How to get Google Earth imagery into MicroStation as a Rater Attachment

1. Create a new 3D coordinate correct DGN. (use the 3D seed file) 2. Open Google Earth (GE) 3. Locate in GE the area you want to bring into MicroStation 4. Make sure in GE that North is straight up and that the view is not rotated. (TIP: press the letter R) 5. Go back to MicroStation. 6. The following process will be creating a Mesh Surface, so Set the Level, Color, Weight and Line Style to

what you want the Mesh Surface Element to have. 7. Open the View Attributes dialog and change the Display Style to Smooth

8. Open the Geographic toolbox from Tools>Geographic. 9. On the Geographic Tool box, select the Follow Google Earth Views tool

10. Click in the View 1 11. A Mesh Surface is created with a Black and white JPG screen capture of GE draped on the surface. 12. The JPG file is located in current project folder. If you want a color JPG, you will need to go back to GE

and save an image and overwrite the Black and White JPG. 13. Fit the View 14. You will see the Mesh Element 15. Save Settings 16. Create a new 2D DGN. (use the 2D seed file) 17. Attach the 3D DGN as a Reference file using the Coincident World method 18. Fit the view 19. You will see the Mesh Surface appear as a Wireframe. You will need to change the way the Reference

File is displayed.

20. On the Reference File dialog, select the Settings>Presentation as show in the following image.

21. On the Reference Presentation dialog, set the Display Style to Smooth and then click okay

22. Rotate the View by two points choosing the lower left corner and then the lower right corner. 23. Then Attach the JPG file in the project folder using the Attach Rater tool using the Place Interactively

method and choose the lower left corner and then the upper right corner. 24. Now the JPG is a Raster attachment and you can turn off or detach the Reference file.
