How To Keep Your Teen Safe On Road…

Factors to consider while purchasing a safe car for your teen

Teenagers are most likely to cause or be the reason for car accidents due to their inexperience,

reckless behavior and inability to follow safety rules. A number of teenagers die every year in

fatal car accidents when they lose control of the vehicle either due to rash driving or lack of

safety features in the car.

It is found that a majority of young drivers do not drive safe vehicles. According to studies, the

cars involved in most of the teenage-caused accidents are either too old or lack essential safety

features. Most of the new drivers get an old family car to drive which increases the risk factor,

hence endangering their lives.

Being a parent it becomes your utmost duty to ensure the safety of the car your child is driving.

It comes down to you to keep the vehicle in good shape by regular maintenance of tyres,

wipers, transmission, oil etc. Besides this, it is important that the vehicle should be very safe in

terms of important security features such as side airbags and electronic stability control.

Factors to consider while purchasing a safe car for your teen

- Low Horsepower - Avoid cars with high horsepower; youths are easily tempted to go beyond

speed limits while undermining safety regulations, and eventually losing control of the vehicle.

- Heavier vehicles - Make sure that the vehicle is slightly large and heavy so as to protect the

driver in case of collision. Mini cars are not considered safe and may cause fatalities in a car

crash.

- Electronic Stability Control - ESC is an essential feature of a secure car. It ensures a smoother

drive on curves and slippery roads.

- Check car ratings – Do check the car’s safety ratings as the Insurance Institute for Highway

Safety provides ratings for many popular cars.

Be a Responsible Adolescent

- No cell phones - Cell phones are the cause for a majority of road accidents. Teenagers are

easily distracted with calls and text messages, thereby losing their focus on the road. Hence, no

calls and no texting while driving.

- Minimize distractions - Say no to drugs and alcohol. Driving under the influence of drugs and

alcohol is no less than a suicide, as they cause you to lose consciousness making you highly

vulnerable behind the wheel.

- Follow traffic rules - Safety rules exist for a reason and teenagers need to adhere to them at all

times. Make sure you wear seatbelt at all times and follow the given speed limits.

- Preventive measures - It always helps to take precautions and be aware of the cars around

while keeping possible escape route in mind. You should maintain some car distance and drive

at slower speed wherever required.

- Fewer passengers - The more number of teenage passengers in a car the more chances of an

accident. Hence it is best for you to drive solo or with minimum passengers for your own safety

and that of others. In some parts of the world, teenagers are restricted from transporting too

many passengers.

Youths can be reckless but adults should leave no stone unturned to discipline them on the

roads. With a little precaution and vigilance so many lives can be saved.
