How to Get the Message Across

Page 2: How to get the message across

Hello and welcome to our today’s friendly meeting

in which I’d like to share with you some ideas on

speaking at conferences and in the public in general.

Page 3: How to get the message across

Deciding to come here many of you perhaps recalled some unhappy experiences form meetings or conferences where the presenter made you puzzled, uninterested or even sleepy. Moments when after a presentation you thought what the hell was it all about? Or events when the speaker was so nervous and stressed that it made you feel uneasy and unpleasant?

How many of you have attended presentations where the presenter read word for word of his speech from the slide? How many of you have found this entertaining and stimulating? How many of you were able to stretch your thinking and hold your attention during such a speech? How many of you would rather have left the room or had a nap?

Page 4: How to get the message across

Have you had such an experience?

You have?

And if I tell you how you can avoid these difficulties in your public speeches, would you be interested?

Ok then, my name is Lenka Volavkova and I work for Art of English, a new juicy source of information and solid support in a range of difficulties you may have in your use of the English language, including company meetings, poster sessions, and conference presentations.

Art of English decided to help those of you who have to run the risk of standing in front of a big bunch of strangers with large inquisitive eyes looking at you when you are trying to fulfill the great expectations on both sides.

You can choose to participate in a blended course getting study material by mail and then having a personal tutorial.

Or you can bring your presentation or an idea for one, and work on it step by step under the guidance of a specialist, learning at the same time the principles of presentations and presenting.

You can also come with a finished presentation and rehearse in front of a consultant who will give you a professional feedback and help you make your performance even more mature.

And if you are really presses by time, which we understand very well, you can simply send your presentation by mail for a feedback or correction.

As an appetizer, accept please, a part of the introductory unit called The Principles.

Page 9: How to get the message across

We study the principles of public speaking which are the same or similar for any speech in any language. The knowledge of these principles gives us a reliable strut, linchpin, or support in creating and delivering our speeches or posters.

What principles would you see under the words in the following slide?

All of them start with these two letters – Co...

Try to guess before you click.

UNIT ONE: PRINCIPLES

We often refuse to accept an idea merely because the tone of voice

in which it has been expressed is not agreeable to us.

CommunicationCooperationConfidence

Would you ever say that communication is one of the features that are vital for a good presentation? That giving a speech is not isolated monologuing from a detached position near the screen. That it is sharing. Sharing your wonderful piece of cake with others who, only when being allowed to taste it in full, can tell you how sweet it is.

Would you ever say that the last touch in the creation of your presentation is made during your speech in cooperation with the audience who help you make the presentation really exist?

Would you ever think that the first thing to work on if you plan to deliver a speech is to prepare yourself to communicate the data in a reliable and credible way?

Have you ever realized that it may be difficult for people to believe you and what you are saying if you do not believe yourself?

Are there any conditions or toolsthat can help us deliver a really superb presentation?

Before we attempt to answer this question,

it would be quite reasonable to know what a bad presentation is.

What would you say reasons for a bad presentation may be.

Try to answer before you go on.

Stage fright

Page 16: How to get the message across

There are many reasons why we suffer from stage-fright.

Each of us may have his or hers. You would certainly be able to name some. What hinders you when they stand in front of other people?

Just naming them and realizing what they are may help you deal with them on your own. If you want to know more, have a look at the presentation called What? The bleep we fear! And why?, or contact us for help at [email protected].

There is a choice of remedies that can cure this unpleasant condition. In the course and in personal meetings we can together find and apply them to make you happier as presenters and more successful as workers.

Page 17: How to get the message across

Today I want to mention only one of them which I consider highly efficient – rehearsal. Do you know what the word means?

It is something actors do before they have their first night (premiere). They try their roles in a variety of different ways: first they read their parts from the script, then they act them out many times, then they play wearing the costumes having their dress rehearsal. And only after this long and painful period, they can stand in front of a packed house.

A presentation requires the same process. Trying it out many times under various conditions so that we won’t panic in front of our audience and will be ready to handle any situation that may occur.

The next slide wants to answer the question of how long the rehearsal should be. I am sure you know for yourself...but can you guess why the lines in the next slide overlap?

Let me ask you the last question before I close up our today’s short session:

When do you have your last rehearsal of a presentation?

Yes, you are right. It is during your presentation.

Because it is during your presentation that you can learn what to improve in it

and what to avoid in your next performance.

So, it is not necessary to panic or be broken when something gets wrong.

Just realize what happened, see the reasons, and learn from it for next time.

I sincerely wish you good luck with your presentations and look forward to meeting you.
