Welcome to the Second Annual Houston Fine Art Fair

I invite you to explore the fantastic booth displays created by the 80 participating galleries. The fair presents a range of important artwork from contemporary and modern masters, emerging and mid-career, to today’s hottest stars. Explore the awe-inspiring public installations and eye-popping sculptures.

Take a seat for the highly informative and entertaining lectures program which brims with insider perspectives and advice. The panels are geared for both novice and experienced collectors. See the following pages for a description of these memorable events and displays.

The fair also proudly presents a sizable cross-section of the leading visual arts institutions from throughout the southwest region of America. Take some time to meet them and discover their wonderful programs.

The Selection Committee has worked long and hard in their efforts to present fairgoers with a dramatic viewing experience that provides access to the finest contemporary and post-war art on the market today. HFAF is again international in scope, proudly showcasing galleries from 11 countries.

I believe that HFAF is an excellent brand for the city of Houston - a dynamic metropolis that boasts 100 Museums and a world-class art community. It is our intent to establish this event as the premiere “must-attend” art fair in the southwest region, and the prime access point for Latin America. We have barnstormed around the state, and promoted around the nation in efforts to attract the most ardent and passionate art lovers in this part of the country.

I want to thank our local show advisors, MKG Art Management, not only for their major contributions evidenced here at Reliant Center, but for their producing the amazing HFAF ArtWeek lineup of extraordinary and fun events.

On behalf of Melissa Grobmyer, Janet Hobby and their team, our sponsors, our distinguished Collectors Committee, and the entire HEG Shows team, we hope you enjoy the fair experience.

Anya Tish Gallery presents: KATJA LOHER: “Multiverse” New York-based Swiss artist Katja Loher, one of a new generation of innovative video artists, abandons traditional settings for video projections and, instead, creates spatial video objects by incorporating sculpture with video. She does this by encasing video in hand-blown glass sculptures, called ‘Bubbles’, as well as projecting video onto surfaces of suspended weather balloons, which she calls “Videoplanets”. Born in 1979 in Zurich, Katja Loher has had solo exhibitions in the United States, Israel, Italy, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic, and her work is currently featured in a solo exhibition at the Museu Brasileiro da Escultura in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Thenceforth our focus has been in modern, postwar and contemporary art. Our inventory is comprised of masters and well-known artists from Europe, North America and Latin America. We buy the art works directly from the artists since we represent them. Based on our integrity and experience, our objective is to make the process of acquiring art an enriching and accessible experience for you, thus making art available to homes, offices and public places. We strongly believe that choosing the pieces with diligence and careful consideration have a positive impact on the space for which they are designed. Half Rest is a site-specific installation by artist Joe Mancuso that is both dynamic and rhythmical. Monumental in size, Mancuso’s Water Lilies envelop the exterior of the booth, inviting the viewer to experience the intricacy of nature and organic form. His sculpture, Poly Bouquet, sustains the movement and flow, as each delicate flower evokes a sense of space through meticulous attention to detail. Lastly, Mancuso’s painting Concerto resonates with rhythm, as ribbons of latex intertwine upon the canvas to create an all-encompassing work. Half Rest is a lyrical and awe-inspiring installation, which is reflected by Mancuso’s subtle, powerful works.

About the artist: Internationally known artist, Joe Mancuso, currently lives and works in Houston, Texas. He received his MFA from Indiana University and BFA from Colorado State University. Mancuso’s solo exhibitions have included the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; the El Paso Museum of Art; AR Contemporary, Milan, Italy; New York University; and Galveston Art Center. His group exhibitions have included the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH); Hillwood Art Museum, Brookeville, New York; ArtPace, San Antonio, Texas; the McKinney Avenue Contemporary (MAC), Dallas, Texas; Serio Tossi Contemporary, Florence, Italy; New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans, Louisiana; Art Cologne, Cologne, Germany; Galerie Rotoff, Karlsruhe, Germany; the Phoenix Art Museum; the Blaffer Gallery at the University of Houston; and Kiyo Hagashi Gallery, Los Angeles, California.

Along with a solo exhibit of recent paintings by rising talent Geoff Hippenstiel at the 2012 HFAF, the work of Austin-based Andy Coolquitt will be on view at the gallery’s permanent location (3917 Main Street). “The mosaiclike painting has the opulent richness of a Byzantine icon, or a Klimt. From certain angles in the gallery, the metallic paintings bounced back the Texas sunlight until the brightness of the reflection was the only thing you could see of them. Not the least of Hippenstiel’s achievements is his brilliant orchestration of movement from paint to light.” – Raphael Rubinstein, Art In America May 2012

Angela Flowers established her first gallery in 1970 on Lisle Street in London’s West End. In the 1980s, the gallery was one of the first to open in London’s East End, in a former laundry/fur storage facility in Hackney, and the space became known as Flowers East. Matthew Flowers, Angela’s son, took over day to day operations in 1989. In 1997, the gallery expanded further with a Los Angeles space, at Bergamot Station. There are now two gallery spaces in London: a West End premises on Cork Street opened in 2000 and in 2002 the gallery moved from Hackney into a 12,000 sq foot industrial space in Shoreditch, East London. The US business relocated in 2003 from LA to New York on Madison Avenue, and then in 2009 moved to West 20th street in Chelsea.

Kashya Hildebrand, Owner; Jolaine Frizzell, Director

Kashya Hildebrand founded her gallery in Geneva in 2001. Since 2004 the gallery has been located in the center of Zurich, featuring a large exhibition space. The main focus of the gallery lies in its dedication to the support and the representation of an international group of young, emerging artists through solo and group shows. The galleries artists challenge pre-conceived notions of nationality and cultural identity, creating an environment in which established norms become blurred and characterizations from seemingly contrasting cultures occupy the same visual space. This juxtaposition leads to a simultaneous renunciation and acceptance of the traditional and the contemporary, creating an environment that is in constant flux. Religion, politics, nationality and culture are treated as the foundation of identity, depicted and disseminated to varying degrees. Through painting, collage, sculpture, photography and installation work the artists convey the contestations of the contemporary political landscape.

González y González promotes, through solo and group exhibitions, the work of international contemporary artists, with a special emphasis on a group of Latin American and Chilean artists, some well-known, others becoming so, whose work’s common thread is its reflective character relating to the history of art and to social, political and historical processes. González y González presents a space for the promotion and reflection on the wide diversity of artistic practice today - from video to drawing, photography and object-based work at the heart of the debate on the complex relationships that absorb contemporary society.

Pictura Gallery specializes in contemporary fine art photography with a focus on color imagery with a strong formal sensibility and narrative. We are drawn to work that resonates with the viewer first on an emotional level. Often we find that work of this type has a more subtle sensibility—it doesn’t reveal itself right away in one viewing. It makes you want to look again—to really examine it and understand it. The gallery generally features two artists at a time. From a curatorial standpoint, this allows us to focus on the expression of a concept more fully and to create new perspectives in the way the audience views the artwork. When we craft our exhibitions, it is important to present our audience with thoughtful, dynamic and engaging work. The best imagery, and the type that we strive to share with our viewers, reveals a new sense of profundity and depth into a subject that may not have been obvious before.

Pristine Galerie opened the doors to its actual headquarters in Monterrey, Mexico with a clear and defined mission: to promote the artistic creation of first-rate contemporary visual producers, both emerging and established. The gallery has worked from its beginning to function as the catalyst and vehicle of an interaction between Monterrey and the most important institutional and commercial platforms of contemporary art in America, Europe and Asia. In a 6500 ft2 four stage building, the gallery blends elements of avant-garde design and contemporary artworks by its many artists, constantly rotating them as the temporary exhibitions change in two of its floors, where it usually showcases two exhibitions simultaneously, generating an unusual dialogue between the artworks of the artists being shown, national and international, for which the Gallery’s Board has chosen to work with featured curators, who put together for Pristine Galerie world-class art exhibitions.

Schroeder Romero & Shredder, is a partnership seeking to redefine the way you look at contemporary art. Shedding the old model of what once defined a contemporary art gallery, Schroeder Romero & Shredder opened an exciting new space in 2010 where two exhibitions will run side by side, encouraging a unique dialogue between the past and present. This new hybrid program will be comprised of an exhibition of a contemporary artist’s work buttressed by an exhibition of related historical material, responding to, or providing a new, deeper context. The possibilities are endless—and at times wildly unexpected—as we connect the multifarious dots of art history in exciting and surprising ways.

Situated in an Upper West Side Townhouse in Manhattan, the Gallery offers an intimate, personal viewing experience, contrary to the more formal presentations of art in typical white box galleries. Eley opened the Gallery to attract a new, untapped audience for contemporary art and to provide regular gallerygoers with a fresh, alternative way to enjoy art. The Gallery focuses on contemporary art by emerging and mid-career artists, who work in a range of media, from paint to photography to sculpture and print. Solo and group exhibitions showcase abstract as well as figurative work from a diverse body of artists from the U.S., Asia, Latin America and Europe. Valley House Gallery & Sculpture Garden was founded in 1954 by Margaret and Donald Vogel. The Modernist-style gallery, and 4+ acre sculpture garden, is located in its original North Dallas location. The gallery represents established and emerging contemporary artists working in inventive ways with timeless media. Many of our artists are connected in diverse ways to Texas. The gallery also deals in 19th and 20th century American and European art, and specializes in reintroducing significant Early Texas art. In addition to our own program, we curate exhibitions for museums, publish scholarly catalogs and exhibit in national art fairs. In 1964, Valley House Gallery became the first Texas gallery invited to join the ADAA (Art Dealers Association of America) and also maintains memberships in CADD (Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas) and DADA (Dallas Art Dealers Association.) Along with Director Laura Green, Cheryl and Kevin Vogel continue to build on the tradition forged by his parents.
