“How Do I Help My Child Succeed in Math at BJHS?”
Traits of Successful Math Students
• Does not give up easily.• Follows directions well.• Shows all work when completing problems.• Has multiplication facts memorized.• Has basic mathematical foundation on which to build
(i.e. understand fraction/decimal concepts and operations)
• References notes when help is needed.• Participates and asks questions in class
TEXTBOOK vs. Interactive Notebooks
• BJHS teachers use Cornell Notes to engage students in meaningful note taking.
• These notes are used much like a textbook and should be referenced for nightly homework.
• Examples that EXACTLY match the homework problem will not always be given; however procedures from these examples can be followed to complete the homework.
Math Practices• The Common Core Standards call for 8 Standards for
Mathematical Practice that describe a variety of expertise that BJHS teachers will work to develop in students.
• These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education.
• These 8 Mathematical Practices will be taught and assessed along with math curriculum.
