help. I may not know everything, but I am sure I could steer you in the right direction.

House Mags tries its best to cater for every single lady that lives here. You’ll be presented with so many different opportunities. The best part about it is that there is something for everyone, whether it’s sport, community engagement or cultural activities. Your university experience will be what you make it out to be and unfortunately this time in your life does not last long enough. Traveling the road less travelled by many may be difficult. But I challenge you to try something different, even if it’s just one thing. You may just be amazed at how many wonderful memories you’ll make when you step out of your comfort zone.

Some things in life aren’t made to be done alone. The biggest gift your Spikkel year will give

you is all the sisters you will gain. Your sisters will be there to pick you up when you fall or just to entertain you as you go along. No matter your differences or the strength of your bond, just remember that you are never alone.

Everyone’s destiny is different, and it is important that you create your own path. But always remember to keep and open mind and trust the process. During your Spikkel year, you might face some challenges, but with a little perseverance it’ll all be worth it in the end.Looking forward to igniting a sisterhood with you my little sister.

tHe Huppel soNg

We have a very special tradition called the “huppel” which is unique to House Mags. The huppel song is sung (in three

different languages) whilst skipping across the cement pathway into or out of the residence. We do the huppel

because we want to show everyone how happy we are as Mags ladies. The huppel can be sung at any time, on any

day. It is, however, mainly sung on Thursdays, also known to House Mags ladies as ‘Pink Thursdays’. You have to

experience it to understand it!

In English…And…we…will…

Huppel, huppel, huppel, huppel, because we feel happy!Huppel, huppel, huppel, huppel, ‘cause we are Spikkelkies.

In Afrikaans…En… ons… gaan…

Huppel, huppel, huppel, huppel, omdat ons vrolik voel!Huppel, huppel, huppel, huppel, want ons is Spikkeltjies.

In Sepedi…Bja-le re…

Huppel, huppel, huppel, huppel, a re thabileng!Huppel, huppel, huppel, huppel, re be le Spikkelkies.

House Mags soNgThe House Mags song is on the tune of Liquido’s Narcotic

Song. Take some time to listen to the tune of this song because this song can be sung at any time and place –

whenever and wherever the song is played. The main part of the song is sung by the HK, and the rest of the house joins in

at the chorus.

P.S. This song creates great envy among the other residences- and it brings House Mags together

– so sing it with pride!

It brings us great pride and is an apt description of what House Mags means to each lady in the residence.

that is in charge of the residence and House Committee (similar to the Head girl at school).

• House Committee (referred to as HK, pronounced as Haka): The house committee refers to the 11 elected leaders in a residence – often referred to as ‘the haka”. They are responsible for the management of the residence.

• Magrietjie: The previous name of House Mags.

• Spikkel: The unique name for a first-year student in House Mags. It means a beam of light.

• 1nSync: This is a song-and-dance production that is performed on stage by the first years of each residence. This event takes place only one week after your arrival and is part of an inter-residence competition.

• RAG: RAG is also referred to as Community Engagement. It is an abbreviation for Reach Out and Give. We have many RAG activities throughout the year in which we help the less fortunate.

• RAG wedding: Our RAG partners for 2020 is House Ukuthula (previously known as Olympus) – the male residence for the medical students on the Prinshof campus. During RAG wedding we meet with our RAG partners to celebrate the beginning of our RAG partnership. During the ceremony each residence is given the opportunity to present their Sweet Vows to the RAG partner. To make it fun, the dress code is ‘kitch’ or common – so don’t forget to bring some ridiculous mismatching clothes!

• Charming week: During this week we impress our RAG partners by spoiling them – singing to them, giving them coffee, having socials, etc.

Fast facts about House Mags

This wonderful residence was opened in 1982 as Magrietjie – and the name was proudly used for 36 years. The original residence name, Magrietjie, comes from the beautiful pink Magrietjie flower – which is why you will see a flower and the colour pink connected to all we do. At the end of 2018, the University adjusted residence names, and as a result, Magrietjie became House Mags. The word ‘Mags’ has always been always been associated with the residence. It was used, for many years, by the ladies as a nickname for the delightful Pink Palace. Today we are proudly House Mags with the most vibrant colour of all the residences-PINK. Our mascot is known as MaerGrietjie – a special lady that distinguishes us from other residences. She was designed in 1982 with the original porcelain MaerGrietjie kept securely in a

safe within the residence. You will see her ‘picture’ everywhere – she is painted on our building and printed on all House Mags clothing items. She sits blissfully holding the proud Magrietjie flower in her hands. Our slogan has stood the test of time and was slightly adjusted in 2019 to accommodate for the new name. Our slogan is “My Alles Vir Altyd Vir Mags” – #MAVAVM (Afrikaans for ‘My everything for House Mags forever’), and is the principle that every House Mags lady lives by. Our residence is governed by six values – as seen earlier in the book- and we consistently strive towards our vision of “establishing a sisterhood and a sense of belonging in a home that inspires passion and excellence”. The pink passion that flows through each ladies’ veins is what truly makes us MAGSnificent.

• Big Yes: The popular Big Yes (previously ‘Groot Ja’) remains one of our special “charming week” traditions. On one special evening, all the lights in the residence are switched off. With precise planning and timing, specific House Mags ladies switch on their lights and the word YES is spelled across the face of the residence. We do this to show our RAG partners that we agree (say YES) to a successful RAG partnership.

2019 Spikkel of the Year

Dearest spikkels,

Congratulations on being accepted into one of the best residences at the University of Pretoria. I hope you are ready for this new adventure, as your first year in our beautiful Pink Palace will be filled with excitement and adventure.

Your decision to join a residence, particularly House Mags, is one you will not regret. You will learn a great deal during your time here, about yourself, others and the world around you. Staying in res means you will be a part of a sisterhood; you will feel the strong bond and love that is shared amongst all the ladies in the res. You will make friendships and memories that you will cherish and treasure for life, but most of all you will become the best version of yourself.

The adjustment from staying at home to living in res may be difficult but embrace the challenge as House Mags will be your opportunity for change in order for you to grow and develop to your fullest potential. This residence will become your home away from home, and the ladies around you will become your chosen family.

Words that have remained with me from the moment I entered as a Spikkel are to “Give your all to House Mags and she will give her all and so much more to you in return.” My advice to you, is to take every opportunity that comes your way and participate in res activities

whether it is cultural, sports, social or RAG – there is something on offer for everyone. It is through participation that you will understand the pink passion which runs deep through this residence. You will gain from this experience what you decide to give.

Make new friends, keep an open mind, get involved and get keen for an experience that will ignite your first year at university. I look forward to meeting you all beautiful Spiks!

all MY piNk love,Lauren Gangiah

Dear future spikkels!

The best advice we can give any roommates would be to continuously communicate with each other and to make time to get to know one another. Enter your new room with an open heart and an open mind. You’ll find that having a roommate can be challenging, but it is also very rewarding. Use this time in your life to grow together and be open to change.

Roommates are special because for the first time in your life a stranger can become family or even just a small part of your heart. Roomie life is what you both make it to be. As roomies of the year, we have a few tricks up our sleeve to make your roomie adventure more exciting:

1. Roomie dates are important - this is when you get to know your roommate. We recommend Burger King’s 2 for a R100 special.

2. You have to compromise even if you think it’s impossible. Take turns to do the dishes or challenge yourself to share more things with your roommate like chocolates and cappuccino’s.

3. Late night trips to the vending machine helps both of you to cope. If you are bit more adventurous walk to McDonalds and get yourselves ice-cream.

4. Set boundaries, let your roommate know when you are upset or do not like what she is doing. Not everything is going to be common ground.

5. Be each other’s wing woman in life. A supportive roommate is a good roommate.

6. Snapchat streaks are necessary. Not only will you stay awake in class, your roommate will have an idea of how your day has been.

7. When in doubt s’mores. Celebrate your roommate!

Lastly remember that you are different people with different histories; respect each other for it. Be quick to listen and learn, and slow to get angry. If you are scared share your fears - don’t fight your battels on your own. For this year you do have a teammate who understands. All the best and make the most out of the #RoommateLife!

love, Lara & Nanette

wHat is tHe role of a resiDeNCe?The main role of a residence is to offer an on-campus living environment that supports your academic experience. House Mags will provide you with a family-like environment where you can feel safe and secure. It will offer you opportunities for personal development and growth. In a residence you will learn to adapt to different cultures while strongly identifying with House Mags as a subculture. One of the benefits of a residence is that you will experience an active student life which will enrich you on many different levels.

How to aDapt to resiDeNCe life?• Arrive with an open heart and mind, and be

willing to adjust to a new environment where different individuals live together under one roof.

• Be willing to share facilities (such as a bathroom and flat living area) with other individuals (there are six ladies living in one flat and there are six flats on a floor).

• Be sensitive towards other individuals who have different needs and cultures than you.

• Be willing to actively participate in student life (e.g. sport, culture, socials or RAG).

• Prepare yourself for a noisy and busy environment, both inside the residence as well as in the Hatfield area.

wHat is tHe purpose of welCoMiNg week? The main purpose of Welcoming Week is to empower you to adjust to your new living and academic environment. Our Welcoming Week programme is not an outdated and traditional approach to orientation, but an empowering programme designed and approved by the University. House Mags’s Welcoming Week programme is voluntary, but we strongly recommend that you participate in this well-structured programme as you will greatly benefit from it. The Welcoming Week programme is designed to provide you with specific and adequate information about the University and residence life. It will also expose you to the supporting infrastructures needed for your academic performance as a student and will facilitate your social adjustment by introducing you to the various facets of student life and opportunities on campus. In Welcoming Week you will follow an academic programme during the day, where-after you will follow a residence programme in the evening.

About residence life...You may have specific expectations of what life in a residence, and especially House Mags, entails. The following will give you a realistic picture of

what awaits you.

Remember to be open-minded and be willing to share in new experiences. Don’t miss out on anything that House Mags has to offer!

wHat Does welCoMiNg week eNtail?• Arrive with a willingness to make new friends

and get to know as many of your fellow-Spikkels as possible.

• Be prepared for no “free” time as you will follow a structured programme for the entire week. You will, however, have some private time as scheduled within the programme.

• Have a willingness to participate in all the activities, even if it may be out of your comfort zone (for example to chat to people you don’t know).

• Come fully energized as our first-year song-and-dance performance (1nSync) takes place just a week after your arrival.

• Be prepared for an extremely busy week with an overload of new information, but which will most definitely be worth your while.

When do I have to pay my accommodation fees and how much is it?Residence applications and payments are handled by the Client Service Centre (CSC) at the University of Pretoria (tel 012 420 5116 / 5110 / 5114 / 5115. Please check directly with the University as residences do not take responsibility for study and accommodation fees. The residence only handles clothing payments.

What is a “Spikkel”?A ‘Spikkel’ is our residence’s unique and special name for our first-year students.

What should I bring along? You need to bring you own personal belongings (clothes, personal hygiene products etc.). You also need to bring your own bedding (single beds and mattresses are provided). Bring enough clothes and personal items for four weeks as you may not get the opportunity to go home or buy new items. You don’t need to bring any furniture as your room will be equipped with a study desk and chair. Optional items to bring include a study lamp, fridge, computer, fan or heater. You might not need to bring these items immediately. It may be wise to settle in your room for a couple of weeks and then decide what additional items you need to make your life or room more comfortable. You will also be requested to bring certain specific items as stipulated at the end of this Spikkel book.

What will my room be like? Each floor (floors 3 to 11) in House Mags consists of six flats. Each flat has six ladies living in it. Each flat consists of a bathroom (bath, shower and basin) and separate toilet, as well as a lounge and kitchen area. A room consists of a bed, study desk and chair, a built-in cupboard and a wash basin. Most Spikkels will be allocated to a double room, which means you will share the room with another Spikkel. House Mags has limited single rooms available for Spikkels.

How are rooms allocated? The First Year Guardian and Administration House Committee member allocate Spikkels to specific rooms. Your First Year Guardian will provide you with an online link to a survey you have to complete. Based on your completed information from this survey, room allocations are made. We take into consideration: a) field of study b) whether you know someone you would like to share with c) your interests and personality d) your reasons for special requests. Special requests should be indicated on the Spikkel questionnaire.

Can I get a single room?Unfortunately only a few single rooms are available and you will most likely be allocated to a double room. Single rooms are allocated based on your matric marks (the higher your marks, the better your chances to get a single room). Experience has shown that ladies who share a room adapt quicker to residence life, especially during the first 6 months when things are very new and hectic. It may be to your benefit to share a room with someone who studies the same course. This enables you to study together, share notes and motivate one another. Great care is taken when selecting roommates and very seldom we have to make adjustments because ladies do not get along.

Will I go through a welcoming programme? Yes, House Mags (and all other residences) follows a University-approved one-week welcoming programme at the beginning of the year. This is a most valuable programme necessary to welcome new students into residence and university life.

What facilities are available in House Mags?House Mags has a recreation hall, dining hall, study centre, sitting room, television room, IT lab, laundry room, vending machine, swimming pool, soundproof music rooms, a beautiful front lawn and tight security.

The University of Pretoria offers strict security in and around the residence to ensure the safety of the ladies and their possessions. Curfews are maintained in the residence ensuring that you are back safe in the residence in the early hours of the morning. Each House Mags resident receives a student card that provides her with access into House Mags. There are security guards available 24 hours a day and extra security is arranged during special events and functions on the premises. The Hatfield area also has an active city improvement district team.

Are first-year students allowed to have cars…and where can they park?If you are fortunate to have a car, you may bring it to House Mags. However, you don’t need a car because House Mags is walking distance from campus, shops, book stores, banks, restaurants and churches. Residents of House Mags can apply for parking at the beginning of the year and will receive a parking disc that will allow you to park your car inside the fenced House Mags premises.

Can I stay in House Mags during University holidays?Student accommodation covers academic terms only and you will have to vacate your room during holiday periods. Students who wish to remain in the residence during the holidays must apply to the Department of Residence Affairs and Accommodation. If House Mags receives holiday guests (external visitors) you will have to remove all your personal belongings from your room for the duration of the university holiday period. More information about holiday arrangements is made available in the residence before each holiday period. Evacuation during the holidays usually only happens once a year.

May I bring my pet to House Mags?Unfortunately, no pets are allowed on residence grounds (this includes fish, birds, hamsters, snakes etc.). But our House Parents have a dog (Rommel) and a bird (Magnum) you can play with!

Can friends visit me in House Mags?Female friends can visit you in House Mags, except during study hours. Men are allowed to visit you (on the lawn, in the foyer area, in the sitting room), but they are not allowed beyond the access doors of House Mags. If a man (for example brother or father) needs to fix something in your room or carry something to your room, you will have to get special permission from the Primaria or Vice-Primaria. Once permission has been obtained, you have to make an announcement on the intercom system to inform the ladies on your floor that a man will be on the floor for a few minutes.
