HPC Cloud Computing Guide
organizations are facing increasing pressure to deliver critical services to their users while their budgets are either reduced or maintained at current levels. New technologies have the potential to deliver industry-changing information to users who need data in real time, but only if the IT infrastructure is designed and implemented to do so. While computing power continues to decline in cost, the management of large data centers, together with the associated costs of running these data centers, increases. The server administration over the life of the computer asset will consume about 75 percent of the total cost.
Cost to Manage a Small Server FarmNumber of servers = 200
Loaded cost of system admin = $150,000Useful life of server = Five years
Cost to manage a server for Five years = ($150,000/200) * Five years = $3,750
Percent of server cost = ($3,500/$5,000) = 0.75
INTRODUCTION
Scaling an existing data center in many cases is not possible as demands from users increase, and as the real estate
respond to critical needs while costs remain under control and predictable. With more compute power available to organizations than previously possible, business innovation on many fronts is just a click away when working with a cloud computing provider.

Penguin Computing on Demand (POD), Public Cloud Resource
High Performance Computing at Your Fingertips
Penguin’s Public Cloud, POD, Penguin Computing On Demand allows organizations to utilize a high-performance, bare-metal, HPC computing environment in the cloud without having to invest in on-premise infrastructure. Nor do you have to deal with multi-tenant cloud environments and the performance, scalability and security challenges associated with shared infrastructure.
Computational jobs are easy to submit and monitor from either a traditional Linux CLI environment, or through the use of an intuitive and secure web portal. POD’s HPC cluster is ready-to-run with hundreds of applications pre-installed eliminating much of the complexity of building, managing and scaling high-performance computing environments. This

SCYLD CLOUD MANAGER
Fully integrated, HPC cloud solution for administrators and end-users
Guided self-registration Web portal to on-board users onto HPC resources
Web portal interface allows access rights management and system monitoring
Live and historical usage reporting for billing and chargeback management
Web service application programming interfaces (APIs) for reporting, resource management and access control
Ceph storage for redundant, high-performance VM storage
Comprehensive management tool to cloud-enable HPC environments
Managing the administration requirements of a multitude of users and groups in an HPC environment is a complex chal-lenge. Penguin Computing designed Scyld Cloud Manager (SCM) to streamline management processes and bottlenecks. SCM, which can be integrated with an existing HPC cluster or run as a standalone VM cloud environment, is a comprehen-sive solution to manage users, groups, VMs, storage, access control and reporting of an HPC environment. It also provides a brandable web portal front-end for administrators and end users. An Internet-based platform, SCM uses Web service APIsto provide an extensible framework for custom integration into your existing IT infrastructure. What’s more, SCM includes

POD has been deployed and is to supporting funded opportunities campus wide. Already, forty percent of ASU HPC jobs run on POD including WRF, Simulia, MATLAB, R, OpenFOAM, BLAST, Galaxy, and others.
ASU is ready for the next chapter of Data Intensive and OpenStack integration. Jay Etchings, ASU’s Director of Opera-tions for Research Computing and Senior HPC Architect said, “In academia we run a lean ship. Access to HPC experts

Arizona State University was challenged to provide a ubiquitous com-pute environment to bridge the gaps of economic diversity in their university research. The ASU CIO recently stated, “80% of well-known workloads will be in the cloud in 3 years”. Penguin Computing’s POD provides the road map by which this becomes possible. ASU chose POD for many reasons, among them bare metal nodes, processor ho-mogeneity, supported computational applications and ease of access.
