Blending for reading
What to do when a child gets stuck on a word?
Sound it out. Split the word into parts/syllables.-If the word contains a sound they don’t know, then tell them!-Don’t forget some words can’t be fully sounded out, so help them! (Don’t forget picture clues and meaning).
How we teach reading at St Peter’s
What happens when a word isn’t phonically decodable?
• Encourage them to look for other clues (visual clues, initial sounds/final sounds, grammatical).
• Tell them!
