Welcome to the Fourth Annual Houston Fine Art Fair!This year again, HFAF has produced a globally-reaching art fair for this international city. The fair presents a range of high-caliber art from contemporary masters to today’s rising stars, with valuable treasures available for every budget level. I invite you to explore the amazing booth displays created by our participating galleries from across the globe.

I am pleased to present a fair reflecting the collecting trends of this multicultural city. Galleries have traveled in from 17 countries to present their finest works for acquisition. We present a wide ranging and impeccable selection from Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Witness our eye-popping installations form Mexico and Egypt.

I want to congratulate our 2014 honorees. Anne Tucker, who founded the photography department of MFAH over 38 years ago, and built it into one of the most revered in the nation, with a permanent collection over 28,000 photographs is the well-earned recipient of the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award. She will be interviewed onstage by FotoFest International’s esteemed co-founder Wendy Watriss. We recognize the contributions of David E. Brauer, the longtime head of the History of Art Department at the Glassell School of the MFAH with The Illumination Award for Achievement in Arts Education. He will be interviewed by a former student, Paper City’s Catherine Anspon.

HFAF salutes the city’s remarkable 50-year climb to national art prominence by creating the Houston Artists Hall of Fame @ HFAF. Under the astute curatorial direction of Patricia Covo Johnson, Houston’s prolific art critic, 15 local artists have been inducted in this monochromatic display.

We are pleased to present the HFAF ArtSpeak lecture series presented CultureMap Houston. We present five insightful panels meant to inform and inspire. And do browse the Paper City Bookstore filled with art world must-reads.

Thank you to our local cultural and civic organizations for partnering with HFAF, and to our preeminent Steering and distinguished Host Committees for their on-going support and effort. I want to recognize local arts patron and gallery owner Deborah Colton, who has dedicated countless hours to HFAF as the Fair’s Chairperson. This year’s edition of HFAF would not be at the level it is without her significant contributions and ongoing inspiration in establishing and building this international art fair that the city can call its own.

Welcome Fairgoers! Houston is a great city which has been built on a solid foundation of our past, while continuing to welcome the future. As the city thrives and becomes one of the most important international centers in the US, the arts become more dynamic, including the growth of excellent museums, non-profits and private galleries.

This year’s edition of HFAF reflects what the city was built on, who we are now and where we are going. Patricia Covo Johnson’s “Hall of Fame” recognizes some of the artists that have made an impact in the art world coming out of Houston. HFAF’s programming and installations speak to what an exciting and international city Houston is. Over 17 countries are represented at HFAF, between the exhibiting galleries and public installations - which are traveling in from as far as Egypt with a video installation exhibited at the 2013 Venice Biennale, to a beautiful interactive piece from Mexico City. Our Panels this year also reflect Houston art history but also have an international focus.

We are pleased to honor the Asia Society - Texas Center as the Opening Night beneficiary. I want to recognize our Steering Committee and Host Committee for their time and commitment to expanding the HFAF with the 2014 edition. These individuals with diverse backgrounds represent what makes Houston such a “City of the Future” and international city of the arts. We thank them for their dedication and belief in what the HFAF can be for all of us.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Houston Fine Art Fair for focusing the eyes of the art world on Houston by continuing to build an international art fair here. Ultimately, this activity serves to expand, stimulate and promote a deeper interest in the visual arts throughout the region and also helps Houston work toward becoming the national and international “destination city of the arts” it deserves to be.

The worthy inaugural recipient will be art historian/scholar/lecturer David E. Brauer whose 36-year career teaching art history at the MFAH Museum School, now the Glassell School of Art, began in 1976, and spans — and impacted — several generations. Brauer’s tantalizing knowledge and insights will be explored onstage at the Fair during a Q&A conducted by former student PaperCity‘s Catherine D. Anspon.

First Look, FotoFest’s Collector Group, will tour the show floor with their internal experts and end in the VIP Lounge for a private reception.

The Lifetime Achievement Award annually recognizes an individual who has had a profound and lasting effect on the development of the visual arts in Houston. HFAF is proud to announce the 2014 Lifetime Achievement honoree will be the Museum of Fine Arts Houston’s Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator Anne Tucker. Fairgoers will have the chance to meet and interact with Ms. Tucker at her award presentation where she will be interviewed onstage in the HFAF Theater by FotoFest International Co-founder Wendy Watriss.

Pham An Hai was born in 1967 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Since 1992 he has had works presented in solo and group shows in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Luxembourg, Belgium, Thailand, USA, Japan, Italy, Korea and the UK. He has works in the permanent collections of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and the National Gallery Petronas Malaysia.

2-3p: Arab Art in the Middle East Today

Moderator, Wendy Watriss, Co-Founder of FotoFestExtending from the ground-breaking presentation of Arab media-based art and photography done by FotoFest in Houston this year, the Houston Fine Arts Fair is initiating a panel discussion about the development of contemporary Arab visual art from the Middle East and North Africa in the past 15 years. The panel will discuss the work of leading Arab painters, sculptors, printmakers and media artists, as well as the diverse genres they are using and the issues that they address in their art. The discussion will present an overview of the creative, commercial and educational infrastructures that have developed in recent years in the Middle East and the way they are supporting creative art in this part of the world. Panelists include Omar Donia, publisher of the leading Middle East art journal Contemporary Practices, Visual Arts from the Middle East; Khaled Hafez, internationally known painter, videographer and multi-media artist from Egypt.

Curators discuss their role in educating their unique audience while remaining relevant to a larger public, donors and other museums. Of particular interest is how curators strike a balance between institutional history, community responsibility and global concerns. Panelists include: Miranda Lash, The Speed

Art Museum; Toby Kamps, The Menil Collection; and Kevin Ruben Jacobs, The Goss-Michel Foundation. Moderated by Chad Alligood, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

Friday 2-3p: Museum vs. Individual Collecting Strategies (Theater)

Curators discuss the considerations involved when acquiring new works of art for their institution, and how this may or may not differ from individual collecting approaches. Topics include the differences between building a collection through donations, collectors groups, with museum funds and the role of the board. Panelists include: Chad Alligood, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art; Shirley Reece-Hughes, Amon Carter Museum of American Art; Gavin Delahunty, Dallas Museum of Art. Moderated by Elise Arnoult Miller, Independent Curator/Advisor.

Friday 3:30-4:30p: In the Legacy of Peggy Guggenheim, Collecting from the Female Perspective (Theather)

Join CultureMap’s Editor at Large Shelby Hodge as she leads a lively and informative discussion on fine art collecting with four of Houston’s leading philanthropists. Panelists include Jereann Chaney, Anita Weber-Smith, Lucinda Loya and Judy Nyquist. Moderated by Shelby Hodge.

Saturday 1-2p: Trends in Moving Image Art (Theater)

The panel will focus largely on recent developments in the art of the moving image, and how these developments fit within a larger framework of modern and contemporary art history. Panelists include: Miranda Lash, The Speed Art Museum; Mary Magsamen, Aurora Picture Show; Rachel Cook, DiverseWorks. Moderated by Artist Khaled Hafez.

INSTALLATIONS – HOUSTON ARTISTS HALL OF FAME @ HFAF

Curator’s Statement

When I was asked to curate this exhibition for HFAF, I knew it would be chal-lenge, that it would be impossible to include all the extraordinary artists I would want to, but also that future Hall of Fame exhibitions would expand this inau-gural roster. As a way of introduction, I drew a few parameters: Artists who are (or were) Houstonian by choice or birthplace, active in the city since the 1970s and 1980s, and with a strong exhibition history. Individually and together they re-cast the city’s contemporary art landscape during those years on foundations laid in previous decades. Propelled by the city’s economic growth and social openness, they could give full rein to their visions, develop their careers, mentor and inspire through teaching and by example. By the mid-1980s, Houston was lauded as art’s Third Coast and it embraced a new generation.

The vast aesthetic individuality evades categorization and most of the artists rep-resented work in multiple media and techniques. A focus on works on paper in a limited range of neutral tones with splashes of color offers overall cohesion as selected sculptures add visual and dimensional counterpoints. There are a few surprises as well. Several of the works reside in private collections and publically

invisible, like the powerful mandala comprised of AK47s by Mel Chin. Others reveal a less known aspect of an artist’s creativity, like James Surls, in-ternationally renowned as a sculptor, here is repre-sented as the superb draftsman that he also is.

John Biggers (1924-2001) reinvigorated the an-cient art of mural painting beginning with fully de-veloped drawings as detailed guides. Jim Love (1927-2005) created humorous assemblages from scrap materials and welded steel into meticulous, often poignant vignettes of intimate scale as well as large public sculpture. Luis Jimenez (1940-2006) was a sculptor and also a powerful draftsman. Lucas Johnson (1940-2002) was a painter and re-nowned draftsman.

conceive public projects and do performances, also build sculptures and explore unconventional drawing mate-rials. Terrell James’s works on paper are spare and fluid me-diations. Karin Broker, on the other hand, tells a story in fa-miliar, often domestic symbols.

Joseph Havel’s bronze speaks of Classic refinement. Jesse Lott manipulates discarded rebar and wire to shape natu-ralistic or imaginary animal and human figures sometimes in astonishing scale. Sharon Kopriva has reduced the complicated assemblages of earlier work to cast bronze modelings of her beloved Peruvian hairless dogs.

George Krause, who has pursued classic gelatin silver prints, and MANUAL, the collaborative of Ed Hill and Suzanne Bloom, pioneers in digital imaging and con-structs, represent photography, a major component of the city’s art community. And the street-worthy Fruitmobile holds an iconic place in this car-loving city as ambassador of the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art.

About the Curator

From 1981-2007, Patricia Covo Johnson served as the distinguished arts critic of the Houston Chronicle. Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in criticism in 1991 and 1994, Ms. Johnson wrote Contemporary Art in Texas, which was published in 1995. She also wrote a biography of her late husband, Lucas Johnson, published by the Houston Artists Fund, which includes essays by Walter Hopps and Edmund Pillsbury. She has contributed essays to various exhibition catalogues, most recently, Mel Chin Rematch, organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art, 2014; and An Oasis of Horror in a Desert of Boredom, Visual Centre for Contemporary Art, Dublin, Ireland, 2013.

This exhibition presents works by four top Korean artists, using contemporary avenues to express the culture’s more traditional imagery and history. These prize-winning and increasingly popular artists are capturing collectors’ imaginations, recording strong sales and grabbing museum attention in Korea, Japan and China. In October 2014, the Beijing Art Fair will present Suk Chul-Joo and Kim Ho- Deuk as their invited guest artists.

About the Artists:

Suk Chul-Joo

Through this exhibition, Suk Chul-Joo explores the path for the future of Korean painting and advocates for living in the constantly changing modern world while paying respects to nature, tradition and value of our own once more.

Kim Keun-Joong

Early in his career KIM created wall paintings inspired by Koguryo Kingdom and Chinese Dun Huang followed by a period of minimalism. Since 2005, he has produced works exploring the culture and impact of the rich and noble, and once national flower of China, the peony.

Jung Jong-Mee

The ‘paper woman’ combines the natural components of Korean women, using notable figures and common characteristics, with the material properties of ‘hanji’. ‘Hanji’ includes an ambient natural color that conveys the viewer with a mild impression. Jong-Mee has depicted important, historical Korean women including Hwang Jin-yi and the Empress Myeong-seong in her works. She is the winner of the prestigious Lee Jung Sup award, and is in the public collections of The National Museum of Modern Art, Seoul Municipal Museum of Art, Busan Municipal Museum of Art., and others

Kim Ho-Deuk

The ink paintings Kim creates only with base material, brush and water ink reflects both the western style of meticulous observation and the East Asian concept of grasping emotion and atmosphere of man and nature.He is a member of the prestigious Korean Art Project of the Korean Art Museum Association. He has won several distinguished art honors, including the Kumbok Culture Award Art Prize (2008) and the Lee Joong Seop Art Prize (2004). He is in the public collections of National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Daejeon Museum of Art, with past exhibits at the Bongsam Cultural Center, Kumho Art Museum and the Ungno Lee Museum of Art.

This interactive installation by artist Nacho Rodriguez Bach explores the relationship between the 88 constellations and the 88 piano keys by linking the piano keyboard to a light installation where each note lights up a constellation. Asterismos is the Greek word for the drawings that identify each constellation which the artist reinterprets by using curves instead of the traditional straight lines that link the stars together.

Houston’s love affair with movement, transformation and reinvention is at the heart of Transported + Renewed, a bold mix of community-based and contemporary art projects organized by Houston Arts Alliance in collaboration with local artists and community partners. Chai Gallery is introducing a diverse group of three artists, [take out a] painter SUH Yoonhee, sculptor PARK Hyojung and photographer KIM Hongsik. SUH paints with unique colors by creating dyes from fermented herbs to show oriental artworks and healing art. PARK uses jade and bronze in her works. The different shades of jade reveal both cold and warm feelings. In its simplest form, revealed by the artist’s minimal manipulation, the artwork generates its own aesthetic quality and shows the ideal beauty of Korea–simplicity. KIM uses metal to create a three dimensional aspect to his photography, stimulating audiences’ senses to not only depend on their visual sense. Walter Wickiser Gallery, Inc. was established in 1992 and is currently located in Fine Art Building in Chelsea. As the son of the artist and art-educator Ralph Wickiser, formerly Chairman of the Graduate Art Program at Pratt Institute from 1962 -1978, Walter Wickiser was born and raised in the American art world amongst such renowned modern artists as Franz Kline, Jacob Lawrence, George McNeil and Stephen Pace. His experience at a very early age with those artists provided a special mentoring and education which proved very beneficial to his career as an art dealer. Wickiser’s career as an art dealer formally began in 1990 in Soho, NY when he became the first director of the first gallery in the United States from mainland China. Walter Wickiser Gallery, Inc. was established in Soho, New York, 1992, and relocated to 210 Eleventh Avenue, Chelsea, New York in 2005. The gallery’s main focus is the contemporary painting of mid-career artists of American, Asian-American and European decent.
