You Can Fix It Before it Happens, Acronis True Image Home 2010 | Tutorial Part 1

Imagine working on a document that you have spent hours on, you shut down to take a break,

come back, try and restart your computer and suddenly, you find you can’t re-boot, can’t

access your hard drive, or your data. Another scenario could be, everything is running

smoothly, you get a Virus, Mal-ware, or Spy-ware and suddenly your system freezes and or

comes to a grinding halt; You try and re-boot and can’t, or, your hard drive just simply dies.

Take a moment and think about what you would do in either of these situations? These are

real world every day scenarios when it comes to owning a computer. But, “You Can Fix It Before It Happens!”. This simple

procedure will have you up and running again in a matter of minutes rather than hours or days with your operating

system, all of your data and applications that you had on your original drive before your hard drive failed.

I would like to introduce one definition of the word “Clone,” “Clone,” defined by the Merriam Webster-Dictionary.

Definition 2: defined by the Merriam Webster-Dictionary. Definition 2: “One”, that appears to be a copy of an original

form: “Duplicate”, a clone of a personal computer, (PC), in this case a Hard Drive Clone as it pertains to this tutorial.

I will be using a product called Acronis True Image Home 2010, (an earlier version), to demonstrate this tutorial. By

learning to use this information and software, you will be able to have an EXACT duplicate “Hard Drive Clone”. This

will essentially create a Hard Drive Clone of your hard drive with all of its Windows’ Operating System’s applications, files

and folders fully installed, preventing this tedious task of having to start the installation of a new system.

Just think of learning to use this software as an insurance policy, that will prevent hours and or days of having to reinstall

your system should your hard drive fail. Eventually, all hard drives will fail! What will you do when it does? Will you be

ready? “You Can Fix It Before It Happens!”

I. A Word Of Caution Before We Get Started:

Checking Your System For Viruses, Malware and Spyware

http://youcanfixit.org/ (2 of 11)3/23/2012 12:18:48 PM

Page 3: How to Clone a Hard Drive - Http___youcanfixit

You Can Fix It Before it Happens, Acronis True Image Home 2010 | Tutorial Part 1

No, I am not trying to sell you another Anti-Virus, Anti-

Malware, or Anti-Spyware Product.•

I just wanted to mention briefly, the importance of checking

your system prior to setting•

up your clone.•

•When you clone your hard drive you will be getting an EXACT

duplicate of your original hard drive, with its files, folders,

applications and Operating System, therefore if there are any

Viruses, Malware, or Spyware on that drive, it/they WILL get

transferred to your clone as well.•

•This is just a word of caution for you to inspect your system

with whatever Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware, or Anti-Spyware product you already are using. •

•If you have a freshly installed system you needn’t worry because it is a new system. If your system isn’t new just run an

Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware, or Anti-Spyware CHECK prior to cloning and you should be good to go.

II. My Purpose and Intent | What Will You Do When Your Hard Drive Fails? |

My purpose of this Article/Tutorial, is to share my information and

experiences over a 10 year period that have worked for me in a number

of instances. I want to share this with a Newbie or Intermediate PC user

by showing YOU HOW YOU CAN “Clone” your Pc’s Hard Drive before it

fails, in order to prevent that dark, dismal day of having to not only lose

applications and data but

preventing YOU from reinstalling YOUR entire system.

It is my intent to show you HOW. I will provide you with a Step-By-Step Tutorial with screen shots explaining exactly how

“You Can Fix It ” in order to create your own “Hard Drive Clone”.

Tutorial Level:

This tutorial is primarily geared toward the “The New User” , INTERMEDIATES, and/or those who have NEVER

CLONED a Hard Drive before.

Warning: This tutorial is lengthy and detailed which I have broken down to contain five parts.

These Six Parts Will Demonstrate The Following:

Part 1, “Preparing A New Hard Drive”

Part 2, “Prior To Adding A New Hard Drive”

Part 3, “Adding A New Hard Drive”

Part 4, “Partitioning A New Hard Drive”

Part 5, “A Word of Caution”, then, How To Clone A Hard Drive”

Part 6, “How To Clone A Hard Drive” , continued to the end

III. System and Software Requirements for This Tutorial

Required Platform and Operating System:

This tutorial is for a PC Desktop Tower or Laptop platform, running any Windows Operating System compatible with this

product. Apple Macintosh computers or their Laptops are not compatible with this product.

I have successfully used this version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 on all five of my tower work stations as well as my

laptop. (The Photo above are not my Pc Towers).

Although this tutorial uses this version of Acronis True Image Home 2010, other versions of Acronis

True Image Home are very similar in nature. The principles I am demonstrating in this tutorial I feel

will hold true for MOST versions.

It is suggested but not madatory that one have or purchase a USB Enclosure to temporarily install their new hard drive

during this process.

If you are ready, we will begin with Part 1 of 6 of this tutorial,

“Preparing A New Hard Drive”.

• Preparing A NEW Hard Drive To Add To The System

Step 1: Gathering Hard Drive Label Information:

http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-1-of-6 (2 of 6)3/23/2012 12:20:17 PM

Page 14: How to Clone a Hard Drive - Http___youcanfixit

How To Clone A Hard Drive Part 1 of 6 | You Can Fix It Before It Happens

This is Part 1 of 6 of the tutorial. My example above shows a Western Digital Hard Drive Label that will show the

following steps, how to prepare a NEWLY purchased Western Digital Hard Drive PRIOR to “Adding It” to the

System.•

Before performing any Tasks to your New drive it is very important that you write down the following

information from your HARD DRIVE LABEL:

••Step 1. As per the screen shot example above, from your NEW HARD DRIVE LABEL, write down the Make, Size,

Serial Number, and Model Number of YOUR NEW drive.•

•In the label example above, my information for my particular drive is indicated by the following:•

http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-1-of-6 (3 of 6)3/23/2012 12:20:17 PM

Page 15: How to Clone a Hard Drive - Http___youcanfixit

How To Clone A Hard Drive Part 1 of 6 | You Can Fix It Before It Happens

The Magenta circle and arrow indicate the MAKE to be a Western Digital hard drive. Circled just below in Green with an

arrow is the SIZE, which is 160GB. Below that, circled in Yellow with an arrow is the Serial Number. At the very bottom,

MOST IMPORTANTLY, circled in Blue with an arrow, is the MODEL number which is, MDL: WD1600AAJS-

00L7A0.

Additionally, the reason for noting the Serial Number is in case there is a problem with your new drive you will need to

contact the Manufacturer or company for a replacement. They will always require you to locate it in order to replace your

warranty drive should it be defective.

As we continue with this tutorial, you will see the importance as to why this Label Information is EXTREMELY important.

It will enable you to keep organized and avoid confusion when it comes time to choosing your NEW hard drive for a

selected Task using Acronis. Additionally, this label information will ultimately prevent you from choosing a wrong,

existing drive which can happen very easily if you don’t have this information at hand as well as preventing the destruction

of information if you were to choose the wrong drive. Please continue here to Part 2 of 6 of this tutorial.

• Prior To Adding A New Hard Drive To The System

Step 2: Temporarily Installing The New Hard Drive Into A USB Enclosure:

We will now temporarily install the new drive into a USB External Enclosure in order to help prevent selecting the wrong

drive while ADDING it to your system. This is strongly suggested, but not mandatory.

This will help prevent you from choosing the wrong drive to ADD, because the system will automatically flag it as a USB

drive in the “NEW Hard Drive Selection WINDOW”. This will help you to CLEARLY differentiate between the NEW drive

MODEL you are about to ADD and the existing drive models that have already been added to your system.

Before we Begin to ADD our new hard drive, please install your NEW drive in either a USB EXTERNAL enclosure, (which

I strongly suggest), or in in one of your free drive bays that are available.

Please continue to Part 3 of 6 of this tutorial, “Adding A New Hard Drive”.

• Adding A New Hard Drive

Step 3: Launching Acronis True Image Home 2010:

Now that you have CLEARLY made note of YOUR necessary Hard Drive Label information and installed your drive in

either a USB External Enclosure or vacant drive bay, we can now SAFELY proceed to “Adding Your New Hard Drive”.

Locate YOUR Acronis True Image Home Application Icon and click or double click it to launch. An example of this http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-3-of-6-2 (2 of 14)3/23/2012 12:27:42 PM

As per the screen above, you will now get a Confirmation window.

This Confirmation window is an acknowledgment that you are about to

ADD•

a NEW Hard Drive.

Select “Yes” by clicking the “Yes” button, in order to continue the

process of adding•

your NEW drive.

This will now bring you to the “Add New Disk Wizard”, which

will say•

”Welcome to the Add New Disk Wizard!” in the window.

• Adding A New Hard Drive (contd.)

Step 6: “Add New Disk Wizard”, Welcome Window

After having Clicked “Yes” in the previous step, you are now in the “Add New Disk Wizard”, “Welcome to the Add

New Disk Wizard!” window.http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-3-of-6-2 (6 of 14)3/23/2012 12:27:42 PM

It says, “This Wizard will help you to add a new hard disk drive to your computer. You will be able to prepare the new hard

disk drive for using by creating and formatting new partitions on this hard disk”.

Click “Next” to continue unless for some reason you want to Cancel.

By clicking “Next” you will still continue to be in the “Add New Disk Wizard”.

The next screen will now say “Destination Hard Disk” in the window.

• “Adding A New Hard Drive”: (contd.)

Step 7: Still in the “Add New Disk Wizard” (contd.), this next screen is the

“Destination Hard Disk” Window.

Looking above in the “Destination Hard Disk” Window, toward the bottom of the screen, just above the Green Stripe,

you will see a Blue Hi-Lited line of information. This is for my NEW drive that I want to ADD. From Left to right, you will

see Disk 8, with a Capacity of 152.7 GB, a Model Number whose Model is: WD 1600AAJS-00L7A0, and whose

Interface indicates it to be a USB drive. Additionally there is a four digit number, 3E01 that follows which is not part of

the model number. This appears to be a four digit number allocated by the system which also helps to identify the new

drive that will be added.

Just below this, to the left is a Square Hard Drive Icon that shows a capacity of

152.7 GB. To the right of the square icon you notice a long, rectangular box that will say “Unallocated” at the bottom

left, under the Green Stripe with a hard drive capacity under that. (Mine says 152.7 GB). The Green Stripe at the top

indicates this is a NEW hard drive that is going to be ADDED.

Now notice in YOUR window, with a list of YOUR installed

hard drive(s).

1. Use the Capacity and Model Number from your Label Information to locate your new drive that you

want to ADD.

If you installed your new drive temporarily in a USB EXTERNAL enclosure, under the Interface column you will see USB

after the Model Number. This may help you to find and identify your new drive quicker that you want to ADD, especially

if there are no other USB drives connected.

2. When you find it, click once to select it.

A word of CAUTION, THIS IS A CRUCIAL STEP!

3. Please pay very close and careful attention to selecting your NEW Hard drive while properly identifying it with your

specific Model Number that you wrote down from your Label Information, otherwise you will permanently destroy all

information on the WRONGLY SELECTED DRIVE!!!

4. When you are certain of making the correct selection,

Click “Next” to continue.

We are still continuing in the “Add New Disk Wizard”. Your next window will now say, “Nonempty Destination

Hard Disk”.

• Adding A New Hard Drive: (contd.),

Add New Disk Wizard , (contd.),

Step 8: Nonempty Destination Hard Disk Window

In the “Nonempty Destination Hard Disk” window above, I always choose the Green, Radio button above top left,

choosing to “Delete partitions on the destination hard disk”. All partitions will be put back and duplicated once we

clone the new drive.

Please continue to Part 4 of 6 of this tutorial, “Creating A Partition”.

We are still continuing in the “Add New Disk Wizard”. Your next window will now say, “New Partition” window.

In the “New Partition” window, it says,”You can create new partition(s) in unallocated space”, which is what we want to

do for our new Hard Drive.

Furthermore, in the “New Partition” window, it also says, “If you have unallocated space on your hard disk you can

create partitions”. Go to the bottom of that window with the Blue Circle that has a small green check mark inside. Beside it

it says

“Create the new partition in unallocated space”.

If it isn’t checked by default already, “Check the Create the new partition…. box” circled in Blue, located at the

bottom of this window, then press Next.

We are still continuing in the “Add New Disk Wizard”. Your next window will now say, “Free space selection”

window.

In the “Free Space Selection” window above, it says “Choose Free Space On Your Hard Disk”.

It then says “You can create a partition in unallocated space only.”

“Please select unallocated space, then press next.”

1. In our example above, under the Disk 8 heading, located left, this drive is selected and says “unallocated 152.7 GB

unallocated“, hi-lit in blue.

Make sure you select the “Unallocated” drive with the (Green Stripe)

that is toward the top of the window “above”. Your drive may be in a different position in your window depending on how

many drives you have installed in your system.

2. Then click “Next”.

By doing so you will be choosing the space indicated on your new hard drive

to be partitioned.

We are still continuing in the “Add New Disk Wizard”. Your next window will

now say, “File System Type” window.

• Creating A New Partition (contd.)

Add New Disk Wizard, (contd.),

Step 11: File System Type window where you will select Your desired file system

There are three different choices of File Systems available to choose from:

They are NTSF, FAT32, and FAT16.

Please notice the “Description” area at the bottom of the above screen:

http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-4-of-6-2 (6 of 21)3/23/2012 12:28:18 PM

Page 44: How to Clone a Hard Drive - Http___youcanfixit

How To Clone A Hard Drive Part 4 of 6 | You Can Fix It Before It Happens

For the NTSF file system the description says, “Window NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP native file

system. Choose it if you are using these operating systems. Note that Windows 95/98/ME and Dos cannot access NTSF

partitions.

Furthermore, if you are running any of the following Operating Systems such as

Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, (any version of XP) then continue

on to Step 1. below.

If you are running Windows 95/98/Me/ and DOS you will have to choose either

of the remaining two FAT file systems, as these operating systems cannot

access NTSF.

For the purpose of this tutorial we will only use and choose NTSF.

1. On the left, toward the top, select the “Green, Radio Button”, NTFS, which is most common, unless you have a

reason to select either of the other two file systems.

2. Click “Next” after selecting the “NTSF Green Radio Button”.

We are still continuing in the “Add New Disk Wizard”. Your next window will now say, “Partition Type” window.

• Creating A New Partition (contd.),

In the “Partition Type” window above,

1. Located above top, and to the left, under “Select the type of partition”, we want to select the top, Green, Radio

Button, which says “Primary Partition”.

Since we will be Cloning our original System Boot drive, we want to select this

“Primary Partition” option.

2. Click “Next” to continue.

In the “Size and Position” window above, you will notice the example showing my NEW hard drive, labeled (I.),

located in its long and rectangular box, with a Yellow Stripe at the top. This Drive has a Partition Size of

152.7 GB. This partition size also reflects the final size after formatting a 160gb drive. You will notice that it takes 7.3

GB during formatting which gives me a final size of 152.7 GB for my particular drive size. Yours will probably be different

depending on the size and manufacturer of the drive you purchase.

In this tutorial we are not concerned with setting the Unallocated Space Before,

or After amounts as they default to 0 for my hard drive configuration containing

the one partition.

Click “Next” to continue.

We are still continuing in the “Add New Disk Wizard”. Your next window will now say,

“Partition Label” window.

Step 14: Partition Label Window

The window above reflects the “Partition Label” window. I leave the label blank because we are cloning a new drive

from an existing boot drive. The new drive, once it is cloned, will take on the label name of the original boot drive used to

clone this.

In the “New Partition” window above, “You can create new partitions

in unallocated space” We are not going to do that in this tutorial.

1. Just Click “Next” to continue.

We are still continuing in the “Add New Disk Wizard”. Your next window will now say,

“Operations Review” window.

• Creating Your New Partition (contd.)

Add New Disk Wizard, (contd.),

Step 16: Operations Review window

In the “Operations Review” window above, this window says, “Acronis

True Image is ready to perform operations with physical data.

Here is the list of these operations”

What does this mean?

This window reflects the information for “Creating Partition” :

1. The hard disk you chose to add, represented here by the number “8″, (Which is Disk 8 in this example system). 2.

http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-4-of-6-2 (14 of 21)3/23/2012 12:28:18 PM

Page 52: How to Clone a Hard Drive - Http___youcanfixit

How To Clone A Hard Drive Part 4 of 6 | You Can Fix It Before It Happens

The hard drive letter it assigns to the new chosen drive, which in this case is represented by “I”. 3. The File system

chosen to partition this drive which we said is NTFS. 4. The Volume Label we said we would leave blank. 5. The size

indicated is 152.7 GB, (this pertains to the partition size of this 160 GB drive example). (160gb -7.3gb =

152.7gb = Shrinkage due to Partitioning and Formatting).

Word of Caution!

This is the last opportunity here that we have to review this information to insure it is what we intended

to choose for the desired format and partitioning of our new drive clone.

Prior to clicking “Proceed” in this step, please carefully review this information when you get to the

“Operations Review” Window, when preparing to add your new drive.

1. After you are certain that this information window reflects all the parameters that you selected in the previous steps of

this tutorial, then Click the “Proceed” button.

This will be the final operation for adding your new hard drive prior

to Cloning.

Should you select the WRONG drive, you will destroy all of the data information on it!

The next window will be the “Operations Progress” window.

Step 17: “Operations Progress” window

• Creating Your New Partition (contd.)

http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-4-of-6-2 (15 of 21)3/23/2012 12:28:18 PM

How To Clone A Hard Drive Part 4 of 6 | You Can Fix It Before It Happens

In the “Operations Progress” window above, this window simply shows that your selected operations are being

processed in order to PARTITION, FORMAT, and ADD your new drive to your system.

Step 18: “Information“ window

• New Disk Was Successfully Added

http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-4-of-6-2 (16 of 21)3/23/2012 12:28:18 PM

“New disk was successfully added”

The window above is the last window prior to cloning our drive. This “Information” window indicates that your New

Hard Disk has been successfully Partitioned, Formatted, and ADDED to your system and is ready to CLONE.

Now that we have successfully completed adding our New Hard drive,

we are now ready to CLONE it.

1. Prior to doing so, if you have temporarily installed your new drive in an EXTERNAL USB enclosure, leave it there

until this cloning process is complete.

2. Now Reboot your computer.

3. Tip: After you reboot your system double click your “My Computer” icon to

insure your new drive shows up. You should now see it in addition to your other drives should you have multiple drives

that have already been installed prior to adding this new one.

4. I actually drag copy any file to the new drive just to test it to insure it is set up and added to the system properly.

http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-4-of-6-2 (17 of 21)3/23/2012 12:28:18 PM

Page 55: How to Clone a Hard Drive - Http___youcanfixit

How To Clone A Hard Drive Part 4 of 6 | You Can Fix It Before It Happens

5. Then delete the test file.

You don’t have to do steps 3-5, it is just an added insurance that I like to take to insure the new drive is set up and added to

the system properly.

Please continue to Part 5 of 6 of this tutorial, “A Word of Caution”. and finally, “How To Clone A Hard Drive”.

• A Word of Caution:

Prior To Cloning Your New Hard Drive:

With your (Old), original hard drive still installed, please inspect your system for any Viruses, Malware, or Spyware with

the Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware software you have already installed on your system. If you do this prior to starting your

cloning process and come up clean, you should be able to now clone your new drive safely and should be good to go.

If you have a new system in place, or you just purchased your computer, you needn’t worry because it is a new system.

Your new disk is now ready for CLONING.

Clone Mode, (in white at the top):

There are only two clone modes and it says the following:

“You can choose between either fully “Automated or

Manual Clone Modes”.

Just below that it says the following:

“Select the hard disk clone mode. You can find the description of your selection below. Press NEXT when ready to

proceed”.

In this tutorial we will use ONLY the “Automated Mode”. Choose the default at the top which says “Automatic”. It

has a Green Radio button

which should already have been selected.

When you select one of the two hard disk clone modes, you can find a full description of your selection below, at the

bottom of the Clone Mode Window.

In the screen shot example above, if you look toward the bottom of the window, in the middle, it will say “Description”.

Then further down for Automatic Mode it will say the following:

“Description”

Automatic mode is used for hard disk cloning. All your partitions from the old hard disk will be copied

to the new one in few simple steps and make your new hard disk bootable. All your partitions will be

automatically resized to fit the new hard disk. Note that you have to remove the old hard disk when

data moving is completed. Suitable for most users.

Disk Clone Wizard Window (contd.)

Step 24: Source Hard Disk Window

In the “Source Hard Disk” window above, select your “old hard disk” which is your current drive that has your

windows operating system.

If you notice Disk 3 in the window above is Hi-Lit in Blue and corresponds to the Yellow Stripe Hard Disk that says

“XP System (C:), 152.7 GB, NTFS, Maxtor Drive, Model Number: 6Y160M0 Drive, System Identification, http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-5-of-6-2 (9 of 21)3/23/2012 12:28:51 PM

four digit number, YAR5″.

Yours will say whatever your Operating System is, and the size of your current (old) drive.

This is called your “SOURCE DISK”, your original (old) drive that you will clone to the NEW drive you just added

to your system.

Ideally you will be cloning your old drive size of 152.7 GB which was formatted to NTFS file system to your new drive

of 152.7 GB.

Note the NTFS file system which we selected earlier when we added the new drive to our system. When you clone your

old drive to your new drive, your new drive will take on “ALL” of that drive’s characteristics, hence, the word “CLONE”.

Select your (Current), (Old), Source Drive that contains your Windows Operating System now and Click “NEXT” to

continue.

Step 25: Destination Hard Disk window

Page 69: How to Clone a Hard Drive - Http___youcanfixit

Destination Hard Disk:

In the window above, at the top, it says “Select the destination hard disk from the list below”. You will notice in

this instance the destination hard disk is Disk 8, 152.7 GB, Model Number: WDC WD 1600AAJS-00L7A0

followed by four digits, 3E01 that the system allocates for identification purposes.

We know this based on gathering all of the label information on your new hard drive that we did at the very beginning of

this tutorial. Now hopefully you can see the relevance and importance of gathering that information. Furthermore, that is

also why I had recommended installing your New Destination hard drive into an External USB enclosure for this

entire cloning process. I find it to be an added insurance against selecting the wrong hard drive.http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-5-of-6-2 (11 of 21)3/23/2012 12:28:51 PM

Page 70: How to Clone a Hard Drive - Http___youcanfixit

How To Clone A Hard Drive Part 5 of 6 | You Can Fix It Before It Happens

Furthermore, regarding the “Destination Hard Disk” window above, when you choose your new hard drive that you

just added, your Disk Number will most likely be different from mine, depending on how many other drives you have

installed in your system.

This new drive you select from the list above will become your new Clone. It will become your current drive that will

contain the operating system, with all the data and applications that were on your original source drive, (your old drive).

This new drive, (the destination drive), will become an EXACT Clone of that original Source Drive.

(Your Old Drive).

After you have selected your NEW “Destination Drive” in the above window list, click “NEXT” to continue.

In the “Non-Empty Destination Hard Disk” window above it says:

“You have already chosen a hard disk that already contains some partitions.

(This pertains to the Newly Added Hard Disk that we just added to our system).

Furthermore, it says “The destination drive you have chosen contains some partitions that might have useful data. The

operation is possible only if the destination hard disk is empty. In order to proceed with the operation, you should either

allow Acronis True Image to delete all the partitions on the destination hard disk or click Back and choose another

destination hard disk.” (The destination hard disk drive pertains to the new hard disk drive that we just added to our

system).http://youcanfixit.org/how-to-clone-a-hard-drive-part-5-of-6-2 (13 of 21)3/23/2012 12:28:51 PM

Page 72: How to Clone a Hard Drive - Http___youcanfixit

How To Clone A Hard Drive Part 5 of 6 | You Can Fix It Before It Happens

Please note, there are two choices above pertaining to deleting partitions:

1. “Delete partitions on the destination hard disk”

2. “No, I do not want to Delete partitions”

When you choose either of the two choices above, there will be a corresponding “Description” below that will explain the

choice you have made.

For this tutorial we will keep the Green radio button that is selected by default, and will “Delete partitions on the

destination hard disk”.

The description below pertains to that first Green Radio Button default choice.

“Delete partitions on the destination hard disk”.

Description:

Deleting all partitions on the destination hard disk will destroy all your data on the destination Hard Disk. Make sure

you have chosen the right destination disk.

This is very important because if you accidentally select one of the other hard drives that have already been installed in

your system by mistake, “You Will Destroy All The Data On That Drive”

In this case when we select the correct drive, there is no data to worry about because the destination disk we are choosing

is the new disk we added to the system. We will want to delete all partitions which is already selected by the green default

radio button above, which says “Delete partitions on the destination hard disk”.

I would like to now direct your attention to the very first two steps of this tutorial which discusses the gathering of all label

information for your new hard drive, (the Destination Drive). One can now see how gathering this information will

help to prevent any confusion when selecting your new destination drive for cloning. You will also notice that your new

drive, if you installed it into a USB enclosure, will say USB in the window list, which will also help to prevent any

confusion with selecting your new drive that you want to clone.

I have made this mistake in the past by choosing the wrong Destination Drive which was disasterous. My intent here is

to pass on these two precautions to you that I discovered in order to help prevent you from making this same, disastrous,

wrong choice when choosing the NEW hard drive to clone.

In the “Hard Disk drives Structure” window above, it says, “You can see your source hard disk layout before

cloing and the destination hard disk layout after cloning”.

This window simply shows a before and after of your (Old) Original Source Drive, and your (New), “Destination

Drive”, (Your New To Be Clone), after the cloning process has completed.

Furthermore, it says “Please review the source hard disk layout before cloning and the destination hard

disk layout that will be created during the cloning procedure”.

In the “Disk Clone Wizard” (Final Operations Window) above, It says “Acronis True Image is ready to perform

operations with physical data. Here is the list of these operations”.

They Are As follows:

Operation 1 of 3

Clearing disk

Hard disk: 8

(Reflects our example disk, which is the New Destination Disk to be Coned)

Operation 2 of 3 (Reboot required)

(A Reboot is required in order to carry out the cloning operations)

Copying partiton

Hard disk: 3 -> 8,

(3 being our old source drive and 8 being our new destination drive

that will be cloned).

Drive letter: C:|

(this is the Old drive cloning to the New Drive

(Which contains C: XP Operating System)

File System: NTFS

(Confirms that we chose NTSF as our File System).

Volume label XP System

(Though, we originally left this blank, the new clone will take on the

Volume label of the Old Source C: Drive.

Operation 3 of 3

Copying MBR

be cancelled if you choose not to reboot now”.

“Press the Reboot Button” in order to continue the cloning process.

Pressing the Reboot Button will reboot your computer and when it reboots the cloning

process will begin.

There will be a progress bar and depending on the speed of your system and the size of your hard drive the clone times will

vary. For my 160 GB drive, on my system the clone time was about 20-40 minutes.

When the cloning process has completed you will get a window that says, Congratulations! “Clone Successfully

completed”.

When your drive has successfully completed cloning it is suggested that you remove your newly cloned drive and replace it

with your original source drive. Now reboot your computer with your newly cloned drive in order to test it out.

After it has proven successful, keep your old source drive as a spare, putting it on the shelf for when that day comes that

your hard drive fails, or keep your newly cloned drive as the spare and continue using your Original Source Drive.

TIP:

Just as a matter of practice, I keep a few clones on the shelf at a time. That’s just me.

I would keep at least one or more depending on your comfort level.

You now have a spare that you can swap out for that bad drive, and you will be up and running in a matter of minutes with

all of your original Operating System, data and application files that you had on your original drive before it failed.

Congratulations you now have successfully learned “How To Clone A Hard Drive” and have taken the time and

initiative to “Fix It Before It Happens”.

How To Clone A Hard Drive Part 6 of 6 | You Can Fix It Before It Happens

Though this tutorial was quite detailed and lengthy, I want to point out that this entire process of actually going through

these tutorial steps to Add and Partition your new hard drive in real time, will take about 30 seconds to a minute from the

time you Add your new drive to a USB enclosure, (if you chose to do that), or from the time you place it into your vacant

drive bay.

After your New Destination Hard drive is partitioned and added to the system, and you reboot to choose the cloning

process, this will take about another 30 seconds once you become familiar with this entire process. Then of course you

have the cloning time, not included in this set up time.

I trust that you have found this tutorial to be a valuable learning tool, that will save you hours if not days of having to re-

install your entire system when your hard drive

finally fails.

If you can see the benefit of cloning your hard drive as a result of this tutorial you may wish to purchase Acronis True

Image Home 2012 here.
