KG-1 Newsletter Unit 5

Literacy Corner

*Students will be exploring the ele-ments of a story (characters, se-quence of events) and will start to discuss the meaning of a story.

*They will continue to explore letter names and sounds and sight words, and using letter sounds to spell words on their own.

*The class will look at how feelings and ideas are expressed through language. For example classes may investigate poetry, reader’s theater and reading with expressive voices.

Mathematics

Numbers

*combine objects and name how many until 5 (addition until 5)

*separate objects and name how many until 5 (subtraction until 5)

*use the word “total” to describe grouping

*determine how many more one group has than another

Classes will use manipulatives to give students a concrete understanding of addition and subtraction until 5.

Reflective:

Students will reflect on how different forms of Art make them feel and think.

Open-Minded:

Students will be open-minded when they inquire into the ways different cultures and peo-ple express their feelings and ideas.

Attitudes

Students will show their creativity when expressing themselves artistically. They will show cooperation with classmates when taking part in activities throughout the unit.
