What Is a Hazardous Material?

Hazardous materials (HazMat) are solids, liquids, or gases that can harm people, (or other living things), property, or the environment. Common hazardous materials include materials that are:

Toxic Flammable Corrosive Reactive Biohazardous

TOXIC

Poisonous or causes long-term illness (such as cancer). Pesticides, paint thinners, many auto products and some cleaners are toxic. Look for words on the product label like:  - "Harmful or fatal if swallowed."  - "Use only in a well-ventilated area" (this means product fumes are toxic).

FLAMMABLE

Burns easily. Paint, thinners and other solvents, and auto products are the most flammable home products. Look for words on the product label like:  - "Do not use near heat or flame."  - "Combustible."  - "Do not smoke while using this product."

CORROSIVE

Eats through materials (acid, for example). Oven cleaners, drain cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners and auto batteries are common corrosive products. Look for words on the product label like:  - "Causes severe burns on contact."  - "Can burn eyes, skin, throat."

REACTIVE

Can spontaneously ignite or create poisonous vapors when mixed with other products (therefore NEVER mix household products), or can explode when exposed to heat, air, water or shock. Household bleach is highly reactive when mixed with Ammonia.

BIOHAZARDS

Biohazards are infectious agents or hazardous biological materials that present a risk or potential risk to the health of humans, animals or the environment. Biohazardous materials include organisms and viruses infectious to humans, animals or plants (e.g. parasites, viruses, bacteria, fungi,).

Lab Safety Guidelines (1)

No person is to work alone in a laboratory

All work is to be done during the scheduled laboratory periods.

Unauthorized experiments are forbidden.

Lab Safety Guidelines (2)

"Horseplay" is strictly forbidden in the laboratory.

Unauthorized

persons are not allowed in the laboratory without teacher’s permission.

Page 12: (How to have fun in the lab without getting hurt) Laboratory Safety

Lab Safety Guidelines (3)

Do not attempt to pick up broken glass with your bare hands.

Work only in well ventilated areas.

Page 13: (How to have fun in the lab without getting hurt) Laboratory Safety

Lab Safety Guidelines (4)

In case of any accident or injury, no matter how minor, notify the instructor at once.

Clean up chemical or biological material spills only under the direct supervision of your laboratory instructor.

Lab Safety Guidelines (5)

Notify the teacher of any medical problems or allergies (to anything to be used in the lab) you have.

Eating, drinking or gum chewing is NOT permitted at any time in the laboratory.

Lab Safety Guidelines (6)

Wear goggles when something can get in your eyes.

Aprons are to be worn to protect your clothing; wear clothing that covers your torso and legs. Sandals and canvas shoes are not permitted. Wear only shoes that shed liquids. NEVER attend lab with bare feet.

Lab Safety Guidelines

Never remove materials from the lab. Keep classroom aisles and walkways clear

to allow for safe exit in case of an emergency.

Chemical waste should never be discarded in classroom trash can. Students should ask teacher where to discard hazardous materials.

Students are responsible for cleaning and putting away all equipment.

Lab Safety Guidelines (4)

When mixing chemicals or heating materials, point the test tube, beaker, or flask away from all people.

Be aware of your neighbors' activities for you may be the victim of their mistakes. If necessary, inform the instructor.
