As a service user, relative, carer or friend, you may sometimes need to turn to someone for advice, support and information about mental health.

This is where the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can help.

PALS staff provide advice, information and support, helping you to answer any questions you may have about our services or about any mental health matters.

They can also signpost you to other services which might be helpful to you.

PALS staff act independently when dealing with service users’ and carers’ concerns.

PALS:

• Advises and supports service users, their families and other carers

• Helps sort out problems on behalf of the enquirer by reacting quickly to your

concerns, making sure you know what progress is being made

For example, you may not be able to sort out a problem with a NSFT service on your own. PALS can help you to get your voice heard by the professionals or managers involved so that you can get the answers you need about: why something has gone wrong why particular treatments may not be available or recommended

• Gives information about the NHS and other services

• Listens to suggestions for improving trust services and provides opportunities for you to get involved and make suggestions about how we can improve our services

• Provides information and leaflets on a wide range of topics related to mental health

• Attends events to promote mental health information in the community

PALS staff also put service users in contact with mental health and complaints advocacy services to ensure that you receive appropriate support.

Where necessary we will liaise with Trust staff and if appropriate, other organisations.

Further details can be found on our Trust-wide privacy notice at www.nsft.nhs.uk
